Hobartimus

[edit]

Hiya, if I'm understanding your question, there are two answers: (1) Any administrator can remove edits from history, through what's called a "delete and partial restore" method. However, there are still "deleted edits" which are then visible to any other administrator. Someone with oversight access, however, can even delete things such that they don't show up in the "deleted edits" option. (2) Userpages don't need to have extensive vandalism to be semi-protected. In general, no one's going to be editing the userpage except for that user anyway, so there would never be a need for an anon or new account to have access to the page. In the vast majority of cases, any anon who did edit someone else's userpage, would probably be doing so just to vandalize. Since Hobartium does some vandal patrolling, after I saw his page vandalized, I offered to semi-protect it for him, and he agreed. Hope that helps explain, --Elonka 14:31, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Enforced Wikibreak

[edit]

Hi- generally, that's not something admins want to get involved in. However, I can point you in the direction of the Wikibreak enforcer, a script which will prevent you from logging in for a certain amount of time. Just copy it across to your monobook.js, as explained there, and you're all set. J Milburn (talk) 13:19, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Samuel Karlin's page edits

[edit]

Why did you write, when undoing my contributions to Samuel Karlin's page, that my rewrites were "sneaky, very sneaky?"

"Assume good faith" no "Personal attacks"

Don't agree with those basic tenants?

I'd supplied several book citations complete with ISBNs -- which you deleted.

I'd filled in considerable other information about Sam, each time with supportive links from credible sources -- which you summarily deleted.

A careful read would have shown that I relocated the one or two sentences you restored... while you simultaneously obliterated all the other information I'd added.

But, seriously, your "commentary" that my edits were "sneaky, very sneaky" was very, very unnecessary and absurdly inaccurate.

Thanks for the (cough cough) welcome to wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.202.23.13 (talk) 02:58, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I Exist

[edit]

I am trying to be civil here. I understand that disrupting the entire "Michael Kelso" page is unruly and uncalled for, but at the same time, I AM a human being. I am the REAL Michael Kelso and I deserve to be noticed. As you can see by my editing, I was around long before the boy on "That 70s Show" and besides that I'm real. All that I ask is that I may have a small paragraph or two to let the world know my story. Oh and if it's possible, I would like to place a small edit on the John F. Kennedy article for my mother, Janice Faye Kelso (JFK).

Sincerely, Michael Kelso (Not the character from That 70s Show) --May 16th 2008-- —Preceding unsigned comment added by Superpimpcomputr (talkcontribs) 03:19, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Got a ref for you

[edit]

Re your message: You're welcome to reinsert it with the ref, but it seems to be one of those random top 25 show things than a true award like say an Espy. I think it was originally added here and then changed here to make it sound like IBM awarded it to him unlike, as you said, was just sponsoring the thing. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 06:54, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I blocked him for being a sockpuppet after looking over the contributions. I don't think a checkuser is neccessary as it passed the duck test with a couple of edits. There's an unblock request sitting there right now, but I doubt that is going to get him unblocked. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 07:13, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re. Keep up the great work

[edit]

Gee, thank you for the compliment(s), Roadrunnerz45. :-) I'm glad that my work here is still appreciated by someone, as this year I've been receiving more stones than compliments. :-P I believe that you are right when you say that these are times when users leave the project because they somehow get tired of the project. Wikipedia has become quite gray, one often has to ask themselves why are we here. Maybe this feeling started after Esperanza was terminated. Many users supported its extinction because it didn't produce any benefit to the project. They were wrong, Esperanza was one of the few human things on Wikipedia, it provided a little bit of human warmth to the project. Right after Esperanza was terminated, Wikipedia began to get colder, many users stopped getting to know each other and now, well, now Wikipedia is not half as fun. Eventually someone will fix this. Redirect of Coco Pops

[edit]

I disagree that there was a "consensus" that the main article should be "Coco Pops" with a redirect from "Cocoa Krispies." One person suggested the change and after a week's time had passed and two people (notably people from "Coco Pops" countries) supported it, the change was made.

I am not going to revert the edits I made to the Coco Pops page. (That is a horribly Anglo-centric and shabbily done page with misinformation, e.g., Coco Pops in Mexico? No, it's Choco Krispis. Indeed, the article ignores the entire Spanish and Portuguese speaking population of the globe -- including heavily populated Brazil -- which knows the product only as Choco Krispis.) Rather, I am resurrecting the Cocoa Krispies page as I had edited it without the redirect to Coco Pops until the problems are (amicably, of course) resolved, for, among other things, the reasons set forth on the Coco Pops talk page.Jhw57 (talk) 15:43, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

I think that this Wikipedian is a real genuine supporter on this site. He truly deserves that special honor you bestowed on him.

I have been having a hell of a lot of problems with editors from ??? these past days. I think that there should be elimination of bad editors who just go around the site making troubles for others. I have experianced this especially over the past few days. Enigmaman is the one who watches out for deliquents on here. I am more than happy he got an award.

Thanks for the support and fast solution. My identity is well known over here with English readers. About Japan, okay to live here, but you must know the darn language.Being a foreigner here is just about that. Thank you! Electric Japan (talk) 05:36, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your revert of this article. Also thanks for providing me with some chuckles. You called the edit you reverted, "dubious unsourced content". Actually, it was downright vandalism, the same kind that plagues both this article and Steve Burns. As the main editor of both, I'm come to call it, "Steve Burns vandalism". Thanks for your quick fix!

WP:FAR nomination of Surtsey

[edit]

I have nominated Surtsey because it does not seem to meet the featured articled criteria 1.(c), 2.(c), and 4. It is quite short, and is not of comparable length to current FA's. It is very under-referenced, and some of them aren't in the {{cite web}} form at all, just in <ref> tags. I do not believe that this fits the FA criteria any longer. You are welcome to comment at the review. Dreamafter (talk) 21:20, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was added to Wikipedia:Unsuccessful_adminship_candidacies/F right after it was closed, and the user was notified. Even though it was not accepted, it was transcluded, and as such, still failed. Thunderbirds character images

[edit]

Hi! I think it would be a great idea to include images of each character on their pages. I think one screenshot of each character on their individual pages would be fine, or an image of all the characters in one photo would also be acceptable. To reduce the size of the images I usually use Photoshop or Apple's Preview app (I'm on a Mac). If you want some help resizing images, upload them onto WikiCommons and then I'll shrink them and reupload for you. Howie 14:43, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I decided that, unless I really needed to protect any of my own pages, I would leave it up to other admins rather than do it myself. It just seemed more appropriate to let other administrators handle protections of my pages. Acalamari 15:46, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My assumptions on Indoplug's Tailgating

[edit]

Hello. There is a user on here who loves to target my contributions on Wikipedia. How can one advance on here when you have someone like this fella,User:Indopug. Loves to remove everyhing I do. I can see his only hobby is going around participating in vandalism. A building reputation he has himself focused on at Wikipedia.

I sense he has no knowledge of nostalgia which Cheap Trick (the issue in question) which Cheap Trick is relying on for years. It makes complete sense when there is an article about the topc on hand. I don't even think he has no knowledge about the group. That is an sssumption of mine. A very boring individual who has one offensive pesky task on here, indeed among other's with other more productive interests.

Primitive Indoplug has one indispensible role on here. Bringing trouble and just trailing me. I liked to have some silence on this as soon as possible. Can you do something about it. The end result to this is that you can resolve the issue in hand. How can one be productive on here with ones like him around targeting others. I know he has a history of it on Wikipedia. I've discussed this issue at a few groups/seminars I've attended here in Japan. Wikipedia shouldn't be about bad reactions to contributions. It should be more welcoming. I could say more about this. Perhaps, I will at a later date. Electric Japan (talk) 05:27, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have no time for pranksters

[edit]

Hi. Are you in Japan as well?

I am not dealing with kids anymore. My schedule is not going to be going on here to have a war of words. This is all that the spotlighted user is about.

I will wait a day or more than take it up to administration.I can't match his vandalistic attitude online. If you want productive contributions then I will add to it...which is fact. I can't understand the mentality of those that refer to themselves as a Wikipedia editor. It makes for a great comedic discussion though.

Thanks, Electric Japan (talk) 05:49, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't need it

[edit]

Australia! Great!

You are exactly right. I use to be Wikipedia's biggest fan. This has changed over the weeks. I am through with edit wars. I don't need it. I am not a fighter who wants to mess up things. I only contribute facts.

This is going to be over for me if it keeps up in this direction. This is the only thing he wants. I couldn't possibly imagine having a conversation with this kind of individual. Releasing anger on the net seems to be something that I have no time for to see from others who claim to be editors. I appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

[edit]

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I just woke up. Anyway, the exclamation point is sometimes used because it is supposed to mean "not vote". In some computer programming languages "!=" means "not equal" and the idea of "!vote" was taken from there. Using that terminology is supposed to indicate that it's not really a vote. I used to get the ATIS info online, runways in use, to help decide which spot to go to. My bookmark for that no longer works but Airservices has this link which may be useful. Thanks for your kind words! Actually, I'm far from perfect... As for the article it looks like nonsense to me (but maybe that's just because I know absolutely nothing about WoW). You could use that as a speedy category if you think it fits. Even though I'm an administrator I have no idea what the alphanumeric codes for speedies are. :) I don't really do much of that. I took it from the M7 cycleway. It climbs up to the top of a hill a couple of kilometres away. I happened to stop there and get some water, otherwise I would have missed it. As for the Western Line, I have no idea when we'll get photos. I don't think there are any Wiki editors interested. I don't really have much time to do that now either. Suggestions

[edit]

Your UP would be really cool if you built it around the monster under the bed theme. Like choose monster colors (green slime, black, blood red, etc.), create an image for your heading using a creepy font, add a bed with monster eyes peering out from underneath, and so on. Things like that.

A free graphics program you could use to create your header image is the GIMP.

I hope you like the touch ups I made to your user pages.

Have fun.

That TyrusThomas guy

[edit]

Looks like I missed a lot of action in the past few hours. TyrusThomas4lyf (talk · contribs · logs) had a history of edit warring and personal attacks, mostly on NBA related articles, dating back to early 2007 (starting with another alias). This ultimately got him banned. He's had grudges against a number of editors, and I'm certainly one of them, as I can identify him fairly readily through his signature edits, I've reported him in the past, and I endorsed and contributed to the RFC summary Wikipedia:Requests for comment/TyrusThomas4lyf. This time around, he's probably ranting about me since I did tag his user page with a sock-puppet notice (maybe I should have placed it on his talk page instead, as Chensiyuan did) and reverted some of his changes. If you're interested in additional history per this user, you can view a quick summary at Wikipedia:Long_term_abuse#TyrusThomas4lyf. — Myasuda (talk) 16:48, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

24th August 2008

[edit]

The subject of such an article is, well, 24th August 2008. We just don't keep them as separate pages but as sections, e.g. August_2008#2008_August_24. I was about to decline the speedy, so i just created a redirect for the benefit of the newbie. --Tikiwont (talk) 11:44, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well another admin followed your suggestion. Let me just clarify that technically there is for each day a separate subpage of the current events portal, e.g. Portal:Current events/2008 August 24; they are just transcluded as sections into mainspace.--Tikiwont (talk) 14:27, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Google

[edit]

That's because Wikipedia is mirrored in a number of places, so some hits can be generated just from these. If you will forgive the truism, that AfD is from when I was a relatively inexperienced editor, and a Google search is not necessarily a very good way of determining notability. Motto of the day

[edit]

Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:52, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Journalist, just want to say thanks for all your hard work on the wikipedia and may you keep it up for a long time to come. Its always good to greet and meet long term wikipedians and this is the first time i came across your page so i just wanted to say hi. I know that being the age you are, real life must be extremely busy and you must have a lot going on, what was it just 2 weeks give or take you had the big 2-1? Hope you had a great day! Your username, are you studying to be a journalist in real life? Hope you are doing well and get good grades, i can only imagine how busy you will get approaching your final subjects. Regardless, good luck and all the best Monster Under Your Bed (talk) 06:51, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Thank you for the very friendly comment on my talk page. It's great to be appreciated. I think I've come across your page before, but I can't remember the circumstances. Hopefully, they were good. Yes, I just celebrated my birthday. An exciting time for me; I finally feel adult. But it also means I'm growing old, so I can't do the childish things I love to do.
Yes, I'm extremely busy, especially now because school has started once again. The summer flew by so fast. No, I'm not studying to be a Journalist, but it's something that has interested me for a long while. I'm actually a Sociology major, with minors in English and History (with a little Political Science on the side). Many people frown at me choosing Sociology, but it is, in my opinion, one of the most important subjects that one can study. I've always been interested in human interaction, and my main areas of focus is inequality (socialization and gender inequality; economic inequality/class structures and how it interplays with racial background/racial inequality; crime and deviance, and the evolution of human sexual interaction/sexuality). Very interesting.
Thanks for your kind wishes. I'll try my best in school. I see you're interested in maps. Geography was one of my favorite courses in high school, but I had to abandon it, because I couldn't do everything. Keep up the good work also on Wikipedia. We need more friendly, hardworking editors like you. Orane (talk) 04:21, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
PS: On second thought, I guess I could actually be a journalist with the things that I study. I was reading the article on the subject what said that sociology is important in market research and data collection, and media relations in terms of target audience, and finding the right balance of programs that relate to certain viewers/readers etc. Orane (talk) 04:30, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

In all probability, the CVU has seen even darker days than that, but it was pretty dark nonetheless. That was another day when Twinkle broke down completely, and unlike this time, vandalism was hot and heavy all the way through. RfA Review

[edit]

Thanks for the continued interest in the RfA Review. This time around, we only received one anonymous entry; I posted the responses from that entry at Wikipedia:RfA Review/Recommend/Anonymous Response 1. Right now, I'm starting the process of baselining some common responses from the first 50 or so questionnaires. Once that's done, we split the rest of the responses into groups of five, and editors can read through and sort the recommendations. Once we have tallys done in this way, we can look and see which recommendations had widespread support, or which were detailed enough for further review. The idea here is that, if enough editors said the same thing independently, the idea probably has merit. I'll post more information at WT:RREV when it becomes available - in the meantime, thanks for your continued interest in the project! Having some problems with searching the archives

[edit]

Hi, i saw on the AN/ANI search archive page you are the one to contact with any problems, just having some in regard to finding a certain phrase that doesn't show up. If you have a look at incident archive 485 here you will see "Osama bin Laden". Yet when i search for this here it doesn't show up. Nor does the heading here. Why is this so? What i am doing wrong? Thanks Monster Under Your Bed (talk) 02:43, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The tool has been rendered obsolete due to a change in the mediawiki search software. For example you can now run this search:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&search=nixeagle+prefix%3AWikipedia%3AAdministrators%27+noticeboard&ns0=1&ns4=1&ns8=1&ns10=1&ns12=1&ns14=1&fulltext=Search
Basically you include the word or words you are looking for, and following it add prefix:Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard and it will search all archives for you automatically. —— nixeagle 03:18, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

I did this because the long dash is used. The long dash (–) and the short dash (-) appear the same when editing a page. Since some people may think it is the same, they press the dash button that shows the short dash. The "ndash" will surely show a long dash. For example, the Template:2008–09 Portland Trail Blazers season game log has different kinds of dashes. --Arnold Go (talk) 02:49, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I made the change you requested in your latest message. Enjoy. Superm401 - Talk 09:07, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I really appreciate it. Superm401 - Talk 09:28, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I chose to revert the anon's edit as I wouldn't class it as a minor change. I've only just replied now as I just got home from work when I reverted the edit but had to go to a Wagga Wagga City Council meeting so I apologize for the delay. Bidgee (talk) 10:31, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Christmas greetings

[edit]

Thanks for your message, and I also wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year. You were lucky to have a mild summer last year ... in Perth, Christmas was 41 degrees and Boxing Day was 44 degrees! Then we had the hottest summer in 30 years. Hopefully it will be a bit nicer this year. Never mind me ... I love weather facts. :-)

Yes it's amazing how quickly time flies ... the start of the year feels like yesterday to me. Graham87 07:25, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Might be a good idea...

Yeah, I did actually see that coming, but you never know. Thanks for the heads up. --fvw* 11:35, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for everything

[edit]

Wow - thanks for your message, it's nice to be appreciated. It was great to meet you also, and I was happy to help you become a more productive editor. I hope whatever has caused you to reduce your editing is a positive thing, not something horrible. We all need a balance in life ... I have probably been editing too much in the last couple of years so other areas of my life have suffered. Best of luck for you in the future, and I hope you can at least pop by every now and then. Orphaned non-free media (File:Elle Robinson.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Elle Robinson.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:28, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hope to see you back!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
