You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our Wikipedia Day 2023 at Jefferson Market Library in Greenwich Village, a Wikipedia and Public Domain Day celebration and mini-conference as part of birthday festivities marking the project's founding in 2001. In addition to the party, the event features presentations by Jason Scott of the Internet Archive and Anne Hunnell Chen of the International (Digital) Dura-Europos Archive, panels, and, of course, lightning talks. Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues!

And there will be WIKICAKE.

1 - 5PM at Jefferson Market Library, 425 Sixth Avenue in Manhattan
After 5PM, migration to afterparty at Ace Hotel, 20 West 29th St
Livestreaming is likely, watch the wiki meetup page

All attendees are subject to Wikimedia NYC's Code of Conduct. In addition, to participate in person you should be vaccinated and also be sure to respect others' personal space, and we may limit overall attendance size if appropriate. New York Public Library encourages the wearing of masks when indoors, and especially be mindful of those in your proximity.

P.S. Next regular event February 15 will be Feb WikiWednesday.

I appreciate a bad pun as much as a good goat; all are welcome ;) Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 00:41, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

I am sorry for writing a "hoax"

I did not mean to write a hoax as the GRO is completely real. But maybe just not suitable enough for wiki. It is no hoax but simply just a lesser known corp, do you accept this query? I will not write any bad articles again. Tooting! carrot 123dicey (talk) 01:42, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

@Tooting! carrot 123dicey: I can't find any evidence that this organization is real and the sources in the deleted article also didn't have anything. A real government organization should at least have an easy-to-find .gov site, which doesn't appear to be the case for this organization. If the GRO actually does exist, any potential article would need to have citations to reliable sources not affiliated with the organization. This forms part of the general notability guideline for any topic to be included on Wikipedia, so I should also note that many lesser-known organizations do not, and should not, have Wikipedia articles. No need to delete

Please do not delete the unused data like this, unless it is disruptive. Being able to take a second look is part of the process. -DePiep (talk) 16:43, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

@DePiep: I had already checked and updated the data in the isoboxes. In some cases, when references were involved, keeping both datasets led to cite errors; I removed the old (deprecated) data to ensure such errors would not propagate to article space. Nevertheless, if you believe this is unnecessary (I'm guessing you mean take a a second look after all the data is updated?) and there are no error messages, I will stop doing it. Complex/Rational 16:47, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
Yes the red reference errors are a good reason to simply remove them. But regular data can stay, no harm. Cleanup afterwards needed anyway. Also gives me a tech finger on the pulse (unexpectad situations to learn from). Thanx. DePiep (talk) 16:54, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
And on second thought: it is even preferable to delete the old refs right after the checking, because they should not break future correct edits to any article references. ;-) DePiep (talk) 12:50, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
Alright, will do this moving forward. Then we have the best of both worlds. Complex/Rational 14:56, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

AfC backlog drive

Hi ComplexRational, there's still a couple days left to get in some reviews! :) S0091 (talk) 18:55, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

Dear ComplexRational,

Thank you for your interest in this article. I should have mentioned outright that it was indeed a translation from Dutch Wikipedia. You commented at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nijenhuis_(Diepenheim)&action=history: "remove sections flagged as copyvio on nl.wp (from http://www.markveldseveld.nl/kastelen.html), however". But that section does not appear to be flagged as copyvio, compare https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nijenhuis_(Diepenheim)#Gebouw (gebouw=building).

  • So we can restore a translation of that Dutch wikipedia section?

Thanks and cheers, Hansmuller (talk) 11:11, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

@Hansmuller: It's not flagged here on en.wp (and never was), but [1] indicates a possible copyvio, and the source material is labeled as "Copyright. All rights reserved." Unless I misunderstood this, restoring the deleted section would be inappropriate, but feel free to add a paraphrased translation of your own. Complex/Rational 14:32, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for participating in Articles for Creation's January 2023 Backlog Drive! — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 00:28, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
@Ingenuity: Thanks! Sorry I couldn't get more reviews in. Complex/Rational 03:35, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Just wanted to throw a thank you for approving this article and deleting the redirect the other day, but also to let you know that you forgot to move the article to mainspace. Don't worry, I've already done it myself, just figured you oughtta know. This, of course, is assuming that you were the one who approved it and not just who answered a CSD request on the redirect, and that it was someone else who didn't follow through, in which case just ignore this part! QuietHere (talk) 01:11, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

@QuietHere: Thanks for the message. I was actually just responding to the CSD request, as I believe the person approving the article at AfC should be the one moving it to mainspace. But it would probably be a good habit to ping the reviewer in the deletion summary. Cheers, Complex/Rational 03:41, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

A 2022 review, including prospects for future transactinides

Not sure if I've previously sent you this. It refers to this 2016 conference paper that concludes These calculated results and considerations suggest that it is unlikely that elements much above Z = 120 or isotopes much beyond N = 184 will be observed. Seems like the general attitude has changed from "119 and 120 are coming" (Zagrebaev 2013) to something more like (if I may paraphrase): "119 and 120 will need a paradigm shift from what has come before, will be hard to characterise, and even once that's done, 121++ will still be really hard". Double sharp (talk) 19:58, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

Double sharp I don't think I've seen this one before. Looks like a pretty comprehensive review, but there are oh so many questions... For one, I wonder where the "fission drip line" might lie among SHEs or in the path of r-process nucleosynthesis. Complex/Rational 01:42, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

@Nikita sh12: The page read as a detailed product description of CloudPanel, which is the kind of content suggesting that a user should install and use the product. Wikipedia is not an advertising service or how-to guide; a Wikipedia article (or draft thereof) should describe its subject in a neutral tone, with the sole purpose of informing the reader. As such, a new draft would need to be fundamentally rewritten to address these concerns. Complex/Rational 16:21, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

Bbb23 (the redirect)

[2] I was aware such a redirect would be potentially problematic, but I didn't know it would be vandalized SO soon. Had I known about it in advance I wouldn't have created it in the first place. Sorry! Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 23:01, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

@Dsuke1998AEOS: No need to apologize. Conversely, I apologize if you took offense from my protection summary – your creation was absolutely not in bad faith, but rather the influx of successive IP edits were.
Unfortunately, certain pages/titles tend to be vandal-magnets, especially since the only barrier here was needing autoconfirmed permission to create the page. See also the logs for Materialscientist and Widr (again, the page titles in mainspace, not the users) for similar happenings.
Regarding the intended function of this redirect, I think BBB 23 does a better job because it matches the target's case and spacing; we don't default to creating redirects for all variants on capitalization and spacing, and given the bad faith edits in this case, in my opinion the lowercase title has the potential to do more harm than good – at least, until someone/something else widely known exactly as "bbb23" comes into existence. I have no prejudice if another admin approves the creation of a redirect, though in that case, I would strongly recommend at least extended-confirmed protection. Complex/Rational 03:32, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
I see that HJ Mitchell has recreated this title, with full protection. So vandalism is no longer a concern (unless an admin goes rogue and starts creating articles on non-notable admins :)). Dsuke1998AEOS (talk) 03:59, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
It seems vaguely plausible to me for someone typing quickly, especially on a phone keyboard. But ECP feels a bit too much like an invitation to create sleeper socks. Hopefully full protection removes the temptation. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:30, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
Those are very fair points. Indeed, hopefully, full protection will do the job. Complex/Rational 13:15, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Unoctoctium

Hello ComplexRational, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Unoctoctium, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: G4: A 4-year-old mass RFD with a weak delete result, with several of the nominated redirects having been recreated in the years since, doesn't seem to impose a long-standing consensus against future creation. These should be discussed again. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 12:45, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

The criterion was technically applicable, but I understand why it was declined and was on the fence myself (which is why I didn't flat-out delete). It's definitely worth another discussion. Complex/Rational 16:41, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

My Wikipedia has been deleted

Dear ComplexRational,

I recently noticed that my Wikipedia page has been deleted, and I wanted to reach out to inquire about the reason for the deletion. I put a lot of time and effort into creating and maintaining the page, and I believe it provided valuable information to readers.

If there were any issues with the content or formatting of the page, I would be happy to work with you to address them and ensure that the page meets Wikipedia's standards. I am also open to any suggestions or feedback you may have on how to improve the page or make it more suitable for Wikipedia.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Best regards Dhoogenkamp (talk) 10:07, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

Dhoogenkamp, your page was deleted because it was written like a curriculum vitae that contained excessive autobiographical content unrelated to work on Wikipedia, with a strong promotional tone that would also make it unsuitable as an encyclopedia article.
Your user page should primarily describe your work on Wikipedia, with a little bit of autobiographical content; see the guidelines on acceptable usage of user pages for more detailed information. Wikipedia is not a blog, personal webpage, or web host.
If your intent was to create an article, please keep in mind that writing autobiographies is strongly discouraged, as it is somewhat harder to maintain a neutral point of view. Nonetheless, the correct way forward is to create an page in draft space (title with a Draft: prefix) with an encyclopedic tone, citations to multiple independent reliable sources (this determines whether an article subject is notable enough for a standalone article), and submit it via articles for creation so that an uninvolved editor can assess whether the article would be suitable for mainspace.

IP account using a logged-in account?

First off, I would like to thank you for helping to revert vandalism on Port Hope Simpson. I assume User:Sophiebridle and User:209.128.11.201 are the same person because they're making the same edits on the page. Do you think I should report this to WP:ANI or WP:SPI? Thanks for your time, Dinoz1 (chat?) 14:26, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Dinoz1: Creating an account between two edits isn't explicitly disallowed, even if the edits are vandalism. I say if they keep doing it, report the account at WP:AIV, and I'm pretty sure the IP will be autoblocked in some way. LilianaUwU (talk / contributions) 14:29, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks! Dinoz1 (chat?) 14:29, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
@Dinoz1: Yep, what LilianaUwU said. Now that the IP has been blocked, the account would out itself as a WP:DUCK if it disruptively edits the same page in the same manner (provided they haven't already been autoblocked). I also would say it's not worth going through the motions of SPI unless there's good reason to suspect sleepers or long-term abuse – which, in this case, I don't see at first glance. Complex/Rational 14:47, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

G6 decline

Hey! I saw you declined my G6. I saw that it was from 16 years ago and didn't really see any new sources indicating notability. But I understand the decline and now realize that I confused it with G4. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 15:30, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

@Blaze Wolf: I had a feeling that was the case; no worries. My main reason for not simply invoking G4 is that some post-2007 claims are present in the article, and I haven't looked for any foreign-language sources that might illustrate notability, so I believe this is best addressed via a new AfD. Saw that A10 declined. Would G4 apply for this even if it was draftified and not completely deleted? Nothing has changed since the previous discussion WikiVirusC(talk) 00:06, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

@WikiVirusC: The criterion does not explicitly say one way or the other. My understanding is that since the decision to draftify was the result of the deletion discussion, G4 would indeed be applicable to the identical page recreated in article space (as it could be seen as trying to circumvent the deletion policy) but not to the draft itself (where the goal is incubation). Thanks for bringing this AfD to my attention; I have deleted the page. Complex/Rational 01:08, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

As far as user conduct goes, there's nothing urgently requiring action here.
For the article on fa.wiki that you linked, deletions there have no bearings for the corresponding article here. I don't believe any of the criteria for speedy deletion are applicable, so if you believe the English article should be deleted, please open a discussion at articles for deletion and follow the instructions here to complete the process. Complex/Rational 13:39, 12 June 2023 (UTC)

Once again, deletions on the Persian Wikipedia are basically irrelevant here, because policies and guidelines are not necessarily the same across different wikis. On the note of policy, there is nothing expressly forbidding the use of foreign-language sources, though English-language sources are preferred whenever they are available.
You may write a deletion rationale and post it to Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion to have someone else create the discussion page for you.
If you believe there is a more sophisticated issue here involving user conduct, please first attempt to discuss it with the user. I also don't clearly see the evidence behind your claims – if there is, it's certainly not obvious enough to justify any immediate action. And moreover, I have no subject-matter knowledge and have no recollection of related interactions within this area (or indeed with you specifically), so I urge you to instead raise this matter at this user's talk page or at a noticeboard/deletion discussion. New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

Hello ComplexRational,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.
