Help with translations

[edit]

I'm currently working on a script intended to create short articles on political parties on a variety of wikipedias simultaneously. However, in order for the technique to work I need help with translations to various languages. If you know any of the languages listed at User:Soman/Lang-Help , then please help by filling in the blanks. For example I need help with several Indian languages, including Bangla. Thanks, --Soman 12:52, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bangla wikipedia

[edit]

Dwaipayan, I know you are busy with the FACs and other things. But if possible, take a look at Bangla-wiki ... we have reached 3560 articles as of now, with বাংলাদেশ becoming the first full length article, and many others on the queue. You've been missing there since April/May, and it would be great if you comeback there when you have time. :) --Ragib 16:52, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Darjeeling

[edit]

Hey there! I had a look at it a bit ago, and thought I'd pass along some ideas here to you.

  • Book references to specific passages should include page numbers – for example, ^ (Kennedy 1996)
  • I'm concerned about the comment on FAC about no earlier history?
  • On quick glance, I see some prose problems (a bit more copyediting needed - just some samples from one paragraph):
    • Colonial architecture characterizes most buildings in Darjeeling, with mock Tudor residences, Gothic churches, the Raj Bhawan (Governor House), Planters' Club and the various educational institutions. (I actually am not sure what this sentence says?)
    • There are small monasteries which showcase the Buddhist pagoda style architectures. (Not sure - is architectures ever plural?)
    • Reduancies: Darjeeling is traditionally regarded as a centre of music and a niche for musicians and music admirers. Singing and playing different musical instruments is common and popular to most of the resident population, who take pride in the traditions and role of music in cultural life.
    • Western music is also popular especially among the younger generation(comma) and Darjeeling is a major centre of Nepali rock music.
  • Another paragraph:
    • As Per the 2001 census, the Darjeeling urban agglomeration (which includes Pattabong Tea Garden), with an area of 12.77 km²(comma) has a population of 109,163, while the municipal area has a population of 107,530.[20]
  • Till early nineteenth century, Till ??

Give it another once over before Tony gets there :-) Sandy 19:52, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I read your note, and will check in on it in a few days. Tony is a far better writer/copy editor than I am, so I can only give some suggestions, which I hope help! Sandy 14:55, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But grammatically correct is functional. And it's a matter of elminating redundancy as much as getting the grammar right. This is at issue in all languages, not just English, so acquiring the skill of tight writing will cross over.

I can't work on every FA that I review. There are good Indian copy-editors on WP. Please locate them, flatter them, beg. See the FA logs and the history pages of other India-related articles to identify the right people. Tony 12:26, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dwaipayan. I started with a minor copyedit of the lead, but have paused due to some work. I'll start copyediting soon. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 12:38, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dwaipayan - don't worry about the FAC - Sundar and I will fix Tony's points in the next 24 hours. 2 of the object votes are unfounded anyway. Rama's arrow 12:39, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In accordance with Tony1's comments, I'll be starting a massive copyedit now. Para-2-para, line-2-line, so please make sure that you check this article within the next 12 hours or something. I'll also fix Jeronimo's objection. Rama's arrow 11:52, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Sukumar.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Sukumar.gif. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jkelly 22:06, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Being Busy

[edit]

Hi,

Saw your comments on my page. Although I am back in KGP, resuming full activity would take another two days, and would get fully active only after Thursday night. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 13:54, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

First; I like what you are doing in the Darjeeling category. I was led to the St Joseph's College, Darjeeling article and have one suggestion (if my guesses are correct). The Principal is a Father with the Jesuits, correct? I would have made it read more clearly if I was sure. Thanks! Stormbay 18:47, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the information about the principal to how I think it should be written, Someone will correct it if I am wrong. You also should add a section to identify your source(s). Good Editing! Stormbay

August Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.
Signed...
Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Varanasi

[edit]

I would very much like to have more editors editing the Varanasi article, and make it a featured article. Please consider me willing by all means.--Anupamsr 18:59, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your response. I also have been searching the net with not much success. For example, Mark Twain's quote about varanasi is not reported to any credible site, but only quoted on a number of pages. It may well be urban legend :)
Btw, there are some links that I found out. I will shared them with you. Currenly I am working on the Culture and Temples part. The Art part is really very small as in not cited well. It has a vast potential. As of now, I am no where near Varanasi, so I cannot help with the civic administration. None the less, I will be going to Varanasi in coming september, where I plan to collect a lot of material which is hard to find on internet and images too, especially the link to the famous gali where most of the musicians live etc. Tourism can be absorbed, I actually forked many sentences to form it from the article itself. Terrorism should be a heading, if not a different article because it is based on Current News IMHO. I agree that Geography and Climate should not be of much problem, and they can be dealt later.
Also, Vanarasi has lots of problems, pollution and ineffective administration are major part of it. I will inquire them when I go to Varanasi. For culture, temples etc., here are my bookmarked links:[2][3][4][5]
Varanasi.nic.in is as you said. [6] also seems to be a informative site but it may cause NPOV problems. For now, let us make the Civic Administration title our focus since it is mostly empty.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Anupamsr (talkcontribs)
Ok, I will continue with the Pople and History thing. Meanwhile I will keep a keen eye on Economy and Civic administration for... otherwise we will just wait and see :) cheers :)-- -Anupam.sr|UTC   12:08, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking the initiative on so many Bengal and Bengali related articles and entries. Let me know if I can help in anyways possible. My areas of interest are literature, films, and music. Have a nice day! Ani. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Antorjal (talkcontribs)

That was what I thought too (Re : lists and "sub"-pages). In my first bout of working on this page, I focused on things like obvious grammar, syntax, factual issues with existing content, as well as copy-edit of material that showed up unchanged from other websites. I'll do some significant revising and bother you again when i think it's worthwhile. Thanks for the advice and patience, Sdsouza 11:46, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Kochi

[edit]

Thanks for the review. I've adjusted the article as you suggested. Could you check if it is okay now? Anything else you'd like changed? I, nor Tintin, nor an encyclopedia I consulted mention anything important enough to be marked in history happening since the 1960s. The only (possible) thing I could think of, is the Coonan Cross Oath. But I'm uncertain how important that was as far as the city is concerned. It was important as far as Christianity is considered, as it lead to a lot of unfortunate events (Christian community was split) and an incomparable cultural loss (Indian christian traditions were forcefully rewritten to bring under papal authority). -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK11:18, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kochi isnt actually a million plus city. Only the urban agglomeration of Kochi has a population > 1m. There werent any upheavals or major movements to protest the name change either. Btw, I've shamelessly ripped off two sentences from Kolkata. I hope you dont mind. :P The history section is getting kinda long, dont you think....?-- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK06:06, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
