Hi. I was reading comments about the Puerto Rico bio stub which I created. I did not know that the creation of stub templates had to go through a process. I am sorry if it was a mistake in my part. I tried to follow the format and style used for other bio stubs. I created the stub because of the increasing number of short articles relating to Puerto Rican people. Stub template issues

Hi Gutness. A few editors are having a bit of a conflict at the moment about links to wikiprojects from stub tags. As you seem to be the stub guru on wikipedia I thought I would ask for your input. Geo Stub emblems

I stand corrected.

The reason I had for changing them was 1.) They were so small you copuldn't tell what they were, and 2.) they are the arms of the County councils not the counties - counties don't have coats of arms under English heraldic law see List of English counties' coats of arms#Use_of_the_arms.

They can also be anchronistic: - Using the arms of the post 1974 Cambridgeshire for the ancient county is a case in point. Lozleader 17:11, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi. As the person who was responsible for a bunch of images on stub types, I note that I didn't make much effort in selecting the ones I did, and I certainly don't remember there being any discussion about the images! For the counties that did have non-arms emblems available, they were used (Cornwall/Lancashire/Devon/Yorkshire), we just added a few more such ones. Morwen - Talk 19:23, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Not being an admin and being a newbie wiki, I may have started the trouble with my comment at [[1]] "It would be correct [heraldic practice] to take them [the arms of the county councils] off - though they do look pretty! I notice some geostubs have other emblems - the Yorkshire ones have white roses for instance. It would a nice project to devise a little logo for each one. I was thinking of taking the Licoln City arms off the Lincolnshire stub and substituting the flag. Things like that."

The emblems as are are the local authorities arms mostly taken from [2] (with permission) and [3] or perhaps from [4] - I'm not happy about the latter site as they have taken some images I have drawn and simply "traced" them, thus denying copyright breach.

Taking full achievements of arms and squashing them down to small images makes for a little blurry picture. The essence of heraldic design is that a coat of arms should be easily disttinguishable. If one was going to use a coat of arms at that scale, one would strip it down to the shield, losing the crest (the bit on the top) and supporters (the figures at the side). The resulting image would be recognisable. I simply took this a step further of using a single element for clarity's sake - and so as not to infringe the copyright of the local authority involved.

Maybe you'e right - but WP:WSS would be a better place than my talk page :). Ideally, flags would be better, but most counties either don't have them or have what we vexillologists call "LOB flags" - i.e., nothing more than a logo on a plain background. Lincolnshire's flag is brand new, and it's probably too early to tell whether it will take off with the public. As far as these particular stubs are concerned, the icons aren't overly controversial (although Template talk:London-geo-stub might be informativeactually, no it isn't) - there are bigger problems with national geo-stubs (there's been a bit of an edit-war on israel-geo-stub lately, for instance). A big problem though is that changing heavily-used templates causes problems for the servers, which are always under enough strain anyway, so bulk changing a dozen or so template is not a good thing. That's one of the mainr easons for discouraging people from changing icons too often. The aim was to try to make the icons look fairly uniform and non confusing - unfortunately several counties have very similar traditional emblems, so using the official council arms made more sense. As you say, though, several of them got so small as to be indistinguishabele anyway. Grutness...wha? 00:26, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

  • Since this is a thorny one, it'll probably continue to be debated for a while so as to get some sort of consensus. unlike the other deletion processes which are largely "keep or delete" wuth SFD we like to hammer out some sort of middle ground if there's strong arguments on both sides. In this case, I think that if the main Category:New York state highways is taken to cfd for renaming (which has been suggested) whatever happens there would sway the argument one way or the other. Grutness...wha?

Georgia Ports Authority stub classification

I see that you changed the stub type to 'US government'. Georgia Ports Authority isn't a US government agency; it's a state agency responsible for state ports. Is there any other stub that would make sense? --BWD ^(talk) 13:46, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

I think that stub type is intended to cover all aspects of government in the US, not necessarily the federal goverment specifically. Though the category page could make that a lot clearer, the link's been redirected off to strange places. Doubtless the state-level stuff will in due course be split out... • The thing is that AFD is often said to be a wellspring of negativity. Indeed, the AFD template invites people to argue about it; while the PROD template invites people to improve the article. If you look at the speedy deletion page, you'll note a number of headers (General, Articles, Redirects etc.) - take the first letter from the header, and append the number attached to the appropriate bullet list item below it, giving you a code like G6 (history merging). 9/11 Coincidences

Coincidences surrounding 9/11 have been widely noted and by virtue of that fact they have had a presence and an impact in the culture at large.

"Widely noted" in this case means a cultural phenomenon is occurring and to that extent is an "object" in the world and hence worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia that purports to cover objects in the world.

I do not wish to violate Wikipedia's sensible policies. Can you recommend how I might revise the article on 9/11 coincidences so that it is an acceptable and serviceable stub?

help to remove messy work

I placed prod notices on two clearly empty articles. I authored those articles thinking they were temporary as part of a move of an article about me to a new user page that i will migrate to. a bit complex but essentially the articles have no objectors, and have only the edits by myself and one other, a redirect that i deleted, to speed up the process. they are Paul C C Moss and Paul x Moss. Can these articles be deleted immediately or do they have to wait the 5 day period?

There is a Paul J Moss up for vfd and in process, that will be over soon i guess it depends on how long the admins take to decide, hopefully it can be determined quickly as well. Its self authored (by me) so it is likely to be deleted. cheers moza 15:11, 28 February 2006 (UTC) the real paul moss

Polynesian Mythology stubs

Remember Nganga and Toniwha? Well it seems that there are lots of these Polynesian mythology stubs, and most of them are utter rubbish or distortions at best. I have asked TUF-KAT (who seems to have started these in 2002) about his sources. Any chance we could do a delete on any that have not been expanded by others since TUF-KAT? Your Bermuda map

I just tried to start a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Maps#Quality. I uploaded some maps of the parishes of Bermuda many moons ago, but never got around to adding them to articles. Yesterday I did, and noticed that you had already made some and put them there. Clearly better than mine, so I didn't replace them, but I have a question: If my maps had already been there, would you have still made yours? I'm hoping that by putting lots of my "starter maps" all over Wikipedia, that I'm not discouraging more skilled people from replacing them. Re: Edit conflicts

Hello! Sorry about the edit conflicts. They happen to me occasionally too. There was no flag on the page to say that it was being worked on for x time, so I decided to add a stub and category as it was clear to me that they were lacking. Maintenance#Articles_undergoing_major_edits is the place to find the templates, in case you weren't already aware. I hope that you were able to rescue your typing and put it in after I had finished. Humour on Wikipedia files

lol!! good to see humour is alive and well in at least one wikipedian.. i'm am intrigued at your non-article and laughed a bit at the surrounding stuff.. so on ya mate and if you look you will see i have had a bit of fun myself, but apparently bent the rules a bit far, starting way back in my early days, like 3 or 4 months ago.. whatever at least i'm real and can handle the truth. by the way, I have a heirarchy of geographic boundaries for new zealand, and the proxy for suburb/locality is called an 'area unit' its quite useful for what i do, but to be honest i use meshblocks mostly, and addresses, (with names) permission granted of course. I am licenced to LINZ / Stats and can possibly assist with queries about nz geo stuff, if you get stuck. meshblocks, area units, territorial authority and regional boundaries in fact are all perfectly nested, with accurately known boundary locations. there will be a new set released late this year to co-incide with the census data release, something i use lots. its all about people and where they live, and its a very good tool to predict peoples behaviour.
