Wikipedia Assignments for "The Ancient Maya" at KU (Spring 2012)

Your assignment (due March 5, 2012) is to make a meaningful contribution of at least 1000 words (and code that includes relevant hyperlinks) to Wikipedia in the form of either a new entry or the editing of an existing entry relevant to scholarship on Maya civilization. Your entry and/or editing should be in the style of current Wikipedia content, including relevant headings and subheadings, hyperlinks, and (especially) references. It will be graded on the basis of overall appearance as well as the value of its content and the degree to which it contributes to the value of the resource. Please note that you are NOT required to include digital images, although you are encouraged to do so if you are comfortable with the necessary permissions and procedures. The value of your contribution will depend not only on the information content you provide, but how well it is integrated into Wikipedia via hyperlinked text. Please note that it is good procedure to make minor edits to other existing entries so that they link back to your own entry when it ultimately goes "live".

Please use this space for asking any questions you might have about the assignment. I'll answer if I can, but there may also be some answers from others. Please remember to sign your posts! Hoopes (talk) 22:39, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

To develop your article for this assignment, please set up a dedicated user subpage for it and save the link on your main userpage. You would do this by creating a name consisting of a backslash followed by the proposed article title (or "Draft" or any text). It should be coded like this: [[/Article title]]. Click on that link to create the new subpage, which will be created at User:Student username/Article title. You can then add some text, save it, and then continue.

For convenience, you can transclude your working draft subpage onto your main userpage so it's visible from there by adding {{User:Student username/Article title}} to the main userpage somewhere.

Start out with using the particular referencing system wikipedia calls WP:CITESHORT. You can then build a separate bibliography of sources towards the end of the article (in a separate section called either "References" or "Bibliography". Within the body of the text itself, you can then cite individual statements with shortened cites that correspond to some entry in the bibliography. This is easily done by adding cites in the form of <ref>Smith 2008, p.123</ref> after the statement to be cited.

Basic Wikipedia Principles

Neutral point of view, verifiability, and no original research are Wikipedia's three core content policies. Together, these determine what type and quality of material will be acceptable in Wikipedia articles. Be sure to familiarize yourself with all three. The principles upon which these policies are based cannot be superseded by other policies or guidelines, or by editors' consensus. If you violate these policies, your article may be subject to sharp criticism, correction, and even deletion! It is strongly recommended that you review the Wikipedia Neutral Point of View Tutorial to understand what is meant by a neutral point of view in Wikipedia articles.

Comments and Procedures

The editors at WikiProject Mesoamerica will do their best to help out and advise where we can, without intruding on assignments before they get marked & published to mainspace. Please feel free to contact any of of the WikiProject Mesoamerica editors for editing how-to's or leave a message at the Mesoamerica project's discussion board WT:MESO.

Instead of developing your article on you userpage or user talkpage, please set up a user subpage for it by saving a link on their main userpage consisting of a backslash followed by the proposed article title (or "Draft" or any text, really), like this: [[/Article title]]. Then just click on that link to create the new subpage, which will be created at User:Student username/Article title. Add some text, save it, and away you go. For convenience, you can transclude your working draft subpage onto their main userpage so it's visible from there, by adding {{User:Student username/Article title}} to the main userpage somewhere.

Citing Sources

It is very important to provide citations for the sources you are using I urge you to go to the information on citing sources for information about how to do it. To see how it's done, look at models in other Wikipedia entries. A particular referencing system that is good when you're just starting out is one Wikipedia calls WP:CITESHORT. To use this style, build a separate bibliography of sources towards the end of the article (in a separate section called "References"). Within the body of the text itself, make individual citations using shortened cites that correspond to an entry in references section by adding cites in the form of <ref>Smith 2008: 123</ref> after the statement to be cited. Your references will appear in a section called "Notes" followed by the list of references. For an example of how this is used, look at the code in the entry on Mayanism.

Sources of Ideas

You may have to search a bit to find good article topics that haven't already been created, but there is always work to be done in modifying and improving existing entries. There are many good sources of ideas for needed articles online. If you scroll up on my talk page, you'll find some discussions of similar assignments (and example entries) that I've had students do in the past. Of course, the best way to get ideas for a model entry is to look at ones that already exist. You should also consider some of the priorities of the WikiProject Mesoamerica a, but please make sure the topic that you pick is relevant to ancient Maya issues. That is, topics relevant to Maya civilization.

Wish List

This is a list (that you should feel free to edit and expand) of either existing entries that need expansion or articles that do not yet exist in Wikipedia. Feel free to choose one of these for your project and to suggest additional projects for your classmates. (This list will grow as I and others contribute ideas.)

Examples of Model Entries

None of these are perfect, but nonetheless good models for the kind of work I'd like to see.

Examples of Wikipedia entries created or substantially edited by KU students in previous semesters:

KU Student Authors (Spring 2012)

Please sign this list (with four tildes) once you've created your Wikipedia user account. You should also add a short statement about what entry you'll be creating or working on. (You can see how your user page should appear by clicking on those of other students.)

The Ancient Maya (KU Spring 2012)

Add your username to the list below by editing this section, typing an asterisk and four tildes in the list below. When you save your editing, it will look like this:

'Your completed assignment should be hyperlinked from this page, ideally to your User page. If you have been editing an existing entry, I will be looking at the version that was completed as of the due date.'

When you've chosen a topic, please add it in front of your name. If it is an existing entry, provide a hyperlink. The form should look like this (if you're editing an existing entry):

or like this (if you're creating a new entry):

Wikipedia Assignments for "History of Anthropology" at KU (Fall 2012)

Your assignment (due October 5, 2012) is to make a meaningful contribution of at least 1500 words (not counting the code that includes relevant hyperlinks) to Wikipedia in the form of either a new biographical entry on a specific individual relevant to the history of anthropology. You must select an individual for whom there is not already an existing Wikipedia entry. You can scan many existing entries by following External Links on this website, or you can search Wikipedia on your own. You may select an individual at any time prior to the assignment due date, but note that each individual must be approved in advance. One reason for this is that it would be best if multiple students are not creating biographical entries for the same person. Another is that it will have to be confirmed that there is not a pre-existing entry.

Your entry and/or editing should be in the style of current Wikipedia content, including relevant headings and subheadings, hyperlinks, and (especially) references. It will be graded on the basis of overall appearance as well as the value of its content and the degree to which it contributes to the value of the resource. Individuals who have played specific roles as informants or about whom anthropologists have written significant life histories are also appropriate. In selecting individuals, it may be best to choose those who are deceased rather than creating entries for people who are living. This is both a way of honoring those who are no longer with us and of avoiding any issues with living people.

Disambiguation link notification for October 19

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Josiah Priest, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Native American and American (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

The article Forgotten technology has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

See WP:NOTDICDEF

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. The following are some entries initially created by KU students:

Entries for Revision

The following entries already exist but are in need of substantial revision. If you decide to take one of these, please sign after it (with four tildes) so other students will know it's already taken.

You may also find topics needing cleanup, revision, or other improvement listed on the following page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Pages_needing_attention/Pseudoscience

Possible New Entries

The following is a partial wish list of just some of the entries that I would like to see created (in red) and/or improved (in blue). Please feel free to add additional entries that you would like to see! (I'll be adding more, too, as I find time.) If you decide to take one of these, please sign after it (with four tildes) so other students will know it's already taken. For a list of existing topics in the pseudoscience category, see Category:Pseudoscience.

Topics

  • Hyperdiffusionism - a term used to refer to theories about ancient voyages from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia to the Americas. This entry should link to entries for specific hyperdiffusionist scholars such as Grafton Elliot Smith, Charles Hapgood, Ivan van Sertima, and Barry Fell. (This has now been chosen.)

Individuals

Note that others that may be relevant and appropriate can be found in the "Index of Names" that begins on p. 393 of Stephen Willams' book Fantastic Archaeology: The Wild Side of North American Prehistory.

  • William Perry - early 20th century advocate of diffusionism and co-author of books with anthropologist Grafton Elliot Smith]. (This will require a disambiguation page to distinguish him from others with the same name.)
  • George Carter - 20th century archaeologist; author of Earlier Than You Think: A Personal View of Man in America. (He's not yet one of the George Carters listed on the disambiguation page.)
  • Hertha von Dechend - co-author, with Giorgio de Santillana of Hamlet's Mill (1969).
  • Rand Flem-Ath - co-author of When the Sky Fell and The Atlantis Blueprint.
  • J. Norman Emerson - Canadian archaeologist who "pioneered Intuitive Archaeology."
  • Stephen Jett - Advocate for ancient transoceanic travel.
  • Hunbatz Men - New Age Maya spiritual leader.
  • Alejandro Cirilo Pérez Oxlaj - New Age-influenced K'iche' Maya leader
  • Angelos Galanopoulos - Greek archaeologist who has investigated realities behind the legend of Atlantis
  • Lawrence E. Joseph - author of Apocalypse 2012 (See his website at Lawrence Joseph)
  • Vyvyan Deacon - early 20th century occultist

Places

Note: Also acceptable would be entries on archaeological sites formerly attributed to Moundbuilders such as those sites (many of which have been altered or destroyed ) that were described in the 1894 publication by Cyrus Thomas.

  • Heiligenberg - archaeological site near Heidelberg (see Ch. 7, p. 167 in Archaeological Fantasies); this will require an addition to the disambiguation page

Objects

  • Naacal Tablets - engraved objects claimed to have been found by William Niven. Also known as the "Niven tablets" or "Niven stones".

Organizations

  • Debvabhasa school of Indian revisionism - see Ch. 9 (p. 217) in Archaeological Fantasies

Main page appearance: 2012 phenomenon

This is a note to let the main editors of 2012 phenomenon know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 20, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 20, 2012. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegates Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), Gimmetoo (talk · contribs), and Bencherlite (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Inscription in the Mesoamerican Long Count

The 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of eschatological beliefs according to which cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on 21 December 2012. This date is regarded as the end-date of a 5,125-year cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. Various astronomical alignments and numerological formulae have been proposed as pertaining to this date, though none have been accepted by mainstream scholarship. A New Age interpretation of this transition is that this date marks the start of a time in which Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era. Others suggest that the date marks the end of the world or a similar catastrophe. Scenarios suggested for the end of the world include the arrival of the next solar maximum, an interaction between Earth and the black hole at the centre of the galaxy, or Earth's collision with a planet called "Nibiru". Scholars from various disciplines have dismissed the idea of such cataclysmic events occurring in 2012. Mayanist scholars state that predictions of impending doom are not found in any of the extant classic Maya accounts, and that the idea that the Long Count calendar "ends" in 2012 misrepresents Maya history and culture. I'd be happy to change the image, as long as the new image is in the public domain. Serendipodous 10:28, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Mayanism

1) unless the book says "i am a mayanist", it cannot be used call him a mayanist, but even if he did explicitly say that, the content in the article called out him as having a unique/important/pathbreaking/new status or view on the subject, and he certainly cannot be a source for that type of phrasing in article content about his own work. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 01:37, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

You see Hoopes? Even RPoD made that mistake. I hesitate to say "I told you so", but... ;-) Serendipodous 13:39, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

I find this patently ridiculous. Are Wikipedia editors incapable of reading definitions in Wikipedia articles? This person doesn't seem to have read or comprehended the article for Mayanist! Do I need to say "I am an archaeologist" for someone to identify me as one? How about a chemist, ecologist, or conservationist? Hoopes (talk) 00:58, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Need your help

One of your edits has been challenged over at Talk:2012 phenomenon. Serendipodous 08:12, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

I've been in Mexico without good editing access since December 18. Could you point out the specific issue? I'm glad the proposal to delete this article was rejected. The 2012 phenomenon was hardly about the spurious "doomsday" hype alone. Just as the effects of the Harmonic Convergence of August 1987 are still being felt twenty-five years later, the books, discussions, and happenings associated with the "Maya Apocalypse" will also have lasting effects. It's also worth noting in the history of other counterculture landmarks. Hoopes (talk) 00:56, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
It's been archived. Check the latest archive under "McKenna misrepresented". How was your trip to Mexico? I read you being quoted by journalists, Serendipodous 01:00, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Hoopes, I strongly advise you to remove that comment about Jenkins; you do NOT want to set Mardyks off. And he HATES John Major Jenkins. Serendipodous 22:53, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Which comment? On the talk page? Mardyks' obsessions are his problem, not mine. Hoopes (talk) 05:10, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Blue Star Kachina

I stumbled on Wikipedia:Blue Star Kachina while scanning for typos. It has been moved to the wrong namespace. Since you've been reviewing the draft, could you either move it back to userspace or accept it as an article? -- John of Reading (talk) 09:07, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

DYK for La Ciudad Blanca

Graeme Bartlett (talk) 16:04, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Why?

Why do you feel the need to attack me with every comment you make on Talk:La Ciudad Blanca? Are you incapable of expressing your opinion without accusing me of wrong doing? You are wrong about my POV, you are wrong about why I used the sources I did, and you are wrong about my intentions. I have told you this repeatedly, and yet you keep spouting the same garbage. Even if you were right about me, it is not helpful to keep saying what you think about me over and over again. If you cannot discuss the article without making accusations about my POV, reasons for editing, etc., then we can't move forward and I will seek third party input to make you stop. Being right is no excuse for abusing other editors and I've had all the abuse I am willing to put up with from you. --ThaddeusB (talk) 19:15, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

I thought we had been through this already. At least one person who commented on the talk page for the article said they thought my points were valid and that your comments had been more heavily ad hominem than mine. Note that I am not criticizing you but your insistence on editing the article in such a way that it reflects your own POV. If you don't think you're doing that, then let's bring in a third party to do a reality check for us both and render an opinion. I really don't think how you feel about having your editing critiqued is the main issue here. What matters is the quality of the article, which your edits have diminished, and your willingness to allow other editors, including myself, to edit this article in a fashion different from the way that you have. Wikipedia editing is a collaborative process and it is not right for you to be a bully and "make me stop" improving this article. Hoopes (talk) 20:09, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
Also, if we're going to have this resolved by a third party, it is not fair for that to be some friend of yours. If a disinterested and qualified third party can't be identified, we should each find an experienced Wikipedia editor to mediate this dispute. Hoopes (talk) 20:13, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
I never said anything about seeking a friend of mine (extremely ironic that you sought friends of yours after posting this). That was an inaccurate assumption on your part. I disengaged in the personal attacks after we came to an agreement to stop; since that point, they have all been by you. The IP also said "you both have good points" (and then specified exactly zero specific points that were good, making the whole thing useless), but you ignored that part of course. --ThaddeusB (talk) 00:08, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
You claim that I "sought friends of mine" after posting today that is not correct. Please stop impugning me with falsehoods based on your erroneous interpretations. A couple of weeks ago, I sought advice from a "friend" User:Dougweller, a Wikipedia editor who I have gotten to know mostly through Wikipedia and who I have since befriended via email and Facebook. However, he tells me he is too busy right now to help. Today, I made requests on the talk pages of two Wikipedia editors who I do not consider "friends," but who I know from other positive interactions. I have communicated via Wikipedia with User:CJLL Wright concerning Wikipedia:WikiProject Mesoamerica and with User:Serendipodous concerning the article on the 2012 phenomenon. This afternoon, I posted requests on the talk pages of Wikipedia:WikiProject Archaeology and Wikipedia:WikiProject Central America, both of which have been identified as ones within whose scope the La Ciudad Blanca article falls. I also posted requests on the talk pages of 2-3 Wikipedia editors with whom I have never communicated before who are affiliated with these groups and identified themselves on the relevant pages as having expertise in the relevant areas of Honduras and archaeology. You complain about my "attacks" on you, but your comments such as "you ignored that part of course" are tinged with ad hominem hostility. Please stop the negative personal comments and focus on improving the quality of the article!!! Hoopes (talk) 00:33, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
You are correct - after having repeatedly denied the same false accusations about me for weeks, I have resorted to "ad hominem hostility". I suppose the fact that you have successfully made me respond angerly means your many ad hominem attacks against my character are OK. --ThaddeusB (talk) 00:46, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
No, I have not made you respond angrily. You are responsible for your own emotions. You must refrain from resorting to ad hominem hostility and focus on neutrality. Please desist from personal attacks. I am also seeking help on this issue on the Administrators' noticeboard. Hoopes (talk) 00:49, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
Right, you can throw "ad hominem hostility" at me for weeks even after I repeatedly ask you to stop, but when I respond in kind it is all my fault and you never did anything wrong. Understood! --ThaddeusB (talk) 00:53, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
For the record, this is yet another request: Please desist from personal attacks. Hoopes (talk) 01:01, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
