Five Pillars of Wikipedia

Float around for awhile until you find something that tickles your fancy. One easy way to do this is to hit the random page button in the navigation bar to the left. There are also many great committees and groups that focus on particular jobs. My personal favorite stomping grounds are Wikipedia:Translation into English and Wikipedia:Cleanup for sloppy articles. Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has several other wiki projects that you might enjoy.

There are a few crucial points to keep in mind when editing. Be civil with users, strive to maintain a neutral point of view, verify your information, and show good etiquette like signing your comments with four tildes like this: ~~~~ If you have any more questions, always feel free to ask me anything on my talk page or ask the true experts at Wikipedia:Help desk. Again, welcome! -- Draeco 20:47, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

TSR logos

Hi HeMan5, great idea to upload the logos of the Swiss-French television channels TSR1 and TSR2. Only problems, as far as I know, is that they are going to change in January. Do you happen to have copies of the new one(s) ? Schutz 01:14, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi HeMan5. I have added the above image to WP:IFD as it has been replaced by Image:BBC-canada-ident.jpg in the BBC Canada article. Hope you don't mind. You can object to its deletion at the subpage on WP:IFD for December 28. Thanks for the rest of your edits! Wikiwoohoo 16:30, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Copyrighted material

I noticed that in your original articles about tv channels, you included material that was copied and pasted from each channel's website. In the future, do not do so, even if you cite where you got it from, as it is illegal. ErikNY 06:41, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Tv channel advertising

Your various stub articles on specialist tv and cable channels looks pretty close to advertising to me. I have removed mosts of the advertorial elements and have them on watch list. Keep it neutral please and don't use the article as a plug! Brookie :) - a collector of little round things! (Talk!) 08:25, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Brookie here - thanks for the note - the way you posted the articles looked like an advert - if not - good - just be be more careful when clipping and pasting - otherwise it looks like you are pushing a POV. Brookie :) - a collector of little round things! (Talk!) 17:05, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

External links

hi. I notced you have been changing "External links" to "External Links" etc. This is a no-no (even though I personally think it looks better :P), see The Manual of Style -- getcrunkjuicecontribs 13:55, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

I didn't know the rule either, when I was new. I used to change "links" to "Links" too, then I read the FAQ and all those "style" and "guideline" pages, & I think my edits got much better because then I knew the Wikipedia style. Like the user below said, it's nice to follow the WP style. -- getcrunkjuicecontribs 09:20, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Hate to bother you again, but I see that you're still doing this. A typical Wikipedia article would contain it's links section as "External links", and it should be noted as an "External link" if there's only one link. Once again, it is strongly recommended that you follow the Wikipedia standard for an article. ErikNY 03:07, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
    • Don't worry, you won't get kicked out. The thing with "External Links" for one link can easily be changed once someone adds another link. It just doesn't look right when "links" consists of one link. I can change back each one myself, and I think there are bots out there that someone else can change them with. No hard feelings in anything wrong you've done, I just wanted every Wikipedia article to remain consistent in it's format. Sorry for the trouble. ErikNY 04:28, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
    • If you want to change the title of an existing article, just click on move at the top of a page, and type down the new name for the article you want to move with a reason. If you are unable to move an article to the intended name, ask an admin to do it, since they have that power. Here is a link if you have a conflict with moving the title, and follow the instructions. ErikNY 04:59, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

TV series titles in italics

I hope you don't mind, but I changed the tv series titles back to italics on List of programs broadcast by Mega Channel (talk) and List of programs broadcast by ANT1 (talk). This is in accordance with the WP Manual of Style regarding titles. Sorry! - ApolloCreed 00:58, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Adding Useless Info

Why are you insisting on adding every television show that airs on every television channel? There is no need of adding all this useless info, if people want to know the shows that air on a specific channel that can go to the television channels website. This makes the article look messy and inorganized. If you want just list sertain series within the article or make a headline for "Noted Programs" or something. Or at least if you do add the shows, clean it up and make it look as neat and organized as possible. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.198.108.51 (talk • contribs) .

RE: Copyrights issues with Images

Hi, ALL the images I have uploaded are specified as 'LOGOS', they have a copyright attached to them. I am not sure where you are finding these images that don't have a copyright license, most likely someone is changing them. Just change the copyright licence to 'logo', you don't need to post a message everytime you find one. HeMan5 23:43, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Problem is that I'm working through a list of approximately 7000 of these images. It's a lot faster to have an automated process notify uploaders than it is to try to deal with each image individually. If you want the license tags fixed, you'll have to do it yourself. --Carnildo 07:29, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging for Image:Barney_Miller.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Barney_Miller.jpg. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to indicate why we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies under Wikipedia's fair use guidelines, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you want the image to be deleted, tag it as {{db-unksource}}.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.

May i ask you, where did you get the logos for RTV Pink and RTV BN. If you don't list the source, the images will probably be deleted.

External links, revisited

Hello... I noticed that you are going through and changing a lot of "External links" section headers to "External link" in articles where there is only one link in the section. You might want to take a look at this section of the Style Guide. While there is no defined standard for the "External links" section, I thought you should know that ErikNY's note from January wasn't entirely correct. ("A typical Wikipedia article would contain it's links section as "External links", and it should be noted as an "External link" if there's only one link.") The "links/link" issue is, at present, entirely a matter of personal preference, so don't feel you have to change single entry sections to "link" as neither style is "correct". As you might guess from this note, I lean towards the "External links" side, as I think it creates greater consistency across the articles. Also, I tend to think that the title is a reflection of the purpose - a space for links to external sites - rather than a strict count of the number of links. Anyways, food for thought. All that aside, of course, thanks for the contributions to the project! --Ckatz 18:30, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello... sorry if I wasn't clear... as I said, I lean towards the "External links" camp, but my point wasn't that you had to do that too. It was to let you know that when ErikNY left you that note, he/she was actually incorrect to state that it was a Wikipedia rule. If you prefer "External link", then by all means make the changes, as is your right. However, just be aware that someone else is equally correct to go in and change it back. There is no convention, and it is entirely up to the editor to decide how he/she wants to label the section. (See here for details.) So, you didn't get "burned" on that issue - you were given the wrong information. Don't feel compelled to act on incorrect statements. (By the way, the "people in charge" are all of us editors. The administrators watch out to make sure the rules are obeyed, but it is the community at large that actually creates the standards. FYI...) --Ckatz 06:15, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

The logo that was already there, for some reason it doesn't show up in the article, when you edit it the file name is still there bu tit won't show up in the article. I added a new logo to the page and it shows up. When you reverted back to the other logo and I viewed it, the logo didn't show up again, so I went back to the logo that I had added. Now I don't know if you've noticed, but pictures have been disappearing from wikipedia pages for some reason, I don't know why. And when you go to edit them the file name is still there in the edit page. It seems to be happening a lot especially ni the galleries. Sorry man, but when you edited the TV Land logo I viewed the page after and I couldn't see any logo on the page so I reverted back to the other logo and then it appeared on the page. I don't know whats happeneing and why I couldn't see the logo and you could, but I was just going by what I saw. 69.198.108.51 16:32, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Channel i.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Channel i.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 02:31, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

I've said in my edit summary that I don't want to start an edit war over the link name, why do you insist it should be shortened? Michaelas10 13:32, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Exactly, I'm not really sure about the URL/link name you gave. Not that it really matters, I've changed it to 'Official website'. Michaelas10 16:51, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

External links, again!

Will you please stop changing every single link title to 'Official site'. GMctalk 20:21, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Please do not remove speedy deletion tags from articles, as you did with The Erotic Network. If you do not believe the article deserves to be deleted, then please place {{hangon}} on the page and make your case on the article's talk page. Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the article. Thank you. Leuko 03:48, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

He created it again and I just speedied it. If it's recreated three times without adequate content, then a block is called for. --DanielCD 03:45, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
I agree, but I think he should be warned first. Leuko 03:49, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

You have recently re-created the article The Erotic Network, which was deleted in accordance with Wikipedia's deletion policies. Please do not re-create the article. If you disagree with the article's deletion, you may ask for a deletion review. Leuko 03:48, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

It's ok to create articles on notable topics, but please make sure you add adequate context to let the reader know what it is and why it is notable, preferable with some refs. If you need help, ask any admin, but don't continue to make nonsense articles. --DanielCD 03:53, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
OK I saw the older version. I just saw the "Where's the article" version, which I re-deleted. If you need help, feel free to ask. --DanielCD 03:56, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
I think it should be allowed to go through AFD. Give me a minute and perhaps we can bring it back up and do that. Then you will have a chance to defend it and get support. But it can't read like an advertisement. --DanielCD 04:01, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
OK, article is resurrected but is still in AFD. You have five days to defend the article and improve it. If no one has problems, then it will be kept. I don't think there will be strong opposition, so work on wording it so it's not sounding like SPAM. If you don't say anything, it may just get chopped, so make a response. If you need help, let me know. --DanielCD 04:11, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

When I first deleted the article, all I saw was "Where's the article?", and figured it was nonsense. I failed to look into the history to see what was really going on. As it is, I probably wouldn't have messed with it. However, since others have had the problems I noted with it, I decided to let it go through AFD. It's NOT on the verge of deletion. Just say on the deletion page (here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Erotic Network) why you think the deletion is wrong. Usually when articles like this go through AFD, ppl add to them and improve them so they can be kept. I think it will survive. As for the other article, I don't know exactly. --DanielCD 04:40, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Your makemi delete

Hey Buddy, where's my article, why did you delete it?? I see no justification for deleting it, spam my a$$!! Why don't you write a better one, instead of going around deleting other people's articles. Under what authority can you delete articles, I would like to know??? HeMan5 04:38, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Hello, we had problems with terrible administrators like makemi in the past, let's do something about him, what else did he do? My God, these administrators, they think they owe the whole world and to them it's all spam. And wales, the so called owner of wikipedia probably is teaching them how to delete links of interest. Let's get something done, we already have their interest. They are already reversing this and more... -George

Not sure what you are talking about

Been reverting massive deletions of another person, not you, but [1]. For some reason, this person took it upon him/herself to delete all the sattelite links and to turn all "External links" into "External link," with NO edit summaries explaining the behavior. Kukini 23:33, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Edit Summary Request

I have noted that you edit without an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This is considered an important guideline in Wikipedia. Even a short summary is better than no summary. An edit summary is even more important if you delete any text; otherwise, people may think you're being sneaky or even vandalizing. Also, mentioning one change but not another one can be misleading to someone who finds the other one more important; add "and misc." to cover the other change(s). Thanks! This should help avoid confusion about deletions and additions made. -- Kukini 23:37, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Please do not delete notices on your user talk page

You may create archives, which I would be happy to help you do. But the notices and warnings on your talk page are supposed to be left as an evidence trail of your work. Much thanks, Kukini 00:14, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

I am referring to this edit [2] wherein you were told things such as "Please do not remove speedy deletion tags from articles, as you did with The Erotic Network." by User:Leuko and other such notices. These sorts of notices are not to be deleted from your talk page, please. Also, please respond to me here User talk:Kukini, and not in my archives. I understand some of these rules can get a bit difficult. I have a template you might find handy to learn more about wikiculture. I will leave it for you below. Best wishes, Kukini 00:37, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia!!!

Hello HeMan5! Welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. If you decide that you need help, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Please remember to sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. You may also push the signature button located above the edit window. Finally, please do your best to always fill in the edit summary field. This is considered an important guideline in Wikipedia. Even a short summary is better than no summary. Below are some recommended guidelines to facilitate your involvement. Happy Editing! -- Kukini 00:37, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Cleaning links

I started to go back and clean things up from the IP edit problem we had earlier today. I don't have time to finish them right away, and they need to be done one at a time...even for an administrator (at least for one of my limited talent). I am sorry for the trouble. Please be sure that we stick with "External links" for each header of external links, regardless of current number, and please consider not editing out previous links, unless it is clear that they are no longer valid. Best, Kukini 02:16, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Go ahead and be bold and use edit summaries along the way. Peace, Kukini 02:37, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

RE: Name changes to CDN TV Channels

Hi, yeah sorry for not adding summaries to the edits, I always keep forgetting about putting them in. I'll deff try to add them to any other edits I make.

I thought putting Canada in brackets would be a better fit for the articles name. I mean I don't think the official name of "Animal Planet" is "Animal Planet Canada". It's really just called Animal Planet and happens to be in Canada. I thought putting Canada in brackets would let readers know that the name is really Animal Planet but it's a Canadian version of the American channel. I did this to most but left others alone such as BBC Canada and CourtTV Canada because these channels use Canada as part of their official name.

Sorry for not including the edit summaries again and I hope that explanation made sense :P ~The artist formally known as '''Cdn_boi'''~ 01:03, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:KICX 106.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:KICX 106.jpg.

History merge

Hi HeMan5

The article was deleted in order to do a history merge - as described in the history of the article. This has taken longer as it should as it appears that the editor who requested it didn't realise that another step was required in doing the merge.

There are several reasons why a history merge was needed. First, under the GDFL licence, we need to keep a record of who edited what and where. If there are two articles on the same subject, we need to make sure that merging into one keeps the details of all who edited both articles.

The other reason is that, if an article title is wrong, it is very very bad to copy-and-paste the information from one title to another - if this happens, the history is destroyed, the GDFL licence is broken and a lot of work is generated for others to do. This is what happened when the article was changed in title this time. I have spent 20 minutes sorting out this mistake and it is now solved.

I hope that explains things for you. You might like to read our page Wikipedia:How to fix cut and paste moves to see how the process worked; Wikipedia:Requested moves is where you can go to request a move if you create an article in the wrong place; and Wikipedia:Assume good faith is a useful page to remind us all that, if we don't understand what happened, going off with all guns blazing is usually a bad idea.

Hope this helps and happy editing! REDVEЯS 09:59, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

AfD nomination of TeleAsty

I've nominated TeleAsty, an article you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that TeleAsty satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion; I have explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/TeleAsty and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of TeleAsty during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Orphaned fair use image (Image:TCM.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:TCM.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
