Thanks !!

Thanks a bunch for your contributions on the Ben Daniels article! I really needed somebody to fix/clean/add some stuff there.ResurgamII 14:08, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome! Happened to chance upon it from another article, started fixing one or two things, and ended up doing a general cleanup. Unfortunately that's what happens with Wikipedia... ;-) Cheers, Jacklee 02:27, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

President of Singapore

I edited the article President of Singapore to add a section on the Presidential Elections Committee not in order to remove the qualification but to make it clear who decides who can run for president. The article needs to make this much clearer. However, I leave the wording of that section to you. --Ghormax 14:46, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

I've posted a reply in Talk:President_of_Singapore#Presidental_Elections_Committee. Cheers, Jacklee 21:51, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

It is a good idea to leave the red link to Hoxton Square if you think the article should exist, or in due course will exist. Red links can prompt article creation. I suggest reverting, as the Square is well known enough to generate its own article. Tyrenius 02:23, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Sure. I removed it because I noticed that there was already a link to 'Hoxton' earlier in the article. Cheers, Jacklee 06:05, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Now you've reinstated it, maybe you might be tempted to start the article! Tyrenius 01:14, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Not within my area of expertise, I'm afraid. :-) Cheers, Jacklee 01:24, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Jan Kaplický

Hello Jacklee, thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia but I think that it is not a place for April jokes as you did by renaming Jan Kaplický to Jan Kapličký. I am wondering how did you "invent" the new spelling. I was born in Bohemia and I live there for 31 years but I have never seen surname Kapličký, it does not exist in this and surrounding regions or Czech language. In every Czech book or newspaper you will find the correct name: Jan Kaplický. --pabouk 07:24, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

It was certainly not meant as an April Fool's joke. I was following the spelling used in the newspaper article Woodman, Ellis (2007-03-31). "The Library has Landed". The Daily Telegraph (Review). {{cite news}}: Check date values in: |date= (help) I suppose the journalist who wrote that article must have got it wrong. Sorry about that. Cheers, Jacklee 11:30, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
I just realized that the on-line version of the article spells the surname "Kaplický" correctly. I read the newspaper version of the article – it was spelled "Kapličký" there. Anyway, thanks a lot for reverting the mistakes. Cheers, Jacklee 11:43, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

(The discussion continues at Talk:Jan Kaplický.)

Thanks for uploading Image:GardarThorCortes.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. Ben Daniels

Hi Jacklee, Ben Daniels' a friend and wanted to correct a couple of errors on this page, but has never edited a wiki-article, doesn't know how to do it, so he asked me... I just thought I'd clear it with you (as the main editor of this page) before doing anything... Tomandlu 19:16, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Tomandlu, I'm not really the "main editor" of the page. I didn't create the article, but visited it a couple of times to do a cleanup. In any case, no one "owns" Wikipedia articles – they are freely editable by any user as long as the edits don't amount to vandalism. Do go ahead and improve the article by correcting any errors and adding additional information.
By the way, an administrator has tagged the photographs that are currently featured in the article as violating Wikipedia's "fair use policy". This means that the photographs are likely to be deleted in a week's time unless it can be shown that the use of the photographs complies with the fair use policy, which may be difficult to show. Does Ben have any photographs that we can use with his permission? We would need confirmation from him (or from someone who is authorized on his behalf) that the photographs can be used under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation Licence (GNU-FDL, or GFDL for short). This means that although he would retain the copyright and authorship of the photographs, he would be granting permission for others to use, copy, and share the images freely, and even potentially use them commercially, so long as they do not try to claim the copyright themselves, or try to prevent others from using or copying them freely (e.g., "share-alike"). The licence can be read in full at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_the_GNU_Free_Documentation_License. Wikipedia uses the GFDL because the organization considers it the best available tool for ensuring the encyclopedia can remain free for all to use, while providing credit to everyone who donates text and images.
(I'll put a copy of this conversation in "Talk:Ben Daniels".) Cheers, Jacklee 20:15, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
PS If possible, please cite the sources for facts that you put into the article. Thanks. Cheers, Jacklee 20:31, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Article on Singapore lawyer

You may want to edit/correct Glenn Knight, an article on one old chap in SG legal profession who popped up again in The Straits Times today after a hiatus of more than ten years... ;) Resurgent insurgent 2007-04-25 14:55Z

Wow, you did a good job putting up that article in such a short space of time! How did you manage to access all those newspaper articles? Cheers, Jacklee 21:59, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
One word: Factiva. Thanks to them I can read decades of old newspapers without flipping through sepia newsprint - and for free. :) Resurgent insurgent 2007-04-26 00:01Z
It's great to have access to Factiva. Unfortunately I don't have any. Cheers, Jacklee 21:40, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for responding for me on the article's talk. Resurgent insurgent 14:01, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Congratulations on getting "Glenn Knight" to Good Article status! Cheers, Jacklee 15:16, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Classical composer infobox

Hello Jacklee, take a look at [1]; also at [2]. I might have been exaggerating in calling this a consensus, but so far it seems that the anti-infobox-for-composers faction has been maintaining its hold. Yours truly, Opus33 19:52, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Right, thanks for this. Cheers, Jacklee 19:56, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Garðar Thór Cortes an opera singer

Yes, by all means restore the banner if you think it's appropriate. It would also be a good idea to remove the infobox as these are not used for opera. Thanks. -- Kleinzach 13:06, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Oh, why are infoboxes not used for opera singers? Cheers, Jacklee 13:16, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
See WP:WPO Section 15. "We deplore the use of generic infoboxes that have not been designed with opera in mind, and contain factual errors and ambiguities." Many projects now reject them. Cheers. -- Kleinzach 13:34, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Boosey & Hawkes

Hi, well done on all the work you are doing for this page, I have been doing a little research myself intending to do an article on Boosey & Co. Are you certain that John Boosey's lending library was a music lending library as the references I found to it don't mention music? Thanks Gustav von Humpelschmumpel 00:38, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome. Please do add to the article, and write a proper introductory paragraph for it if you'd like to do so. I got the information on John Boosey's music lending library from the newspaper article Wachman, Richard (2005-09-18). "Boosey & Hawkes Up for Sale as Owner Seeks Quick £80m". The Observer. {{cite news}}: Check date values in: |date= (help), so I can't really say how accurate that is. By the way, you don't happen to live in London, do you? A photograph of the Boosey & Hawkes Music Shop at 295 Regent Street would be great for illustrating the article. (I'll put a copy of these messages in the Talk page of the article so that we can continue the discussion there, if necessary.) Cheers, Jacklee 00:47, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Singaporean patriotic songs

Many thanks for adding to the article. I was going to do it but didn't think I would have time until later in 2007. I am sure that I would not have done as good a job as you did! VK35 15:54, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

You're most welcome. I was looking at the article, one thing led to another, and I ended up doing a bigger cleanup than I intended to. Do continue adding to the article – I'm sure there are many other patriotic songs apart from those already listed in the article, particularly those with non-English lyrics. Cheers, Jacklee 18:02, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Lloyd Owen

This table is more like other actors' tables, such as Daniel Radcliffe. I prefer it as it is much neater, and don't think its at all confusing. Also, there's nothing factually wrong with it, of course the years don't line up with the medium because Lloyd Owen performed in multiple mediums in the same year. The entries themselves line up perfectly. Though the citation might not be necessary, a claim refering to "first love" sounds like poetic license on the editor's part, so its somewhat important that he says it himself. Certainly you can agree that there's nothing wrong with the citation. Atropos 00:23, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I just received a standard notice from you about Image:SingaporeStone-bwphoto.jpg. I did state the reason why I believe the image is not replaceable on the "image" page – did you read it before tagging the image with {{di-replaceable fair use}}? If so, what are your reasons for disagreeing with the explanation? It is rather dispiriting to receive a standard notice when I did take the time to explain why I believe the image to be non-replaceable. Cheers, Jacklee 19:40, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

I replied on my talk page. – Quadell (talk) (random) 19:43, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi there. I was cleaning up some speedy-tagged images and came across this one. Your tag said that you could just use the standard [[:Image]] syntax to access images from other language Wikipedias. You can't, though - this ability only applies to images on Commons:. Are you sure you want the image deleted still? I've removed the tag temporarily. Splash - tk 21:25, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. Someone posted a message on "Talk:Ulrich Mühe" that there was a GFDL-licensed image of German actor Ulrich Mühe in the article "de:Ulrich Mühe". This image was called "Bild:Mühe1.jpg", and I tried to do a search for it on the Commons but it doesn't exist there. At first I thought it wasn't possible to directly refer to images in Wikipedias of other languages, which is why I uploaded the image into the English Wikipedia, but then another editor simply updated the infobox in "Ulrich Mühe" with "Mühe1.jpg" in the appropriate field and the image appears. So it looks like it is possible after all, and Image:UlrichMuhe.jpg is redundant. Cheers, Jacklee 06:00, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
In fact, Image:Mühe1.jpg has been uploaded to the English Wikipedia also, and so that is where the image is coming from. Still, the image you originally tagged is an identical duplicate of that, so I'll go and delete it now. Splash - tk 09:32, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Oh, right. Didn't realize that was the case. Thanks! Cheers, Jacklee 09:36, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Questions

Srimati means Mrs. in Sanskrit, sometimes used to indicate esteemed Mrs. and name. It may or may not be a title. It is generally assumed by some one. Sometimes Srimati is also used as a name by itself amongst Hindus in general and Tamils in particular. In Neila’s case I think She is using it as honorific indicator that she is a married woman. Viswa Kala Baharathi is title given by an accredited dance school from Chennai to those who are spreading the Indian traditional cultural forms (such as Bharatnatyam) across the world. See hereTaprobanus 19:00, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

I checked all the Bharatnatyam teachers locally yesterday (from India and Sri Lanka or Canada) all of them use the title SMT for Srimati. Looks like a common usage across all teachers. Hope this helpsTaprobanus 12:18, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Re : Use of coat of arms of Singapore in templates

I based it off the guidelines of the official site. Didn't know their terms is more complicated than what the site offered. I note that the Supreme Court is also using the COA as their logo. At least there is a point of contact to actually ask. - Best regards, Mailer Diablo 18:41, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, yes, I'm aware of the Wikipedia:Featured articles process. So far, I've only been able to get one article, "Richard Hakluyt" (it's not a Singapore-related one), up to FA status, and you can see from "Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Richard Hakluyt" that it was a very tortuous process. I honestly don't think I have time right now to get any additional articles up to FA level as I'm busy working on my PhD. Which articles that I've worked on do you think are worth trying to get up to FA status? Cheers, Jacklee 21:55, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Ibid, etc.

Hi Jack

I was wondering if you would reconsider the use of "see above" or ibid. in your references because an intervening reference placed using <ref> tags will very likely create confusion. Perhaps a list of main references, and citing shortened titles will be preferable? --Rifleman 82 17:48, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Rifleman. It's my legal training, unfortunately. Yes, I've decided that it's probably best to avoid Latin abbreviations and have started to change them to "see above". (See the changes I've made to "Law of Singapore" and "Flag of Singapore".) Do help! Cheers, Jacklee 17:52, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Ah well. As a chemist, we (and other scientists) cite things quite differently. I for one, dislike the APA and Harvard styles. But anyway, whichever system used is fine, so long as it is consistent. But the problem with ref means that we have to be a bit careful. I'll help where I can. Cheers!--Rifleman 82 17:54, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Oh, sorry. Misunderstood your comment. What you're saying is that even "see above" may be confusing in the event of intervening footnotes. Yes, will be more careful about that, and where necessary add a shortened title. I used to try and avoid that problem by using "op. cit." (in the last place cited), but that is probably too obscure these days. Cheers, Jacklee 17:57, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Re: "Oscar Pistorius": {{Height}} template

Done. I've neglected to check the source - indeed, the cited figure should match. Hopefully this is OK now. GregorB 13:11, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:1993-ApplicationofEnglishLawAct-titlepg.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:1993-ApplicationofEnglishLawAct-titlepg.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 10:24, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Nationality guidelines

Thanks for the comment. By the way, I wasn't just ignoring your proposed guidelines: just taking a small step back to make sure we are all agreed on the points at issue before moving on. Plus, I was making sure that the "No guidelines" option was covered (although that would personally be my least-favoured option, as I would rather have a guideline that I disagreed with than none at all!) I'm glad you are still enthusiastic about moving this forward, despite some quite personal attacks by some of the contributors. Cheers. Bluewave 15:49, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. Well, the sharp and personally-directed comments were annoying, but there was no point in responding in kind as that would just divert attention away from the main issue. Anyway, it was heartening that a few editors noted the nature of that person's posts and gave him appropriate warnings. — Cheers, JackLee talk contribs count 23:26, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Warning IPs

* Sigh * Is there any point in warning anonymous IPs?

There actually is. Some don't realize we even know they did it. Anonymous editing is still traced back to them through their talk page. Dropping a warning clues them in to the fact that their edits aren't going unnoticed. A well placed {{WelcomeIP}} can stop vandalism in some cases. There are productive editors who started as vandals. I know an admin who started as a vandal. So don't overlook the positive outcomes that can come from a simple template on a talk page! :)
Additionally, repeat offenders warrant a block, however, we don't block unless they have received a full set of warnings and then they vandalized after a final warning. LaraLove 04:51, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Sup Ct edits

  • Re: image caption -- no particular guideline on point, so it's moot, but mentioning that it's HDR has its usefulness
  • Re: Sub Ct pics -- had mentioned in edit history it is an interim measure pending creation of Sub Ct article; if removed, pics will be forgotten. Chensiyuan (talk) 00:26, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
Hi, Chensiyuan, I really don't think it serves much purpose to provide readers of the article with technical information about how photographs illustrating the article were taken. If they are interested, they can click on the thumbnail and read the information on the image description page (I've already inserted the information there). As for the photographs of the Subordinate Courts, I would suggest that you park them on the talk page rather than the article page – they really have nothing to do with the subject of the article. — Cheers, JackLee talk 00:35, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Disagree about purpose, because HDRs contain exaggerated features, but like I said it's moot. As for pics, no they don't have "nothing" to do with the article; in any case I've created a stub for the Sub Cts, feel free to expand it. Chensiyuan (talk) 00:39, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Since you've indicated on your userpage an interest in the Sub Cts page, I'd let you expand it first, otherwise it might be counterproductive. Chensiyuan (talk) 00:55, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Is the statue James Smithson or Joseph Henry

I just wanted to let you know that I have read the inscription on the statue in front of the Smithsonian. It is definitely Joseph Henry. Here's a picture on Panoramio where you can read the inscription: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/4375101 Rsduhamel (talk) 20:53, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks very much. I've re-uploaded the image formerly known as "Smithson.jpg" under the name "JosephHenry-SmithsonianCastle-20051108.jpg" and have updated its description. I've also transferred "The Smithsonian Dude.jpg" from the English Wikipedia to the Commons under the name "JosephHenry-SmithsonianCastle-20050517.jpg". — Cheers, JackLee talk 23:58, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Flag of Singapore's GA nomination

Greetings, Jacklee. Dihidrogen Monoxide has partially reviewed Flag of Singapore and requested a second opinion. Could you address the concerns he raised while waiting for another reviewer to provide a second opinion? I should also remind you to respond to my comments on User talk:Hildanknight and Talk:Majulah Singapura.

--J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 15:32, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, J.L.W.S. I saw Dihydrogen Monoxide's comments this morning, and will try to address them this evening. — Cheers, JackLee talk 15:20, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
There are still a few issues that need to be addressed, notably the excessive detail in the "Guidelines for use" and "Display of non-Singaporean national emblems". Once these are dealt with, I hope the nomination receives a second opinion soon. As I previously said, you deserve a barnstar for your excellent contributions.
I have responded on Talk:Majulah Singapura, presenting several arguments for shortening the article. Finally, could you give me some tips for writing GAs? --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 03:34, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

This is to inform you that Ncmvocalist has provided a second opinion and placed the nomination on hold. His primary concern is that the "Usage Guidelines" section contains excessive information about the laws governing the use of our national flag and hence is not written in summary style. You have up to 26 December to address this concern, failing which the hold will expire and the GA nomination will be failed. --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 09:30, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I'm aware of that. Unfortunately, I was feeling quite ill yesterday. Am better today, so I hope to work on the article soon. — Cheers, JackLee talk 14:17, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
Ncmvocalist has finally commented on your attempts to address his concerns, one week after the hold was supposed to expire. The article remains on hold to allow you to further improve the article per his suggestions. By the way, both the "In general" and "At other times" sections mention the flag being lowered to half-mast during mourning affecting the nation; please remove one of the mentions, preferably the former. --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 14:40, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Rule numbers

If you look at my revision, you'll see using the {{rp}} template, you can cite precise rule numbers in the text, without having to put multiple references that say "see above, rule 5(7)". --Haemo (talk) 05:46, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Oh, right. Didn't realize that the rule numbers now appeared in superscript after the footnote numbers. Thanks for the suggestion; will think about it. One problem I see, though, is that some of the footnotes have additional text in them, which wouldn't look right appearing in the same manner as the footnote numbers. — Cheers, JackLee talk 13:02, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
