toolforge

Hello. I hope you are doing well.
Few months back, we had discussed a few things about pywikibot. I have been successfully running a pywikibot setup from toolforge since last few months (for Marathi wikipedia (mrwiki). In the beginning, the bot was running on grid. I think 4-5 months ago, I was told to migrate to buster grid, and I did so. Currently everything is being migrated to kubernetes. But the help/user guide pages are not very clear. Do you have any idea how to migrate the tool to kubernetes? I am also posting this query at VPT for more input. Regards, —usernamekiran (talk) 11:15, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

@Usernamekiran: Admittedly, even I am still just using the buster grid and didn't know they were starting to force people to migrate to Kubernetes. Are there any deadlines for this migration? Let me know if you get any more information. Mz7 (talk) 19:22, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
I am also curious to learn more about this. Please ping. TheSandDoctor Talk 19:24, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
@TheSandDoctor: I think I will find a workable method for migrating my cronjobs to kubernetes in a day or two. Regarding the deadline, I'm not sure if I read any or not, but the way they (borderline?) spammed phabricator gives me a feeling they are in a hurry. I will update you guys tomorrow or day after tomorrow. —usernamekiran (talk) 19:36, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

  • A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. Hi, I did not know that this "mentorship module" is a relatively new feature on Wikipedia. I am inclined to agree with you that we have no sockpuppetry going on with what's going at User talk:Oshwah. Cheers, Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 16:16, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

Yeah, I also didn’t know about the mentorship module until your SPI. Learn something new everyday. Mz7 (talk) 20:03, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

Hello Mz7,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Mz7 bot and transclusions

Do you think there's anything that could be done about Mz7 bot including transclusions in Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/SPI/Cases? See [24]. DatGuyTalkContribs 19:47, 28 January 2023 (UTC)

Oh wow, interesting bug. I’m a little busy this weekend, but I will look into this! Mz7 (talk) 22:28, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
Hmm. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure there is an easy way to skip those nested transclusions (i.e. a page transcludes AIV which transcludes the CU needed template). I think a better solution would be to have the bot simply ignore transclusions of the CU needed template in the User namespace and the Template namespace, which should be enough to eliminate most duplicate entries, and given the nature of those namespaces, it would be unlikely that the CU needed template would be used legitimately in those namespaces. Mz7 (talk) 08:01, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
Might be more expensive, but checking the text with a generator should work, see ApiSandbox. I assume there's a similar equivalent for pywikibot. DatGuyTalkContribs 09:12, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

TylerKutschbach

Hi! I'm an admin on Commons, and noticed that you found a bunch of blocked TylerKutschbach socks on Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/TylerKutschbach that you didn't list due to WP:DENY. TylerKutschbach is also active on disrupting Wikimedia Commons. If it's not too difficult, would you be willing to share the socks you didn't list via email so I can do some cross-wiki cleanup? Best, — Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 15:14, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

Collateral Damage on large IP block

Just noticed that the mobile IP range I am using today to log into Wikipedia is blocked (2600:1000:b100::/41). This isn't an issue for me because I have an account, but this is an incredibly large IP range (154,742,504,910,672,534,362,390,528 IPs) and there is certainly potential for collateral damage. TheManInTheBlackHat (Talk) 17:17, 10 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi TheManInTheBlackHat, thanks for the message! I am aware of the size of this range, and unfortunately, my view is that the block is justified in the short term in order to prevent persistent sock puppetry that has been occurring on it. It's a bit of a judgment call because indeed there will be unavoidable collateral damage. I am open to adjusting it if another administrator feels strongly on it. (Although the raw number of IP addresses seems alarming, note that in IPv6 addressing, a better upper bound for the number of individual networks affected is to look at the number of /64s in the range, which in this case is 8,388,608—still a lot, to be sure, but at least it's not bigger than a mole!) Mz7 (talk) 20:04, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
I see, thanks for the response! TheManInTheBlackHat (Talk) 20:55, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
