Request for help with Wadewitz-Wollstonecraft editathon (London, Saturday 31 May)

I could use some guidance and encouragement. I have a great venue (literally the Mary Wollstonecraft room) but am unsure how best to publicise this editathon. It just seemed wrong that Britain had not a single event for this scholar of British literature. And the Wadewitz memorial page said the events would all be in May. So I've whipped this together for the last day of the month. How can I best get the word out, on Wikipedia and elsewhere? I wrote the "official" (I guess) page for Wikimedia here, and I've listed it at Wikipedia:Wadewitz Tribute Edit-a-thons, but that doesn't feel like nearly enough. No one has signed up yet. Help! Carbon Caryatid (talk) 15:55, 25 May 2014 (UTC) . Carbon Caryatid (talk) 15:55, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Carbon. You can have an even whenever you want, the community and the academics Adrianne worked with (including me) wanted to have a condensed time period, which makes it easier to promote to the press and public. Anyway, you can find tips on how to promote your event here. I created that list, and it has all the tips I'd be telling you here :) A geonotice and letting people who edit locally know about it is a good idea.I also suggest you connect with Wikimedia UK (see the last link, you can find them that way) and let them know, they'll help you promote it and can perhaps even provide you swag to give away. Great job at putting things together and I know it's appreciated by many! Thank you and I hope that list helps, again it's everything I'd just be repeating here. :) SarahStierch (talk) 15:59, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for your swift response. I did see that list and am trying to work through it. If you know anyone who'd like to help me at a distance, that would be fantastic. (I know you're busy, but maybe you know of a keen unaffiliated person who wants to do her bit for Adrianne? Or anyone in Britain who, like me, felt a bit ashamed no one here had stepped up?) Specifically, I can't see how to list my event in the sidebar here of London meetups, nor at the Wikipedia:Meetup#Scheduled_future_meetups section. I have not been wiki-active much for the last several years, so there's a lot to get to grips with. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 16:11, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
I'd reach out to local UK Wikimedians such as User:Daria Cybulska (WMUK) and User:Johnbod. I know we're all busy, but, they are locals and also involved in the chapter, they can probably provide the best spread the word boots on the ground insight for getting folks who can attend involved. And if they can't help, I'm sure they totally know the right people locally to ask! SarahStierch (talk) 16:15, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Btw I added to both event pages. For future reference you just click the +/- symbols, click edit, copy and paste other's test and replace it with yours in the correct section. It took me a while to figure it out when I first started, I should probably update the list to say that. SarahStierch (talk) 16:18, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Anyone can edit the Wikimedia UK events page (link at left of their main page to https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Events). You want to do a Geonotice for southern England, and notify the UK email list: "Send Wikimediauk-l mailing list submissions to wikimediauk-l@lists.wikimedia.org ". There is nothing in London on that day but both the weekends before and after have big events on Saturday and Sunday, and I'm having one as well on the 7th, so I don't know I'll come. I'd talk to Jonathan Cardy or Daria at WMUK too. Events like this don't usually go on the meetups page I think. Johnbod (talk) 16:26, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank you both! I can hear the cavalry riding to the rescue. Thank you Sarah for suggesting those names, and adding the event in both places.
Thank you Jon. I've just managed to submit a geonotice request [[1]]; I did it for London but shall change it on your advice. Would you possibly be able to submit the event to the email list? I don't think I'm on it or have ever had anything to do with it. The geonotice text should suffice. Thanks also for pointing out the other London events; I felt somewhat time-constrained on this, and entirely understand that you are unlikely to come. I would really appreciate it if the event could stay on the London meetups page for this week, as a mark of respect to User:Wadewitz. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 16:53, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Same difference for Geonotice - it isn't that precise & everybody up to about Derby sees "London" I believe. You can just email that address for the UK list AFAIK & it will come better from you. I can confirm when I see it. Johnbod (talk) 16:59, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
I have posted it on the UK mailing list and added it to the Wikimedia UK events list. ϢereSpielChequers 17:18, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Oh gosh thank you Ϣere. I have been laboriously composing the mail-list message as Johnbod suggested, and have just sent it off. Better twice than not at all.... Thank you for your help! I do appreciate it. I may come back to you with another question if I may. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 17:48, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Sarah! It has all come together relatively easily. Whether we get many participants is another matter, but at least Wadewitz will not go unhonoured in the country of her dissertation. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 22:43, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

Request for contact address

Sarah, do you know if it would be possible for me to write to Adrianne's parents or partner? I'd like to tell them what her work meant to me, and I have a particular card in mind, that might mean something to them. I'm not asking for their personal address, of course, but perhaps via a church or employer or? Probably best to let me know via email. Thank you. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 14:48, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi User:Carbon Caryatid I don't know his email address, but, I can tell him to contact you (I know him via Facebook). I'll send this along to him! SarahStierch (talk) 16:52, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. Somehow snailmail cards just seem right, even for a digital scholar. Death, the great leveller. I'll be thinking of her, and you, as the editathon begins in an hour! Carbon Caryatid (talk) 07:38, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank YOU for doing this! I passed on your note to him. I'm at WikiConference USA right now and User:Sadads is talking about creating a digital humanities working group on Wikipedia for Wadewitz's legacy. I'm thinking of your event, too! Can't wait to hear how it goes. SarahStierch (talk) 16:28, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
I am going to create a listserv soon, but in the meantime, my presentation about the problems I see the group engaging are at at the conference page and I have created a Google form at here that will help me get an initial sense of who would be interested in helping build Humanities/Wikipedia activities. Also, I am going to start laying out my ideas at Wikipedia:Humanities, and hope to send out more concrete information in the next week or two. Sadads (talk) 19:28, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

Request edit

I'll recycle something I sent to someone else, but the direct answer is {{Request edit}}. See also Category:Requested edits

I was happy to hear the positive feedback to the need to be responsive to the COI editors who are using the request edit template. I do not view the current backlog as a crisis; however, I think our approach could be improved, which will serve us well if the volume of requests grows. My main reason for wanting to get involved is that I support the notion that COI editors should not be directly editing articles. However, if we as a community want to impose that restriction, we have an obligation to be responsive to people who do observe a problem with an article, and want to respect our restrictions. We do have a working process, but I'd like to see if we can improve it, both in terms of the timing of responses and the quality of responses.

As is often the case, a collaborative discussion among interested editors is an effective way to identify ways to improve the process. My first challenge is that there is no easy way to identify the community of editors who are responding. I figured out that I can look at the completed edit templates, and check to see who edited each entry, but that is a time-consuming way to identify contributors. Once identified, there is no central place to discuss issues.

That is in the process of changing. CorporateM started this page, which looks like a great start. I've also reached out to Hasteur to start thinking about how to improve our process. He was very responsive, but I put that on brief hold, partly because of the New York conference.

I plan to pull my thoughts together on how the process should work, but I know it will be better if several people are involved. I'm going to look into creating a WikiTask Force, sort of a lightweight version of a Wikiproject, but we can consider a more formal Wikiproject if that seems appropriate. --S Philbrick(Talk) 19:36, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

Men's vs women's in field hockey

Hi Sarah, I ran into an interesting case at Category:Men's national field hockey teams, see Category talk:Men's national field hockey teams#Mass rename. This is quite a bit of work. Do you happen to know some people who would be willing to help out with this? Multichill (talk) 12:19, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

I have no clue, perhaps someone will see this here and respond. I know that User:Another Believer does a lot of category work, but I'm not sure what his work load is like. This can't be automated? SarahStierch (talk) 15:36, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
Done. I renamed all the articles and create a lot of disambiguation pages. After a bit of template trickery most links now seem to point to the right articles. Multichill (talk) 22:35, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Shuntian Fu. Since you had some involvement with the Shuntian Fu redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. TheChampionMan1234 09:29, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Yalova massacres

Good day. I saw your excellent contributions at Ottoman history. Can you please review this article Yalova Peninsula Massacres (1920–21)? That would be amazing. It is a pretty interesting unknown neglected topic. Thanks. Dunderstrar (talk) 13:15, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

The Teamwork Barnstar
Sarah, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Pride today and for helping to clean up the articles I've started recently by adding Wikidata links, WikiProject parameters and logos. Your help is much appreciated! Another Believer (Talk) 01:22, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello SarahStierch. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "Research paper".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, copy this code: {{subst:Refund/G13|Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Research paper}}, paste it in the edit box at this link, click "Save page", and an administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. JMHamo (talk) 10:08, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for making ...

... this edit. I still have this idea that someday I'm going to sit down and clean up the article and nominate it for FA again and get it to pass and run on the front page on her birthday (this year actually wouldn't be a bad one, as it would be her 65th). But I do so much more now than I did back in 2006 when I wrote the basics of the article that I can barely keep up with all the newsy tidbits well-meaning editors add. You, OTOH, added something that was worth mentioning. Daniel Case (talk) 22:11, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

massacres

Hi sarah - thanks for your input. I would appreciate it greatly if you would take time to read the inclusion criteria of the category, and the sources that are provided on the talk page, which detail that reliable sources specifically study this sort of sex-selective massacres (of both men, and women). You're a valued editor and I value your opinion, but your !vote suggests to me that you didn't review those materials in advance, and it would be a great favor to me if you would consider doing so (Bearcat, for example, has moved his vote to "no opinion" pending review of the same materials). Best, --Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 19:47, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi, Sarah. In May 2013 you approved this article for publication. It still has the "multiple issues" heading. Since then it has been totally revamped in all respects, and I feel that this no longer applies. May I delete that intro now? Aldercraft (talk) 20:27, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
