Good luck and happy editing. From my observation, the biggest problem that new editors have is they want to drive in the fast lanes right away. They don't even have a learners permit but all they see is the road ahead and the gas pedal. They are bound to crash. So much depends on our early travels. Inevitably, you will run across an intolerant editor. The place is full of them. Just don't let their bites be fatal....or let them waste your time. Be careful of what you say. Consider it from many angles. WE (Wikipedia Editors) Editors often mis-read and misconstrue what we say to each other. When in doubt, step back and take a break. --Buster Seven Talk 15:57, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

He does seem just as supportive and friendly, you're right. His page User:Zaereth/Writing tips for the non-writer looks particularly helpful and must have taken a lot of time and effort. You guys are just great, end of story. Wateresque (talk) 16:26, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see you have started to edit and to locate vandalism. Well done. Vandalism is a scourge that effects our reliability in the marketplace of ideas. Good luck and drop in to my talk anytime. --Buster Seven Talk 15:13, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, Wateresque!
As we all sit down at the dinner table and say our thanks, I would like to give thanks to you for your wonderful contributions and wish you a very happy Thanksgiving. May your turkey, ham or beast of choice satiate you until next year! TRA! ```Buster Seven Talk 14:08, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
I want to thank you for your recent kind words. You have raised my spirits immensely. In my early days I too wandered the back pages and editors archives and such...just reading and following links and realized what a wonderful place WP was/is. Of course, I also came across some harmful and hurtful situations. I felt an allegiance to the new editor that was being bullied by so-called veteran editors. I imagined a corps of knowledgeable users that would come to the aid of an editor in need of a friendly voice. I even started a project with the intent of making my imaginings a web-reality. Check out User:Buster7/Wikiknights. There were 3 of us. One was banned until he apologizes for something unrelated to the knights. He was the best editor I have ever known. That was 2 years ago. The other fell prey to the negativity and perplexing behavior of certain administrators. He retired about a year ago...but has e-mailed me that he would be back soon and be creating a new account. For now, I'm just a lone knight that wanders around looking for trouble (among other busy work). When I find it, I do my best to end it.
I have limited experience with Facebook and Twitter. I read blogs but rarely interject. Wikipedia and the Society of Editors is one of the most unique creations in the history of Mankind (Womankind, too). That's why I spend most of my computer time here. Stay in touch. TRA! ```Buster Seven Talk 08:32, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Buster. I hope your holidays were happy! I can tell you that I'm improving my understanding of my role here, thanks in no small part to users like you. As I mentioned before, I'm perhaps too cautious to get involved in the "important" stuff too quickly (the expression around here of being bold is one I'm trying to take to heart.) Meanwhile, I've been honing my vandal fighting skills using the recent change list.
Though I do a lot of conflict avoidance in my real life, I admire your ability to get involved in disputes and promote civility. It's just refreshing. Your Wikiknights are a great example of the kind of community support that Wikipedia needs. Wateresque (talk) 14:13, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I use the recent change list to find redlinked talks and then I welcome them...about 20 per day is my personal challenge. I also try to do some article editing by scanning via "Random Articles". Every day. Otherwise, I would get too caught up on the myriad of talk pages that I watch and start to "sour" my pleasure. Keep it Fun! ```Buster Seven Talk 14:42, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
BTW (By The Way)....Check out User:Writegeist if you havent already. He is my Best WikiFriend. We go way back to the earliest days of the Sarah Palin talk pages. Tell him B7 asked you to drop by and "sit a spell". He has really comfy sofas and a friendly cat, TRA! ```Buster Seven Talk 20:14, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Copy Editing

[edit]

As my experience here grows, I'm learning to edit with more assertiveness. Right now, the thing that's holding me back is that I haven't found the best way to search for and find source info. Wikisource looks promising, so I plan on looking into that. In the meanwhile though, I've found another way I can contribute to article space besides just fighting vandals.

I've joined the Guild of Copy Editors!

It's wonderful. I can go around improving articles using only my brains (i.e. my understanding of good grammar, spelling, and writing). Additionally, while reading about comma misuse, I was surprised to find that the US Postal Service actually recommends writing addresses without any punctuation. Well I'll be... guess I've been messing that one up for over 20 years. Wateresque (talk) 17:24, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Now I don't know what's going on. If you expand their little picture to see an example address, you see that they've placed a period after 'Blvd.' and a comma between the city and state! How do they expect anyone to know how to send any mail when they can't even provide consistant instructions! Wateresque (talk) 17:32, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

Thanks for the compliment! Glad to know that people appreciate some of the things I've written around here. I'm looking forward to seeing what you get up to around Wikipedia and WP:SE! DRN organisers

[edit]

Hello. I am just letting you know that I've made a proposal to create a rotating DRN organiser-style role that would help with the day-to-day running of DRN. As you are a listed volunteer at DRN, I'd appreciate your thoughts on this, and the other open proposals at DRN. You can read more about it here. Thanks! DRN needs your help!

[edit]

Hi there. I've noticed it's been a while since you've been active at DRN, and we could really use your help! DRN is going to undergo some changes soon, so it'd really be great if our backlog is cleared before the start of August and we have as many people on board to help with the changes (they include a move to subpages and the creation of a rotating "co-ordinator" role to help manage things day-to-day. Hope to see you soon! Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 11:42, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The new face of DRN: Wateresque

[edit]

Recently the Dispute Resolution Noticeboard underwent some changes in how it operates. Part of the change involved a new list of volunteers with a bit of information about the people behind the names.

You are listed as a volunteer at DRN currently, to update your profile is simple, just click here. Thanks, Cabe6403(TalkSign) 17:27, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your involvement with DRN

[edit]

Hi there, I noticed that you haven't been as active at DRN as you was before. DRN has been a bit backlogged lately and we could use some extra hands. We have updated our volunteer list to a new format, Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Volunteers (your name is still there under the old format if you haven't updated it) and are looking into ways to make DRN more effective and more rewarding for volunteers (your input is appreciated!). If you don't have much time to volunteer at the moment, that's fine too, just move your name to the inactive list (you're free to add yourself back to active at any time). Hope to see you again soon :) Steven Zhang (talk) 13:39, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

DRN needs assistance

[edit]

You are receiving this message because you have listed yourself as a volunteer at the Dispute Resolution Noticeboard.

We have a backlog of cases there which need volunteer attention. If you have time available, please take one or more of these cases.

If you do not intend to take cases or help with the administration of DRN on a regular basis, or if you do not wish to receive further notices of this nature, please remove your username from the volunteer list. If you later decide to resume activities at DRN you may relist your name at that time.

Best regards, TransporterMan 15:52, 8 January 2015 (UTC) (current DRN coordinator)

Help needed at DRN

[edit]

You are receiving this message because you are signed up as a volunteer at the Dispute Resolution Noticeboard. We have a number of pending requests which need a volunteer to address them. Unless you are an inexperienced volunteer who is currently just watching DRN to learn our processes, please take a case. If you do not see yourself taking cases in the foreseeable future, please remove yourself from the volunteer list so that we can have a better idea of the size of our pool of volunteers; if you do see yourself taking cases, please watchlist the DRN page and keep an eye out to see if there are cases which are ready for a volunteer. We have recently had to refuse a number of cases because they were listed for days with no volunteer willing to take them, despite there being almost 150 volunteers listed on the volunteer page. DRN help needed and volunteer roll call

[edit]

You are receiving this message because you have listed yourself on the list of volunteers at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Volunteering#List of the DRN volunteers.

First, assistance is needed at DRN. We have recently closed a number of cases without any services being provided for lack of a volunteer willing to take the case. There are at least three cases awaiting a volunteer at this moment. Please consider taking one.

Second, this is a volunteer roll call. If you remain interested in helping at DRN and are willing to actively do so by taking at least one case (and seeing it through) or helping with administrative matters at least once per calendar month, please add your name to this roll call list. Individuals currently on the principal volunteer list who do not add their name on the roll call list will be removed from the principal volunteer list after June 30, 2016 unless the DRN Coordinator chooses to retain their name for the best interest of DRN or the encyclopedia. Individuals whose names are removed after June 30, 2016, should feel free to re-add their names to the principal volunteer list, but are respectfully requested not to do so unless they are willing to take part at DRN at least one time per month as noted above. No one is going to be monitoring to see if you live up to that commitment, but we respectfully ask that you either live up to it or remove your name from the principal volunteer list.
