[edit]New article query
[edit]Hi,
I would like to contribute by writing an Article about a company I worked in right now. May I be assisted on how to get started to write an article?
Thank you for the help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clara Jeaniver (talk • contribs) 02:04, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Clara Jeaniver Please read this guide to writing a new article. Please note also that if you still have any connection with this company, you have a "conflict of interest" and would be discouraged from writing such an article yourself: Noyster (talk), 09:27, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
Translating a non-English language footnote: Xiaochang County
[edit]Hello! I would like to 1) ask about my footnote format at Xiaochang County. Basically what I do is find two or three sources that list the administrative divisions of a region in China, and then I add the pinyin and simplified Chinese characters for those administrative divisions to the region's page. Is my methodology kosher? Is the overall result in line with wikipedia standards? 2) Secondly, I recently discovered "|trans-title=" (giving you the option to translate the title of a non-English language work) and I was wondering- why is there no "|trans-quote="? How would I go about adding a "|trans-quote=" (quotation translation) or "|trans-publisher=" etc, etc to the wikipedia footnoting format? Thanks for any general or specific assistance. Geographyinitiative (talk) 04:27, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking, Geographyinitiative. This is just my view but there seems to be a lot of Chinese in this English-Wikipedia article. The references are lengthy with their strings of Chinese characters and numerals, and if these are likely to be significantly useful to readers I think the information could be incorporated in the article in the form of a table, with explanatory column headings in English. The references could then be a lot shorter and I would like to see Refs 1 & 2 giving an English name for the source and publisher.
- Your suggestion to add
trans-quote
andtrans-publisher
parameters to the citation templates could be raised at Wikipedia talk:Citation templates: Noyster (talk), 10:02, 10 April 2018 (UTC) - Simplified Chinese is not a language so
|language=Simplified Chinese
is a misuse of that parameter. |quote=
should never have been made part of the cs1|2 templates. If quotation text from a source is important enough to be included in an article, the text should be placed within<blockquote>...</blockquote>
markup in the article body and cited, or the text should be placed in its own end note ({{efn}}
, for example) and cited. Either of these methods will allow you to include transcriptions in a neat and orderly fashion.- Further, language markup should use the
{{lang}}
template:{{lang|zh-Hant|孝昌縣}}
→ 孝昌縣{{lang|zh-Hans|孝昌县}}
→ 孝昌县{{lang|zh-Latn-pinyin|Xiàochāng Xiàn}}
→ Xiàochāng Xiàn
- The purpose of that markup is to help browsers and screen readers correctly render and speak the non-English text.

2017-18 NBA Standings
[edit]The Bulls and Nets played there 81st game last night can you fix it please. 2600:8803:7A00:976A:E1AF:3DDD:F066:E4B2 (talk) 12:51, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- This is "the encyclopedia anyone can [= may] edit." If you're so concerned that certain articles are kept so completely up-to-date, why don't you learn to do it yourself instead of nagging other volunteers with less interest than you to do it for you? Kindly note that Wikipedia has no deadline and is not a news service. You haven't even courtesy-linked the appropriate article (I notice there is no article with the exact title you have used) as a clue for anyone who does want to help. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.218.14.51 (talk) 16:49, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
I Don't Know How To Change The Number of games that the bulls and nets played in the Eastern Conference from 80 to 81 can you help me Please. 2600:8803:7A00:976A:E1AF:3DDD:F066:E4B2 (talk) 20:30, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- You still haven't linked or named the article. Always do that for a page you want help with. The edit notice at top of the edit window asks for it. I guess it's 2017–18 NBA season but we really shouldn't have to search for it. The article doesn't contain the word standings so it doesn't show up in a search for 2017-18 NBA Standings. It gets the standings from Template:2017–18 NBA East standings. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:56, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
Category alphabetizing--something gone wrong?
[edit]I recently created a category, and I'm in the process of populating it. And all of a sudden, it's alphabetizing things wrong.
The category is Elachista. I set it up as a new subcategory of another category, so now I'm moving articles. There will be close to 700 when it's finished; I've moved about 500 of them. And they're all getting Sortkeys, so the whole category won't be under one letter of the alphabet.
A couple of days ago, all of a sudden, the sorting went funny. Generally, entries I would move would start going to the end of their respective letters, instead of filing alphabetically among the entries already there. And in one case, G, the entry I moved started a whole new G section, apart from the G's that were already there, and coming right after H.
And I also found that when I try to page through the category, that works funny, too. I go to the last page, and it is missing quite a few entries at the beginning. Then when I page back, I see those missing pages (I think) on the earlier page--but going back to the first page does not get me to the beginning of the category. I have to leave the page and come back to it for that.
I've moved literally thousands of entries into other categories. And I've also rearranged thousands of existing categories by providing Sortkeys. So I'm sure I'm doing it right. And I've gone back and double checked; I've done it all the same way both before and after this glitch started. Does someone know what's going on? Uporządnicki (talk) 16:04, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Here is the category for those looking into this Category:Elachista. MarnetteD|Talk 16:11, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- @AzseicsoK: Software affecting category sorting is being updated. Sorting is expected to be wacky for around 8 days but be fixed automatically so just wait. See Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Update to ICU Unicode library - category order problems are expected and Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Category sorting. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:17, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, thank you. Maybe I'll wait a bit before doing those last couple of hundred. Uporządnicki (talk) 16:50, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- @AzseicsoK: I meant don't worry and just wait for the problem to fix itself. You don't have to wait with category edits if you know what you are doing when you cannot see the correct sorting. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:59, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, thank you. Maybe I'll wait a bit before doing those last couple of hundred. Uporządnicki (talk) 16:50, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Well, yeah, but I think I'll wait anyway. It's an extended project, moving almost 700 articles. And I like to go back and check myself--see, at least, that as many pages as I've edited have in fact been added to that category page. (It's routine work, but nothing like forgetting a pipe--thus creating a dead link, which I might or might not notice as I'm flying through.) At the moment, one that I did recently just refuses to appear at all. Uporządnicki (talk) 01:07, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
Looking for help of Korean Speaker
[edit]It's been suggested at a recent AFD on an economics award that it might be helpful for someone to find Korean-language sources on the subject. In situations like these, is there some category tag that can be applied, or noticeboard to post to that would help find someone? Is such a process typically done for AFD debates? Thanks MarginalCost (talk) 17:18, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Sure MarginalCost, a process known as deletion sorting brings deletion discussions to the attention of relevant WikiProjects. Thus I have added the discussion you mention to the "list of Korea-related deletion discussions" as you will see in small print on the AFD page. As a result, soon it will pop up under "Article alerts" on the WikiProject Korea page. For added attention you could post to the talk page of that project. (Note that the South Korea project does not appear to be so active): Noyster (talk), 19:07, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. I am aware of the deletion sorting process (though will admit to never having thought to add "Korea" in general as distinct from "South Korea"). I was just wondering if there was some mechanism for getting help from the language itself as distinct from the content area. I guess not. Thanks! MarginalCost (talk) 02:41, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

I submitted by sandbox biography 14 days ago and do not see it
[edit]What do I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Agokcen (talk • contribs) 19:09, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Agokcen, Your sandbox is at User:Agokcen/sandbox, There is no article under this name so you don't appear to have submitted anything ?, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 19:14, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) (x2) + computer crash! There's something at User:Agokcen/sandbox. Not sure where Davey was looking but it appears in your contributions. (Link at the top of any page whilst you are logged in). Eagleash (talk) 19:26, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Agokcen This page will guide you through the process of submitting a new page for review to become a Wikipedia article. You are going to need some independent references to published coverage of Altan Gokcen, to verify the information and establish that there is the "notability" we require in the subject of an article. Important to note though, if you are Gokcen you are discouraged from trying to add this article due to your conflict of interest: Noyster (talk), 19:42, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) The sandbox is not ready for submission yet. Please read WP:Referencing for beginners and find some independent WP:Reliable sources to establish notability. It is also helpful to either expand your acronyms or link to appropriate articles. The article needs to be structured with a lead paragraph and maybe some subheadings. Coordinates not available on mobile
[edit]For example, if I go to Mystic, Colorado from the desktop view, I'm able to see and edit the coordinates. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystic,_Colorado. If I switch to mobile, they disappear from the article and the wiki code when I try to edit. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystic,_Colorado. I find in my case I'm more interested in the coordinates on mobile than I am on desktop. Just curious if there was a reason for hiding them? - Scarpy (talk) 22:20, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hello Scarpy. Log onto the desktop site, go to your Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets; scroll down to #
Testing_and_development
and check the box forAdd map popups to coordinates in the mobile website
, press Save. The map symbol should appear on the top left side while mobile-browsing Wikipedia articles that have coordinate details. Hope this helps. Thanks, Lourdes 01:21, 11 April 2018 (UTC)- @@Lourdes: thanks!
Article “Eldred Lee”
[edit]I am Eldred Lee himself and I do not feel comfortable that small personal details about me are on Wikipedia. I tried deleting some details but whoever is managing it is keep reverting it back. Please delete “Academic background and personal life” section from the article. There are many ways to verify/prove that I’m Eldred Lee himself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:18C:4300:85A0:18A9:CF28:6982:9BDD (talk) 23:13, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Note: Editor has been given advice here by an Admin. but has continued to disrupt the page. Eagleash (talk) 23:21, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Note: Editor himself is the individual described by the article like it was said numerous times. This is an invasion of privacy and I do not feel comfortable my detailed information being shared on the web like this. Eagleash if you need verification I will be happy to provide you with it. I thought Wikipedia was supposed to be a safe space where details are edited when necessary, ESPECIALLY when the person who is described on the article is requesting to remove certain details. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:18C:4300:85A0:248F:748E:628:993F (talk) 23:31, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Please follow the advice given to you at Oshwah's talk page. We are unable to assist you but the team at the links provided can do so. Again, continuing to disruptively editing the page wull not help your situation at all. Eagleash (talk) 23:46, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Editor continued to disrupt the page, and is now blocked. Eagleash (talk) 23:59, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Eagleash, they have moved onto IP 129.170.195.64
- Ordinarily, I wouldn't doubt this, but the page states that Eldred Lee is well educated, and this user is unable to follow simple instructions or write in standard English. Natureium (talk) 00:08, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
- I know: there's a request in at RFPP. Eagleash (talk) 00:19, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
- Please do not attempt to edit further. I am refusing to follow your instructions due to the panic attack that I am currently forseeing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.170.195.64 (talk) 00:10, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
Hi IP, what you don't realise is it isn't your page/article. You can't get to say what is on it unless the information is unsourced or violates WP:BLP. While I'm sorry it appears to be affecting you, the information is sourced and can be found by others by a reasonable google search so can appear on Wikipedia as well. NZFC(talk) 00:21, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
- However, at least some of the content that the IP editor objects to is unsourced, and i have tagged it as such. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 00:22, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
