Submitting a business

[edit]

Hello I am Donald Finlayson I own Finlayson Construction I was wondering how do I submit my info to Wikipedia so I am on the map . My job is to help people save on their renovations and builds. There are notability guidelines on what companies can be added. Basically it's companies that people would be in a mainstream paper, Whatever you do don't pay the scammers who say they can get you in wikipedia. There is a whole process that finds it out. Providing advice on local facebook communites etc is far better But good luck Wakelamp d[@-@]b (talk) 06:31, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Coronavirus updates

hi wikipedia how come u ARENT posting your Numbers for the coronavirus in the past 8 days?? are u on vacation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.20.39.215 (talk) 04:43, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not a news service and does not need to be updated immediately. With data relating to the current events, it often takes a while for reliable sources to be published and corroborated and often they undergo minor corrections a couple of days after publication - so for the benefit of a Wikipedia article, it's often much better to have a few days lag for the sake of quality over haste. And yes - people edit Wikipedia in their own time - so I suppose in a sense we are all on vacation. --Paultalk09:28, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Forgot password

[edit]

Wikipedia is not accepting my passwords, even CORRECT passwords. I am User:Rickyrab. I have been locked out of my account and the email that I provided is NOT working. I no longer have access to my old Rutgers email address and need to use a gmail address. How the hell to get back in? WHY IS WIKIPEDIA NOT ACCEPTING MY RESET PASSWORDS OR EMAILING A PASSWORD RESET TO MY GMAIL ADDRESS?????2601:8B:C302:D530:78D1:F676:AAA1:A7B1 (talk) 05:17, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Becuase the account Rickyrab hasn't specified one or it hasn't been confirmed. If it is the latter, you might be able to confirm it using the link in the confirmation email. Othwerwise I am afraid that you will need to register again using a different username (don't forget to specify an email this time). Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 06:59, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Article with a lot of issues - help?

[edit]

I recently stumbled on this article - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaikh_Abdul_Gaffar_Sullia - and I'm a bit lost on what to do. The article has no references, and when I looked up the man in question, I only found sites linking back to here or Commons. I'm not really sure what should be done with an article in this state. Would anyone mind helping me out or at least offering an opinion? Thanks, Gageills (talk) 05:32, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your best response is to propose ot for deletion: see WP:PROD. I have done so for you. Anyone may object to this and remove the prod. If that happens the next step is to take the article to WP:AFD. -Arch dude (talk) 05:54, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know how to create a page about all the extinct canids and was wondering if you could help me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.101.59.60 (talk) 06:02, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

List of canids has tables that all have a column titled "IUCN status and estimated population". It states there are only two that are extinct, so it doesn't appear that a separate page is necessary. Clarityfiend (talk) 07:59, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Such a list already exists at List of canids#Prehistoric canids. BTW Clarityfiend it's a lot more than just two species. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 16:02, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help in publishing an article

[edit]

Hello Good Morning,

Please I since on the 16th January, 2021 I made an article about a footballer to be published here, but till today the article is not active, please help me I don't know what to do, or how to publish my article to be live, so that everybody can view it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ultimaterex1 (talkcontribs) 07:44, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your article is in your sandbox, so Wikipedia has no idea when you're ready to go. Since you're not autoconfirmed yet (<10 edits), you can create a draft to submit for review by pressing the "Article wizard" button at Help:Your first article#Create your draft.

Hi,

My article SUBSÍDIOS PARA A LINGUAGEM AGRÍCOLA DE VERMIOSA has been removed. Since this is my first article I first publish the article with no content and then edited it. Still, it was removed due to having the word test in the content. How can I revert this situation?

And it's not due to a word test in it but rather due to not complying with any policies (Portugal: Este artigo foi proposto para eliminação rápida por não cumprir com alguma política da Wikipédia.).

Can't find a certain script I added to my account

[edit]

Hey all, I recently started editing after a quite long hiatus. Sometime before that hiatus I added a script that forces an edit summary, basically requiring me to click submit two times before registering an edit. I find this to be very annoying now and wish to remove it, but I can't seem to find the script line in my common/vector/global.js pages. Perhaps it is stored somewhere else? I just recently returned so I have no idea where I added the line. Pretty dumb of me but I'd appreciate if someone could help. (Please tag me in replies if possible) WikiPancake 11:31, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@WikiPancake: thats not a script, it is a preference in the editing preferences "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary (or the default undo summary)". Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 11:57, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see the option, thank you! - Bioapp 12:05, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My Page in My Language

Suddenly when I click on Wikipedia and enter a question, the answer appears in another language, not English. Then I have to start over and press English as my language. @Rvanourek: Where do you click on Wikipedia? If you start at https://www.wikipedia.org then try if you can change it to https://en.wikipedia.org or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search. Those links go to the English Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:22, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

editing a semi-protected page

[edit]

I submitted a request for a specific edit on a semi-protected page a couple of days ago. I did not see any change, and again submitted the request. A box came up saying that my first request was answered. But I have clicked on everything at the top of the page, and nothing come up. How do I see what the answer is? Thanks! Karola Friedman — Preceding unsigned comment added by Karolafriedman (talkcontribs) 17:28, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, at the bottom of the Talk:Shlomo Carlebach (musician) page, your request from 1/20 was answered. The response was "Not done. If your request was a simple summary of referenced material already found in the article body, then I would have added it immediately. But the article has nothing about denominational lines, nothing about a movement of Soviet Jews, and nothing about promoting women to leadership positions. So your request is not supported by any citations.". Your request from 1/21 was not answered yet. Does that answer your question? ‡ Єl Cid of Valencia talk 17:49, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to submit a complete rewrite

[edit]

There's a 270 word entry for the architect John Voelcker. It really needs rewriiing and expanding.

I've got a 1700 word complete redraft plus references. Can this be dropped into/over the existing page?

31.48.198.110 (talk) 17:58, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This John Voelcker? It's unprotected so you're able to edit the page without logging in. As long as it's sourced, and not a copyright violation or in contravention of the BLP policy - please be bold and go ahead and make the changes. Seagull123 Φ 18:11, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. However, if you are unsure, or if you have a conflict of interest (WP:COI), please create is as a draft (WP:YFA) and make a big note on the talk page of your draft that it is a complete rewrite to replace an existing article. This will be much easier for all of us if you create an account so we can communicate with you easily on you user page. If you choose to directly replace the article instead. then explain yourself first on its talk page and add a good edit summary, or your effort will probably be reverted, because big unexplained replacements by anonymous editors are often reverted without much scrutiny. -Arch dude (talk) 18:10, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
While seagull is correct that you can simply edit the existing article, completely replacing an article which has been written by eight editors might be viewed as rude if done without discussion. I strongly endorse the suggestion of arch dude to create a draft, then open a discussion on the talk page so that any editor especially those who have contributed to the article can weight in. it might be that your draft is far superior to what exists and easier to drop in as a complete rewrite than piecemeal edit, and if that's the case I suspect the editors will concur, but it's also possible that a different approach will make more sense.--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:55, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

May I please read the deleted essay Wikipedia:Why Santa Really Is Important?

[edit]

I am curious to see what the banned user's opinion was on Santa Claus. Félix An (talk) 17:59, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

PINGing the deleting admin @Mz7. Seagull123 Φ 18:08, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Félix An, in the interest of WP:DENY, I am not willing to provide the content of this deleted page. Sorry about that. Mz7 (talk) 18:20, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Félix An, I won't restore that content here, but it was an amateurish argument that Santa Claus somehow "exists", and I believe the essay was not appropriate for Wikipedia. I speak as a fellow who has worn a Santa Claus suit, even though I am Jewish. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:10, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Now that you mention what it was like, I am glad that the joke essay was gone, because I think that according to WP:NOTCENSORED, Wikipedia should tell the truth that Santa is not real. Félix An (talk) 16:49, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Page for Cox Convention Center

[edit]

I work for ASM Global, the company that manages Cox Convention Center. City of Oklahoma City has entered a new agreement for this public facility, and the name for the venue moving forward is Prairie Surf Studios. It is being closed to public events, and the space is being converted to sound stages and production office for filming. I am looking for a way to change the title page and brief history with this new name change. How can I do that?

Change: Cox Convention Center To: Prairie Surf Studios ASM-OKC (talk) 19:43, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, ASM-OKC. First you need to read Paid editing, and make the mandatory declarations there. Then I think you probably need to change your username (or abandon that one and create a new one) to something that does not appear promotional. Once you have done those, you are welcome to post an edit request on the talk page Talk:Cox Convention Center for the changes you are requesting. Be as specific as possible (eg "change XXX to YYY and remove ZZZ"), and be sure to cite a reliable published source: preferably one independent of ASM, but if you can't find that, cite a non-independent one, and the editor who comes to look at your request will decide whether that is adequate. --ColinFine (talk) 22:46, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Inserting sub-headings into list of enteries

[edit]

Hello,

Let's say I want to create a large list of entries, separated by titles under sub-heading2. How can insert the text under sub-heading while not breaking the list? Here's the problem:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit:

Viverra suspendisse

[edit]
  1. Ullamcorper sit amet risus nullam.
  2. Ullamcorper sit amet risus nullam.
  3. Ullamcorper sit amet risus nullam.

Viverra suspendisse

[edit]
  1. Ullamcorper sit amet risus nullam.
  2. Ullamcorper sit amet risus nullam.
  3. Ullamcorper sit amet risus nullam.

What should I do to continue the list (after the second heading) up to list-number 6?

Thank you, Marino 19:47, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

@Marino: Do not use numbered lists at all unless the numbers are important for some reason. If the numbers are important then you will need to use HTML instead of Wikitext. see MOS:SPECIALLIST. -Arch dude (talk) 20:33, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Changing a birth date

[edit]

Hi, my name is Ryan Brinker. I work for Kansas Lt. Governor David Toland. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Toland)

Lt. Governor Toland has asked that I update his Wikipedia page to reflect his birthdate of 1977 (currently, it shows 1976/1977). My change was denied because it was deemed "non-constructive." I understand there's a conflict of interest issue, but the fact is that Lt. Governor Toland was born in 1977. Is there a way I can make this change?

Thanks, Ryan Brinker — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.201.42.54 (talk) 20:59, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a reliable source that we can use for his birthdate? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:04, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Added talkback link. Mathglot (talk) 21:20, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Birth dates are a sensitive subject, oddly enough. We will require a reference to a reliable published source (see WP:RS), not a primary source like a birth certificate, and not a source associated with the subject. This policy results from much painful experience. -Arch dude (talk) 01:43, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
