Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Bands and musicians
Points of interest related to Musicians on Wikipedia: Category – WikiProject – Alerts – Deletions – Assessment |
This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Bands and musicians. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Bands and musicians|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Bands and musicians. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

As much as it pains me to nominate my electronic rodent brethren (lol) for deletion, I was unable to find any sources other than the one I added yesterday while searching — it also does not provide significant coverage of the subject. Discography directly copied from Draft:Mauro Calderón, which was moved to draft due to having no sources and being promotional/reading like an ad, and later recreated as an article with no improvements (arguably even less of an improvement) as there is nothing about his life at all here. None of the sources here are ones I know to be reliable, and most appear to be small/local coverage. Nothing else here suggests an NBAND pass. One of his albums is already up for a separate AfD as well. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 12:00, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

- No Depression is reliable source. It is a highly respected music magazine. MarySue Twohy is program director at Sirius XM. Folk Dj is a international organization with a radio station It's part of Folk Alliance International. I believe he meets the criteria for having a single on national music chart if you consider Folk Alliance International https://www.folkradio.org/ Currently his new record is currently #24 on this chart. Two of his vidoes for singles were reviewed by Americana Highways, another respectable music publication although they are not listed in this article. The festivals that he won or was finalist are national competitions Lyle Lovett and Nanci Griffith were finalists at Kerrville. Most of the other references such as who he performed with were added to support a statement as being true. I agree it needs to be updated, but I not deleted. Performer Research (talk) 16:38, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- I don't think Folk Alliance International would be considered a valid chart as I would assume it falls under SINGLEVENDOR. No Depression should be reliable and Americana Highways is as far as I know (bit surprised to see neither listed at RSMUSIC), but it's still a bit limited. This could be turned around though. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 18:39, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- It would also help if you could link to the Americana Highways articles and any others you bring up that aren't already present. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 18:53, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

Doesn't meet WP:NMUSIC with no notable discography or chart activity, while their "numerous awards" mentioned in article include only two regional ones. Merge into Murder of Tupac Shakur. Textbook case of WP:BLP1E and a potential violation of WP:BLPCRIME. Most of the text in the article is about the murder and the various theories surrounding the possible perpetrator, not Davis. - Merge as suggested seems like the best way to proceed here. He isn't notable as a "criminal" (he hasn't been tried yet, only arrested), or otherwise, only notable in relation to the Tupac murder. He was arrested and is in jail, pending the trial. Unsure if he might even pass criminal notability if and when he should be found guilty either. Oaktree b (talk) 04:40, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

- Keep : Passes WP:SIGCOV.--Afí-afeti (talk) 00:57, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- You need to explain how it meets WP:SIGCOV; the sources are promotional and bears the subject's quotes like "how I am being motivated by God–Miraboi", etc. Safari ScribeEdits! Talk! 19:29, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
- Delete. The sourcing is kind of ridiculous -- a Commons photo purporting to be an award he received is not a reliable source -- and what in-depth coverage exists appears to be tabloid coverage, which, per WP:SBST is not WP:SIGCOV. Other sources appear to be WP:INTERVIEWs and thus ineligible as primary sources. Even though many sources appear in major Nigerian news outlets, the nature of the coverage limits their use to qualify for WP:GNG and WP:NBIO. No indication that this person is notable per the current sourcing (which is not significant coverage), nor by her association with her husband, nor as a model/artist/musician. - Delete This entire article about a BLP is original research with virtually no citations. The single reliable source I see is The Encyclopedia of Popular Music but this is a tertiary source, not a secondary one. Lacking ANY direct detailing in applied or provided reliable secondary sources, this is not a keep. BusterD (talk) 11:58, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
- Tertiary sources are built from secondary sources and by definition indicate the presence of multiples of them. Since when can we not use encyclopedias to source this encyclopedia? - See WP:PSTS. They're not forbidden but article should be primarily sourced to secondary sources while using primary and tertiary sources sparingly. It's not about the number of sources, but how much of the article's key contents are based on things other than secondary sources. Graywalls (talk) 04:56, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
- That policy (WP:TERTIARY) is largely geared toward guiding people to cite original research over things like first-year summary textbooks. It doesn't address notability, because tertiary sources do establish notability if they are reliable, and the cited source certainly passes WP:RSTERTIARY. Chubbles (talk) 05:27, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
- Cleverly ignoring my first point that this was an OR BLP with no reliable secondary sources, yes, I'll concede we occasionally use tertiary sources. We don't generally base articles solely on such coverage, however. So you have presented a single encyclopedia as RS. Nothing else? Delete. BusterD (talk) 06:09, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
- That's because people don't write encyclopedia entries, in major (reliable) encyclopedias, without a base of secondary source material from which to draw. In any case, this will seal the deal: he meets WP:MUSIC by having a charting record - he reached #199 on the Billboard 200 in 1969 (as Merryweather & Friends, playing in a band with Steve Miller, Dave Mason, and Charlie Musselwhite) with the album Word of Mouth. My source is The Billboard Albums, 6th edition, p. 697. Chubbles (talk) 06:34, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

She may also meet WP:NACTOR if not WP:MUSIC. Chubbles (talk) 05:31, 15 July 2024 (UTC)- Comment I don't have paid access to newspapers dot com right now (money is tight) but there seems to be a good amount of non-trivial coverage for her on there. "Lynn Carey" singer and "Lynn Carey" actress are the best search terms, it seems. If someone who has access could clip some of those and add them, I think there would be a good case of her meeting the GNG at least for news coverage. GoldenAgeFan1 (talk) 03:10, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

- Keep I looked around other newspaper databases since it doesn't look like anyone is going to look for newspapers dot com articles as I requested and found several articles relating to Carey. I don't know how long the genealogybank links will last since I don't think they have permanent link sharing. Another note: I don't see why people expect to easily find sourcing for people that had a certain degree of fame that predated the internet by quite a number of years (decades in Carey's case). I thought Carey's article was the least likely to survive, but with this much coverage, there might be a good case for keeping all three (and for a whole bunch of trouts to be served to overeager deletionists). - That is not how the English Wikipedia's notability policies works. Regardless, I don't think the sources on the Finnish page demonstrate notability per WP:GNG: one is a press release, three of them are links to music charts, and the last is the band's Facebook page. However, they may qualify through WP:MUSICBIO, criterion 2. ArcticSeeress (talk) 18:25, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

Does not meet WP:GNG, coverage of Pierce in secondary sources is entirely lacking. Editors with access to offline music magazine archives may have better luck finding sources, but the total absence of anything more substantial than an interview or liner notes does not suggest to me that we should presume such coverage exists. As Pierce has worked with several bands, I don't think there is any single redirect target that would be appropriate, and that internal search results thus best serve readers searching for this title. signed, Rosguill talk 17:19, 10 July 2024 (UTC)

I couldn't find convincing evidence they meet WP:NBAND / WP:GNG. They have been with more than one record label, so there are several potential redirect targets, though I am not sure which would be preferable. Could find very little through a Google search; no WP:SIGCOV, only passing mentions. - Comment - I recommend notability discussions for band members Lynn Carey and Neil Merryweather too. Both articles are based on long histories that really happened but were rarely reported upon, and are written like fan biographies. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (TALK|CONTRIBS) 14:48, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
- Delete - They really existed and released a couple of albums, but unfortunately I can find little evidence that they received significant and reliable media coverage during their time. The current citations are for a one-paragraph album review, placeholders with no info in AllMusic, and a brief mention of a song being placed in a movie. They were mentioned occasionally in laundry lists of bands that worked with certain producers or at certain studios ([8], [9]), and a controversial album cover comes up sometimes in books about other controversies ([10]). In the Internet era they have a few bloggy notices of the "lost classic" variety ([11], [12]). Alas, I simply can't find enough reliable info with which to build an encyclopedic and biographical WP article. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (TALK|CONTRIBS) 14:58, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
- Probable Keep, at worst a merge to Neil Merryweather (which should survive these proceedings). The article already cites a short but independent Billboard review from 1972, and they also were covered by Penthouse contemporaneously ([13]) and Ink 19 more recently ([14]). That's enough for this to no longer be about AfD and instead to be about ATD. Chubbles (talk) 05:30, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

- The Penthouse link works here and the snippet view indicates substantial discussion of the band. Ink19 hasn't been subject to a formal discussion at RSMUSIC, but it is a longstanding publication I have used frequently for independent verification. Chubbles (talk) 02:07, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
- Delete I wouldn't count on either of the two merge targets meeting BLP sourcing standards to keep. I've just asserted delete on both; between them there was a single applied reliable source (from an encyclopedia). BusterD (talk) 12:06, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
- I think this argument misunderstands encyclopedias as independent sources; I've noted as much on the Neil Merryweather AfD. Chubbles (talk) 04:42, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
- It was the other page which had the single encyclopedia source (with which you are defending a BLP page with vast sections of unsourced stuff). This article has nothing approaching multiple independent reliable sources which directly detail the subject. Which is our notability standard. Delete. BusterD (talk) 14:43, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
- I think this argument misunderstands encyclopedias as independent sources; I've noted as much on the Neil Merryweather AfD. Chubbles (talk) 04:42, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
- Comment An alert editor found a whale of coverage for Lynn Carey, the lead singer of this band, in old newspapers. Redlinking this title is downright foolish with that new information, and it suggests that people are not digging very hard for information on this fifty-year-old band and its musicians before punching "delete". Chubbles (talk) 04:50, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
- Comment Lynn Carey looks more likely than not to survive its AFD. Deletion of Mama Lion would therefore be a violation of the Wikipedia policy WP:ATD. Mama Lion should be redirected to possibly be WP:HEY'ed at a later date. Note: I chose Carey as a target over Merryweather because she was the "Mama" of the band.
