Jung Yunho (Korean정윤호; Hanja鄭允浩; born February 6, 1986), also known by his stage name U-Know Yunho, is a Korean singer and occasional actor. He is also known as leader of the South Korean boyband TVXQ.

Early life

Jung was born and raised in Gwangju, South Korea. He has a younger sister, Jung Ji-hye. Several members of Jung's family worked in the legal industry and when he was younger he wanted to be a prosecutor.[1] At the age of thirteen he joined SM Entertainment, after winning a dance competition.

He has said he chose his stage name to be U-Know because as the leader of the group, he wants to understand everybody as in "I know you." and "I know that you know that I know you, so you know that I know that we know each other".[2]

Career

Music

Yunho in 2012

In late 2001 when he was fifteen, Jung appeared in label-mate Dana's music video for her song "Diamond" as a rapper and backup dancer.[3]

In 2003, Jung, after years of training, debuted as one of the members of TVXQ, and was appointed leader.

In 2009, for The 2nd Asia Tour Concert 'O', Jung performed his self-composed song "Spokesman". Additionally, Jung was one of the featured rappers in "Heartquake" from Super Junior's third album, Sorry, Sorry.[4] For the Tohoshinki 4th Live Tour 2009: The Secret Code in Tokyo Dome, Jung performed his self-composed song "Checkmate" in Japanese.[5] He later performed the Korean version during "The 3rd Asia Tour Concert - MIROTIC".

In February 2010, during TVXQ's indefinite hiatus, it was announced that Jung would be performing in the Korea leg of the posthumous concert This Is It dedicated to legendary icon Michael Jackson. He trained in Los Angeles and Las Vegas with Genevieve Cleary, Morris Pleasure, and others who worked closely with Jackson in early March. The project was the first joint production between Korea and the U.S.[6] He performed on March 27 and 28 at the War Memorial of Korea, Yongsan-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul.

On April 3, 2010, Avex announced the hiatus of TVXQ's Japanese activities and that it would focus on helping each member with their solo activities.[7]

From August to September 2010, Jung and Max Changmin performed as TVXQ in Seoul, Los Angeles and Shanghai as part of the SMTown Live '10 World Tour.[8] The duo performed a special stage featuring a medley of their previous singles and a new song, "Maximum". Jung performed a demo of "Why" as a solo, and Max performed a still unreleased song "Big Time" as his.

On November 23, 2010, SM Entertainment announced that TVXQ would be returning as a duo consisting of U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin in early 2011.[9] On November 24, 2010, Avex Entertainment, as well as SM Entertainment Japan, released a statement regarding the renewal of SM artists' contracts with Avex, including TVXQ who would continue as a duo under Avex Trax.[10]

For TVXQ's fifth Korean album Keep Your Head Down Jung had his own solo "Honey Funny Bunny", and later performed a Japanese version with a new rap addition for Tohoshinki's fifth Japanese tour, Tohoshinki Live Tour 2012 ~ TONE.

Composing

Jung performed his self-composed song "Spokesman" in 2009 for The 2nd Asia Tour Concert 'O'. Jung composed another song "Checkmate" in Japanese, which he also choreographed, and performed it during Tohoshinki 4th Live Tour 2009: The Secret Code in Tokyo Dome.[11] He later performed the Korean version during "The 3rd Asia Tour Concert - MIROTIC". Jung has recently expressed his wanting to release more of his own compositions in the future.

Acting

In 2005 and 2006 Jung appeared with TVXQ on their mini-drama series "Banjun Theater". He appeared again in another TVXQ mini-drama series "Vacation" in episode one "Cassiopeia" with Go Eun Ah and Woo Kyung Ah.[12][13] Jung made a guest appearance on episodes 62 and 64 of Nonstop in 2006.

In 2009 Jung was cast as the lead, Cha Bong Gon, in the MBC drama "Heading to the Ground" with labelmate Go Ara. The drama ran for 16 episodes.[14][15]

Jung was cast in June 2010 to share the lead role Prince Shin in the musical remake of "Goong". Tickets for Yunho's perforances sold out within less than two minutes.[16]The musical, produced by Group Eight, opened at the Seoul National Museum’s theater on September 8th. In September 2010, he starred in the Korea tourism promotional movie "Haru: An Unforgettable Day in Korea" as an action movie star. Jung also starred in "Chorus City" a film featured at the Republic of Korea Pavilion at EXPO 2010 Shanghai China with child actress Jun Min Seo and other artists.

Late 2010 Jung was cast in a supporting role in the drama Poseidon.[17] He began filming in November and pictures of him filming and on set were released.[18] In February 2011 it was dropped by SBS citing weather conditions, cast members dropping out, filming setbacks, and numerous postponements.[19][20] "Poseidon" was then picked up by KBS in June, recasting the lead roles.[21][22] Due to his busy schedule overseas, Jung was unable to rejoin "Poseidon", but it was revealed in August that Jung would be making a guest appearance as Kang Eun Chul, a competitive rival to Choi Siwon's character.[23] His appearance in the series concluded after four episodes.[24]

In late November 2011, a teaser trailer of "I Live in Cheongdam-dong" showed Jung making a cameo in the sitcom. He cameoed in the first episode as himself, refusing to pay for a late manhwa bill, a play on Jung once in real-life being kicked out of a manhwa shop for forgetting to pay is overdue bills.[25]

In 2012, Jung, along with bandmate Changmin, starred in the SM documentary I AM. The film chronicles TVXQ's and other SM artists milestone to be the first Asian artists to perform at Madison Square Garden and Jung and Changmin's journey to that point, including archival footage, reflection interviews, and rehearsals.

In September 2012, it was announced that Jung had been cast in "Gwanghwamun Sonata" as the young version of the main character, Sang-hoon. The musical, set in the 80s, tells the story of Sang-hoon, a composer during the democratic movement, through another character twenty years before. Sang-hoon loves a woman, Yeo-joo, along with his friend Hyun-woo, but Sang-hoon contains his feelings for her in numerous songs instead of expressing them to her through words unlike Hyun-woo who shows his feelings directly. Because of this Yeo-joo stays by Hyun-woo's side, and Sang-hoon lets go of Yeo-joo and turns back to his songs and lives in loneliness and solitude. Jung performed, in the first Japanese performance of the musical, on November 20 and 21 at Osaka’s Shinkabukiza. Both performances were sold out. In the musical Jung plays the guitar and piano live.[26]

During early December 2012, it was announced that Jung was cast in the SBS drama King of Ambition and would air in January 2013.[27] Jung started filming toward the end of December. The drama premiered on January 14, 2013 and Jung made his first appearance as Baek Do Hoon in episode two.

Personal Life

Besides his native Korean, Jung is fluent in Japanese. Jung graduated from Myongji University in 2011.

Cyanoacrylate Drink Poisoning

While TVXQ was filming a variety show on October 14, 2006, Jung was rushed to the hospital after drinking a beverage, which was laced with super glue, that had been given to him by an anti-fan. His manager quickly instructed him to vomit right afterward.[28] The anti-fan turned herself in the next day. The female suspect, whose surname is Ko, was apprehended on October 16, was a member of an anti-TVXQ website for over two years. Jung was hospitalized for a few days.

Jung, who has a younger sister the same age as the culprit, contacted the police and requested that they not press charges against Ko in spite of the potentially severe consequences of what she did. He mentioned on a television show a while after he had recovered that the entire event "affected [him] more mentally than physically".[29][30] Circumstances were unclear as to how the culprit managed to enter the building of the broadcasting station.[31]
