Sri Lanka pages

[edit]

Hello and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. Two things :

  • 1) Please try and wikify pages as to make it easier for subsequent editors.
  • 2) you have added numerous pages sourced as "This page incorporates content from Dr. Rohan Hettiarachchi's ". Could you please elaborate further on your permission to copy text from that page to Wikipedia ? Travelbird 14:26, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

REPLY :-

I have contacted the admin of the site and he has granted me permission. I further attach my email :-

Please feel free to use any information on this site, Good luck, Rohan Hettiarachchi

> > Dear Sir/Madam > > I want to know whether the information provided in www.lankalibrary.com > can be freely used, i.e - in an entry in www.wikipedia.org , i would like > to know the copy right status of the information supplied. > Thank You.

Thank you for your reply. Please add something like "used with permisson of website owner" to your source notes, so that other editors may see that your use is legitimate. Travelbird

That's fine, but you are just cutting and pasting. Someone reading that article would have no idea where these statues are (in fact, you call Sri Lanka by the old name Ceyleon) and are not formatted at all. Please read the guide to wiki standards. Czolgolz 15:00, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If this is only going to be a collection of links elsewhere, this would be better as a category. Grandmasterka 06:11, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blanking

[edit]

Please do not replace Wikipedia pages with blank content, as you did to Ruhuna. Blank pages are harmful to Wikipedia because they have a tendency to confuse readers. If it is a duplicate article, please redirect it to an appropriate existing page. If the page has been vandalised, please revert it to the last legitimate version. If you feel that the content of a page is inappropriate, please edit the page and replace it with appropriate content. If you believe there is no hope for the page, please see the deletion policy for how to proceed. Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia! --Zoz (t) 09:21, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributions

[edit]

Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia once again. I've been looking through your edits and have a couple of words of advice for you to stop your edits being reverted or having templates such as {{context}} or {{wikify}} being added.

Firstly, you should make yourself familiar with the Manual of Style (MOS) that describes how pages should be formatted etc.

Secondly, it's always a good idea to act on templates that are added to your articles, rather than just removing them. The articles you are writing are very valuable to the community but in general, to the reader who is not very familiar with Sri Lankan architecture and sculptures and history, they require a certain amount of context.

If you'd like to talk more about any of this then don't hesitate to get in touch on my talk page. Budgiekiller 09:43, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Again, thank you for your numerous contributions. Could I gently remind you that writing an article for Wikipedia requires you to keep an eye on the Manual of Style (MOS), rather than just creating articles by copying and pasting text in. Other users will add {{context}} or {{wikify}} to each of your contributions until you provide the reader with an article with some context and whose style is in-line with the MOS. A couple of general points:
  1. You could add a {{stub}} template to the very short articles you write about the various stupa so that other authors would be encouraged to contribute to it.
  2. You could add some category tags (which I've seen you've just started to do) to your articles - this certainly makes them more useful, easier to locate and group etc.

Thanks again for all your hard work, just a bit more time spent on the basics I've outlined will make your contributions first class! If you'd like to discuss any of this, please don't hesitate to get in touch. Budgiekiller 09:54, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don't forget to add categories and stubs to your work!! Budgiekiller 11:15, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Proto History of Sri Lanka, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. This article appears to be a direct copy from http://www.lankalibrary.com/geo/dera1.html. As a copyright violation, Proto History of Sri Lanka appears to qualify for speedy deletion under the speedy deletion criteria. Proto History of Sri Lanka has been tagged for deletion, and may have been deleted by the time you see this message. If the source is a credible one, please consider rewriting the content and citing the source.

If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GFDL, you can comment to that effect on Talk:Proto History of Sri Lanka. If the article has already been deleted, but you have a proper release, you can reenter the content at Proto History of Sri Lanka, after describing the release on the talk page. However, you may want to consider rewriting the content in your own words. Thank you, and please feel free to continue contributing to Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Esprit15d (talkcontribs)

Category

[edit]

Hey, I see that you're adding categories and stubs to all your fine work. Just thought I should point out that there already exists a category specifically for the history of Sri Lanka, that is Category:History of Sri Lanka. I've created another one (your one), i.e. Category:Sri Lanka History, to remove the red links, but having checked out the naming conventions, I discovered that it was the wrong thing to do.

I'll try to go through your pages and re-cat them using the correct category, and put Category:Sri Lanka History up for deletion. Perhaps you can help, or at least when using the category in the future, use the one that already exists. Hope you understand everything I've tried to explain! Keep up the good work, if you want to talk it over, get in touch on my talk page. Budgiekiller 20:17, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, even better and more specific to some of your work is the category Category:Archaeological sites in Sri Lanka. I'll leave it to you to decide! Budgiekiller 20:20, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've recommended your category for deletion, here but only after the pages tagged with it are modified to the Category:History of Sri Lanka. Hope you understand! Budgiekiller 20:27, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyrighted text on Sri Lanka pages

[edit]

Ela112, before you post copyrighted text used with permission on Wikipedia, you must first forward that permission to permissions AT wikimedia.org. You may also ask the website owner to send an email himself, stating that he/she licenses his texts under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). Alternatively, you can just ask the owner to include a statement on his web site saying that the texts are licensed under the terms of the GFDL. Until such a declaration has been made, the text is still copyright violation. Thank you. SCHZMO 20:43, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Permission had been granted to this website

[edit]

i was going through the article discussion for Mihintale and also found that "Permission has been received from the copyright holder to license this material under the GNU Free Documentation License, and evidence of this has been lodged with the Wikimedia PR department "

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Mihintale

I see there is justification for that website and I have removed the copyvio notices on pages that were taken only from that website, but part of Irrigation Works of Ancient Sri Lanka was copied from [1] (section 3.1), which is copyrighted, so I cannot remove the copyvio for that page. SCHZMO 02:00, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but I don't think that permission is sufficient. The owner must agree to license his material under the terms specifically in the GNU Free Documentation License. Please feel free to use any information on this site is not nearly the same as I agree to license this material under GFDL. See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for the specific steps on how to request and confirm copyright permission. SCHZMO 10:22, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Categories and subcategories

[edit]

Hey, thanks for your recent communication on my talk page, glad to know that I'm not talking to myself all the time!! I hope that the advice I've given has been helpful and that you will be able to apply it to your future edits.

I have noticed one or two last possible issues with some of your pages, one of which is adding pages to a category and to one of that category's subcategories. Now, there is a guide to this here which says that under certain circumstances, it's allowable within the style of Wikipedia. An example where I'm concerned is Thuparamaya which you have categorised under both Category:Stupas in Anuradhapura and Category:Stupas in Sri Lanka. I would have thought that the first category is a subcategory of the second, so you would only need to tag it as Category:Stupas in Anuradhapura. However, I'm no expert in the history, nor the geography of Sri Lanka and its stupas so I'm more than happy to be corrected!!

Secondly, Vessagiri, for example, is currently in Category:Ancient Constructions of Sri Lanka which will probably need to be renamed Category:Ancient constructions of Sri Lanka - minor, but I expect it'll happen, just to make you aware. Once renamed, you could add an appropriate supercategory (e.g. Category:History of Sri Lanka to it, and then make sure you don't have cats and sub-cats on the same page!

Confused?! I am! Anyway, once more, I hope this is helpful. If you'd like to discuss things further then I'd be more than happy to do so on my talk page! All the best, Budgiekiller 09:57, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I'll try again. Say you had an article about a Volkswagen Beetle. Now you can easily tag this as a Car or as a Volkswagen model. Tagging as both is a waste of time because the category of Volkswagen model would be a subcategory of Car. You would only want it to appear in the lowest sub-category available. Any clearer?! Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Dighavapi Raja Maha Vihara, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Dighavapi Raja Maha Vihara seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Dighavapi Raja Maha Vihara, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 20:28, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:IMG 3512.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:IMG 3512.JPG. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Alpha_Quadrant (talk) 23:50, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hi, Thank you, for uploading this file.

However, as part of ongoing efforts to ensure all media on English Wikipedia is correctly licensed and attributed it would be appreciated if you were able to confirm some details,

If it's your own work, please include {{own}}, amend the {{information}} added by a third party, and change the license to an appropriate "self" variant. You can also add |claimed=yes to the {{media by uploader}} or {{presumed_self}} tag if it is present to indicate that you've acknowledged the image, and license shown (and updated the {{information}} where appropriate).

If it's not your own work please provide as much sourcing/authorship information as you are able to.

It would also be appreciated if you could "claim" or update the source and licensing on other media you uploaded, You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

This will assist those reviewing the many many "free" images on commons that have not yet been transferred to Commons. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:18, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Sri Lanka drums requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://liy0005.wixsite.com/sri-lankan-culture/emotional, https://www.angampora.com/rituals/, and https://writebetter.io/examples/the+other+side+is/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Lions Paws.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next seven days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
