The Bradenton Florida State League team is a minor league baseball team based in Bradenton, Florida. Home games are played at McKechnie Field which also serves as the Pittsburgh Pirates spring training facility. The team nickname will be revealed at a Novomber 11, 2009 press conference in Bradenton.

The team, which plays in the Florida State League, will the High-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates major-league club beginning in 2010.

[edit] Previous franchise history

Before 2009, the team was known as the Sarasota Reds, being affiliated with the Cincinnati Reds and playing at Ed Smith Stadium, which was the spring-training home of the Reds. Before that (from 1994 until 2004) the team was known as the Sarasota Red Sox and affiliated with the Boston Red Sox, and had Kevin Youkilis play for them in 2002. Before that (1997 to at least 1987) they were affiliated with the Chicago White Sox, and were thus known as the Sarasota White Sox. For several years they played in Sarasota's Payne Park up until the construction of Ed Smith stadium.

After the Reds' spring-training departure from the Grapefruit League to the Cactus League, the Reds and Pirates did an "affiliate-swap." In return for the Sarasota Reds becoming a renamed Pirates Bradenton affiliate, the Reds have now become the parent club of the Pirates' former High-A affiliate, the Lynchburg Hillcats of the Carolina League.

[edit] Roster

The 2009 season is over. Minor-league clubs do not maintain rosters during the offseason. A new roster will be assigned by the parent club during 2010 spring training.
