The R179 is a planned New York City Subway car. It may be 75 feet long despite the fact the MTA has stated after the procurement of the R68's that there will be no more 75 foot cars due to system constraints. The base contract of 208 cars will begin to replace the R44 fleet and possibly continuing on to the R46 fleet, and may replace any remaining cars from prior orders, such as the R32, R38, R40, R40M, and R42, in the event that they are not fully replaced by the R160 fleet. The R179 is scheduled to be ordered in 2009 and delivered by the end of 2013. The base order includes 208 cars. Also the MTA will order 64 additional cars for Staten Island Railway. [1]
As this subway car model is still in the planning stages, it is subject to major changes in design.
