Assertion of notability[edit]

Scooter Braun has over 54,000 followers on Twitter.

http://twitter.com/ScooterBraun

He's no A-list celebrity, or even B-list. However, he has notability as a party promoter, hip-hop record executive, and most recently Justin Bieber's manager and the one who got him signed up with Usher.

That, to me, shows a pattern of continuing importance which is only likely to grow.Ryoung122 00:39, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Charles Potenza edits[edit]

I'm particularly irked by you removing sources and removing text. Others have added a few improvements, but due to your UNconstructive edits I had to revert. Please stop.Ryoung122 05:41, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to add new material, no need to delete older material. Part of biography is showing the person's career trajectory. Perhaps you don't understand that. I'm not saying "my version is better than yours." I'm saying if you want to add new material, you should:

A. make edits separate, so that some changes that are acceptable to others will be incorporated

B. explain your reasons for your edits, especially the ones that are controversial/disputed by others.

C. Engage in dialogue with other editors if you have a dispute.

Twitter not a reliable source?[edit]

In some instances, it is...and in fact, can be used in a court of law. That's why Scooter Braun was arrested. The irony is lost on some people who push policies without considering their proper application.Ryoung122 20:11, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've yet to see a tweet that was a WP:RS-style reliable source. Tweets are primary sources. For the text of a tweet to be a reliable source, in the wikipedia sense of that phrase, it would have to be recounted in a secondary source. We wiki-editors could then incorporate the material from the secondary source, with proper attribution. Let's all try saying this one together: Wikipedia is a tertiary source.
The analogy to what's admissible in court is spectacularly off-the-mark. Lots of stuff is admissible in court. Testimony. Forensic evidence. Phone records. The results of a drug- or bomb-sniffing dog's investigation. But quoting from the court record is the archetype of prohibited original research, regardless of how august the judicial body. It's true that the rules of evidence, whether statutory or common law, address the topic of "reliability." But legal reliability is related to the wikipedia rules regarding reliable sources in no way, shape, or form. The irony of a devout opponent of "wiki-lawyering" defending a tweet as a reliable source because it's admissible in court ought be lost on no one. But I'll bet it is. Improvements[edit]

FYI, I will be making some major improvements to this page over the next week or two. Braun has become a very potent figure in the music business in the past year or so, therefore a lot of new information has come about that wasn't available before. As always please correct any wrong info you find but PLEASE do not come in and mercilessly slash away at the improvements I make. It will be a work in progress. Thank youBped1985 (talk) 03:40, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Please note that since Braun is a living person, any information that is added without a reliable source to back it up, should be and probably will be removed immediately. Other than that, I think you're quite free add material without worrying about other editors. --Atavi (talk) 01:02, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Always! Otherwise it would be just a forum rather than an encyclopedia :). Bped1985 (talk) 04:55, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
To anyone that might know, the talk page suggests that an appropriate infobox be added. I looked over the list of wiki infoboxes but could not find one for a music manager. If someone could point one out to me, or just insert one into the article and I could fill in the details that would be fantastic. Thanks! Bped1985 (talk) 05:02, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Frequent Vandalism, Unsourced Material, Edit Warring[edit]

Due to Scooter Braun's association with Justin Bieber, it seems that this page is frequently vandalized. At this point, it is difficult to sort out the constructive from the unconstructive edits. An experienced editor should review this article for cleanup.Ryoung122 20:17, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Speaking of Bieber, if Braun has to be called "a Jewish-American talent manager", shouldn't Bieber be "a Christian-Canadian pop artist" instead of just "a Canadian pop artist?" Or is that "Jewish-American" thing a bit ridiculous maybe? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.80.174.165 (talk) 12:47, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Braun's parents background has been sufficiently detailed and referenced in the Early life section. If he currently practices any religions, that can be noted in the Personal life section. It does not need to be in the lead. He is not specifically representing Jewish music groups. If anything, what needs cleanup is the Career section, which needs a lot more detail on his management history and style. AngusWOOF (talk) 16:41, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The New Yorker Profile[edit]

This article in The New Yorker could go a long way toward fixing this article. I'll get to it some day, but it's not enormously high on my to-do list. If someone wants to pick up the baton, that'd be great. David in DC (talk) 17:28, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for quoting this very extensive and informative coverage. Information from it has now been incorporated in the article with due reference. werldwayd (talk) 20:21, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Articles about Braun's faith[edit]

I removed the following reference articles which tried to support that he was from a Conservative Jewish family but did not have the word "conservative" anywhere (found a third article instead). These can be added back where there is notable information. -AngusWOOF (talk) 17:48, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and thanks for noticing that, I was actually the one who wrote it after reading a few articles about Braun. They did say he was born to a Conservative Jewish family, I just didn't cite them, my bad. Here are the reliable sources that clearly say this fact: first one and the second one. So I'll now revert you change and add it properly the article. Shalom11111 (talk) 19:07, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Scorpion[edit]

Last night, watching the TV show Scorpion, I noticed that Mr. Braun was listed as an executive producer. That was news to me so a did a google search and found this article from the Washington Post. It seems worth adding to the article in some way, but I'm not sure how. Ideas? David in DC (talk) 16:50, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Changes reverted by User: David in DC[edit]

I have restored my deletion of a paragraph describing a 2010 incident. My first deletion was on the grounds that the deleted material was WP:UNDUE, and I stand by that. However, after the material was restored by David, I looked at the ref itself. In brief, it does not match the paragraph in question, and is, as noted in my summary is in fact, a WP:BLP violation. I have asked that the material not be restored, and if need be, discussed here instead. Thanks. Jusdafax 02:36, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

My recollection is that there used to be at least one more ref in this paragraph. Here are some from a local CBS affiliate, Rolling Stone, Newsday, and Associated Press. I do not recall if these were the ones in the article before, and don't really feel like scouring the history. But these could easily be used to source everything in the language that's now been stricken twice.

As for WP:UNDUE, I think it must be read in light of WP:WELLKNOWN which says

In the case of public figures, there will be a multitude of reliable published sources, and BLPs should simply document what these sources say. If an allegation or incident is noteworthy, relevant, and well documented, it belongs in the article – even if it is negative and the subject dislikes all mention of it. If you cannot find multiple reliable third-party sources documenting the allegation or incident, leave it out.[Emphasis added]

I think the material should be restored, with the refs above added. A mention of the incident, arrest and plea-bargain, in an article of this size, is not unbalanced for the purposes of WP:BLP. Looking up above, I'm reminded that I first came to this article several years ago, because the case had not yet been resolved and the arrest was in the article sourced only to a tweet. I was blasted by a now-banned editor for insisting on better sourcing, so I do come to this matter aware of the BLP issues, we just disagree about what's undue.David in DC (talk) 15:28, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Jusdafax: I think both you and I have laid out our views pretty clearly. But no one else is commenting. I'd like to see what others think. I'm going to post a request for input on the BLP Noticeboard. David in DC (talk) 17:22, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Outdated[edit]

Noticed that Braun's Wikipedia page has not touched upon any of his most recent projects and career points. Scooter Braun was a producer and organizer behind Ariana Grande's One Love Manchester concert benefiting the 22 killed at her concern in May 2016, which raised over $324K [1]. He also produced and organized Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief, which brought together over 30 A-list celebrities in a televised telethon to raise money for Hurricane Maria, Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma victims[2]. His more recent endeavors range under philanthropic production and events, rather than just being Bieber's talent manager. Would like to move forward with making these edits on the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daryazal (talkcontribs) 17:13, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging CityOfSilver as involved in the discussion. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 14:48, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The Hand in Hand one might be worth a sentence, since the Billboard article and video credits Braun for organizing that. It just needs to be phrased in a way that doesn't sound promotional or peacock. Like: In 2017, Braun and rapper Bun B organized Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief, a one-hour television special telethon special to raise money for the victims of Harvey and Irma. (billboard ref above)[3] As for One Love Manchester, that was part of Grande's narrative and could be placed there, but also weighed not as much since that's within his normal activities as a manager/producer . AngusWOOF (barksniff) 14:48, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Daryazal and AngusWOOF: "Noticed that Braun's Wikipedia page has not touched upon any of his most recent projects and career points." I would have a problem with this if the article failed to mention that he'd started managing a famous musical act or did something else notable. I still believe these edits are plainly done with intent to promote, and it's possible to insert impermissible promotional edits whether or not there's a conflict of interest. CityOfSilver 17:28, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The details about the fundraisers are already covered by their specific articles, so any statements adding to this should be at a general view as with Bill Gates's article where the more specific projects mostly at Bill Gates Foundation. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 18:15, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Big Machine[edit]

The whole "Taylor" section is clear BLPVIO; WP:SOAP, and Undue Weight. It's so poorly written by a fan of hers with spelling and grammar errors. (Catalogue?). Most of that belongs at Big Machine Records page. Note the target of criticism is Borchetta (owner of Big Machine) and her whole claim is that he (Borchatta) didn't give her a shot at buying the label. It later turns out that's false; but either way while this is tabloid nonsense whether it's on Wikipedia or not it doesn't quite make sense here.

One proposal: Just move the section to Big Machine Records.47.205.73.132 (talk) 17:00, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted the material on Ms. Swift’s social media attacks, and have invited discussion here in the edit summary. Jusdafax (talk) 00:03, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
A User's POV. I know nothing about Scooter Braun except that I've seen his name surfacing many, many times in the press and online in connection with an ongoing row with Taylor Swift (who's making it very public) regarding ownership of her master tapes. I came her to find out more about Braun and left wondering why on earth there isn't any mention of it in the article. There is a link included (40), but no accompanying text. I'm not pro or against either Taylor or Braun but given the dominance of this thing in the media, I'm astonished there's no mention of it here.David T Tokyo (talk) 10:15, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that, especially after the last few days, this page clearly should have coverage of that controversy. When I search for Scooter Braun the top hits across dozens of WP:RS are overwhelmingly about Taylor Swift. The trick is finding the time to make sure any additions to this article about that controversy are well-cited and neutral. - Astrophobe (talk) 23:30, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Shamrock deal[edit]

"Following Ithaca Ventures' acquisition of Big Machine Label Group, Taylor Swift denounced the deal on social media due to Braun's former role as Kanye West's manager during the release of the song Famous, which controversially referenced Swift." For those who know about the backstory or not it seems so much more useful to say that Swift was ripe from the Kanye West song that references her and at the time, Braun was West's manager. These two lines are about Taylor Swift and therefore belong on the Taylor Swift masters controversy page.

Swift posted on Instagram that she would re-record her first six studio albums (Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, and Reputation).[52][53] On April 9, 2021, Swift released Fearless (Taylor's Version), the first of the rerecordings. Raffybund (talk) 01:59, 23 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected edit request on 4 June 2021[edit]

Please change: In 2021 Braun was sued for $200 million by Peter Comisar a former business associate regarding a private equity fund (SCOPE Capital Management) that Braun was involved in launching. Comisar accused Braun of recruiting Comisar to join the newly create private equity fund by promising to raise large amount of money (around $500-750 million) from wealthy friends like David Geffen, who he described as his "godfather", Jimmy Iovine, Haim Saban, the Reuben family, Soros family and Mittal family. Comisar alleges that Braun's promises of his friends investment where not followed through on saying “Not one of Braun’s contacts agreed to invest any amount, much less the hundreds of millions Braun had promised. Braun had to explain to Comisar, tail between his legs, how he had asked David Geffen, his supposed godfather, to invest in SCOPE, only to be told by Geffen that he did not view Braun as someone with whom Geffen would invest. Braun got the same brush-off from Jimmy Iovine, Haim Saban, and the Rueben, Soros and Mittal families — indeed, Braun was rejected by each of his promised close relationship investors. The truth was that Braun’s relations valued him as someone to socialize with, but to whom they would never entrust their millions". The suit alleges that David Bolno, a business manager who was also involved in the fund threatened Comisar by saying "Braun is an expert in the media and would destroy his reputation in a press and litigation process" if Comisar filed suit against Braun. Comisar goes on to allege that Braun and Bolno falsely accused Comisar of racism as a "predicate for his removal" in 2018. Braun later filed suit again Comisar, denying the allegations and asking that the court order the suit into private confidential arbitration rather than a public jury trial which Comisar requested.

Couple of additions[edit]

he is the founder of SB Projects. His main company should be in the lead.

Braun’s grandparents were survivors of Dachau and Auschwitz during the Holocaust [2]

On immigration, the father became a dentist and high-school basketball coach

Missing from career: Braun also signed Ariana Grande to his record label in 2013. She went on to become the most streamed artist in the world. Braun also managed the careers of Psy, Tori Kelly, Carly Rae Jepson, Martin Garrix, Kanye West, Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta, Lil Dicky and others. [3]

At one point, Braun formed the largest music-management company by acquiring half of the management companies of Troy Carter (Lady Gaga), Brandon Creed (Bruno Mars), Morris Higham (Kenny Chesney), Jason Owens’ Sandbox Entertainment (Kacey Musgraves, Little Big Town), and a partnership with Drake his partner Adel “Future the Prince” Nur.

[4]

Braun was the executive producer of The Giver, Burden, Demi Lovato’s Dancing with the Devil, The Boy from Medellin, and Project Runway among other titles.

Dave was the most watched-comedy on FX and went on to become the highest-rated show in FX history [5]

The Big Machine acquisition was financed by The Carlyle Group and several other private equity firms. [6]

In 2020, Ithaca Holdings sold the six-album masters to Shamrock Holdings for $300 million and $450 million, reportedly netting Ithaca a large profit. [7]

The sale of Ithaca made Braun a billionaire.

On May 31, 2022, Braun visited with BTS and US President Joe Biden at the White House to discuss the recent rise in anti-Asian hate crimes.

Swift announced she would re-record her first six studio albums after a series of disputes, including allegations that Big Machine blocked her from using her old material for the American Music Awards in 2019.

In 2021, Braun filed for arbitration in a legal dispute with former associate Peter Comisar, who led a private-equity fund in which Braun had invested.

Braun is known to be a collector of fine art.

In 2017, Braun was an organizer behind “Hand in Hand” a telethon that raised $55 million for relief from Hurricane Harvey and Irma. In 2018, Braun was an organizer behind March for Our Lives in support of gun control legislation. [8]

Removing images[edit]

@Raffybund: Please stop restoring the version of the lead that censors much of information about Braun that has received widespread media coverage. It looks biased. Refusing to mention the Swift controversy in the lead, when it's the single most publicized event of Brain's life in the spotlight, is blatant POV. Please address the disputed neutrality concerns before making edits to the article. ℛonherry 13:39, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Main issue seems to be the images you revert to are 4+ years old each time. Your reversions to old pics and removing stats on other music pages is equally disruptive.Raffybund (talk) 15:38, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You do realize your edits and what you're removing/adding is visible to everybody right? I do not have an issue with the image. The concerns I've raised about is the neutrality of the lead commensurate with the media coverage. Your edit summaries are half baked, like this one, where you state one thing in the edit summary but then do a lot more within the edit itself; you attempted to remove a highly publicized fact from the lead. This is not constructive at all. You are trying to turn Braun's page into his promotional poster by censoring out highly notable details. Please stop doing that. ℛonherry 16:43, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I see what you mean. When we look past your words, it's clear you're looking for a particular implementation of the page. It works on other pages, but BLPs should be written responsibly, cautiously, and in a dispassionate tone, avoiding both understatement and overstatement.

Your edit reads like a blog post that says:

"The purchase of Big Machine Records by Braun and his private equity shareholders in 2019..."

which violates BLP guidelines. The lower sections cover the WP:Event, importantly, without the bias you introduce.

You're well known for adding and removing content that favors Taylor Swift. While I myself and a fan, it's not the place for Wikipedia to be Swiftopedia and narrowly usher your implementation. Because the sentence is not NPOV it is reversed. Raffybund (talk) 17:42, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

And you're well known for being a paid editor and Braun has been reported by media outlets to have been paying individuals/agencies for favorable press. This does not look good. Your claims are frivolous. There is no POV is simply stating "Braun was involved in a XYZ incident" as it does not state who won/lost in the dispute. It simply states Braun purchased a label, which caused a high profile dispute. What is actually POV is you trying to hide it from the lead. This is not a contentious subjective claim/allegation, which BLP advices against. This dispute happened, it's not a dream/novel, it's an objective fact as per BLP. NPOV would be mentioning what Braun or Swift said about this dispute. But that's not in the lead. The lead claims that a dispute happened, a dispute that marked Braun's most publicized moment in his career. You're simply being ignorant and disruptive and biased here. I'm more than ready to take this to the NPOV noticeboard. ℛonherry 11:03, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mostly drivel but that paragraph needs a rewrite to be accurate:
"Claims by Taylor Swift in response to the acquisition of Big Machine Records, the label that owned her masters, by Ithaca Holdings and private equity shareholders in 2019, resulted in a publicized dispute." Raffybund (talk) 06:06, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
