In Statistics Canada's 1991 Census of Population, Canada had a population of 27,296,859, a change of 7.9% from its 1986 population of 25,309,331. With a land area of 9,203,210.48 km2 (3,553,379.43 sq mi), it had a population density of 3.0/km2 (7.7/sq mi) in 1991.[1]

Of the numerous municipalities that existed at the time of the 1991 census, Montreal had the largest population of all municipalities in Canada at 1,017,666, a change of 0.2% from its 1986 population of 1,015,420. Newmarket, ranked as the 100th-largest, had a population of 45,474, a change of 30.2% from its 1986 population of 34,923.

Of the 100 largest municipalities in Canada in 1991, 44 were located within Ontario while 23 were located in Quebec and 17 were located within British Columbia. The remaining 16 were located within Alberta (5), Nova Scotia (4), New Brunswick (3), Saskatchewan (2), Manitoba (1) and Newfoundland and Labrador (1). In terms of municipal status, 55 were cities, 23 were villes, 10 were district municipalities, 8 were towns and 2 were county municipalities. The remaining 2 included a borough and a county.
