These are the articles that had External Links (ELs) added by VAwebteam, but they were reverted by Some Other Editor because they were thought to be a violation of WP:COI ... since there were supposedly "around 40" of them, I've dubbed it the Top 40 list.

We need to check the edit history of each article to find the deleted URL, add it here to create an article:link pair, and then for each proposed pair decide:

  1. Is it appropriate to add, or is it too off-topic?
  2. Should it be used as a citation, or just added to the EL list?
  3. If no place already exists to hang a citation, should something be added for which it can be cited?

Update: VAwebteam has completed the first assignment, so all of the links (turns out to have been more like 60 than 40) have been recovered, and some have been evaluated, and either integrated or rejected ... I've copied the earlier version of this entire page to the talk page as an archive, then removed all of the article:link pairs, and on this page, removed all of the instructions/comments so that we can start fresh with the second phase, "Evaluation & Integration". —72.75.70.147 02:19, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Second assignment for VAwebteam[edit]

The article:link pairs recovered by VAwebteam in the first assignment have the section headers linked to the article; I left them that way for easy identification of the ones that still need to have the templates added ... regardless of whether they will be used as references or just added to an exisiting (or new) External Link(s) section, the explicit ELs need to be replaced with this {{cite web}} boilerplate:

Note: The |work= field is only appropriate where there is a parent directory to the V&A page with a navigation menu for similar sites/pages, e.g., the collections/ directory and its children ... here are some of the more common ones (add more as identified):

  • pantings/ - Paintings & Drawings
  • photography/ - Photography
  • prints_books/ - Prints & Books
  • sculpture/ - Sculpture

Note: The |accessdate= should always be the current date in ISO 8601 format, and it does not have to be changed when the link is integrated into the article ... it just documents that Some Other Editor has verified that the URL is valid, so it doesn't matter if it is off by a few days.

FYI, whenever I encounter a citation that has an access date over a year old, I usually click it to verify that it's still there, and if it has evaporated (as can happen when blogs are used), then I place it inside of <!-- --> comment brackets and, if I don't have the time/inclination to find a replacement citation, I add a {{fact}} tag ... naturally, I note what was done in the edit summary.

I recently added the unofficial Diane Arbus website to the external links of that article. Can someone review whether adding the above exhibition link is appropriate? It is possible that there have been lots of such exhibitions, and adding this one would favour it over others, I don't know for sure. The Great Exhibition ‡[edit]

Comment: This is a link to Well Built Site (WBS) that allows the reader to explore various articles related to A painting of V&A at the opening of the Great Exhibition with about 50 people in it ... you could spend at least a half-hour exploring all the stuff associated with this painting, like who all of these people are.

Conclusion: Do not link ... this painting is worthy of an article of its own, with Wikilinks to other articles, e.g., one of the five lists from the INDEX link is "ROYAL COURT & FOREIGN OFFICIALS":

  3. The Duke of Cambridge - (there are a bunch of them ... which is the one in the painting?)
  4. Princess William of Prussia - (could this be Wilhelmine of Prussia? if so, which of the 3 with articles?)

How many in this list already have articles here? (A redlink might be caused the linked name being incorrect, not because there is not article.) This is the tip of an iceberg upon which someone could spend more that a few hours of work ... it should have its own sandbox for discussion, and maybe create a Project around it, but for now, MOVE ON.

I disagree … since the article is about Zoomorphic style (the alternate title of the subject), an EL to the V&A site about an exhibition devoted to Zoomporphic Architecture does not strike me as being off-topic … if it had been called, "buildings that look like animals" (to quote from the linked page), then maybe you wouldn't have rejected the association? :-) —72.75.70.147 20:06, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Comment: This link is to a site for a currently running exhibition about a living person, and is not very "friendly" to navigate ... unfortunately, because the one of the menu choices is, "Book Tickets," and the most prominent off-page link is an advertisement for Motorola mobile phones, this smells Too Much like spam, so it should not be added at this time (try later, after it has been archived under the V&A collection/fashion/ directory) ... also, as already noted on the article by the {{unreferenced}} tag, even though the subject's WP:N is beyond question, there is nonetheless a WP:A issue that needs to be addressed, and the V&A link is no help as a WP:RS citation for use anywhere in the article. —72.75.70.147 12:07, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

You will see I've had a go at explaining why I linked to the pages on the V&A site for each article. Whilst going through I remembered about copyright. Many of the photographers pages have links to pages of images, the V&A has permission to use them on their site but I'm not sure about putting them of wikipedia. I remember thinking when I was going through how disappointing it was to read about the photographers work and not being able to see examples of it, hence the link. The same applies to many of the other images on the V&A site, much time is spent seeking copyright permission! We would really like to add images to articles though, and this will be part of my efforts where I know it's ok to use them. Hope this all makes sense. Fine work, Grasshopper! I'm kind of distracted at the moment (and spent my last scheduled period getting an IP vandal from Jakarta blocked), so I only gave your recent edits a cursory glance, but I'll come back Real Soon Now to examine them all in detail and make suggestions re: cite or EL ... as for the copyrights, if there's a problem with V&A not being able to "share" images, alternate sources are George Eastman House and Library of Congress, like for Dorothea Lange ... she has enough already, but she came to mind as an example of "certain knowledge" that copies of some of her images (like Migrant Mother) would be visible on all three sites, as well as beau coup others ...
