Hi Adam, I haven't heard back from you in awhile. Submission is due tomorrow so can you please review? Julex1524 (talk) 20:17, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi Adam, you had to move my paragraphs out of the sandbox. Our instructor is directing us to work on them and add more content. Can you please advise so I stay current in my course? I a determined to master this! Julex1524 (talk) 17:24, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

I added my own opinion to the topic for you to edit. Julex1524 (talk) 17:15, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

HI ADAM, Our instructor is stating to do Training Each week. Where do you find them? Mine states I am up to date but if she is adding new ones I do not know where they are. Thank you! Julex1524 (talk) 12:27, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

Hey Adam, per [1], I think you know I live in this community and can help this bunch if needed. I emailed the course instructor a while back, he knows who I am IRL if needed. Montanabw(talk) 06:27, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

User:Stand up comedian

Hi, I don't know if User:Stand up comedian needs more of your help. He's been trying, rather unsuccessfully, to make fairly minor additions to Alethea Arnaquq-Baril. I'm trying to steer him in the right direction, in as non-BITEy a way as possible. My sense is he's having trouble figuring this all out. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 17:23, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

  • @Shawn in Montreal: Thanks for the pointer. I'd love to help more and I tried to point them in the right direction before they moved the article into the mainspace (or the instructor did), but they haven't responded to my comments/questions. I'm out of the office for the next few days but I'll try and get in touch with the professor to remind the student they're getting feedback. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:27, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
  • Oh I see. Yes, the article was created by him (or her) in January. Funny, that he seems to be having trouble with fairly minor things, now, months later. Either a very gradual learning curve or the account is being shared with someone else? Anyway, it's nothing major. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 17:35, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

Sarps 95

Hello Adam,

I just got warned about having my article taken done because of the improper citation. Can you help figure out? Citations are completed now.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Frijters — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sarps95 (talkcontribs)

@Sarps95: your article Anna Frijters now has no problem templates at the top because User:MontanaBW did not think that the problem templates were appropriate or helpful. You can see the full history of the article by clicking "View history" at the top of it, which would give you something like this. Adding more sources is always good if there are any more.
Separately, there was a warning on your talk page about your article originally being in Wikipedia: space, but you correctly moved it out of Wikipedia space into article space, so that is nothing to worry about.
Also, again thanks to MontanaBW, your article also has a nice talk page, which you can see at Talk:Anna Frijters. MPS1992 (talk) 04:51, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

Case Western Reserve University - American history

Hi Adam, is this something you can help with? User talk:Materialscientist#Blocked students from making accounts.

I don't know if the professor is using the resources available for education or is working with Wiki Ed, and I also don't know if the IP address mentioned is still blocked or not. But at the time of writing they don't seem to have a reply to their query. MPS1992 (talk) 08:04, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

Its now been mentioned that the IP has been unblocked. MPS1992 (talk) 06:32, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
  • Thanks, MPS1992. I was out on vacation yesterday (I never used the vacation templates on my volunteer account, now I'm thinking I ought to use them here), but I don't believe that is one of our professors. Thanks for the heads up. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:02, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

Wiki project Women in Warfare with Dr. Phelps

Hi Adam, this is Hannah Long again from Dr. Phelps' class. I have a pretty tricky question for you - part of our final research projects in the class include a wikipedia page for our subjects...we have all chosen women figures somehow involved in warfare and are doing extensive research in order to present research posters at an event at our school. However, my subject is Asma al-Assad, and although my research is obviously original, she already has a pretty hefty wikipedia page. I'm writing to ask you what angles I can approach this with--will I be able to extensively edit her page? I have a lot of research, most of it scholarly, and I'm sure I could add. However, the page already has some sort of sanction flag on it, so I'm worried my options will be limited. Thank you! Hannahelong (talk) 22:43, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

  • Adam, can you instruct how to interact with a page that is locked/sanctioned? Bellicist (talk) 16:02, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
  • Hi Hannahelong and Bellicist. We normally recommend students steer clear of those areas, as the restrictions themselves can get students in trouble and they are restricted because they tend to be characterized by sharp and sometimes intractable discussion, not heavy editing on the article page. You'll end up, if you're successful, still writing less than most of your peers though if you're careful and diligent I think you'll be pretty proud of what makes it in. Here are some things to know:
    • That particular article hasn't had much talk page discussion since 2013, but it is currently being actively edited; see the revision history of the page. So there aren't any major active controversies on the page--if there were I'd steer you away regardless, but you should consider that each sentence in the article may have a reason for being there or have been the subject of discussion or editing by multiple people.
    • If at any point someone reverts your change in the article, don't restore it. Even if it seems like a mistake. Even if what you wrote looks obviously correct. Even if what they reverted to looks obviously wrong. Instead, discuss your change on the article's talk page. Explain why you made the change you did and try to find out what they found objectionable about. it. You may not be reverted, or if you are the person doing it may explain their reasoning on the talk page, beginning the discussion. But you will have to use the talk page at some point.
    • Try to think about small changes to multiple parts of the page, rather than in a new section you might write entirely or a major organization. If you want to do either of the latter, you should propose the change on the talk page before you make it. That is to say, you should write the exact text you want to add in a sandbox, then make a post on the article talk page explaining why you want to make a change like that.
    • You may run into some idiosyncratic opposition or at least that is how it may feel. You can always leave me a note asking about the feedback you get.
    • If you do start editing that page or the talk page, an administrator may visit your talk page and leave you a harmless note that looks like a summons to court. The note will remind you that you are 'aware' of the sanctions on the page. It's a formality for these topic areas so afterwards an editor can't violate the rules and claim ignorance. It's not an indictment of anything you've done or an indication you're in any trouble at all.
  • I hope this helps. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:59, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

Help needed

Hi Adam , thank you for supervising me on my article Mee Jawa . I did some changes to it and I do not think it looks plagarized anymore. However , in my reference section , I am not sure why the numbering is not following what I want. I tried to retype it but it still comes out like this . Please do assist me on this, thank you.

Amyaph (talk)Amyaph (talk) 2:21,5th April 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi Amyaph. I've updated that article somewhat. The reference issues may be coming from the fact that the numbering is auto-generated. Add references in the text itself and the reference section will be written in the order you used the reference. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 10:35, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Proposal sent

Hi Adam! Thanks for your help. I proceeded with the help of Dr. Phelps and have posted a hefty proposal for changes on Asma al-Assad's talk page. Wanted to let you know so you might take a look! Thank you so much. Hannahelong (talk) 20:36, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi, Hannahelong. I've adjusted the indentation to your comments a bit. Wikipedia talk pages still use wiki-code (the system that works under the hood on VisualEditor and was for most of Wikipedia's existence, the only editing option), so there are some conventions for formatting posts which may not be immediately apparent.
  • I'm replying by prepending an asterisk "*" to the start of my lines to you. This will add bulleted replies at one level of indentation.
    • If I prepend two asterisks, it will indent further.
Starting a line with a colon ":" will indent that line but not create a bullet.
Each ":" will indent further.
I can add a whole bunch
Or go back to one.
Less useful on talk pages are ordered lists: These are lines that start with a hashmark "#". They aren't numbered manually. Each new line starting with "#" will add another element.
  1. First item
  2. second item
Start a line with a different type of indentation to break the list. I hope this helps. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:22, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

History merge?

Hi Adam, and @Guettarda:, I don't really know much about history merges etc, but the result of Guettarda's edits made after yours are that the Tatiana de la tierra article now shows as being created by Guiselac in January, rather than by Lowandhigh in March. This seems unfair on the latter. Is this the correct situation? PamD 11:38, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

  • I also don't know much about them. They didn't exist for most of when I was an admin. I asked Guettarda to perform the merge because it seemed like the student's primary difficulty was getting their work onto the page itself, so I added the content, but I wanted the changes made by the student to be reflected in the history. We could ask Lowandhigh. I'm also not familiar enough w/ revision deletion to know if deleting history prior to Lowandhigh's creation (which is nominal apart from this edit) counts as housekeeping. If it does, I'd say we could do that, keeping the history and their creation at that editathon. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 11:45, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
    • If you think it might be an issue, PamD, I'd be happy to fix it. It's really very easy in a case like this. Ian (Wiki Ed)/Guettarda (talk) 12:47, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

Sandbox article

Dear Adam,

I just received you feedback on my article on Frances Erksine Inglis. The source you mentioned that is a Phd Disseration is a critical source, however, I believe there is a published version, and I actually requested it from the library, so I can see if it has the same information.

Sincerely, Charlotte Mann Cmartlover (talk) 3:36, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

  • Thanks, Cmartlover. Let me know if you need a hand with anything. Also if there is not a published version the dissertation can still be used, you'll just have to be more cautious about drawing wide ranging interpretations from it. That's a somewhat fuzzy area so I'll be happy to talk with you more specifically about it if that's the case. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:42, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

Student participant on Wikipedia

Hi Adam. I've encountered an article being edited by User:Mpadilla123 who is participating in Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/California Maritime Academy/Information Fluency in the Digital World - 2 (Spring 2016). The user restored content that had two issues.

The first issue was content I removed due to not being sourced from the book the article relies upon. The article in question is 100 Greatest African Americans. The edit I performed was is here. The edit Mpadilla123 performed to undo my edit is here. Michael Jordon is not listed in the book. See Google books for verification.

The second issue is the proper formatting of references. My edit formatted weblinks in the article using the basic reference format. The student restored the sources in an incorrect format and placement. See diff to observe the placement of weblinks throughout article before I encountered it.

There are other issues, but these are the most egregious and I realize this person is learning. I figured you had more experience dealing with students. Thanks. Mitchumch (talk) 21:00, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the note and thanks for being understanding. I've left a message for the student asking them to stop reverting you. I don't know how conversant they'll be on talk pages (ironically, talk pages are much harder for new editors since we switched to the VisualEditor, because it's a second set of competencies to learn), but I've also invited them to talk about it here. I'll check back with the student tomorrow morning and see if I can't get them to address these issues. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:30, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
  • @Mitchumch: I reverted them again, for slightly different reasons. Left a note suggesting they add to the book as a book. If they continue to add the content to the article I'll let the professor know so I can make sure I'm able to communicate the issues to the student. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:56, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

Permission help and sandbox help

Good afternoon Adam,

I have encountered a few problems with moving my sandbox article to the main page. I have been working to add to the article "Nostos" so when I finished a section in my sandbox, I accidentally moved it to wikipedia:Nostos and not the original Nostos article, because I selected wikipedia instead of article. I tried to move it back and then I tried to move the wikipedia:nostos that I created to the main Nostos article but it said I needed permission to do both of those. I also added more to my sandbox that I would like to add to the main Nostos article but it said I needed permission for that as well. I know I'm not supposed to copy and paste so I am unsure of what to do in this case. I would like to add the section that is no longer in my sandbox and the section that is in my sandbox to the main Nostos page.

Thank you, Tiffani

  • Hi, TiffaniHunter. I've moved your page to User:TiffaniHunter/Nostos so you can work on it. The reason you were unable to move your work to Nostos is because an article exists there. Improvements to that article can be added via the editing process, as your sandbox and mainspace training module will show. Don't copy your work as it is now over the existing article, either. The current article is short and needs some improvement, but you should take a look at other, more well developed articles to see what those improvements ought to look like. I'll suggest some improvements to your draft in a bit. Sorry about the confusion on the move. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:53, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

Help: Maps

Adam,

I'm currently working with one of your WikiEdu groups, and I'm trying to figure out how to navigate putting a map up on the Tofa language page.

I went to Wikimedia to check out the rules on Public Domain, Fair Use, etc. and I couldn't find much information concerning maps. It seems like printed maps are usually included in copyright rules, but what about digital copies (e.g. Google, MapQuest, etc.)? My impression from the Google Maps info page is that it is permitted to upload these maps to the Wikimedia Commons. What's your take on it? Thank you in advance. RlndGunslinger (talk) 23:56, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi, RlndGunslinger. Google Maps' commercial use is restricted, and anything which is added to wikipedia must be free for any downstream use, commercial or not. The best way to think about this is to treat any media you upload to Wikimedia Commons the same way with regard to copyright. You can read about that in the handout on Illustrating Wikipedia. Your preferred map may already exist on a Commons, or on a site with a free license (as described in the handout or on the links in the Upload Wizard).
  • Alternately, you can take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps, which is the landing page for a community of Wikipedia editors who are interested in working with maps. They've got information on how to create maps and a page where you can request a map be created: Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop. If you want them to create a map, the more specific you can make your request the better--you can see past requests on the page that provided more information were fulfilled more quickly. It makes sense, given that those are all volunteers!
  • I hope this helps, Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:45, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
I started to make a request on Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop, but I realized that I needed better information to give them (and sources, of course). I had just about given up hope finding a decent source of coordinates/features to use as guidelines for the map, when I found that a Russian user had already created a file on WikiMedia Commons! I guess all's well that ends well. :) Anyway, thanks again.

No problem. If you need anything else, let me know. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 12:58, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

Quick Question to Move Sandbox Info into Femme/Butch Entry

Hi Adam!

Thank you so much for your feedback on my sandbox for the Queer Identities class at Montclair State! I want to move it over to the Butch and Femme article on Wikipedia but I want to know how I should go about doing this, am I able to create a new subheading "The Current Climate of Discussion Around Femme and Female Femininity" or add a subheading that continues to the break down of the entry into time periods so "Contemporary" or "Current"? Or is there another area of the article you feel I could better integrate my addition? Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

  • Hi, Tupperlake. I'll respond on your talk page. I also moved your section to the bottom of my talk page. If you want to leave a message for an editor and don't want to worry about where to place it, you can click on "new section" to work in a new window that will automatically create a separate section for you. Students using sandbox as the refs

I've gotten a ton of articles in which people are using their sandbox as refs. Here's a diff of one article as an example. One article had over 25 of these. The class is University of Missouri/CL HUM 3250 Epic. I'm not entirely sure if it's the student's goof or VE. Can you contact the class and tell them. Bgwhite (talk) 08:35, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the note, Bgwhite. I'll look into those articles and let the instructor know. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:55, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

Another class, but the same problem in Susanne Langer. Class is Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/University of New England/WGST 200 Intro to Women's and Gender Studies (Spring 2016). Used VE again. Looking at User:Mgosselin2/sandbox, it is ok in there. I'm thinking this is a VE error. There is a definite VE error in the article in which nowiki tags get placed around the ISBNs.

I've seen atleast 30 articles with the problem and my partner in crime mentioned he has seen alot. You might want to mention that they do not use VE to copy material from their sandbox. I've recopied the Mgosselin2/sandbox into the Langer article, so it should be fixed.

@Whatamidoing (WMF):, do you have any ideas? Magioladitis emailed me and he reported the error (T133143) and was declined. I'm getting furious at the error reports declined because they are "copy issues". The nowiki tags around ISBNs was reported six months ago by me (T117165) and is going nowhere. Bgwhite (talk) 08:20, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Pinging Sage (Wiki Ed). If this is a bug in VE combined w/ students copying over material from the sandbox, can we tell how widespread it is? Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:58, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

I believe these are cases where a user copies their sandbox while not in edit mode, and then pastes it into VisualEditor. I was able to recreate the problem by doing that. It works properly if you copy it while in VE edit mode and then paste it. So it's maybe not a VE bug per se, but detecting bad copy and pastes like these might be a good enhancement for VE. @Whatamidoing (WMF):, is that — better handling of HTML pastes that appear to be from other wiki pages but done wrong — something that the VE team has talked about?--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:10, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
Ah, I see that James recognized the cause in that Phabricator issue and said that it's not something they can fix. How widespread is this kind of mistake?--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:14, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
This particular one is new to me, but I've seen a variety of formatting problems from copying into/out of pages in various states (wikicode->VE, VE->wikicode, rendered page->VE, etc). Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:16, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
There's been around 50 articles this past month with the problem. I've seen it with non-students (by quick glance) as well. I don't recall seeing this issue before. So either this is a new VE bug, the student's were doing it differently in the past or my lousy memory is playing tricks. I don't trust James at all. With similar "copy" issues, I've gotten all sorts of different excuses from him on why it won't be fixed. Bgwhite (talk) 05:53, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
Today's article in which Visual Editor barfed is Nostos. I think I fixed things. I'm not sure what class she is in. Bgwhite (talk) 07:57, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
It's from a course on classics. I looked for other articles they might've impacted w/ the errors, but haven't found any yet. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:44, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
  • Another case below where a student (Mellieclem) copied from the sandbox, noted the problem and self reverted. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:24, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
    • You have to open the page in the visual editor before copying it. The blue ref number in "Read" mode is just a link, and if you copy that number, then you get the number itself (exactly as if you had copyied any other link on the page). Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:41, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
      • Thanks, Whatamidoing (WMF). I let the student know that on their talk page below. Noting here because it's another example and we were looking above for a sense of how common it is. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:12, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

@Whatamidoing (WMF): I've already fixed five articles today (only one yesterday). I'm not about to fix Uxoricide. It has been edited today ~20 times by three people. It's going to be a mess to fix. Bgwhite (talk) 06:24, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Bgwhite That course doesn't look like it's associated w/ Wiki Ed. @Ian (Wiki Ed) and Samantha (Wiki Ed): have we had contact w/ this course or this instructor?
  • We're also working on a script to see comprehensively where our student edits are inserting these errors. That should provide some more solid evidence of how prevalent the problem is for all students (who are more likely than other editors to work in drafts on extant articles) and give me a list to work through. I'll post it here when it's done. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:54, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
    • Not as far a I know. But oddly enough, I've looked at those usernames at some point (they're all faded blue links), but I have no idea why I would have done so. Strange. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:02, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
  • @Whatamidoing (WMF): User:Adam (Wiki Ed)/garbled is list of the 79 occurrences of the above pattern ("\[\[User:\S+]]") in ~9700 student edits this term. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:13, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
    • Note this is a lot higher among Wiki Ed students than the general population. For context here we identified 12 occurrences in a sample of 507833 revisions from the recent changes feed. Another Article (talk) 20:08, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

@Whatamidoing (WMF): Another one somebody gets to fix, Buck and the Preacher. Also, your regex is wrong. "User" doesn't necessarily have to be there. See Buck and the Preacher. Usually, these are not copied from a sandbox, but from a non-Wikipedia source. Bgwhite (talk) 05:40, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Another one, Friday Foster (film). I've reverted this one as there is so much messed up. Visual Editor really crapped out on this one. Bgwhite (talk) 05:52, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

Concerns regarding my contribution to Epistemic Democracy

Dear Adam,

I have repeatedly had content that I added to this particular page removed by one user in particular because of claims that it is poorly cited or is "long original research commentary." However, neither of these are true and the work I have contributed is well sourced and reflective of the work in the field on the topic. For example, one of his deletions included the comment "add actual definition and source," both of which were indeed present. In addition, the parts that s/he changed rather than just deleted are poorly cited themselves. I am not sure how to continue developing this project because it seems that the more I add, the more is deleted by this user in rather unhelpful ways. Please advise in how to proceed.

Hi Adam, I want to move the content from my sandbox into an established article, but I'm concerned that it will screw up the existing citations since I've cited items in my own work. Will it adjust accordingly once I copy the content over? The material I have will go within a current section. Thanks! Mellieclem (talk) 19:45, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi Mellieclem. The citation numbers are generated automatically and aren't expected to remain constant over time for a given article, so you can update an existing section with your work without worry. The only thing you'll want to check is if the material you replaced contained any named references (created by the VisualEditor when you re-use a citation) which are defined there and used elsewhere. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:11, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

Thanks so much! Mellieclem (talk) 20:19, 29 April 2016 (UTC) I tried copying my information and inserting it into the article, but the citations didn't carry over. Instead, when clicking on them, it jumped back over to my sandbox page. Do I need to recite everything after it's moved?Mellieclem (talk) 14:24, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Mellieclem, when you copy from one wikipedia page to another, you have to make sure you're in edit mode on the page you copy from. You can click "edit source" to use the source editor and past the wiki markup into the target page (which you have to open in the source mode as well). You can copy using the VisualEditor but you need to click "edit" first, even though the presentation is roughly the same, what you copy will be different while editing. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:11, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

That worked! Thanks again! Mellieclem (talk) 18:33, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Students tagging a redirect

Hello, Adam! I‘m about to go to 3R with students adding their course template to the redirect page Talk:Athletics in Epic Poetry. Unless I‘m wrong in thinking the banner doesn’t belong there—it is on the actual page—do you think you can weigh in, in your advisory/liaison capacity? OTOH if I‘m going against accepted practice, please let me know.—Odysseus1479 23:41, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi, Odysseus1479 That banner was being added because the student listed their assigned article on the dashboard as the miscapitalized title. I've removed it (there is a banner on Talk:Athletics in epic poetry already, which is the correct page title). Those edits were made via the dashboard and were updated by different students as they assigned article to themselves. Sage (Wiki Ed), would it be possible for the dashboard to not revert removal of the banner on talk pages? Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:09, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
    • Odysseus1479 I just made an update to the dashboard that should prevent posting assignment templates for redirects. --Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:13, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick action; I hadn’t realized the edits were made ‘remotely’.—Odysseus1479 18:39, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Gender and Sexuality in Hip Hop Culture

Also pinging @JustJess PhD: It appears the articles created as part of this course are suffering from major issues, most importantly adherence to our biographies of living persons policy. Additionally they read more like research papers than encyclopedic content. Please refrain from moving more pages to the mainspace until they have been carefully reviewed. I know you mean no harm; the policies and guidelines can be quite complicated. We just need to ensure contentious, opinion-driven content about living people does not make it to the mainspace. I plan to work more on your drafts tonight, so please bear with me. Thank you for your understanding! MusikAnimal talk 20:42, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

@JMusikAnimal: I have spoken to my course about the tone (not research papers) and while there is certainly room for improvement, they are working from valid, published sources on the topics they have chosen. Let's be sure not to categorize these sources/topics as "opinion-driven" simply because they are "contentious"...certainly the same can be said for much of the information presented as neutral on Wikipedia. My course responds specifically to the documented gender and racial bias in the entries (some of them participated in the Art + Feminism edit a thon), and I'd hate for them to feel disempowered in the information they are sharing because it is "different." We had this issue last year as well and hoped to avoid a repetition of the debate as to what counts as neutral. --JustJess PhD (talk) 20:53, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Precisely, and this is why I am I asking you to hold off on moving the pages to the mainspace. If you do you're going to get patrollers biting you and the pages might be deleted altogether. Indeed, it's the contentious subject that makes this so difficult, and because it's contentious is why we have to be extra careful – especially when you are writing about living people. Just understand I'm here to help and not give you a hard time :) Like I said I will do my best to help later this evening, which for me will be around 4 May at 4:00 UTC MusikAnimal talk 21:14, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
+1 to what Musik says above. The requirements about living people are quite strict and will proscribe many using self published sources or group blogs. See here for our handout on biographies. I will be available to help tomorrow morning (EST) as well. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:17, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Visual Editor Problems

Hi Adam, I seem to be experiencing issues with the visual editor. For a while, when I would load an article, only half the time could I access the edit tab, and now I can't access it at all. I only can see the edit source tab at the top of the page, and while I am capable of figuring out the wikitext, I really prefer the visual editor. Any idea on how I can go about fixing this issue? I am running Firefox. Thank you! Stayhomegal (talk) 05:33, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi Stayhomegal. In your preferences under the "editing" tab you'll see options for "editing mode". If you select one that includes the VisualEditor (I stick with "show me both editor tabs" because sometimes I need to use the classic editor) it should appear again. Moving sandbox into wikipedia

Hi Adam,

You just left me feedback for the Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham article. I just moved the sandbox into wikipedia to make it live. I just requested feedback as a follow up, I made no changed to the ones you made! Sorry! I just wanted to ensure that I am done and I can send the link to my professor.

Thank you so much for your time, Phoebe

  • Hi, Phoebesosa78. I removed the draft template and added some categories (you can see them on the bottom of the page) but otherwise it looks good. Thanks for your work! Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:19, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi Adam, I hope you're well. I wanted to ask, is this edit, "practice editing session for AfroCROWD", something to do with the Wiki Ed organisation as the user page seems to imply?

The editor in question seems already to have received advice on their talk page about this, but perhaps is ignoring it? MPS1992 (talk) 20:44, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi, MPS1992. They're an instructor for the courses listed on their user page but there's no organizational affiliation w/ any editathon that I know of. I've send an email to them to let them know about the issue. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:24, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

Moving sandbox into Wikipedia

Hi Adam, I just attempted to move my article on "Gender Pay Gap in India" into the Wiki mainspace. However everytime I open the page, it says the page is still part of my sandbox. Could you please let me know how to correct this? Apologies for the confusion. Thanks!

  • Hi, Abhinayaprithivi. Looks like you found the template that creates that message and removed it. Do you need a hand with anything else in your article? Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:53, 13 May 2016 (UTC)
Hi Adam, thank you for your reply. The article appears to be on the wiki main space now. I am still in the process of completing the last few sections of the page - please do let me know if you have any feedback on what I have put together so far. Also, there is a template message regarding this page not meeting wiki notability standards - should I keep this, or remove it upon completion of my contribution? Thanks for your help! Abhinayaprithivi (talk) 20:45, 13 May 2016 (UTC)
Hi, Abhinayaprithivi. You can remove that tag if you feel you've added multiple independent, reliable sources about the subject to the article. I think it was added because many of the sources are about other subjects rather than the subject of the article. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:33, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Moving page

Hi Adam, I submitted a proposal to move a page from "Winnebago Language" to "Ho-Chunk Language." The discussion is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Winnebago_language

There have been 2 admin comments in support of the move, and one in opposition. I see that the discussion may be closed 7 days after being opened if a consensus has been reached, and that time has now passed. I'm not sure if the discussion on the page qualifies as a consensus, also, I'm hesitant and not sure how to close the discussion as a non-admin if it is. How do you suggest I proceed with the move at this point? Linglenglang (talk) 19:02, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi, Linglenglang. I'd give it a few more days. Another user may come by and make the eventual decision a lot easier. If, after a few days more, you don't see any further comment, I think you can move it yourself. If it's reverted again, let me know and I'll have an uninvolved admin come by and take a look at the discussion. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:31, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
    • Hi Adam. Still no activity, so I've gone back to make the move. However, I'm getting an error message that I can not make the move because I do not have permission. It says that " a page of that name already exists, or the name you have chosen is not valid". Is this because the same move was rejected previously? In any case, it seems I do require an administrator to help. Linglenglang (talk) 22:04, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
      • Hi, Linglenglang. Since we spoke last another editor left a comment opposing the move. That means we can't claim consensus to move the article. This may have to wait until other editors see the discussion to see what a wider group thinks. I'm sorry about this. Controversial move requests can go pretty slowly on wikipedia, because moving pages is much more difficult to undo than simple edits. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:33, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Splitting an article

Hi, Adam. I am working to edit the rape kits page to give it a more global perspective. Currently, the information on the rape kit backlog in the United States overwhelms the page and yet still needs further expansion. I'd like to split the article and create a new page entitled "Rape kit backlog in the United States," which will provide a detailed account of the cause, policy efforts, funding, and state-by-state statistics and information. I have proposed the change on the article's talk page. Can you advise me on the steps I need to take going forward? Thanks! Medleya (talk) 13:53, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Question on editing an article

Hi Adam, I am working on editing "Missing women of Asia". However, the article originally (both before and after my edits) deals with missing women as a general phenomenon, and currently, there is no "Missing women" parent article (in fact, Googling "Missing women" actually leads to this Wikipedia page as the first result). Would there be any way to change the article title from "Missing women of Asia" to "Missing women"? How would I go about this? Another question - Because of the arranging I did in my article, the footnotes don't appear in order (it goes footnote 1, 5, 7, 6...). Do I have to fix this manually, or is there a way in Wikipedia to fix this? Thanks for your help! - Mjiang94 (talk) 16:20, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi, Mjiang94.
    • Ordering and numbering of footnotes is done automatically by the software which renders the page. It's determined by the order on the page where a reference was defined, so if a reference is re-used they can appear out of order.
    • Missing women was a disambiguation page between some other terms. I've moved that to Missing women (disambiguation) and moved missing women of asia to Missing women.
  • You'll want to make sure the text of the article now reflects the new title, since it is no longer assumed to be mostly in Asia. I know (as you mentioned) the gist of the article isn't specific but some lines may be. I changed a sentence in the lede but there are others. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:43, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

Citation

Hi Adam, I have one last question for you. In the "Wisconsin German" page, I drew heavily on 2 chapters from the book Wisconsin Talk, one chapter by Felecia Lucht (Older Immigrant Languages") and the other by Antje Petty (about German schools in Wisconsin). However with the citation manager, I was unable to properly give due credit to these authors. When I entered in Felecia Lucht's name and chapter title, this then automatically "updated" my other citations that referred to Petty's chapter. For now as a 'band-aid' solution, I manually have typed in (in parenthesis after the sentence) the author that is being cited. This is an unsightly and temporary solution. Do you have any ideas on what I can do?

Jsylor373 (talk) 20:03, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi, Jsylor373. I'll take a look and reply momentarily. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:19, 23 May 2016 (UTC)
  • Ok. I would use two different citations for the two chapters. You can use the "Chapter" parameter to specify a chapter title in an edited volume[1] and when you cite Petty's chapter you would create a new citation (not re-using one) w/ her author name and chapter title. Does that help? Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:31, 23 May 2016 (UTC)
  • Great! I think it worked. thank you so much for your help! Jsylor373 (talk) 20:25, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi Adam. This is just a FYI as I recently noticed[2] that two students in this course have been given articles focusing on GMO. In case you are unaware these articles recently went through an ARBcom case(Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Genetically modified organisms). They could definitely use some new eyes and some work, but you should be aware that the issues that lead to the case are still simmering away (e.g. User talk:Jimbo Wales/Archive 208#GMO's and concerns about corporate influence). It could potentially be a negative environment for a student to begin their editing experience. Regards AIRcorn (talk) 07:40, 25 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the heads up, Aircorn. I wasn't aware of the case. I'll bring this up w/ the students. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:41, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
  • Left a message for the two students planning to work on that article and sent a note to the professor. Thanks again. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:08, 25 May 2016 (UTC)

GMOs

I saw your edit at Talk:Genetically modified food, and I realized that I should give you, and, through you, the instructor and the class, a heads-up that all pages related to GMOs are subject to discretionary sanctions from a recent ArbCom case, and that the topic area is still extremely fraught, with many situations that can lead rapidly to blocks. I would feel uncomfortable with student editors coming into this situation without a very clear understanding of what can happen. --Tryptofish (talk) 22:43, 25 May 2016 (UTC)

Woops! I looked at the students' talk pages, and I see that you are already on top of it. Thanks! --Tryptofish (talk) 22:45, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the note, Tryptofish. I spoke with the prof yesterday and they're going to steer those two students to different topics. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 11:08, 26 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I think it's really important to keep student editors out of the line of fire there. --Tryptofish (talk) 21:12, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

Help on wiki entry organization for Carleton College sociology course

Hi Adam, I'm working on an entry on the Feminist pathways perspective for a course and I'm struggling with where to place one section. It's a bit of historical context, but not really enough to give it a whole section. In a couple of sentences, I discuss how in the past, research did not use this perspective. From there I lead into extensive detail about what the perspective actually entails. If you can, take a look at my sandbox and see what you think I should do with it. It's the third paragraph of the first section beginning with "It was not until..." Thanks so much.

Msrad1996 (talk) 05:22, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi, Msrad1996. I'll take a look and reply on your talk page. Thanks for asking where you need help specifically, as well!
  • Just as an FYI, I moved your talk page discussion down to the bottom, which is where new messages normally go. If you click the "new section" button when you're on a talk page a window will load with a box for only your section (adding a title will automatically create a heading as well). I've also turned your sandbox link into a "wikilink"--you can add those with the VisualEditor on your sandbox but on talk pages we have to use wiki-code, so [[User:Msrad1996/sandbox]] gets you User:Msrad1996/sandbox. Hope this helps. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:33, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Moving Wiki Page

Hi Adam, I tried moving my page and I wrote down my article title, however my name and "sandbox" was still next to the title, which is a violation. Adam, one of your students in Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/University of Chicago/Feminist Economics and Public Policy (Spring 2016) nominated the Gender pay gap in India article they created for Did You Know (see the link to the nomination in the section header above). The nomination has had some issues, and the student hasn't edited Wikipedia since May 23. Is there anyone who can take over the nomination and respond to the issues that have been found? If not, we may have to reject the nomination. Thank you very much for your time. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:27, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi, BlueMoonset. I'll take a look at the citations and see if I can clear that up. Is Yoninah's proposed alternate hook fine or do I need to find another? Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:00, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Yes, the ALT hook is verified and cited inline. But I'm not sure of the verifiability of other statements made in the article. Yoninah (talk) 19:37, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the info. I'll be able to take a close look at the article tomorrow and I'll update the DYK nom w/ comments. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:42, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Quick Question

Hi Adam, I was wondering if you could help me figure out what was wrong with a citation that I made in my sandbox page that has an issue with the "dates values in access date." I checked the help option but was unable to determine what the issue was. Thank you in advance. --AshleyFortierUML (talk) 19:47, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi, AshleyFortierUML. I fixed the date error. when dating references (either the "source date" or the date you accessed the materials), Wikipedia looks for unambiguous date formats, since the american and european formats (among many others) reverse the month and the day, so for 12 days out of every month it's hard to tell what the actual day is. If you use a format like "21 June 2016" there's no ambiguity and the software can parse the reference. I hope this helps. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:54, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
Okay thank you very much I appreciate it! --AshleyFortierUML (talk) 21:51, 23 June 2016 (UTC)

view history

Hi Adam, I am trying to access other classmates paragraphs so I can do a peer edit. When I look into each of their assigned subjects there doesn't seem to be any history for me to look at. Please advise where I would find this. Julex1524 (talk) 18:37, 23 June 2016 (UTC)

@Julex1524: are you looking for the View History tab (link/shortcut) in the upper right hand part of the screen when looking at an article that the classmate has edited?
(So for example at your course Dashboard you see that a classmate has edited Exit Through the Gift Shop so you click that blue link and then click "View history" in the top right.
Help:Page history says more about it and has a video explanation as well. MPS1992 (talk) 19:01, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Yes, I use to be able to pull up two columns to view the edits made but now there isn't anything there. Julex1524 (talk) 19:03, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) @Julex1524: Are you talking about a comparison between two different revisions? If so, click on "View history" and then select the two revisions you want to view by clicking the dots next to the "(cur | prev)" and then click "Compare selected revisions" Anarchyte (work | talk) 07:03, 24 June 2016 (UTC)

Titling Bulletted Lists

Hi Adam! I made a contribution to the Charles Jourdan page, but I've been frustrated by formatting. How do I create titles for bullet lists without them appearing in the page summary? Absterben (talk) 03:15, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

@Absterben: I think I have done what you intend with some HTML formatting that also seems to work in Wikipedia. I am not sure if cocktail recipes are generally considered suitable content for Wikipedia or not, but probably it can do no harm. I will not be trying it myself unless there is a non-alcoholic version, but I am sure others may wish to try it. MPS1992 (talk) 18:48, 27 June 2016 (UTC)
@MPS1992: Thanks for fixing it! That looks perfect. Cocktail recipes frequently appear on their respective Wikipedia pages, so I thought it appropriate for inclusion. I would be surprised if there were a readily available non-alcoholic recipe; I cannot understate how difficult it was to research it, the only credible original recipe being from a single German language page. I'm hoping that the contribution will save some frustration for those eventually involved in the same search. Thanks again! Absterben (talk) 20:09, 27 June 2016 (UTC)
If there is consensus that a section about the cocktail belongs in the article, then if you were to make such a cocktail yourself -- not that I would encourage such a thing -- possibly a freely licensed photo of it would belong in the article. And might belong in Wikimedia Commons otherwise.
If you want a challenge, I note that Jourdan is dead so in theory if there are no free photos of him available, then a non-free one could be included in the article with the right wording. WP:NFCC may be relevant. MPS1992 (talk) 20:20, 27 June 2016 (UTC)
@Absterben: just pinging you regarding the above as I realised that I didn't before!
Also to note that apparently my HTML solution was not the best way of doing it. In fact it was overly complex and someone using an automated format checker has fixed it for me. Quite a few people use automated tools like that on Wikipedia but I don't feel comfortable using them myself yet. MPS1992 (talk) 19:24, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

Quick Feedback

Hi Adam, I have been working on the nuclear whistleblower page for the duration of my course period and my teacher brought up an interesting proposal that I was thinking of pursuing. What is your opinion of merging the two pages Nuclear Whistleblowers and List of Nuclear Whistleblowers? Many of the whistleblowers mentioned on the List of Nuclear Whistleblowers page have already been written about in my article Nuclear Whistleblowers. I think it would be beneficial to both pages to merge them to prevent repetitiveness. If I were to merge these two pages, how would I go about doing so? --AshleyFortierUML (talk) 15:59, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi, AshleyFortierUML. I think there are two possible routes.
    • If you feel (and we can talk about this) that everything useful to a reader at Nuclear whistleblowers is redundant to the list, then merging one into the other is probably the best bet. This may not be the case even if most of the content/text on the page is related to the list as long as there are sources out there which can allow us to write a page about nuclear whistleblowing.
    • If, on the other hand, you feel that the two are redundant, we can start a merge discussion between the two of them. It will probably be active for a few days/weeks and provided that there is consensus to merge one page to the other we can do it or it will be done by an administrator later.
  • So it mostly comes down to your assessment of whether or not it serves a reader to have a page on nuclear whisleblowers that isn't a list. Does that make sense? Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:20, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
I think it would be beneficial to merge all of the information into one page so the user can find all of the information in one place. Many of the whistleblowers are mentioned on both pages but a few are not. Perhaps it would be a good proposal to see what everyone thinks about it. I am interested to read a couple of perspectives on the matter.--AshleyFortierUML (talk) 17:51, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
AshleyFortierUML There is a section on recent changes to whistleblower practice on the NW page (that isn't on the list), but nearly everything else is a better presentation of what should be on the list page. Can you think of other general topics (that aren't people) which would go on the NW page if it were perfectly developed? If not, I think that's a good call.
Proposing a merger is described here. Do those steps make sense to you? If not, I can help with any step along there. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:15, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
Hi again Adam, I posted to proposal to the page I would like as the destination of the merge and invited members who have edited the page to give input but no one has anything to say yet. Also, the bot has not come along to tag the merger proposal. Have I done anything wrong? -AshleyFortierUML (talk) 16:28, 17 July 2016 (UTC)
Hi, AshleyFortierUML. Sorry for the delay, I was on vacation. I've merged the two articles since the proposal hadn't attracted any comment. So your work is now at List of nuclear whistleblowers. Thanks for identifying the duplicated content and proposing the merge! Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:46, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

Possible copyright violations by College of DuPage student(s)

Please see here. Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 17:53, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

No worries. I'm checking the others on the list at Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/College of DuPage/ENGLI1102-055 (Summer 2016). I've done down to Ashnerj and have found no other problems so far. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 18:09, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

More: This and search "A 1920 decree imposed a mandatory minimum penalty of six months in prison for (non-Communist) possession of a firearm, even where there was no criminal intent." and more is copy paste/close para.

  • also looks like some marginal sources being used, even in cases where those sources are being properly summarized (looking at some other articles from this class). Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:26, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
I did see Wikipedia used as a source here and there. That's pretty marginal. :) Anyhow, I've finished checking and Earwig's Copyvio Detector didn't find anything else. It doesn't always catch everything, so I also dump strings into a search engine from time to time. I may have missed something, but probably what's found above is all of it. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 18:29, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I've been working through the student list (by bytes added, not alphabetically) and so far I haven't found more copy-vio issues. I'll send an email to the professor w/ some info on this later this week (I'm playing hooky during a staff meeting right now to do this. :) ). Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:33, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
Happy to help. I've posted at the prof's talk. I'll leave it in your hands from here. Cheers, Anna Frodesiak (talk)
I am so sorry to have bitten one of your students. I've explained and apologized at my talk, the article talk, and the editor's talk. Again, I am terribly sorry. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:49, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
