1.5 millionth article[edit]

My decision was based on a comment to the main page talk by AmiDaniel: "It's not conclusive yet though--the contest seems to be between Kanab Ambersnail, Hotel Torni, and the one you mentioned. We won't know for sure for some time, so let's just try to stay calm". A while after he made it, there was no decision, so I decided to step in and just choose Kanab on the basis that it couldn't be declared trivial, as it is an endangered species, and that the article could easily be expanded. While the Hotel Torni did show promise, there was no guarantee that there'd be enough interest and easily available information to expand it. Other choices mentioned, like Alonzo Jackson, just seemed really dislikable. As there was no definitive answer, I saw no harm in choosing a symbolic 1,500,000th by making those judgement calls. Let me know if you want to know more. -- Zanimum 18:03, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A NEW WIKILANGUAGE SISTER PROJECT[edit]

I propose a new major sister project of wikipedia Wikilanguage or Wiki Linguistics which specializes in the teaching of all languages. I have looked over the internet and have found some sites which do have several of the major languages giving knowledge of learning them but this wuould be huge and would provide all the information for learning languages such as most of the 250 languages that already have wikipedias. Learning a language is a major infomration source but wikipedia does not have this. Anybody interested in starting this ? I beleive this wikipedia sister project would be developed into an extremwely valuable resoruce not only for achieving knowledge of major languages but also other world languages which are not always readily available to learn.

I have propsed this on the main page discussion but is there any where else to suggest this? Ernst Stavro Blofeld 11:38, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have also proposed it to WIkiProject:Linguistics to make this into something huge.

If it is created I would hope that say five years down the line we should have the ultimate language learning resource in the world. If everybody contributes from their respective countris and knowledge of their languages we could see a resource which could allow you to potentially become fluent in hundreds of languages. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 12:08, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I strongly beleive this is what providing free easily accessible information is what wikipedia is all about and think this is an extrmely valuable component missing from the Wikipedia Foundation. E.g if I wanted to learn Norwegian or Czech or FInnish at the highest possible level or whatever this resource would be there to provide this knowledge. WikiLanguages would be divided into 250 or whatever massive sub projects e.g WikiFrench WikiSpanish WikiNorwegian WikiFinnish WikiDutch WIkiItalian WIkiPortuguese WIkiThai WikiJapanese etc etc dedicated to providing an English encylopedia of languagesErnst Stavro Blofeld 12:13, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your posting is Not Notable or wanted![edit]

we start this off with the following - "MY behavior needs improvement"? - here are my thoughts - I have a low tolerance for crap like this and on that note : WHO IN THE HELL DO YOU ( or the others in that matter) THINK THAT (or they) ARE? for tellin me this?!?

Thank you for the heads up - BUT at this point in time pleases keep your posts and thoughts on me to yourself, I didnt need to know this!! Not to get on a rant here. BUT HERE WE GO; Look here "DAD" - I still stand behind my posts that i made for the following Articles: "Articles for deletion/The Gunnners FC, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Technisoft, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Scrambler, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The world of the shining prince" so i added my 2 cents - This was a "debate" and NO-ONE debate it with me. and I still think that it was a good Article, so i posted MY thoughts on it - so if i don't just fall into line with that others have to say like "DELETE" ( and just only say that) you (and them ) can just F'n eat me, and on the that thought - keep your thoughts and post it on this to yourself - like wow, man , again who are F'n hell do you get to tel let me that my comments are "useless"? there NOT. and to give you a heads up on most of the "discussion" that i was a part of there was only "DELETE" from my point of view that is not much of a discussion or a debate for that matter. And ONE LAST THING - IF EYE want to remove something, that is posted here (rechoppe) - i going to do that, and if you dont like, that then that is just your issues and not mine.

So here is a question - after when i post this are you going to keep this... (i dont think so -but i dont care if you DELETE this.

thank you for your time and your discussion in this matter, -Rcehoppe

  • plaese not if i dont like something i will "DELETE IT" and if you dont like that - the get off your computer and get a life

thank you -R. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Rcehoppe (talkcontribs).

Merry Christmas[edit]

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Øvre Tysdalsvatnet, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at Talk:Øvre Tysdalsvatnet. You may remove the deletion notice, and the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. Regarding Suicide Silence deletion[edit]

Asmane Gnegne[edit]

Hello ! Thanks for correcting the article about Asmane Gnegne . Could you help with adding cittation ? The info about career of Asmane Gnegne I took from www.90minut.pl . However it's a big portal about Polish football and when I try to open player profile - the website address isn't show . It's something like java script . I am not good in computers , so I really don't know how to direct it to player profile . The info about Asamane apperances in A-Klasa is from my searching . A half year ago I have heard that one of Nigeriens is playing in A-Klasa team . They said it's very unusual . They called it one of the first case . However I am a big fan of one A-klasa team from my arena and I know for sure that in the game against Unia II Janikowo (season 2005-06) , in Janikowo team played Asmane Gnegne . So I think I can call him one of the first foreigners playing in such a low level . It would be diffrent if I had written the first. Merry Christmas and one more time thanks for correcting the article ! Bartekos 16:16, 25 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Togo Prefectures[edit]

Do you have a source where there are 30? Rarelibra 06:16, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looking back at this, now I remember. The only maps available out there show the 23 prefectures. If you could assist me in finding a map with and outline of the 30 prefectures, I would gladly update to what Statoids reflects. I have tried and searched and cannot seem to find an up-to-date map. The problem with this one is that even though it is up to date (Mar 2006), it doesn't show the prefecture boundaries. Rarelibra 19:00, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I updated the maps best I could, approximating off of the capital city locations from the other map. If we find anything more to reference on, let me know. At least the count and names are correct now. Rarelibra 20:32, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: AfD nominations[edit]

Regarding all of those pages you listed on the "Football cleanup project", why not just go ahead and bring them to AfD? Dsreyn 13:27, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Punkmorten,

I reverted WP:TIE to a redirect to Wikipedia:Translation, since having two places to request and to update the information about the ongoing translations is asking for trouble.

But of course I didn't forget the existing translation requests. I made a perl script that allows to migrate them quickly to the new system. Actually, I did already migrate a lot of the existing translates.

See Category:Translation sub-pages (182 items as for 14:41, 2 January 2007 (UTC)). It already contains pretty much of all the good translation requests from 01-october-2006 to 20-december-2006. I thought it was not useful to migrate all the old translation requests, because the information about them had a great chance to be not accurate anymore (either it was already translated, or the english article became better than the original in the meantime).

But if you find missing translation requests which are worth to migrate, just copy/paste their wiki-code on my talk page, and I will take care of them.

Can you create the appropriate pages for "no" and/or "tr" as explained on Wikipedia:Translation/*/Lang  ?

Re: Roa Station[edit]

Couldn't we merge Roa Station to Roa, Norway? Punkmorten 12:45, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • The reason I created this station article was because I was busy filling Wikipedia with Oslo T-bane-cruft and noticed there was another user following behind making (very good) redirects for all stations which happened to have an "Ø" in the name. But when I created Røa (station), I did not want Roa (station) to redirect there since it would be misleading. So what else was there than to create an article where that redirect should point? In any case I consider Roa, Norway to be a station town, where the railway station is the most significant feature of the community, so I think merging this is a good idea which I'll support. Feel free to do it. Sjakkalle (Check!) 12:51, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • OK, I've merged the article. That pretty much doubled the length of Roa, Norway. :-) Sjakkalle (Check!) 14:13, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of nationality transfers in football[edit]

Hi Morten! I have a question regarding the criteria for inclusion in the List of nationality transfers in football. User:Darwinek told me that the two of you created those criteria about a year-and-a-half ago. There is now some discussion about some of these criteria at Talk:List of nationality transfers in sport. Hey Punkmorten, just wanted to quickly thank you for going over a few of my recent additions to WP from the WP:MWA list of football bios. I am extremely busy with setting up the lists of films at present but I know Hungary and Romania still need geo-stubbing. I tell you what if you can help with referencing and copy editing on my new article The Temptress and help get it on the main page i'll give a helping hand. I haven't been geo-stubbing since December! Ernst Stavro Blofeld 23:06, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see tons of maps!! And not in the commons? Why on earth didn't the romanian wikipedians upload it into the commons for everyone then? I'll upload a few tomorrow. The missing villages from Romania is HUGE Iknow. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 23:08, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Remind me how you want the Romanian maps uploaded again. I forgot as I have been trying to remove the bias from Abbas Kiarostami which now looks ok. In the commons you want them uploaded but which ones!! I see you have been geo-stubbing the villages and leaving the maps unchartered ready for later. I would imagine we'll need a naming convention for every map. let me know later. All the best Ernst Stavro Blofeld 16:17, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see you have some maps now - the job should be a lot easier now that you and that Romanian disambiguation user sorted out most of the double communes in Romania. I remember him working very hard and yourself in fixing it first. Well done Ernst Stavro Blofeld 13:11, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can't I'll have to check. I know he did an enormously useful job in sorting out the communes disambiguation pages -some there are even like 7 or 8 comunes with the same name. Flags for athletics championships[edit]

Hi, I noticed we seem to be working on the same set of pages, but from a different angle. I am working with Ligulem to streamline the {{flagicon}} and {{flagcountry}} templates. Specifically, those templates now accept a second parameter to specify a flag variant. Therefore, instead of {{flagcountry|Ethiopia old}}, you would use {{flagcountry|Ethiopia|1975}}. I happened to update a few pages you were working on just moments ago, so I thought I should let you know of the changes. This is still work in progress for us -- you can look at the underlying templates (e.g. Template:Country data Ethiopia) to see if the flag variants are implemented yet.

Also, I have a related question about the results pages for the IAAF championships. Is the current standard to use the full nation name, or the three letter code? I ask because currently the {{flag}} template is used on a handful of those pages to produce the three letter codes, but I have a proposal to enhance that template so that (for example):

  • {{flag|Germany}} produces Flag of Germany Germany
  • {{flag|DEU}} produces Flag of Germany DEU
  • {{flag|GER}} produces Flag of Germany GER

Right now, any of those would produce "DEU". I would like to update pages such as 2001 World Championships in Athletics to prepare for the re-definition of {{flag}}, but I'm not sure whether to use full names (like you just did on 1982 African Championships in Athletics), or three letter codes as is the case now. Thanks! Andrwsc 22:09, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks. When I get around to updating those pages, I will switch from {{flag}} to {{flagcountry}} Andrwsc 23:56, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blackwater USA[edit]

My friend, there is an upsupported allegation against me that continues to appear on the Blackwater USA page in the History Section regarding allegations of resume fraud against me (Jamie Smith). I have repeatedly attempted to erase that line but someone keeps putting it back up. The comments showing up are slanderous and libel and I am asking if you could please either lock the page so that it can't be put back up there, or somehow remove it. These allegations are being made by those in the company (Blackwater) who don't like that I left and started another company that competes in the same field. This "accusation" just came up within the past few months on Wikipedia - I left that place over four years ago. Please step in and uphold the "unsubstantiated allegation" banner. Thank you for your help.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.160.189.59 (talkcontribs).

Hi. Abbas Kiarostami has now had a a lot of work and is now virtually complete - please read it throughand review it and leave your decision. Cheers. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:42, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed that you have placed a {{prod}} tag on List of Scottish footballers with the reason given that lists should provide additional information (that cannot be expresed in a category) if they are to exist. Would your concerns be allayed if the list was reformatted to provide information on (in addition to names, of course) the player's "Year or Date of birth", "City of birth", "Year or Date of death", "Position played", and "Current club". I would suggest a simple table format such as:

Name Birth date and age City of birth Date of death Primary position Current club
Stuart Abbot (1986-06-21) June 21, 1986 (age 37) Dundee Fullback Carnoustie Panmure
Charlie Adam (1985-10-12) October 12, 1985 (age 38) Dundee Midfielder Rangers

I am willing to do this conversion myself (over the course of several days). Although I could simply contest the prod, I don't want the article to go to AfD, where any changes will be under a 5-day deadline. What do you think? -- Black Falcon 23:54, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it will take some work to maintain, but I will check on it regularly by comparing it to with the category (for instance, checking a few letters each day). There aren't that many names on the list, so it shouldn't take too long to regularly check. I am contesting the prod and will begin working on it in earnest in a few hours. Cheers, Black Falcon 23:39, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Aarik Wilson, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. About deleting half the encyclopedia[edit]

Incidentally the same person who is putting your article above up for deleltion has put like 10 of mine up for deleltion even though they are clear notable encyclopedic entries. He has tagged Aaron Jones and Torres Snortevold a Norwegian film which has an areticle on Norgwegian wikipedia and has every right to be an article. If you could can you please translate this for the 1940 film articles:

Koste hva det koste vil - Tørres vil ha hevn. Hevn over konsul Krøger som har tatt hjemmet fra familien hans. Det er ikke lett, for Tørres er bare en fattig fiskergutt, mens konsulen er den rikeste mannen i byen. Men Tørres vet råd. Han tar jobb i fru Knudsens butikk og begynner å klatre oppover. Helt til han ender som byens mektigste mann. I rollen som Tørres møter vi Alfred Maurstad i en av hans glansroller. Dessuten møter vi bl.a. Wenche Foss, som har sin filmdebut. Fritt etter Alexander Kiellands roman Jacob.

I would be enourmously grateful. Why is this user trying to delete everything -why not just suggest improvement and more sources? THanks Ernst Stavro Blofeld "I've been expecting you" 13:26, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He is also trying to delete many Norwegian and Danish actors of the past which all deserve entries but need to be written into fuller articles -does he not know what a stub is and how to use an expand tag? Abdul Rahman Al-Athel also up for deletion. Please respond cheers Ernst Stavro Blofeld "I've been expecting you" 13:29, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Updated DYK query Did you know? was updated. On 10 March, 2007, a fact from the article Burger Lambrechts, which you recently nominated, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Yipsi Moreno on DYK for 11 March 2007[edit]

Updated DYK query On 11 March, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Yipsi Moreno, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Variants for Template:Flag[edit]

The update to the {{flag}} template uses variants inside the respective Country_data structures, such as Template:Country data Egypt and Template:Country data Hong Kong. The names of these variants are unique for each instance; most of them are identified by a year, but some are identified with another text label instead, in cases where it was felt to be clearer than just a year. Therefore, try {{flag|Egypt|UAR}} (or {{flag|United Arab Republic}}, if you want the wikilink to point to United Arab Republic instead Egypt), and {{flag|Hong Kong|colonial}} to get what you want. Hope this helps! Andrwsc 17:42, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of Chebign'o[edit]

An editor has nominated Chebign'o, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chebign'o and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. Jayden54Bot 17:22, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to say that[edit]

I noticed you comment at the deletion page for al-Ghabisiyya and it re-renewed my faith in humanity (not that it needs regular renewing, I know people are naturally good). I just wanted to say thanks. Tiamut 04:15, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Flag swaps[edit]

Hi there. I believe that when I altered the flag images they were not showing up on my computer correctly, although I do not recall what was wrong from the history. Looking back, I think you're right to question what I did, as I can't remember what was wrong with them in the first place. I had meant to write a note on the talk page explaining what was wrong but I neglected to do so.

I'm sorry I can't remember what I was trying to fix, but I know that I remember something not quite being right, probably with how they were being displayed on my computer. I hope the page is now fixed as it should have been. All the best. Bobo. 15:58, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Oleg Kramarenko, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contributions. Unfortunately, an article you recently created, Dragan Nacevski, may not conform to some of Wikipedia's guidelines for new articles, so it will shortly be removed (if it hasn't been already). Just wanted to tell you that the message you left at my talk could be deemed rather far out of place. Hi, seeing you have been involved in previous Afd debates I invite you to contribute to this discussion to clarify certain issues about football player notability. I think clearer guidelines are needed to avoid repeated inappropriate nominations for deletion and time consuming discussions. Cheers! StephP 17:38, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Punkmorten, you said Thus, playing for a national team does not in itself constitute notability. Why then at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Constantinos Makrides you said Keep, this would be a delete if he weren't a national team player? To play for the national team of your country considers notability or not? Also, as an administrator I would like to ask you, why articles about Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Etienne Barbara and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Constantinos Makrides were decided to be kept if international appearances are not considered notability? user:KRBN 13:33, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. You recently removed an unreferenced tag I placed on 2004 African Judo Championships and put "pfft" as an edit summary. I believe this was unnecessary, because, according to WP:CITE, the article does not properly cite its sources. Please do not remove tags unless you have fixed the problem. Yours truly, Boricuaeddie 00:59, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Thank you for properly citing your sources. To answer your question on your edit summary; it is, indeed, better. Boricuaeddie 21:58, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to see your opinion, following your contributions on the talkpage of WP:BIO. If international player does not mean notability, then I am wondering why this article will be kept. User:KRBN 20:08, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your answer. As I understood correct you mean good level national teams players are notable but not the weak. What are the worldwide scale countries? I would like to know. Because FYR Macedonia national team has never played in any major competition (World Cup or Euro) while Bhutan has (if I understand ok what u said unless correct me). And another question, are Maltese and Cypriot internationals (Cyprus never be in qualifying groups better than 2nd of the bottom) notable? Then why they were decided kept? I would like to have your answer (you are also an administrator). User:KRBN 20:44, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My created articles[edit]

Punkmorten said: Hi! I'm wondering: How did you get a list of articles you created, as well as the number?

Hey there Punkmorten, nice to see you again. My article creation list was achieved through a simple dedicated trawl through my Recent Contributions. I made it a serious policy of mine to include the words "Article set-up" in all my original articles, and I just searched through my contributions for this phrase.

I believe there used to be a Wikipedia tool on the toolserver which could search for articles to which you were the first registered contributor way back when, but given several changes in server I don't think this is now set up to do this.

All the best. Bobo. 11:25, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is that for capital, as in where people live or by how much assets they have available? CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 11:14, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was going to name it People by capital city, but seeing as that corresponding category is named Capitals and not Capital cities I chose its current name. Perhaps it should be speedy renamed. Punkmorten 11:16, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How about just a heading in the category explaining what the intention is. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 11:21, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, probably, as our article capital is about the type of city. Punkmorten 11:22, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Devotchkaslogo.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Devotchkaslogo.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 18:58, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Devotchkaslogo.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 18:58, 16 May 2007 (UTC). Thanks for uploading Image:Devotchkaslogo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 20:25, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted article query[edit]

Hey there. An anon editor just posted on Wikipedia:Editor_assistance/Requests#michael_hardinger asking why the article on him was deleted; from the deletion log, you deleted it as an expired prod on May 1. However, it does appear the editor has quite substantial notability that will probably meet WP:MUSIC if the article is actually fleshed out reasonably. (There are long-standing articles on both he and the apparently quite popular band he played with for 24 years on the Danish Wikipedia, but my Danish is a bit rusty, where rusty = completely nonexistent.) Would you be amenable to restoring it as a contested prod and at least sending it to AFD? Failing that, could you drop the article contents onto a subpage for me to work with? Thanks. Stadion Varteks[edit]

Thank you for your recent contribution to the Stadion Varteks page. What I was trying to do was get the page removed so I can move Stadion Varteksa over it as a redirect, if that makes sense. The Stadion Varteksa page is much older and would be the kept article, but it makes sense to exist at the Stadion Varteks page and not having to be redirected. Please can you help move the page onto the redirect page. Cloudz679 20:13, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would, but are you really sure Stadion Varteks is the best name? It gets only 95 Google hits vs 1210 for Stadion Varteksa. It seems we should let the page stay at Stadion Varteksa. Punkmorten 17:18, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

About Varhaug[edit]

June 1, 2007: Hi, I moved the former municipality Varhaug out of this article, because it's history and not what most people think of when they hear Varhaug. Old "Varhaug kommune" can be found at Varhaug Municipality. - User:Olaversterk

Hi, your move was reverted. It was deeply problematic as it went against standards, conventions and consensus in the English Wikipedia - according to which a village and municipality with the same name should share the same article. Punkmorten 08:56, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh sorry about that. I just thought a former municipality has fairly little interest and importance for the village today. Also I thought the definition of a municipality is a settlement with local government. I think it shouldn't be treated the same. Because the municipality included more villages. By the way, do you have the old municipality article I wrote, I wan't to merge that one into the village article, I feel it was better structured and explaining. Olaversterk 11:53, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I already merged it. If you want to improve the structure, feel free to do so at Varhaug. And yes, today villages and municipalities with the same name are covered in the same article. Punkmorten 08:21, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:'Source is given'[edit]

It says that it is a screenshot, and it says which film it is from. Surely, that would count as a source? On the other hand, the image will be deleted in a few days as an orphan anyway, so feel free to delete it if you think it should go. J Milburn 11:50, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you create the redirects after you have made the article. I think I deleted one of yours because it appeared as a red link redirect. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 09:33, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How about just letting it stay for maximum half an hour? Creating redirects beforehand is useful because it serves to collect all the incoming links. Punkmorten 09:38, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It was Evi Tsamoglou and I just restored it. I ignore yours now because I know you are creating the article but others may not be aware. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 09:41, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just thought about what you said above. I assume that you are using a tabbed browser. So why not have the redirects in different tabs, but not created, then open up the "what links here" in yet more tabs. You will be able to see the incoming links without creating a redlinked redirect. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 10:26, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Musa Nastuyev - Up for speedy[edit]

A tag has been placed on Musa Nastuyev, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Hi! About this image you said: "I know of no replacement image of the Nadirshah Throne. I have looked far and wide." Unfortunately, this is not enough - someone could clearly take a photograph of this. For examples of images for which no free alternative can reasonably be found, see Image:Swastikatree.jpg or images of deceased people. Punkmorten 08:43, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The image you deleted was a publicity photograph from govt of India. It depicted the then prime minister of India visiting the throne, a unique event. It was copy-right free and had no reasonable alternative. Would you please do us a favor and find a replacement?--Malaiya 02:35, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, no circumstances gave a clear and verified indication that the image was copyright free. Second, I am not obliged to find a replacement, and obviously I won't. Punkmorten 08:04, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It can be clearly seen that the photograph was part of the government release by The Press Information Bureau (PIB) for the press:http://pib.nic.in/archieve/phtgalry/pgyr2003/pg092003/pg19sep2003/190920033.html. It was clearly stated in the photo description. --Malaiya 04:53, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Press photos are not free, they are fair use. Fair use is restricted. Punkmorten 07:25, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Rød[edit]

A tag has been placed on Rød, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Eliz81 08:24, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know! I should've known, with a well established user and talk page such as yours, that's rarely the source of a CSD article. I was a bit surprised when I saw your page and should've investigated further before placing the tag on the article. I'll be sure to be careful! Eliz81 09:22, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Ørsdalsvatnet, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the page's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself.

If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this.

FIL World Luge Championships 1961[edit]

FYI. I put some comments on the FIL World Luge Championships 1961 about the controversey regarding Raimondo Prinroth and his two medals earned in the men's doubles event if you wish to look. Chris 14:31, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You were correct. The edits have been done on the 1961 page and the main page. I will do it on the Prinoth article and create it on the Prinot article as well.

Boateng[edit]

Why have you reverted the template of the WikiProject Netherlands I added to George Boateng? Knurftendans 14:49, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Must have hit the button by accident. Punkmorten 19:51, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why administrators should only deal with articles that they know information about[edit]

Since joining Wikipedia, I have noticed many occasions where administrators revert pages which contain information that many of them know nothing, (or very little), about. I propose that in future, administrators only revert pages where they:-

1) Know something about the content of the article, ie they some background information relating to the text or pictures within the article or category.

OR

2) Can give a very good reason for reverting or deleting the page at all!!

One exception to this rule would be blatant vandalism of articles.

Dreamweaverjack 21:30, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My statement is proved by the comment above mine about a user complaining because you have reverted a valid update that they had done. I would like to also point out that this is not a personal attack on your character or your role as an Administrator on Wikipedia.
Also, I would like to know what harm the List of Scottish footballers article does to Wikipedia, as you seem to be the person who listed it to be deleted, by didn't do so for the lists of Brazilian, Canadian, Israeli or Danish ones which are laid out in the same manner. Dreamweaverjack 22:38, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Prod[edit]

Hi PunkM, I prodded your article on Monica Toth since I think she fails to meet the standard of WP:BIO. A redirect to the track and field Romanian athletics article would be fine as well, though. Or pull off the prod tag and tell me I'm full of shit :) Cheers, Eusebeus 11:33, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, sorry didn't realise you were on a mission to create a whole slew of these articles. I jumped before I looked, pun intended. Sorry about that. I am not convinced that most of these meet the notabiltiy standard, though, for athletes. Competitors who have played or competed at the highest level in amateur sports I guess would be sufficient if it is considered a primary criterion. I've always argued it should be an additional criterion - i.e. one of the first set of the bio criteria need be met. I am guessing you'll disagree though. So, does that mean, then, that every single competitor of every single world track meet warrants an article? Anyway, please deprod as you see fit. AfD is a better venue to generate consensus on this. Eusebeus 11:54, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Current consensus is that all competitors of major international championships are notable, yes. I don't necessarily agree with this (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Anton Lui), but then again I believe that the placing in the final is a stronger claim to notability than merely competing. As you pointed out WP:BIO says "competed" though. I also tried to argue that the Commonwealth Games is a medium-quality event and thus less notable, unlike the European Indoor Championships which is indeed of high quality. Punkmorten 22:34, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I respect your AfD work and usually agree with you, so I was surprised to see you were creating these. But I'm happy to give you the benefit of the doubt. To be honest, I think the BIO criteria need to be strengthened across the board. Eusebeus 12:09, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Serious question, actually[edit]

How many times should an article withstand AfD before new AfDs on it are considered vandalism? Lacking any guideline, what is your personal opinion? Robert K S 23:22, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is not necessarily any limit; see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gay Nigger Association of America (18th nomination) and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Daniel Brandt (14th nomination). I take note of your subtle attempt of accusing me of vandalism, but if the topic doesn't warrant inclusion, it will go. Punkmorten 08:28, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tibet[edit]

Hi any idea what the process is for getting a page semi-protected from anonymous and new users?? The Tibet page is a nightmare to upkeep mostly from anonymous users who think it is a forum to promote Chinese politics. It needs constant reverting nearly on a daily basis as it will degrade quickly - we're trying to keep a neutral balanced argument between Tibetan nationalism and PRC policies as you'd expect in an encyclopedoa entry. Categories[edit]

Hey! I have a problem with some categories and I am hoping for your help.

Category:Kazakhstani sport shooters, Category:Kazakhstani swimmers, Category:Kazakhstani triathletes, Category:Kazakhstani gymnasts, Category:Kazakhstani cross-country skiers, Category:Kazakhstani archers, Category:Azerbaijani boxers, Category:Azerbaijani sport shooters, Category:Azerbaijani sport wrestlers, Category:Albanian athletes, Category:Cypriot judoka.

I tried to correct (or revert) all these categories (some of them you have created). But there is one user who changed my reverts back (some of them twice). I also asked him twice on his talk-page not to do it again - without success. So in my opinion these eleven categories are still wrong categorized.

May be you have any idea what can be done? Thanks in advance :) Doma-w 21:56, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much! Great to know that you understood my problem! I have found some more Greek cats with the same problem, I have corrected them today.
I have also an other problem: I have created this page: Gé van Aelst. But it is complete nonsens, because sorrily I mixed up two persons. I took the given name from Gé Regter and the last name from Kees van Aelst, but a person with the name Gé van Aelst did never exist... Can you please delete my mess? Thanks in advance and :) Doma-w 21:58, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good! Did you repair the sportspeople articles accordingly, i.e. stick the "oly com for x country" back? I have deleted Gé van Aelst, if you should encounter the same problem again you could use {{db-g7}} to avoid it staying for a month :) Punkmorten 22:38, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, I have not, but I will do it in the next days. Thanks for the deletion! I hope I will not need this template in the future :)
May I ask you: Do you think it will be helpful to merge the Category:Summer Olympics medalists and the Category:Winter Olympics medalists with the Category:Olympic medalists by sport to Category:Summer Olympics medalists by sport and Category:Winter Olympics medalists by sport? Thank you Doma-w 23:01, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Don't know, I haven't been involved with those categories. Have you tried asking at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Olympics? Punkmorten 23:04, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, I havn't because there is nobody interested in cats. Up to now the questions about cats were unanswered... Doma-w 12:32, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so. I don't have the book aymore, and the Internet resource has degenerated into a less informative map service. By the way I have got second thoughts about all the lists of villages - they have their uses but are probably WP:OR. Punkmorten 13:45, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted article J E Houston, Minister[edit]

I notice you have deleted this short article, presumable on the grounds of non-notablilty, which is fair enough, or because of its pedestrian English style (mine) which is even fairer. However, it is part of a larger project on the historic parish of Cambuslang which will be of encyclopedic interest to local schools, historians and the usual diaspora. Dr Houston was perhaps one of the most undistinguished of the holders of the post of Parish minister, but he is there, like others, for reasons of completeness in the history of this parish. I should add that until the Second World War, the Parish was the fundamental (civil) local government entity and the parish minister, that is the minister of the Established Church, had considerable and formal influence in its workings, especially with regard to education and social provision. So he is dull, but he is not just any minister who ever lived. He has some historical significance - he has a biographer - and I do wish you would consider reinstating him. I have read your criteria, and it seems to me he meets them, but I realise you will have a deeper understanding of the wider issues. I just think wikipedia is a tremendous local, as well as international resource for sharing knowledge. Hope you can help in this matter.Tony164 17:51, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article was deleted through the WP:AFD process, so I am not really personally involved in this and frankly don't want to be. Try WP:DRV. Punkmorten 13:45, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Punkmorten, glad to see you agree that this article is a good idea that has gone wrong, maybe you could help me in getting it back to how it should be. Notability of Workitu Ayanu Gurmu[edit]

A tag has been placed on Workitu Ayanu Gurmu, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Please do not remove speedy deletion notices from articles you have created yourself, as you did with Cedric van Branteghem. Please use the {{hangon}} template on the page instead if you disagree with the deletion. Thank you. I notice you're an administrator, but I'm pretty sure the no-removal of speedy still applies to you. There is no assertion of notability, that's why I've added the tag. I'm not sure that coming 4th in a race is notable. Oli Filth 08:16, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is, but even if it wasn't, he competed in the Olympic Games. If you do not know what makes an athlete notable, please ask on the talk page instead of slapping a speedy tag on it. Punkmorten 08:25, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, but the article doesn't mention that (the Olympic Games).
As for "participation in a race" = "notable", there must be tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of athletes who have competed in various competitions with no particular/notable success; do they all require articles on Wikipedia? (I'm not asking you to justify the WP policy, just curious!) Oli Filth 08:32, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah while it's true that it's not mentioned in the text body, it is stated by one of the categories, and verified by the reference. The European Championships is not just "a race" among "various competitions" entered by "tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of athletes", it is one of the most prestigious high-quality events in the world of athletics. Making the final is quite an accomplishment, and fulfills the WP:BIO requirements for sportspeople. See also Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Róża Kasprzak.
