Re talk page message

I just got this message before logging in, wasn't sure why? I've never edited that page before, and I have made almost all of my edits while logged in. Just thought I should bring this up in case it was an error. Also, Happy New Year! (or Hogmanay as its known over here) Vuvuzela2010 (talk) 20:11, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't realise that the date on it was the 5th of June. Still not sure why I got the "You have new messages" alert though. Vuvuzela2010 (talk) 20:15, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Hi, Vuvuzela. I dunno...looking at the situation I'm at a loss. I'd say shrug it off and don't worry about it unless other problems arise. Thanks for introducing me to a new concept. I'm embarrassed to say I've never hear the term before; especially considering that my forebears originated in Scotland. Could've been Scotland by way of Ireland...or Ireland by way of Scotland...or Norway by way of Scotland with a stop-over of a couple of generations in Ireland...anyway, I digress... Happy New Year to you and yours. Tiderolls 22:00, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Request for Guidance Re: ANI

Hi! Since I trust your judgement in these matters, I would like to ask for your advice as to my best course of action in this ANI. While I do not feel that I have done anything wrong, I would like to understand this matter from the standpoint of a highly experienced editor such as yourself. Thanks. Ebikeguy (talk) 23:09, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Technically, I think you have skirted the harassment concerns by not naming names in your original call to action. That said, posting an e-mail addy was probably pushing the envelope. Paid editing is not gonna go away...it's impossible, practically speaking, to police. I've tilted at my fair share of windmills but old age has tempered the way I approach matters. I would definitely advise that you float your ideas past folks when it comes to non-content matters; i.e. boldness is for article mainspace. Tiderolls 04:36, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
Wow. I had not thought of it that way, especially your last point. Many thanks for the wise words. Cheers, Ebikeguy (talk) 14:09, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

I kind of need a little help with this user. He is making personal attacks and I also find edit to be highly, well, just wrong. He refuses to calm down, and I just don't know what to do. Could you help? Cheers. Usb10 plug me in 18:19, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

hi Tide. Given the message here and one left on my talk page I would appreciate if you would mind re opening the ANI, I don't have access to a computer at the moment just my phone and is clear now that advice given following the original ANI is no longer appropriate and admin action is now needed. I'm unaware of calling him/her a sockpuppet but can't check at the moment. Thanks. Edinburgh Wanderer 17:45, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Hello, Wanderer. I will not be posting a report to AN/I for the time being. Although this individual's contributions have been less than stellar, I'm holding on to the hope that they will tire of swimming upstream and realize that WP's policies and guidelines are a framework and not a straight jacket. Of course you can post a report if you feel it necessary; soliciting other opinions is almost always helpful. See ya 'round Tiderolls 07:33, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
Hello Tiderolls. Well, well.
This is just classic. Edinburgh Wanderer auto-deletes, refuses to discuss, and then raised an ANI? And wants to raise another one? Nice.
The Lanny Breuer page is being censored. The topic of Fast and Furious is being censored. I find it amazing that there is no Wikipedia write-up of Fast and Furious after six months ('plus') of high-profile notablility. But *please*. Just "keep doing what you are doing". I won't tire of swimming upstream. I am not swimming. I am making commentary on the damn blocking the stream, while resting on a surfboard catching rays - and I have lots of popcorn. I take you people as-seriously as you deserve to be taken, which is "not at all". This isn't an encyclopedia. It's a virtual reality show. Carry on. Turtlewaxingmycar (talk) 08:45, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
back at ANI
See, this is what I mean.
This guy is childish. He deletes comments, deletes any questions on his talk page (I was irritated, sure). But the point stands, i.e. the page (Lanny Breuer) is subject-protected (i.e. "censored") vis-à-vis Fast and Furious. And Fast and Furious is a 'verboten' topic (i.e. censored). If someone wants to ban me, or what-have-you, or if this 'guy' wants to make a big-deal on ANI about my commentary, which clearly has upset him, then fine. The point is that Fast and Furious is a censored topic on Wikipedia. And there you have it. You could burn me at the stake, and that would still be true. Thanks for your attention. Turtlewaxingmycar (talk) 10:42, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Do you know how to move sandboxes to main space and do history splits please? Calvin Watch n' Learn 22:23, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Err...no. But I'll look at any specifics and if it's beyond me I'll find someone to help. Tiderolls 22:25, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
It's to move User:Calvin999/Sandbox5 to Complicated (Rihanna song), with the history starting from here. Calvin Watch n' Learn 22:26, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, this is definitely gonna take longer than you deserve to wait. I'll message a couple of folks to solicit help. Feel free to start your own search as well. Thanks for thinking I has the smarts to help :) Tiderolls 22:58, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Lol, but I don't know who can and who can't?! Calvin Watch n' Learn 23:32, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
In my looking around I found Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. This page may not be for sandbox moves, but you should find an admin there that knows their stuff. Tiderolls 23:39, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
Ah okay thanks. Calvin Watch n' Learn 23:39, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
  • History merges suck. The way to do it, Tide, is to move the article that's to be merged to the article that it's to be merged into (the "real" article), the hard way--by deleting the "real" article. Then, restore that article's history. Then, depending on the state of the article that's been merged into the "real" article, click on the history and revert to the last "real" version (this is typically necessary for "merge and redirects", probably not here). Now, if there are earlier versions of that sandbox that don't need to be part of the merge (as I think is indicated above, you could, I guess, delete those from the sandbox history first. Also, remove the old redirect from the sandbox. One more thing: it is possible that edits from the "real" article have been removed for whatever reasons--those would be restored and it's possible that you'd have to go in and manually remove them again. In other words, it's often a mess. Good luck! Drmies (talk) 14:56, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
    • Wait: Complicated (Rihanna song) is now deleted by Fastily. I would just move the sandbox to mainspace and lean on WP:HISTSPLIT: delete the history previous to your first edit for that article. It's your own stuff anyway, from your own sandbox, so it's deletion according to db-author, if you will. Have fun, Drmies (talk) 14:59, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm seeing very little fun there. There appears to be some history with the article that would indicate a troublesome past. I'll do a bit of poking around but Fastily usually knows their stuff; I'm thinking this may be a non-starter. We'll see. Thanks for your willingness to show an old dog new trix :) Roll Tide Tiderolls 15:11, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

I tried to expand the article but got bogged down and now I have errands to run. I've stored some links in my sandbox if you wanna use them. I may return to work on the article later...or not...I dunno. Tiderolls 16:55, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
No, I don't want to work on it, that's why I'm trying to shaft you with it. Remember how you once wrote an article? I hate writing biographies, but you need the practice. Moreover, he might be the next mayor in that odd town north of you... Happy days, Drmies (talk) 00:05, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Oh, yes...the glory days of actual content contribution*sighs*...So, yeah, I'll return to the article. I like bios. They're clear cut...no source, no edit. James Wise

Thank you Tiderolls, I believe James Wise and Scott Baron to be notable wartime authors. I just do not have the effort to continually contest deletions. If this is something you would like for me to fight for along with you I will...just let me know. Missclark (talk) 02:45, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Not to worry, if the articles are nominated for deletion you are not required to take any action. We are of similar minds that the authors are notable. My message to you was to make sure that I was not going against your wishes as to how the matter should be handled. Thank you for your contributions and your polite message here. Tiderolls 02:58, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

You're correct, the G7 criteria say nothing about notability (and I really don't see how this person is notable; for writing a couple small press books? Not exactly a shining example of WP:AUTHOR). At any rate, I realized after tagging that this was probably far too wonky a G7 nom to pass, arguably not unambiguous in terms of the original author's intention to delete. But by then I was away from the computer, otherwise I may have reverted myself. So I was surprised, not to see it declined, but to see it declined for such a weird reason. Anyhow, cheers. Hairhorn (talk) 01:54, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your input, Hairhorn. You still have WP:PROD and WP:AFD at your disposal and I would not second guess you for pursuing either. It's still my opinion that the subject is nominally notable, though. I fully realize that my decline was unorthodox and am willing to accept any manner of trouting that you feel necessary; but the article creator's statement here would indicate a recanting on some level. I do thank you for your patience in this circumstance and hope that you will feel free to bring any further concerns here for discussion. Regards Tiderolls 06:15, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Ha ha, no trouting necessary. Willing to let the whole thing sit for a while longer. Cheers. Hairhorn (talk) 19:57, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Hello Tide rolls. Please see this. I tried to help but no avail. If the user performs another edit like the ones before, should I report the IP? I am asking you as you being an administrator are personally involved and hence I don’t want to overstep. What do you suggest? Cheers AKS 19:11, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Arunsingh. Thanks for your consideration in coming here. I found the IP's behavior problematical as you can tell from the exchange on their user talk. I have recused myself from direct contact with this IP in the hope that without my interference they could find a way to contribute constructively within the guidelines and policies of this project. My failure to establish a raport with the IP may be due to some cultural or language obstacle. That the IP has been reverted by several editors and that they have been intransigent with regard to their method and attitude communicates to me that the possibility for compromise is not great. If you feel that more opinions are needed then I say proceed. I would trust your judgement. Regards Tiderolls 20:31, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
  • Thanks a lot. I am bit disappointed by action of other Admin (even though the action did not involve me directly) in case of article Stefan Wong (actor). Please see this and this. Do you want to step into the first discussion? I have raised objection as although User:Velella had rightfully reverted edits on Stefan Wong (actor), his decision was overruled. Cheers AKS 08:14, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
Regrettably, this is a common occurance of page protection. User:Skier Dude acted according to policy by protecting the page in the state they found it. Unless there is an overriding reason (BLP violation, copyvio or outright vandalism) the protecting admin should not take "sides" in a content dispute. As you have brought your concerns to Skier Dude's attention there is nothing for me to do at this point. You have directed Skier Dude to the IP's talk page and my comments will be seen there. Do not let yourself be overly frustrated by the protection. You have done all that you could. Regards Tiderolls 11:17, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Tide rolls,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and

Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's

Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we

teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community,

and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what

you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community

[[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_82#Learn_to_be_a_Wikipedia_Administrator_-

_New_class_at_MSU|HERE]], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my

students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training,

motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one

of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of

communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)

  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will

never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.

  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an

interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.

  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics

review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have

been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak

with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I

will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your

name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be

more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

The vandal on List of Iron Chef America episodes you blocked yesterday is back, this time as an IP vandal. The IP editor who got blocked

Hi there; you don;t know me from Adam (or, more appropriately, Eve). I'm concerned about what happened with that IP editor. Please see here and here for a bit more background.

This guy has been editing since 2009, was falsely accused of being another editor logged-out to cause disruption, had a CU/SPI called on them, and was (understandably) pretty miffed, especially when they were blocked by someone else involved in the dispute on the same page. They really weren't treated fairly, and their unblock request of "malicious block from an administrator involved in the issue debated at Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution_noticeboard#At_Wikipedia:Verifiability" was perfectly understandable, bearing in mind the actual circumstances as opposed to any wrongful assumptions. There's no way that a named-account editor, who had been editing since 2009, would have been blocked without any warning for something as petty as actually happened. I really am disturbed by this case; it's very, very unjust, and this editor's feelings have been badly hurt. They are now saying they don't intend to contribute any more. Can anything be done to undo some of this damage? A block expiring does nothing to heal the hurt feelings and justifiable disenchantment with the project. Pesky (talk) 09:29, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Pesky. I do sort of "know" you by seeing your posts around some of the places I lurk; not that my opinion is well thought of far and wide, but I do have respect for your contribution to the project and put you in my personal category of "core dedicated users". I agree with most of what you say here. Having said that, I'm not sure what can be done about hurt feelings. I assure you that I am not unsympathetic and would even consider making a more detailed invitation to the aggrieved party. However, as previously mentioned, I didn't hang the moon :) If I've missed the point of your message or you see some obvious way forward that my cranial density is preventing me from appreciating, please let me know. Thanks for coming here and letting me know of your concern. See ya 'round Tiderolls 12:50, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi again; I've been mulling this over for a couple of days, and have just posted on Jehochman's talk. I'm hoping not to be beaten to an emotional pulp for it. If you consider it appropriate, could you drop a line on the IP's talk along the lines of "you may have been treated a bit too harshly; apologies for any undue upset", or something similar? I think could make a big difference to that editor, who has still not edited since 28 February, their last contributions having been to the SPI page. Pesky (talk) 09:43, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
P.S. I've also contacted everyone else who was involved in the chain of events, and updated Elen (who has been keeping an eye on the WP:V page), and left my own "apology on behalf of The system" at the IP's talk. This guy really went through the mill here, through no real fault of his own. He was accused of socking, then accused of racism, dragged to AN/I, dragged to SPI, blocked for 48 hours, had his (perfectly reasonable under the circumstances) unblock request ignored, and has – quite understandably – been badly upset to the point of saying he doesn't intend to contribute further. His only contributions since then were to the SPI case. A lot of emotional damage was done here. I'm hoping something can be undone. Pesky (talk) 11:03, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

IP Block

The IP has posted a message noting their action was in good faith. They've circumvented the block, being an IP, and I suggest we do one last WP:AGF and drop a warning about future actions and WP:ROPE. As blocking admin, it is of course up to you. CMD (talk) 15:20, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
