  • Coal town guy, I was surprised by this, too! I am currently working on writing articles for the remaining red links on the West Virginia featured lists for state parks (James Rumsey Monument), Attorneys General, and colleges and universities. (I think this is keeping these FLs from being featured on the main page). Once those are all complete and I am back from India later this month, I’ll commence another potential FL for West Virginia so we can make it 7! Cities and remote WV places

P999, thank you so much for your message! I apologize for my late response as I'm just now returning to Wikipedia after a long vacation! I would definitely like to assist with a Potomac River article, and I'd also like to split off the South Branch Potomac River for its own article because it definitely has its own unique history and geology. Hello West Virginian -- This is wonderful news! I think that giving the South Branch Potomac River its own article is an excellent idea. At present, I am working on developing a "Fauna" section for PR; a "Flora" section should follow. Perhaps eventually these two sections may be combined into a "Biota" section? It seems to me that the article is also in need of a "Geology" section and a "Recreation" section. I made the lists of tributaries collapsible, which I think improves the over-all appearance of the article, but an ancillary result was that a few images had to be removed because there was no longer enough text to support them. I have placed these images into a special section at the end of the article so that we can keep them in view and, in at least some cases, put them back into the article as the text expands.   • P999, I am currently tying up some loose ends with a FAC and two GARs. Once I have these taken care of, I can begin committing my time to the Potomac River and a new South Branch Potomac River article. I can definitely add more information on the geology, recreation, and anything else you see fit! Hello West Virginian -- Many thanks for your message. I have spent the past few days working on Fauna; the Fish sub-section proved especially challenging since there were so many lists that had to be compared and combined. Today I did Flora; its components were much more straightforward because I was able to link directly into the Maryland DNR compilations. Perhaps we will want to add some text to each sub-section? Perhaps also we might include one image in each sub-section? Potomac River discussion continued

  • Good morning P999! You have been doing an excellent job expanding the Potomac River article! It will be interesting to see how many potential splinter articles could be created once all the content has been added! (E.g. Biota of the Potomac River, etc.) I am going to start a sandbox for the Geology portion, and will share the link once it’s started. I will be trying to follow the similar formats of featured river articles for this. I’ve already started a sandbox for the South Branch Potomac River, too. I won’t formally publish the SBPR article until it’s done so that it can qualify for DYK. If there is enough content, I can also publish a NBPR article. I’m going to try and add content to all of them as I discover it to avoid duplication. Since the PR article is already so long, we will be able to submit it for DYK once it reaches Good Article status! (If it hasn’t already been a DYK). This is shaping up to be a very busy week for me work wise but I will try my best to begin work related to PR! Would you mind if I went through the current article and did a thorough copy edit and edit of the internal citations and references? Let me know! Hello West_Virginian -- I had been hoping that you might be willing to do a thorough review and copy edit of PR, but was hesitating to ask since you have been so busy lately! I am also very grateful that you will be checking the internal citations and references. I have done minimal editing of the text, having focussed instead on developing the Routemap and Geobox and searching for images. Do you think that we might be able to transfer into a sandbox the section I set up to temporarily hold the "orphaned" images? So good to hear from you, West Virginian! BTW I also sent you an email a while back; believe I found a workaround for the problem referenced therein since then, but would still appreciate your thoughts on the subject. Re Potomac River, thank you for your encouraging words; however, I began to feel very bogged down in the Flora and Fauna sections a few weeks ago and decided to just leave them be until you had time to take a look. Because their current state is bothering me so much, I wonder if you would mind looking at them first, revising what I have written as you may consider appropriate, and suggesting how we might better present them? I don't want to give up any information (perhaps mainly because I like reading those lists and wondering where I can see various species that I have not yet encountered, etc), but I think they need to have text added. Perhaps like I did in the case of "Mammals"? Or, perhaps something radically different. Do you feel at all inspired to undertake this? Because I really developed some kind of a block and know that I will not be able to do any more with those sections, at least for many months to come. Another matter -- but this one is, I fear, far beyond our ability to do anything about -- is the following: I happened to look at the PR article on my iPhone recently and noted that the 'mobile' format makes it appear totally chaotic. I believe that this is because said format causes all templates and lists to be expanded, no matter what their default setting is. I have been very careful to set the default on the routemap and the lists to minimized, but at least on my iPhone, they all are automatically opened the instant the page loads; do wish that the people who program WP's 'mobile' format would do something about this. -- P999 (talk) 11:54, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. With 53 contestants qualifying, the groups for round 2 are slightly smaller than usual, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining users.

Our top scorers in round 1 were:

  • United States Aoba47 led the field with a featured article, 8 good articles and 42 GARs, giving a total of 666 points.
  • Germany FrB.TG , a WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points, gained from a featured article and masses of bonus points.
  • India Ssven2, another WikiCup newcomer, was in third place with 403 points, garnered from a featured article, a featured list, a good article and twelve GARs.
  • United States Ceranthor, India Numerounovedant, Minnesota Carbrera, Netherlands Farang Rak Tham and Romania Cartoon network freak all had over 200 points, but like all the other contestants, now have to start again from scratch. A good achievement was the 193 GARs performed by WikiCup contestants, comparing very favourably with the 54 GAs they achieved.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

WikiCup 2018 May newsletter

The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
  • Republic of Texas Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
  • India Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
  • United States Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
  • San Francisco Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
  • South Carolina Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs

So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.

Controversial reverts should never be marked as minor

In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes or rearrangement of text without modification of content. DrKay, I have been updating and correcting royal and noble ancestry templates. I was not aware that any of my updated links were “controversial reverts.” I apologize for any wrongdoing on my part, and was certainly not aware of any “controversial reverts.” — West Virginian (talk) 23:42, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Almost none of them are controversial, but that particular section has been discussed at length on the talk page (because of the ludicrous suggestion that she was black). In fact, virtually all the talk on that page is about her ancestry, so edits to the section are policed more rigorously than you'd naturally think. DrKay (talk) 16:49, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018 July newsletter

The third round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • South Carolina Courcelles, a first time contestant, with 1756 points, a tally built largely on 27 GAs related to the Olympics
  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three GAs on natural history and astronomy topics
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with a variety of submissions related to transport in the state of Washington

Contestants managed 7 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 120 good articles, 1 good topic, 124 DYK entries, 15 ITN entries, and 132 good article reviews. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 458 GA reviews, in comparison to 244 good articles submitted for review and promoted. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process; several submissions, particularly in abstruse or technical areas, have needed additional work to make them completely verifiable.
