Template:FixBunching On July 2, 2008, a man identified as a Palestinian resident of East Jerusalem named Hussam Duwait, attacked several cars on Jaffa Road in Jerusalem, Israel using a front-end loader, killing three people and wounding at least thirty persons, before police officers shot him dead.[2][3][4] A motive for the attack could not immediately be determined, but police at the scene referred to the incident as a terrorist attack.[5] Media reports of the attack frequently refer to the front-end loader, erroneously, as a "bulldozer".

This attack marks the 2nd incident in 2008 where an Arab from East Jerusalem using his Israeli ID Card freely accessed West Jerusalem to commit acts of terrorism. The first being the Mercaz HaRav massacre in early March 2008.

Details

Preliminary investigations suggest the Caterpillar 966 front-end loader was taken from a nearby construction site on Jaffa Road, where the Jerusalem Light Rail was being built. The perpetrator then drove the vehicle against traffic, before hitting an Egged public bus near the city's Central Bus Station. The impact flipped the bus onto its side, hitting nearby vehicles and pedestrians.[2]

After a policewoman had shot the driver, the vehicle came to a halt but then started again. Police officer Eli Mizrahi and an unnamed off-duty soldier then climbed the cabin and killed Duwait with five shots to the head at point blank range. The off-duty soldier fired three shots first, and after the driver's body slumped to the left, policeman Mizrahi fired two more shots.[2][6] One witness is quoted as saying that Duwait was armed and 'shooting at a police officer'.[7]

Responsibility

Police said the incident was definitely terrorism, emphasizing that the perpetrator, Jabr Duwait, a 32-year-old father of two from East Jerusalem, was carrying an Israeli identity card.[5] He was being hired by a local construction firm for the Jerusalem Light Rail.

"My son never spoke of plans to carry out such an attack, if he had I would have tried to prevent it," Duwait's father, Tayseer told The Media Line as police officers were about to question him.[9]

The Jerusalem terror attack is "a natural response to Israeli aggression", a Hamas spokesman said Wednesday, some two hours after the attack. Nevertheless, he stressed that Hamas did not know who was behind the attack.[10]

The Israeli radio station Kol Yisrael reported that an Israeli-Arab terrorist organization called the Galilee Liberators Brigades (Hebrew: גדודי חופשיי הגליל) claimed responsibility for the attack. The same group also claimed responsibility for the Mercaz HaRav massacre. The claim has thus far been treated with skepticism by the Israeli police and media.
