FC Tampa Bay Rowdies is an American professional soccer team based in Tampa Bay, Florida, United States. Founded in 2008, the team will begin play in USSF D2 Pro League, the second tier of the American Soccer Pyramid, in 2010. The USSF Division 2 is a temporary professional soccer league created by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) in 2010 to last just one season, as a temporary compromise between the feuding United Soccer Leagues (USL) and the North American Soccer League (NASL).
For the 2010 season, FC Tampa Bay will play at George M. Steinbrenner Field, spring training home to the New York Yankees and home to the defending Florida State League champion Tampa Yankees. [1]
The team is named for the former Tampa Bay Rowdies which competed in the old North American Soccer League in the 1970s and 1980s. The new team will use the same green and yellow colors of the former Rowdies, and a predominantly white kit featuring the old team's iconic hoops.
History
The team initially announced that that they would be an expansion member of the USL First Division, the second tier of the American Soccer Pyramid; the news of the expansion was announced on June 18, 2008.[2] However, in November 2009 FC Tampa Bay announced their intent to instead become the co-founders of a new North American Soccer League, which would begin play in 2010.[3] These plans were subsequently superseded by the USSF Division 2 deal.
Logo
According to an official press release, the new team logo is meant to invoke the past through the use of a traditional shield shape, stripes and a traditional soccer ball in the top portion of the shield. The star above the shield represents the North American Soccer League (NASL) Championship won by the original Rowdies in 1975. Additionally, the stripes were worn on the sleeves of the original kit of the Rowdies. The new logo adds a navy border to the color scheme to set the USSF Division 2 team apart from the original NASL team.[4]
