Production

Development

The fourth season of Once Upon a Time was confirmed on May 8, 2014,[3][4][5] this announcement was followed up by the reveal that the first half of the season will air during the autumn of 2014, while the second half will air during the spring of 2015.[6] The second half of the season will reportedly have Maleficent as the main villain.[13][14] Prior to the season premiere, a special aired recapping the previous three seasons, and finished up with the introduction of the Frozen storyline.[42][43] The theme for the season is “Never give up on the people you love”.[44]

Adam Horowitz initially announced that the 2-part episode, "Smash the Mirror", would air at the earlier time of 7/6c and will be two hours long,[45][46] however this was later contradicted by the official Prime Time schedule which stated that it would premiere in its usually spot of 8/7c,[47] the official ABC press release for the episode and the Futon Critic also supported this start time.[30] Horowitz later clarified via Twitter that the extra hour was in addition to the already announced 22 episodes.[45][48] He also confirmed that the winter finale would air on December 14, 2014,[45][48] and later confirmed that the show will return from winter hiatus on March 1, 2015.[42][49]

It has been confirmed that, unlike the Frozen arc, the villains of the second half of season 4 will come from "[Once Upon a Time] mythology" instead of from their respective movies, so their origins will not be how people remember them, in particular, creator Adam Horowitz stated that "[Once] Cruella may have a different backstory than the one that people may remember from the movie".[50]

Casting

After Once Upon a Time in Wonderland was canceled, it was reported that Michael Socha, who played the Knave of Hearts, was in talks to join the main cast of Once Upon a Time as a series regular should the series receive renewal for a fourth season.[51] On April 20, 2014, it was confirmed that should Once Upon a Time be renewed, Socha would join the cast as a regular cast member.[7] On May 8, 2014, the series received its official renewal from ABC, resulting in Socha's hiring.[3] Michael Raymond-James is not returning as a main cast member, since his character Neal Cassidy was killed off after he sacrificed himself to bring back his father.[52] On July 17, 2014, images from the set of Once Upon a Time revealed that Ginnifer Goodwin was returning as Snow White/Mary Margaret Blanchard along with fellow cast members Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, Josh Dallas as Prince Charming/David Nolan, Colin O'Donoghue as Captain Killian "Hook" Jones and Jared S. Gilmore as Henry Mills.[53] Comic Con 2014 also revealed the return of Lana Parrilla as the Evil Queen/Regina Mills[54] and Emilie de Ravin as Belle.[54] Emilie also confirmed this,[55] as well as Robert Carlyle returning as Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold,[55] in an Instagram picture.

On May 12, 2014, it was confirmed that Sean Maguire would return for the role of Robin Hood for the fourth season, as well as Robin's wife, Marian, portrayed by Christie Laing.[56] On July 1, 2014, it was announced that Scott Michael Foster had been cast as Frozen character Kristoff and Elizabeth Lail as Anna.[9] The following day, it was announced Georgina Haig had been cast as Elsa.[8][11] On July 8, 2014, Elizabeth Mitchell was revealed to have been cast in an as of yet, unrevealed role,[10] although showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz revealed that her character would either be an evil Snow Queen more like the one from the original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, or be Elsa's and Anna's mother, who somehow survived the sinking ship depicted in the film.[11] Kitsis and Horowitz have also confirmed that Olaf will not make any appearance, but they had cast a real reindeer as Sven.[11] On July 28, 2014, the role of Prince Hans was revealed to have been given to actor Tyler Jacob Moore while the role of Pabbie was given to John Rhys-Davies.[57] Rhys-Davies reprised the role in the first,[58] sixth[59] and seventh[60] episodes of the season. The third episode, "Rocky Road", revealed that the roles of two of Hans' brothers, Franz and Jurgen, had been given to Nils Hognestad[61] and Marcus Rosner[61] respectively. Moore, Hognestad and Rosner are set to reprise their roles in the tenth episode of the season.[62]

On July 9, 2014, Zap2it reported that Giancarlo Esposito was returning as the Magic Mirror/Sidney Glass in at least the premiere episode of season 4, after being absent due to commitments to the NBC series Revolution, where he starred alongside newly revealed cast member Elizabeth Mitchell.[63] On August 26, Kristin Bauer van Straten was revealed to be returning as Maleficent for the second half of the season.[13][14] It was announced on November 5, 2014 that Victoria Smurfit would be portraying Cruella de Vil in a recurring capacity later on in the season and that hints will be placed in the next few episodes.[14] Another Disney villain is also set to appear in the form of Ursula from The Little Mermaid who will be portrayed by Merrin Dungey,[15][16] after the character was previously portrayed by Yvette Nicole Brown in the season 3 episode, "Ariel".[16] Straten, Smurfit and Dungey all first appeared in the winter finale, "Heroes and Villains",[64] and are collectively called the "Queens of Darkness".[65]

Beverley Elliott, Lee Arenberg, Raphael Sbarge and Keegan Connor Tracy all confirmed through their respective twitters that they would be returning for Season 4 as Widow Lucas/Granny,[66][67] Dreamy/Grumpy/Leroy,[66][68] Jiminy Cricket/Dr. Archie Hopper[69] and Mother Superior/Blue Fairy[70] respectively. Tracy's return has been confirmed to be during the tenth episode, "Fall".[62] Faustino Di Bauda has also been confirmed to return as Sleepy/Walter[66][71] On September 4, it was revealed that Frances O’Connor was cast as Belle's mother, Colette for the sixth episode although appearances later on in the season were also hinted.[72] A new character, Lily, has been cast to Nicole Muñoz,[73] while Sally Pressman has also been given the role of Helga.[60][74]

On October 17, 2014, Rebecca Wisocky was revealed to have been cast as the con-artist Madam Faustina for the tenth episode, "Fall",[75] while a few days later on the 22, David Paul Grove, Gabe Khouth, Michael Coleman, Mig Macario and Jeffrey Kaiser were confirmed to be returning as the seven dwarves.[66] On October 25, 2014, Ginnifer Goodwin revealed that Mary Margaret's and David's son, Neal Nolan, is portrayed by eight different babies, adding: “I used to be like, 'babies look like babies.' And now that I have a baby, I'm like, how does the audience not notice that in every shot, this is a different kid?”[76]

The season's first episode, "A Tale of Two Sisters" saw the return of Jason Burkart as Little John,[58] who reprised his role in the sixth episode,[59] and Raphael Alejandro as Roland[58] who reprised the role in the third[61] and sixth episodes,[59] and introduced Pascale Hutton as the Queen of Arendelle, Anna and Elsa's mother,[77] who will reprise the role in the seventh episode[60] while the second episode, "White Out", introduced Robin Weigert as Bo Peep,[78] and saw the return of Gabrielle Rose as Ruth, Prince Charming's mother.[78] The fourth episode, "The Apprentice", introduced Timothy Webber as the Sorcerer's Apprentice[79] who is also set to reprise his role in the two hour episode "Smash the Mirror",[30] and saw the return of Brad Dourif as the previous Dark One, Zoso.[79] The fifth episode, "Breaking Glass" saw the return of Abby Ross as a teenage Emma,[73] and is also set to make an appearance in the eleventh episode, "Shattered Sight",[80] while the sixth episode, "Family Business" saw the return of Eric Keenleyside as Maurice, Belle's father,[59] and introduced Darcey Johnson as Oaken.[59]

The seventh episode, "The Snow Queen", saw the return of Jessy Schram as Ashley/Cinderella[60] and Sarah Bolger as Aurora,[60] and it also introduced Brighton Sharbino as a younger version of Elizabeth Mitchell's character, Ingrid,[60] Ava Marie Telek as a younger version of Gerda, the Queen of Arendelle,[60] Bailey Herbert as a young Helga,[60] Sally Pressman as Helga,[60] and Jonathan Runyon as a younger Duke of Weselton.[60] The tenth episode, "Fall", saw the return of Charles Mesure as Black Beard.[62]

On December 13, 2014, two new roles were in the process of being cast, the first of which was for a character named Miranda,[20] while the second role has been described as a "recurring role of a king whose crown was hard-won, and the fight to keep it has taken a toll."[81] During a Question and Answer session, Horowitz and Kitsis revealed that the roles for the Sorcerer and the author of Henry's Book had yet to be cast, although[21] the episode "Heroes and Villains" had the characters hinting at the possibility that they were the same person although Horowitz and Kitsis have both stated that the characters are making assumptions, hinting that they may indeed be different characters.[17] During a second Q&A on the December 15, Horowitz confirmed the return of Joanna Garcia Swisher as Ariel.[17] On December 18, 2014, Eion Bailey was confirmed to be returning August Booth/Pinocchio for "multiple Season 4 episodes", starting with episode 15, "Enter the Dragon".[18] It has also been revealed that Ernie Hudson has been cast as Poseidon, who is also Ursula's Father,[19] and Sebastian Roche as King Stefan.[22]
