History
History
The year 1995 marks the genesis of Suzlon. Tulsi Tanti, the founder of the group, came up with the idea while he was managing a 20 employee textile company. . The biggest challenge he faced at that time was the erratic supply and high cost of electricity which offset any profits made by the company. He accidently ventured into Wind energy, while exploring various solutions to this problem. He could foresee an opportunity to leverage Wind energy to ensure stable supply of power for its textile units. The idea of wind turbines took root then and 2 wind turbines were installed in Rajkot, in Gujarat for supplying energy to his business of cold storage and textile mills. But this venture set him thinking of greater use of wind energy and thus was born Suzlon Energy, to cater to the energy requirements of other industries in India. Suzlon adopted a business model wherein clients would be responsible for 25% of the up-front capital investment and Suzlon would arrange the remaining 75% on loan. Initially banks were hesitant to fund loans for this model but by 2008, 40-50 Indian banks were financing wind power projects.
Suzlon's story began in 1995 when founder Tulsi Tanti was managing a 20-employee textile company. Due to the erratic availability of power locally, and its rising costs, the highest business expenditure after the raw materials was electricity. The cost of electricity also offset any profits made by the company.
In 2001, Tanti sold off the textile business, so he could focus on the development of his wind energy business. Suzlon is still actively run by Tulsi Tanti, now in the role of Chairman, Suzlon Group.
After providing electricity for his own company, Tanti realised that other companies in India could also greatly benefit from being sold wind power technology and advised on its use. With the help of some of his friends in Rajkot, he moved into wind energy production as a way to secure the textile company's energy needs, and founded Suzlon Energy. Suzlon adopted a business model wherein clients would be responsible for 25% of the up-front capital investment and Suzlon would arrange the remaining 75% on loan. History

The year 1995 marks the genesis of Suzlon. Tulsi Tanti, the founder of the group, came up with the idea while he was managing a 20 employee textile company. [7]. In 2001, Tanti sold off the textile business, so he could focus on the development of his wind energy business. Suzlon is still actively run by Tulsi Tanti, now in the role of Chairman, Suzlon Group. [8]

One Earth Campus

One Earth campus is Suzlon’s global corporate headquarters spread over 10 acres of land in Hadapsar, Pune, India. The campus was conceived with a business and functional need to bring all business verticals and corporate services under one roof. [9] One Earth campus provides for a 24x7 globally shared service that forms a strategic 'think tank' for the group across all verticals and locations. The campus is the knowledge and support base for global operations. [10] The One Earth Campus also offers a range of economic and environmental benefits like enhanced comfort for its occupants that help improve productivity. The campus saves 30% to 40% in operating cost, leading to 40% energy savings and 30% lesser water consumption. [11]. One of the most important goals of the One Earth project was to establish an efficient water management plan that included measures such as rain water harvesting, and water recycling systems. [12] The buildings also maintain high health and safety standards for its occupants and ensure prompt medical assistance. [13]

Suzlon’s research and development leverages the best technology to create products that deliver high performance and reliability in tough and diverse operating environments. With world class design and R&D experts, and state of art facilities in Germany, India and the Netherlands, Suzlon’s R&D is the perfect balance of global experience and in-depth expertise

Suzlon Foundation

The Suzlon Group endorsed the CSR mission in December 2007, and launched the Suzlon Foundation to lead corporate social responsibility initiatives. With the motto “Powering a Greener Tomorrow”, Suzlon is committed to sustainable development. [14]

Across India, in eight states and two union territories, Suzlon is involved in various CSR activities. Active community participation and sizable contribution in cash and kind indicate that these CSR programs create shared value. [15]. It is a partnership in development, with all stakeholders making their own contributions to enhance natural, financial, social, human and physical resources. [16]

Here are some facts and figures of Suzlon’s CSR campaigns: • Treated over 3,627 Ha of land & planted over 11,09,993 trees • Ensured better education opportunities to 1,35,192 students • Strengthened 3,074 Community Based Organizations (CBO’s) • Lit up homes with more than 2,517 solar lighting systems

Involving employees in such activities is an important part of CSR at Suzlon. They believe that an organization can be responsible only if its employees are involved in the process. Hence, cultivating responsible behavior and citizenship is very significant for them. This helps better integration of CSR perspective in business practices and encourages conscientious individual behavior. [17]
