"Thou shalt not be uncivil".

Good news - for me anyway

Hello DB. My copy of Marketa Lazarová arrived today. When I went to order it I was pleasantly surprised to see that The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey had finally made its way to DVD so I picked it up as well. I have a BBQ to go to tonight so it looks like the weekend will be spent in the Middle Ages :-) BTW I was glad to see A Woman of Paris added to the list. From everything I've read and the documentaries I've seen I sense that Edna had a special place in Chaplin's life. After their romantic relationship ended they stayed friends which was not the case with the other women he became involved with - well until Oona anyway. Enjoy your weekend. MarnetteD|Talk 20:35, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Evening MD. Excellent. I do hope I don't disappoint you with it! There was just something about it for me which ticked all the boxes. It's something I think you'd have to watch several times to fully appreciate. Yes, also saw one of F. W. Murnau's earlier films. Both a treat. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:39, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

All I can say is yowza DB. Not only did it tick all the boxes - It ticked boxes that I didn't know that I had or had forgotten in their entirety. As I just finished watching it I know that it is going to take me awhile to put everything into words. OTOH there are a couple things I can say. First, visually it is stunning a) B&W is so striking and the film would have been less in color b) two days ago I rewatched AK's The Idiot so (even though it is in the 90's here I have a good winter chill going :-) Second, and this may only apply to me, there is something about a watching a film where I don't know any of the actors other performances - it is as though they only inhabit this set of characters. Of course this is a bit shortsighted but it also adds to my initial reaction to this film. I look forward to future viewings of the film because, as you say, my appreciation will grow. That is such a hallmark of our favorite films and directors. MarnetteD|Talk 04:19, 2 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Glad you enjoyed it. The strength for me aside from the cinematography was the music. Soul stirring. I think it was more the combination of the two rather than particularly good acting or screenplay or whatever. At times it gave me chills and stunned me. But they did seem realistic characters, as I say it was like being transported back in a time machine to medieval times, a special viewing experience.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:32, 2 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats! - I just nominated another GA, Schauet doch und sehet, ob irgend ein Schmerz sei, BWV 46, which I would like to see on DYK on 9 August ;) - perhaps I will be bold enough to insert "tsunami aria" by then, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:40, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'm still on a break from reviewing myself for a few weeks though. If I review yours I'll have to do half a dozen others from FA and GA!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:43, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, I found one, and when you get back to reviewing you will have a choice of others, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:55, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Grats! I had peeked at it when I saw you working on it. I really do like your overviews and the general flow of your writing. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 00:12, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers. I could look at photographs of vintage Vegas and read about it all day. I may do some more old Vegas casinos if We hope is up for it. The original Thunderbird Hotel should have its own article. Something like Caesar's Palace though is a core article which I might work on.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:02, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

To Dr. Blofeld, for taking Varanasi to GA status! Keep rocking and continue the good work! — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 06:23, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Ssven2: Cheers Ssven! A core article no doubt. Funny you should mention "keep rocking", I was playing my guitar pretty loudly (yet only 1.5 of 10 on my 100 watt Marshall ;-)) with my looper pedal last night and out of the corner of my eye I noticed some neighbours watching me through the window! Obviously I was a spectacle worth watching/listening to haha! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:32, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What a coincidence, LOL. My next semester has just begun. So far, so good. Won't be able to watch films for a while though. Will continue to do so probably in November this year, when the semester ends. I will continue to edit here though for the time being. — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 06:34, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

For being able to churn out so many Good Articles like a bad case of diarrhoea - I really do wish I had your skill and patience. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:38, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, thanks Ritchie333!! Well, I tend to go through productive phases, other times I can't be arsed, but at the moment I see the need to promote articles to GA!♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:33, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I just choked on my coffee, but thanks for the laugh Ritchie333. I am amazed at how many of these you are able to do Dr. B and only wish that someone would get interested in doing the same for WomeninRed articles. I keep asking for a production line because I do not think that one person can do it all. As you say, it is phases. Congrats on another GA. I nominated Margaret Anderson for DYK. SusunW (talk) 15:39, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@SusunW: If you want to be truly helpful, you could have a look at Draft:Zella Jackson Price and see if there's any way of getting it up to mainspace. Rhonda wrote it and I tried to grab every source I can find, but it still didn't take. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:48, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ritchie333 lemme finish my re-write of Sue Bailey Thurman and I'll take a look. We truly, truly, truly need to get them to rewrite these notability guidelines. They exclude so many women because the reviewers take them way too literally. If I have 10 sources each saying a person is notable, though each sources may only include one line, how does that not meet notability? The way they are written, most editors assume you must have multiple complete articles on the person, which for historic women, that would be a rarity. If I have a web page from her university, a web page from the government of her country, a news article on women's day, a news article on the organization she worked for, none explicitly about her but all reliable sources claiming the woman was the first doctor, lawyer, or even baker, why is that not notable? Aggravates me to no end. SusunW (talk) 15:59, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have Kathleen Andrews on my watchlist, not because I'm developing it (while there's probably more you can say about the first female bus dispatcher in Edmonton, Alberta, it'll be in local sources I can't find) but because I was paranoid somebody would come along and delete it with a rationale of "not enough sources". Or, I was looking up Jade's Crossing, a very well known local and poignant landmark, many news sources over several years, that I recall trying to look up here and discover it didn't even have an article. Or The Mariposa Trust, which AFAIK got speedy deleted three times before somebody (ie: moi) stopped bean counting the sources and used a bit of nous. I need to lie down because I'm feeling fed up. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:08, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ritchie333 WEARESOINAGREEMENT (WASIA) I have no idea even how to propose that they relook at this but add to it the whole no original sources nonsense. I get no original sources by the person involved but please tell me how a passport record or a census record or a university document created at the time of an event would be a less reliable as a source than a newspaper or magazine or book article created years after the fact with incorrect dates????? The guidelines as written leave no room for common sense. SusunW (talk) 16:36, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The original reason for that guideline is because low profile people didn't want personal details like their date of birth exposed. Are you happy to tell everyone in a very public area on the internet how old you are - of course you're not! So we only publish that information when we have evidence that the person involved is happy to share it, or if it's "out in the open" anyway. I'm mentioned it before, but Keith Moon and Elisabeth Sladen did a pretty good job of fooling everybody how old they really were. Anyway, that's why the guideline was in place. Of course, there are situations where it doesn't apply, such as somebody who's been dead for 150 years, for instance, and there's nothing more bloody infuriating than somebody shouting some magical WP incantation of a policy or guideline without explaining what it means or why it applies! Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:42, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@SusunW: Thankyou! Yes, I don't think GA needs a massive amount of work, just fairly adequate and written properly. I find I work best at either GA level or quick stubbing. More often than not now though I'm in the frame of mind that after 14 years, there's certaun core articles on here which really should be GA minimum and that's priority. I find it difficult to mass produce decent start/B class articles like you and Aymatth on a massive range of topics. I'm unlikely to write a start class article on a Mexican feminist or something, but if it was a core article on a Mexican actress or something I might be attracted in getting it to GA. I think Wp:Women should aim to get an article on a woman up to GA status a month alongside the stubbing work. Some of those Argentine actress articles you expanded might be worth it. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:39, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Okay so do Tita 3:) you know I love my rogues. ;) I nominated my first GA on María Teresa Ferrari we'll see how it goes. SusunW (talk) 16:45, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Eeks Susun, I would quickly remove the subst:GAR from the talk page on that one, it's more a C class article. The lede especially doesn't summarise the article.Amelia Bence has potential, we could aim to get that one up to GA, but hold off on nomming before it's ready!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:53, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I am never going to learn how to do it if I don't jump off a cliff and do one. It may just not be my thing, but Montanabw said I should try one. If nothing else, it will be a learning experience. I guess I don't really care which woman you do, I just think it'd be lovely to have a Latina done. SusunW (talk) 17:00, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a "hit and hope" thing though LOL. I guess it takes some time before you have a good idea of what constitutes a good article. For GA Ferrari would need more adequate career coverage, more than just one section. It would need to be highlight the major aspects of her life and career and have a lede which effectively summarises her career. I don't want to deter you but you'd be much better off nomming one of the Argentine actresses you expanded as a first attempt. As you've nommed María Teresa Ferrari now, I'd do my best to further improve in the meantime if I was you!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:04, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Rosiestep: You and Susun could make a hotlist of core women articles you'd like to see brought up to GA status, and each month you could make it a goal to produce one GA together. I'd be happy to help out, especially if it's an actress.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:45, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Ritchie333: Would her having sung at Carnegie Hall pass muster for notability? (She says in her most southern drawl while batting her lashes) [1] I also find an article from 1967, so she was not a flash in the pan. Working on it. SusunW (talk) 19:39, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
