Bajirao Mastani is an Indian historical romance film produced and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film narrates the story of the Maratha warrior Peshwa (Prime Minister) Bajirao I of the Maratha Empire and his second wife Mastani. The film stars Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra plays Bajirao's first wife Kashibai.

The film based on Marathi novel "Rau" by N.S. Inamdar,[3] released on 18 December 2015.[4][5]

Casting

The film was first announced in 2003. Sanjay Leela Bhansali initially wanted to cast Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai (his lead pair from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) for the eponymous roles, but could not cast them together after their highly publicised break-up.[12] In July 2003, there were reports that Bhansali had cast Khan and Kareena Kapoor as the lead pair with Rani Mukerji playing Baji Rao's first wife.[13] During his appearance on season 1 of the popular talk show Koffee with Karan, Bhansali stated that he scrapped the casting of Khan and Kapoor after the pair signed other films together as he wanted to be the first director to showcase their pairing.[14] Bhansali shelved Bajirao Mastani and went on to direct Black (2005), Saawariya (2007), Guzaarish (2010), and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013). Throughout these ten years, media speculation continued about the production and casting of Bajirao Mastani. Several actors were rumoured to be linked to the project including Shahrukh Khan,[15] Ajay Devgn,[16] Hrithik Roshan,[17] Ranveer Singh,[18] Deepika Padukone,[18] and Katrina Kaif.[19]

In July 2014, it was confirmed that Bhansali had revived the project with Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone (the lead pair of Bhansali's Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela) playing the titular roles and Priyanka Chopra playing Bajirao's first wife, Kashibai.[12] Both Singh and Padukone will undergo extensive preparation for their roles. Bhansali has reportedly approached Daksha Sheth to train the pair in Kalaripayattu, an ancient Indian martial art. Sheth will also train Padukone in the dance style of Kathak.[20] Classical Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj has also choreographed a Kathak song for Padukone.[21] Singh will be required to learn Marathi, learn horseback riding, and shave his head for the role.[22] In addition, the role of Baji Rao will require Singh to gain weight to build his physique. In preparation for her role of Kashibai, Chopra took a 15-day coaching course and she will also be undergoing language training in a dialect of Marathi spoken during the time of the ascension of the Peshwas.[23]

In September 2014, it was confirmed that Tanvi Azmi was cast for the role of Bajirao's mother. Other actresses reportedly considered for this role were Shabana Azmi, Dimple Kapadia, and Supriya Pathak.[24] Tanvi has gone completely bald for her role.[25] In November 2014, the actresses for the roles of Bajirao's sisters were finalised with Sukhada Khandkekar cast as Anubai and Anuja Gokhale as Bhiubai.[8] Mahesh Manjrekar has been cast to play Maratha Emperor Chhattrapati Shahu in the film.[10] The film's costumes will be designed by Anju Modi.[26] It was announced in January 2015 that actor Vaibhav Tatwawadi was chosen to play Bajirao's younger brother, Chimaji Appa. Sonal Dighe will be acting as Ranveer Singh's secretary.[9]

Filming

Principal photography started on 23 September 2014 with Singh and Chopra.[6][27] Padukone shot for a crucial scene for two days during the end of December 2014 and resumed shooting in March 2015, after completing work for her other projects.[28] Padukone filming included physically tough scenes such as sword fighting while sporting a 20 kg armour.[29][30] A major portion of the film will be shot in Mumbai's Film City Studios.[31] For the outdoor sequences, Bhansali has finalised Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Wai of Maharashtra.[20][31] The Production designers Sujeet Sawant, Sriram Iyengar, Saloni have designed more than 21 sets including Aaina Mahal and Shaniwar wada. Extensive research and designing have been done to construct massive sets. The promo teaser launched recently shows the grandeur and aesthetically stunning visuals of Peshwa Period achieved by the designers.

Marketing

In August 2015, a special graphic web series titled Blazing Bajirao was launched in which the characters of Peshwa Bajirao, Mastani and Kashibai were represented in an animated format.[32] The producers also planned a video game, Blazing Bajirao - The Game, where players can defeat enemies as Peshwa Bajirao.[33][34][35]

Pre-release revenue

The film made on a budget of 120 crore (US$14 million).The satellite and music rights of the film were sold for 50 crore (US$6.0 million) and 70 crore (US$8.4 million) respectively.[36]

Release

Bajirao Mastani was released on 18 December 2015 in India.[37] The film will be sharing the 5000+ domestic screens with Dilwale in a 40:60 ratio.[38] In the international markets, Bajirao Mastani is expected to release in over 850+ screens with the largest release in China with over 6000 screens later in its run.[39]

Critical reception

Criticism of the film mainly targeted the pacing, with some feeling that the action sequences buried the plot. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the film 4 out of 5 stars, and said, "Bajirao Mastani is a cinematic gem that you just cannot miss. Tremendous performances, deft direction, power-packed screenwriting and dialogue, melodious soundtrack and of course, the lavish mounting -- this film has it all."[40] Subhash K. Jha in his review for Skjbollywoodnews.com, gave the film a positive review, saying, "Close to perfection..this film requires at least 4 viewings. Ranveer's entry ..spectacular. He looks every inch the warrior king..way to go."[41] Reviewing for the International Business Times, Arjun Varma gave the film a 3/5 rating praising the acting performances and the chemistry of Singh's and Padukone's characters.[42]

Surabhi Redkar of Koimoi rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars, and wrote the film is "full of chemistry that is so pure that it is heart-warming to experience it. Watch the film for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s artistic vision and definitely Ranveer’s career-best act." She also praised Chopra and Padukone's performances and the film's cinematography.[43] Conversely, Manjari Saxena of Gulf News rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars, and said that the film "is not much more than a visual spectacle... it seems confused whether it should be a romance or historic film, swerving between Bajirao wanting to be the famous warrior and the eternal lover". He also criticized the pacing. However, he did praise the performances of the actors, visuals, and action sequences.[44]

The music rights are acquired by Eros Music. The film's first song, titled "Gajanana", in the voice of Sukhwinder Singh, was released on Sep 15, 2015. The song was launched at Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi Stadium in Pune in the presence of film's director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone.[46] The second song from the film, titled "Deewani Mastani", and sung by Shreya Ghoshal, was released on October 17, 2015, in a launch event in Delhi.[47] The third song, titled "Pinga", voiced by Ghoshal and Vaishali Made, and picturized on Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, was scheduled to be released in a launch event on November 14, 2015, but it was cancelled due to the November 2015 Paris attacks.[48] It was then officially released online, on ErosNow, on November 15, 2015.[49] The fourth song from the film, titled "Malhari", sung by Vishal Dadlani, and picturized on Singh, was released on November 29, 2015, in a launch event in Bhopal.[50] The song "Albela Sajan" was released on 11 December 2015.[51] The song "Aayat" sung by Arijit Singh was released on 16 December 2015.[52]

On 15 September, the film's first song "Gajanana" was released as an audio single accompanied by a launch event held at Pune, where students gathered and created a human formation of Lord Ganesha. The song was launched on the festive event of Ganesh Chaturthi as Sanjay Leela Bhansali wanted that the promotions should be started by seeking Lord Ganesha's blessings. He also dedicated the song, which was sung by Sukhwinder Singh to Ganesha. A month later after the song's release, another song titled "Deewani Mastani" featuring Deepika Padukone was released at launch events held at Jaipur and New Delhi.
