WWE Raw 25 Years was a television special that was broadcast live on January 22, 2018, airing on USA Network (in the U.S.) as the 25th anniversary of WWE's flagship show Raw.[1][2][3][4][5]

The event was held in two separate venues at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and Manhattan Center in Manhattan. The show featured various Hall of Famers and legends from the past.[6][7][8][9][10][11]

Background

The card consisted of nine matches, including three on the pre-show, that resulted from scripted storylines and had results predetermined by WWE on the Raw brand.[12][13] Storylines were produced on WWE's weekly television shows, Monday Night Raw, and 205 Live, the latter of which is cruiserweight-exclusive.[14] Raw first aired on January 11, 1993, and since became the longest-running weekly episodic program in television history with no reruns.[15] On October 30, 2017 WWE announced that Raw would celebrate its 25 anniversary on January 22, 2018.[16][17]

Dark matches

Before and during the event, there were a series of untelevised matches for the live crowd in attendance. The first match in the Barclays Center was Goldust defeating Curt Hawkins and later show Gran Metalik and Kalisto defeating Gentleman Jack Gallagher and TJP. In the Manhattan Center saw cruiserweight matches Mustafa Ali defeating Lince Dorado and Akira Tozawa and Hideo Itami defeating Drew Gulak and Tony Nese.

The event opened in the Manhattan Center with The Undertaker saying that he defeated many legends and the souls he collected could finally Rest in Peace. In the first match in the Manhattan Center, Bray Wyatt defeated Woken Matt Hardy by executing the Sister Abigail on Hardy. After the match saw the return of Jeff Hardy saying that Wyatt will be classified as obsolete, thus hinting at a possible return of Jeff's Brother Nero character.

Reception

Those attending the part of the event held at the Manhattan Center were disappointed by WWE's planning for the event. The venue in Manhattan was not provided with adequate screens so the attendees could not see what was happening at the Barclays Center and therefore had a lot of downtime. And although WWE made non-televised fights happen so that fans of the legendary building did not get bored, they felt that they were relegated with minor fights, which caused them to shout for reimbursement of tickets. Even the legendary Raw commentators Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler opted to sleep for a while.[18][19]

Aftermath

During the event WWE Cruiserweight Champion Enzo Amore was suspended due to a violation of WWE's zero tolerance policy for matters involving sexual harassment and sexual assault. WWE released a statement indicating he would remain suspended "until the matter [was] resolved."[20] 15 minutes after show ended, Amore was released by WWE and the Cruiserweight championship was vacated.[21][22][23] The following day SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan announced that Amore was not more part of the roster and 205 Live would receive a new on-screen general manager,[24][25][26] which later revealed to be Drake Maverick, previously known as Rockstar Spud in Impact Wrestling. Maverick announced a 16-man tournament to crown a new champion at WrestleMania 34.[27][28]
