== Metric system gone amok? ==
I know some lyrics to a song from the 1960's or 1970's. The range (notes/octaves) is limited, even for Rock. Sounds like early Bob Dylan or Rolling Stones, or (skip a few years) early Yardbird. The song starts; "I've been lookin at the sun, pardon me, I didn't know it can't be done. I've been lookin at the sun, I've been lookin at the sun. So my world is made of paint, pardon me, I didn't know that you're a saint. So my world is made of paint, so my world is made of paint. (Chorus) I'm not listenin to the fools who are makin all the rules. I'm just havin too much fun. Doin what I wanna. Hit and run. Hit and run." <small>—The preceding [[Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages|unsigned]] comment was added by [[User:Ccascade1|Ccascade1]] ([[User talk:Ccascade1|talk]] • [[Special:Contributions/Ccascade1|contribs]]) 00:27, 10 March 2007 (UTC).</small><!-- HagermanBot Auto-Unsigned -->

:Well, there are two Spider-Man cartoonists named John Romita, but I can't find any info about anyone appearing in an "American Ninja" film. [[John Romita Sr.]] was born in 1930, and [[John Romita Jr.]] in 1956, so they would be approx. 55 and 29 years old in 1985 when the movie came out. Does that make sense? I would like to find various violin songs such as :

fur elise ,
There was a made for TV show about a 3 or 4 foot in diameter hole in the ground created by a spacecraft in the back yard (which was full of junk typical of a country red neck's estate). A woman and her brother or boyfriend or step dad found this hole and he left her to guard it while he went to get wench so he could see what was at the bottom. While he was gone she lowered some stuff down on a rope and the creatures at the bottom sent her some other stuff back up. Anyone know the name of this show? I don't think it was an Outer Limits program or a Twilight Zone episode but could have been. (Asked this before but the date isn't in the archive.) flicker

there was a tv series based around a Horse called flicker.

I am trying to find out more about this Horse e.g. sex , size and colour, this is proving to be eluding thanks in advance. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 144.136.212.162 (talk) 01:48, 14 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

My Friend Flicka is the TV / Movie I was looking for but still the info on "The Horse " is not in reach is this a male/femele horse ? anymore info? thanks keep going

"Flicka" is Swedish for "girl" so I imagine the horse was female. This site confirms that it was a pure Arabian mare. She was 900 lb. and chestnut in colour, with white ankles and a white strip down her nose. That site also has some images to give you an idea of how big she was. − Twas Now ( talkcontribse-mail ) 03:57, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

online poker question (bonus dollars)

hi, just started with online poker (devilfish----ultimate bet) and am confused by the concept of bonus dollars. I won a couple of dollars but my bonus dollars keep going down instead of up. can someone clarify?? am i really losing but being topped up? also are these related to "ultimate points" and what is a "raked table" in the online world.

thanks poker players! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 91.105.72.128 (talk) 02:22, 14 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Some of these terms ("ultimate points") sound exclusive to the poker site where you play. Try asking the customer support at that site. − Twas Now ( talkcontribse-mail ) 03:58, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Don't know about UB (I play on Pokerstars), but I imagine the procedure is the same. Generally, each raked hand you play earns you points which you can redeem for goodies. When you have enough points, you get your bonus money (without using up your points). PS releases its bonus all at once, not in little dribs and drabs, but maybe UB does it differently. Clarityfiend 05:50, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
UB doesn't work quite the same way as Stars. When you first deposited, you got some number of bonus dollars. As you play, bonus dollars are converted to real dollars in your regular account balance. Therefore you aren't losing bonus dollars, they're just being converted into real dollars. When your bonus account gets down to zero, you've cleared the bonus (i.e. converted all the bonus dollars into real dollars). To answer your other questions: You earn "ultimate points" for playing on the site. They can be used to buy tshirts, poker books, Harleys, etc. A "raked table" is any ring game (i.e. not a tournament) that charges rake. Dave6 talk 10:03, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For internal links (links to other Wikipedia articles) type [[ before the word, and ]] after the word. For example [[apple]] becomes apple. Make sure it links to an actual article before you save! − Twas Now ( talkcontribse-mail ) 22:53, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Red links aren't the devil. They are good in that they can point out to other editors what articles should probably be created. Also, if an article is created, they automatically turn blue instead of someone having to go around to all the old articles to link terms to what is now a new article. Dismas|(talk) 16:47, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And for external links, it's one bracket, for example [http://www.google.com Link to Google] makes Link to Google. However, some external links shouldn't be added; see Wikipedia:External links for more on this. Dave6 talk 09:14, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for obscure old Japanese anime

I'm trying to find old Japanese anime that I used to watch as a child and frightened me. It was in Mexico, so it probably was broadcast by Televisa, and it was dubbed in Spanish. I don't remember anything about it except that a major plot element was that people had some sort of sickness that could turn them into beast-like creatures, hairy, kinda cavemanish, perhaps. It was in some sort of futuristic setting. It may have even been a Robotech story arch, but I really have no idea! Help? Swap 06:12, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there's quite a few anime like that. For some damn reason, I can't get 3×3 Eyes out of my head though. I can't even remember if that people turning into monsters though. It's probably old enough though. When you say "as a child", how old where you? As in, what year(s) are we talking here?--SeizureDog 08:03, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Music

Does anyone know the name (if there is one) of digitally layering a person's voice? Especially in pop music, several different tracks of an artist's voice are used with the illusion that more than one person is singing. ShadowHalo 08:55, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Overdubbing, though the term doesn't imply that it is done digitally. Clarityfiend 09:03, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome, thanks! ShadowHalo 09:15, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the term, "multi-tracking" is also used, though it, too, embraces non-digital processes.--17:30, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Barrinald

"Doubling up" is commonly used to describe re-recording a second performance of any instument (including vocals) to get a thicker sound. Overdubbing is, strictly speaking, re-recording over parts of a performance to correct mistakes etcetera although the commonest jargon actually used for this is to "do a drop in" as in "She sang that last line a bit flat. S'OK, we'll just do a drop in there." —The preceding unsigned comment was added by EABlair (talkcontribs) 03:14, 18 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Have I gone insane or can anyone else remember a Star Trek computer game whihc must have been released between 1996ish (when I got the Internet) and 2002 ish (when I went to University) which played something like this;

You have a load of characters/ships/acessories which resembled (IIRC) figurines / the trophies in Super Smash Brothers or various Star Trek characters and ships (e.g. Borg Cube, Borg Sphere, Enterprise D, Picard, Riker) from which you picked a selection to take into the game.

The game field was split into three with a kinda home area at the top and bottom for yours or your opponents pieces, and a centre section with one or more planets. Each move you could either bring a new element into play from a holding section or move a character about within the field.

The idea was to control as many planets as possible I think, with each character/figurine having a defence value and a number of control points. It wasn't the most action packed game ever, but seemed to have a lot of interesting strategy associated with what you brought into play and when, and was quite addictive IIRC.

I think I either had a demo/beta version and the company which made the game intended to make money from selling packs of these figures in a manner akin to a collectible card game like Magic or something.

Or have I just gone mad and misremembered a part of my youth (although it seems far too detailed for me to have thought this up) - I can't seem to see it listed within the list of Star Trek computer games.

Many Thanks for any help you may be able to provide. [This question has been cross-posted by myself on the Memory Alpha reference desk].

Thanks, I have looked through most of the games released around the time in question, but it doesn't seem to be listed. --Neo 13:08, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Could it have been based on a card game? The description sounds like that, to me... 惑乱 分からん * \)/ (\ (< \) (2 /) /)/ * 13:47, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds to me a lot like ConQuest Online (you play a member of the Q, purchase collectible tokens (like a collectible card game) and use those to conquer planets. I think it released around 97-98, and didn't last long as far as I remember. Apparantly, it's not even notable enough to get a page on Memory-Alpha, though. ;-) --Maelwys 14:01, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - that was the one I was thinking of - now off to determine if it is still active in any form! --Neo 16:47, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BUY! BUY! BUY! BUY! BUY! BUY! BUY!

Let's say you're an aged avid Beatles fan. Through the years, you purchased genuine, legal copies of:

Now you want to ugrade to Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD. Why can't you trade in your old copies and upgrade to a new format for a nominal polycarbonate plastic and jewel box fee. -- Toytoy 15:46, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For a simple reason: If they don't make money producing the Blu-ray versions and let everyone trade in their old ones, there'd be no incentive to create the Blu-ray versions. However, have you ever heard of Ebay? --Wirbelwindヴィルヴェルヴィント (talk) 19:28, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ringo Starr has repeatedly made jokes about rehashing all their old stuff in new formats to make more money. He isn't serious, obviously, but at least he understands it. Monty Python went so far as to name a compilation CD "The Final Rip-Off". --Kainaw (talk) 19:32, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yellow submarine (Liverpool) is, according to the article, 25 foot long, and 15 foot high, and 25 tons. How many of these has this avid Beatles fan got?!  Sʟυмgυм • т  c  19:41, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • There's a simple solution. Boycott BlueRay. If enough people do it, an 'upgrade' will be completely useless. I'm waiting anyway, I don't want to copy all my videos to Blue Ray only to find out HD-DVD wins the stupid battle. - Mgm|(talk) 11:21, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

James Bond vs. Valerie Plame Wilson

Who is your favourite? Do you thing the later deserves a movie film?

Mr.K. (talk) 16:19, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Krazy Kat is my favorite. Yes, I think the whole Valerie Plame story deserves to be made into a movie, and I hope Warner Bros' version wont be anything like James Bond movies (which I also like). ---Sluzzelin talk 16:24, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

hail hail rock and roll.

i remember watching a rocumentary about Chuck berry years ago, i think it was called (see above)but ain't sure, anyhoo at the end of the programme a camera slowly pans/travels from a 'backyard' as our american cousins call them, over a disused swimming pool, through a couple of rooms, finally focusing on chuck playing a stringed instument, like a square guitar, sitting on his lap - the question(finally is does anyone know the tune that chuck is playing? or how i can find out?, my attempts so far have yielded nada, thanks 195.188.254.82 16:49, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cartoon Character: Name of Dog?

I have searched everywhere for the name of a Cartoon Character Dog, that appeared on TV in the 60's and 70's. (It's not Scooby Doo, or Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy...but I do believe it may have been a Hannah Barbara character. I've had no luck finding this information through the normal sources.

Description: It was portrayed as a relatively small dog. What made him unique, was that everytime he was given a dog biscuit, he would 'wrap his arms around his chest, float up into the air, and say "Mmmmm... Mmmmmm.... Mmmmm...," before floating back down to the ground.

Thanks for any assistance.

Football question? 惑乱 分からん * \)/ (\ (< \) (2 /) /)/ * 10:36, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

yes. sorry i dont know which section of the ref desk it should go to.

Going on their form this season, "Entertainment" doesn't really seem appropriate. However... the article lists the current squad at Leeds United#Current squad. unfortunately, that just divides it into defenders, midfields, etc, so the actual centre back would be guesswork going from that. Clicking on the individual articles suggests that it might be their vice-captain, Shaun Derry, who is listed in his article as a "defensive midfielder". Grutness...wha? 11:26, 17 March 2007 (UTC) (old enough to remember when Jack Charlton was back there).[reply]
Today it would have been Heath and Michalik. If you look on match reports, such as today's , CBs are almost always the 3rd and 4th listed (usually, goalkeepers are first, left and right backs are 2nd and 6th). Defensive midfielders are not centre-backs, although some occasionally play there. I think seeing Leeds struggling in Div 2 may qualify as entertainment for a few people.  Sʟυмgυм • т  c  20:11, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Military Dilbert

Scott Adams consistently claims that Dilbert's name was inspired by a clutzy character from a military comic strip, who demonstrated the wrong ways of doing things by doing them and suffering the consequences. Does anyone know where I could find them? Black Carrot 22:15, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome. You can point me to a website that reproduces, in not quite its entirety, the article that reminded me about this in the first place. How does that in any way advance my goal of actually finding the original Dilbert strips? Black Carrot 00:23, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Louisville Orchestra

From all accounts the Louisville Orchestra was started in 1937.

> However, my great grandfather played in the orchestra much earlier than > that. Were there two Louisville Orchestras? Max Zoeller came to America from Germany with other family members around 1850. From the Louisville Orchestra's website's chronology:
1818 - The first official resident symphony orchestra is founded, by the Society of St Cecilia
I couldn't find names of the older orchestra(s) in Louisville, but today's Louisville Orchestra's continuum stretches back to 1937 when the Louisville Philharmonic Society was founded, and later renamed Louisville Orchestra in 1949.---Sluzzelin talk 02:12, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

John Romita

Was the John Romita appearing in American Ninja the same as the Spiderman cartoonist ? Yours--Inyan 06:03, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there are two Spider-Man cartoonists named John Romita, but I can't find any info about anyone appearing in an "American Ninja" film. John Romita Sr. was born in 1930, and John Romita Jr. in 1956, so they would be approx. 55 and 29 years old in 1985 when the movie came out. TV space program

(Asked this before but the date isn't in the archive.) 71.100.3.92 10:25, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

TV shows showing someone searching the internet

Can a TV show - show someone SEARCHING THE INTERNET?

That is, can I turn on a TV show that as part of the show, shows someone searching the internet and of course, shows the various sites that person is going to? Lawyers I contacted "are not sure"...as it may violate copyright law..or may not?

I submitted a question but did not sign it.

I wanted to know if it is LEGAL or if there is any research on the subject of:

SHOWING SOMEONE SEARCH THE INTERNET ON A TV SHOW.

Wow... one question in four competing formats! Anyway, yes -- it's perfectly legal to show the internet on TV. In practice, though, it's rarely done. Computer screens (well, legitimate things on computer screens) read very poorly on TV, so the relevant information is usually conveyed either by (1) a mockup with giant legible text or (2) Matrix-like technical-looking nonsense on-screen while a character talks about what it means. — Lomn 18:36, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
