"1965 – The steamship SS Yarmouth Castle burned and sunk about 60 miles (97 km) northwest of Nassau, Bahamas, killing about 90 people." - I think 'sunk' should be 'sank'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.197.207.170 (talk) 11:38, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
:"Sank" or "sunk" comes up every few months, so maybe we should have a consensus we can point to. Some dictionaries say the past tense of "sink" is "sank"; others say "sank or sunk". Art LaPella (talk) 16:06, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Re the same blurb, isn't 97 km overly specific as a conversion of "about 60 miles"? 100 km would make a lot more sense. /Coffeeshivers (talk) 19:06, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
:I would imagine that 97km is the metric equivalent of 60 miles, which is why it's used in that context. ::In the article it says "sank", as it should. Shouldn't the OTD follow suit?
::And I agree with coffeeshivers too, about 60 miles is about 100 km. Awien (talk) 19:52, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
:::Sink, sank, sunk: the past tense is sank. also agree with coffeeshivers. Physchim62 (talk) 19:55, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
::::So by the numbers, we have sank: 3 + the article = 4; sunk: 0 + whoever wrote the OTD entry = 1; on the fence: 1; and with the Concise Oxford calling sunk "rarely used", it seems sank wins. Won't somebody please fix it?

Revision as of 21:56, 13 November 2010

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

 • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
 • Offer a correction if possible.
 • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
 • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 20:40 on 19 August 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
 • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
 • Do not use edit fully-protected on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
 • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
 • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
 • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in the summary of today's or tomorrow's featured article

Stratovolcano in Armero tragedy

An omission: I submit that it should be written: " eruption of the stratovolcano Nevado del Ruiz . . . " Marquess (talk) 07:36, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article is about the consequences of one particular eruption, not the volcano itself, so I don't think we need to get into that kind of detail on the MP. If the volcano itself were the TFA, then I would, of course, agree with you. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:25, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Nevado del Ruiz is a stratovolcano; that fact is not noted, and it should be. The rest of the article is clear, and adding one word only clarifies, not diffuses, the content.Marquess (talk) 20:25, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Still a volcano, so... f o x 21:29, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sixteenth Asian Games

I think sixteenth should be capitalized. Marcus Qwertyus 04:47, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's not a proper noun. "Asian Games" is; "Sixteenth Asian Games" (sic) isn't. Strange Passerby (talkcontribs) 05:47, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Googling shows some capitalize, some don't, but most use "16th", which is what is says now. Art LaPella (talk) 06:13, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jal

Change from 100 to 261. Perseus!Talk to me 21:06, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It needs to be sourced in the article. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:17, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
