Q1

To set things rolling, here goes: She was a national swimming champion, a jockey, a Miss India, an actress, and now, a social activist. Who am I talking about?? --Gurubrahma 10:43, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Nafisa Ali GizzaChat © 11:12, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
Nafisa Joseph Shyam (T/C) 11:14, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

It is Nafisa Ali. She was a real jockey, that is, she rode horses. Nafisa Joseph was a video jockey and I doubt if she was a swimming champion. Anyways, we have 2 articles to improve and one DYK fact ready! your go, DaGizza. --Gurubrahma 12:22, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Q2

I think this is easy, but still interesting. Which Indian was considered the "father of surgery?" GizzaChat © 19:43, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Could it be Sushruta by any chance? Nobleeagle (Talk) 22:31, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
Definitely Sushruta, see the 4th para under Surgery#History--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 06:33, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, I'm going to enter the next question although DaGizza hasn't formally said I'm correct yet (because otherwise I may not meet the 24 hour time limit).Nobleeagle (Talk) 07:46, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah it was right. GizzaChat © 08:25, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Sushruta 197.185.110.216 (talk) 11:21, 13 March 2022 (UTC)

Q3

Once again pretty easy, but just to keep things going. During the British rule of India there were a number of princely families. The grandson of one of these Princes is now a popular Bollywood actor. Name the Prince in question (the actor's grandfather). Nobleeagle (Talk) 07:46, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Correct, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi was the father of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (both cricketers), but Saif Ali Khan joined the film industry. To you Tintin...Nobleeagle (Talk) 21:59, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Q4

A fulltoss. Which India city got its name because of the presence of a large number of banyan trees in that area ? PS : If you get the answer right, you need not wait for me. I may not be online over the weekend. Tintin (talk) 12:26, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

To be honest, I did not know this but google helped me - it is Vadodara, or Baroda - WP also says that here. --Gurubrahma 12:34, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
You beat me to it. I did this. :p -- Sundar \talk \contribs 12:36, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Vadodara 197.185.110.216 (talk) 11:23, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
Over to Gurubrahma. Tintin (talk) 12:38, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Q5

Should be easy - this person paid the highest individual income tax in the mid-1990s - apart from also featuring in advertisements that exhorted people to pay income taxes. Who? --Gurubrahma 14:41, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Is it Mithun Chakraborty? thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK 11:39, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Just missed it! Yes, from 1994-1999.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 11:43, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes Deepujoseph, your go. --Gurubrahma 13:26, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Q6

Okay now this might be very easy. But here goes....Which character, according to the Hindu mythology is said to have offered herself/himself as food to a lion in order to prevent it from attacking a cow? thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK 15:08, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Dileepa, ancestor of Rama, as recounted in Kalidasa's Raghuvamsa. --Gurubrahma 15:18, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
I believe that is right. Nobleeagle (Talk) 04:07, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes, definitely. Gurubrahama's turn.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 05:14, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Yup, Gurubrahmas got it right. Your go! thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK 05:50, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Q7

Now is the time to make the quiz a bit tough, that is answers that cannot be easily googled. Which district can claim to have produced the maximum number of Bharat Ratnas, how many of them and who are they? I need answers to all the three parts of the question. --Gurubrahma 09:11, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Allahabad - 3:

That was not the answer I was looking at. I guess we cannot count Purushottam Das Tandon as he is a Punjabi and to the best of my knowledge, was not born in Allahabad. --Gurubrahma 13:42, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

I didn't check out any other sources, but according to the Wikipedia article on Purushottam Das Tandon, he was born in Allahabad.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 15:21, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Is it Ratnagiri District with the following awardees :

That was indeed the answer I was looking at - Ratnagiri District has that info - added by me in my n00b days - I saw it on some website while researching my article on Pandurang Vaman Kane. Allahabad may also be correct, but wasn't the answer I was looking for. Over to you, DeepuJoseph. --Gurubrahma 15:19, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Q8

Which Indian politician was acting PM twice but never became the a Prime Minister? thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK 15:43, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Gulzarilal Nanda--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 15:49, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Since the above answer is definitely correct (per Gulzarilal Nanda and Prime Minister of India and various other sources), I am asking the next question immediately since I have to go to sleep and get ready for 1st day of Class X. I may not be able to ask the question within the 24 hour threshold, so here goes.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 16:05, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes, you are correct. thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK 03:05, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

How many Indians have won the Junior Singles' Event at Wimbledon? Name them.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 16:05, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Three Indians, Ramanathan Krishnan in 1954, his son Ramesh Krishnan in 1979 and Leander Paes in 1990 as per [1]. I am not counting Sania Mirza who won doubles in the girls' event. --Gurubrahma 16:27, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
That would be right, confirmed Here on Wikipedia itself. Nobleeagle (Talk) 22:20, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, I'm so late, but just to confirm, yes, that is correct.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 15:50, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Q10

I believe my answer is correct - so, the next question to keep the quiz going. Again, something that cannot be googled easily - what connects M. S. Swaminathan, Verghese Kurien and Raja Ramanna, the men behind the green, white and nuclear revolutions of India? --Gurubrahma 12:30, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Well I found two connects. Firstly all three of them have won Padma Shri, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan awards. Secondly they were all born in the 1920s. All info from respective pages only.--Raghu 13:34, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
I am amazed - I thought it will be a while before people can get the Padma connect - that was what I was looking for. Hope people will use the Padma categories regularly ;) - over to you, Raghu. --Gurubrahma 15:16, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Q11

This is a type of trivia question. A famous Indian personality was misplaced accidentely by the hospital staff when he was born. This was found by his uncle because he had noticed a deformity (clue can be given later if difficult) in the baby on the first day. Can you name this famous person whose life would have been different but for his uncle.--Raghu 16:59, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Is it Sunil Gavaskar ? thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK 02:56, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

I cant think of any good questions now. So here is an easy one: Name the Indian athlete who lost a medal in an Olympic event by 100th of a second? thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK 06:55, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Pilavullakandi Thekkeparambil Usha (P.T. Usha) in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Nobleeagle (Talk) 07:04, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Q13

Probably won't take much effort to figure out but here goes. Who was the first Non-Congress Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and what party did he represent? Nobleeagle (Talk) 07:51, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Chowdhary Charan Singh, Jansangh in 1967? -- Sundar \talk \contribs 08:37, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Have to admit my source: Yahoo! Search result #10. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 08:39, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
According to my information, only partially correct, gives everyone else a clue I guess. I'll explain why I think it's wrong when the question is answered. Nobleeagle (Talk) 08:53, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Charan Singh has been associated with Bharatiya Lok Dal and Janata Party during various times. I think the answer is Bharatiya Lok Dal, given the time period. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 09:17, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
If it's not Bharatiya Kranti Dal (one of the parties that were merged to form Bharatiya Lok Dal), I give up. :-) -- Sundar \talk \contribs 09:39, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Charan Singh of Bhartiya Lok Dal in 1967. He also served another term from 1970, I think. If it's not him, then the next person was Ram Naresh Yadav of the Janata Party.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 15:33, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay. It was Charan Singh of the Bharatiya Lok Dal in 1967. I'm not sure who gets it though, because although Sundar got it right, he put a strikethrough through the answer and it was also his second guess. Could anyone that is aware of the rules in other quizzes please work this out? Nobleeagle (Talk) 23:06, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
I don't mind Shreshth taking it. But, the article Bharatiya Lok Dal says that the party was formed by a merger of seven parties in 1974. That's why I struck it off and chose one of the seven parties after eliminating some to which I knew he didn't belong. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:47, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
My source was from Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh's talk page which listed Charan Singh as leader of the Bharatiya Lok Dal in 1967. Seeing the reason for the strikeout of your answer I daresay it was my mistake and my source's mistake. So as long as we know that you can have as many guesses as you like. It's yours Sundar :) No hard feelings I hope Shreshth. Nobleeagle (Talk) 06:52, 22 March 2006 (UTC
Not at all. --May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 15:26, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, Nobleeagle. I'll come up with a question tommorrow morning. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 13:57, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Q14

When was the practice of pre-censoring movies introduced in India and by which act? -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:32, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

In 1918, with the cinematograph act. There was another cinematograph act in 1952 which was more detailed. [2] --Gurubrahma 05:48, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
Looks right, and within 16 minutes of the question being asked too. Nobleeagle (Talk) 05:51, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes, you're right. Amazing speed, Gurubrahma! Over to you. (By the way, we need to ensure that this becomes a DYK.) -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:53, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Q15

He is supposed to be a prophet who migrated to Kashmir around 2000 years ago and is believed to be the fifth advent of Buddha in some accounts. Who am I talking about? I want the exact name, btw. --Gurubrahma 09:13, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Q16

Which university is regarded (at least by some) to be the oldest in the world? A hint: It is in India! GizzaChat © 05:31, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Takshashila. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 05:38, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Or Nalanda University, it's disputed on the University page. I can't believe I was about to enter Takshila when I got a message and decided to go and read that instea :). Nobleeagle (Talk) 05:41, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
I was thinking of Takshashila. On the university page, it states that it is about two hundred years older than Nalanda, so Ambuj gets the honours! GizzaChat © 08:22, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Q17

When the Babri Mosque was demolished in 1992, the Government of India asked the Rajputana Rifles to go to Ayodhya and control the situation there. For the first time in history, a regiment refused to follow the government order citing a very strange but valid reason. What was the reason given by Rajputana Rifles for not obeying government's order? (Hints will be provided on request.) -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 11:43, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

A really wild guess - after googling and not coming up with anything substantial - their battle cry was "Raja Ram Chandra ki Jai", that is, "Victory to Lord Rama." --Gurubrahma 12:14, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
That may be strange, but I dunno if it's valid. Hint, please, but only a verrry minor one.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 12:19, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Or maybe they were, in Delhi, busy with Vijay Divas... and couldn't organise in time to travel to Ayodhya. --hydkat 12:22, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Q18

Wow, bull's eye on the last question with a wild guess! The question was brilliant without doubt. Now, time for my question - who can be regarded as India's first rap singer and what is the song? --Gurubrahma 16:22, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

My bet would be on Baba Sehgal. The song should then be Thanda Thanda Paani - Aksi great 16:51, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
That was not what I was looking for. And Baba Sehgal probably wasn't even born by then! --Gurubrahma 16:54, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
There was one song in which Ashok Kumar performed called Railgadi. I don't know if it counts as a rap song, but that's my best guess after Baba Sehgal.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 18:19, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Yup, that was egg-jactly what I was looking for! and you may want to add this to Ashok Kumar, which is badly in need for clean-up. Your turn, Shreshth91!! --Gurubrahma 18:31, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Q19

Which incident occurred following the arrest of the founder of the Naujawan Bharat Sabha (Indian Youth Congress) and one more person?. This incident was followed by a movement started by 2 brothers. Name the movement and the 2 brothers. Answer all 3 parts.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 11:06, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

I'm very sorry, but it seems that I made a mistake and mixed up "founder" with "founding member", and got the question all wrong. What I wanted was Saifuddin Kitchlew's arrest, which was followed by the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre and the Khilafat movement started by brothers Maulana Mohammad Ali and Maulana Shaukat Ali. To make up for lost time, I'm asking a easy question (see below)--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 09:05, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
I am not sure of this.. a) Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt b) Ali Brothers c)Khilafat Movement. I think that the Khilafat Movement was started before the arrest of Bhagat Singh and Dutt.. But then I can think of only one more "brother revolutionaries" apart from Ali brothers - the Bose brothers Sarat and Subhas Chandra Bose.. and I guess they did't do anything together! Clue Please.. SparkPlug 14:16, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
One of the early members of Naujawan Bharat Sabha was Bhagat Singh. It is disputed whether he was the founder, although it is sometimes reported as such. Bhagat Singh was arrested together with Batukeshwar Dutt. The political prisoners, along with Bhagat Singh lead a hunger strike to the death. One of their members died, and three were hung. Bhagat Singh used his trial to make political speeches. I'm going to guess that the movement which followed, to which you refer was the Chittagong movement led by Surjya Sen. I'm going to guess that Nirmal Sen was his brother. (sorry, I can't think of a better guess.) --BostonMA 14:55, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
But what was the incident that occurred after their arrest? --hydkat(ballyhoo back :) 14:58, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
Did Bose and his brother start the Forward Block movement together? --hydkat(talk) 16:06, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, Forward Bloc was started in 1939 and Bhagat Sigh was arrested in 1931. So this is unlikely to be the answer. This q is really tough. The first part is likely to be Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt.--Dwaipayanc 20:12, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
The first is definitely Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt after the Bomb in the Assembly. The incident is, I believe, the Chittagong Armoury Raid. It led to the Chittagong Movement led by Surya Sen and Nirmal Sen. Nobleeagle (Talk) 00:03, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
So, the story seems as follows, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt arrested, the incident following their arrest was the hunger strike, and the movement was the Chittagong armoury raid led by Surya Sen and Nirmal Sen. My query is, what is the link between the hunger strike and the armoury raid? Is there any reference of the two being linked/ the later being influenced by the former. Another thing : is Nirmal Sen brother of Surya Sen ?
Or, the story may be like this: Following the arrest, the incident was the armory raid itself, followed by the "Chittagong Movement"- if something by such a name is recognised by academics. The answer is becoming tougher!--Dwaipayanc 07:28, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Q20

This is a easy one. P.T.Usha is probably most famous for losing out an Olympic track and field Gold medal by a whisker in 1984. Lesser known is the fact that two other athletes from Kerala had also competed in the finals of a track and field event in the same Olympics. Who all? SparkPlug 10:27, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

4X400m women's relay - M. D. Valsamma and Shiny Abraham (now Wilson) were the two other athletes from Kerala in the team. Vandana Rao, a non-Keralite completes the quartet. And too bad that none of these three have articles about them on Wikipedia yet. --Gurubrahma 11:38, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Spot On Gurubrahma ! Just to add to that, in 2004 Athens another Indian 4X400 quartet composed of K M Beenamol, Manjeet Kaur, Rajwinder Kaur and Chitra K Soman also emulated the feat. Your Turn Gurubrahma -- SparkPlug 16:29, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Hope this isn't too hard. The first two are easy, the other two can be called cryptic clues. Hope I am not violating any copyright laws. But probably the use of corporate logos in quizzes can be considered fair use. - Aksi_great 17:25, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

  • Cole porter wrote a song with that title
  • A proposal that became the TV show with that title was originally called Cash Mountain
--BostonMA 17:47, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay in replying. I think I can give it to you. The answer I was looking for (this being a quiz on India) was Kaun Banega Crorepati. You were right with the last 2 clues. Lenovo is the sponsor for the famous "Computerji" on the Indian version (if you have seen the show). Airtel is also a sponsor for KBC2. But that's ok.. I think you were correct. Go ahead and ask the next question. - Aksi_great 11:55, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

The name was "Adwaita".--Dwaipayanc 13:30, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
The baton is yours Hydkat --BostonMA 14:27, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I take that back. I asked for a name, so the winner is SparkPlug --BostonMA 14:28, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
<with a sheepish expression> I forgot about the name, by the time I realised this, it was too late. --hydkat 14:47, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
And I need to read the timestamps more carefully, it looks as though Dwaipayanc had his answer in at 13:30, while SparkPlug was 13:31. After failing to get it right twice, I announce that the winner is Dwaipayanc. --BostonMA 14:51, 27 March 2006 (UTC)Aaaaaahhhhh --BostonMA 14:53, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
No, its sparkplug or some unknown IP address, check the history section... lol --hydkat 14:57, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Okay, let me just resolve this. It's Sparkplug (aka lg1983) who asnwered first. So it's Sparkplug's turn.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 15:15, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
::::::: It was an anon ip which actually belong to Sparkplug. We talked about this photo-finish here and here.--Dwaipayanc 15:19, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Q24

Sorry for the confusion created in the previous question. I hadn't logged on when I answered the question first time and by the time I logged back in and claimed my answer, Dwaipayanc had given his answer and both of us were correct! All seems resolved now, I am going ahead with the next question :

This is kind of cryptic, but definitely guessable. Connect :

  • Anthony Gonsalvez, Anand Babu
  • Subbiah Rajarathinam

SparkPlug 15:23, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

I wanted to get a few things straight here:
  • Anthony Gonsalves refers to the song or the person (musician)?
  • Anand Babu- is he the computer guy?
  • Subbiah Rajarathinam is the Kabaddi player?

May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 16:04, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Clarification
  • Anthony Gonsalves - I am thinking of the song
  • Anand Babu - Since I have written his name with Anthony Gonsalvez, I think it provides a clue. If you still can't figure out I'll give one more clue, later.
  • Yes, Indeed I am thinking of the Kabbadi Player.
SparkPlug 16:26, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
I know a connection between Anthony Gonsaves and Anand Babu, but can only guess at this point that Subbiah Rajarathinam has the same connection. --BostonMA 16:34, 27 March 2006 (UTC) OK, here is my wild guess. Anthony Gonsalves loses his parents in the movie Amar Akbar Anthony. Anand Babu loses his mother in the movie Amar Prem. So my wild wild guess is that Subbiah Rajarathinam lost a parent as a child. --BostonMA 16:48, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Its really cryptic. Wildest of guesses coming! Something related to "Bachelorhood" or, may be ," Raju" !!!--Dwaipayanc 16:41, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Wild guess- I'm thinking of the movie Satte pe Satta starring Amithab Bacchan. Produced in 1990. Rajaratinam's team won the Beijing Asian Games gold that year. They both were given the National award that year? --hydkat 16:42, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Bur, "Satte Pe Satta" is of 1982.--Dwaipayanc 16:48, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Clarification - A Lot More - This question requires a bit of googling to get the answer. I admit this question is really cryptic and probably is unworkable (a relaisation which just sunk in and apologies for that). This I hope is more straightforward.
  • Anthony Gonsalves was a character in (?????), Anand Babu was a character in (?????) - That would provide the connection between them.
  • Subbiah Rajarathinam plays Kabaddi. Its really a connection between Kabbadi and the above statement.

If anybody has any objections, I can put in a new question
SparkPlug 16:51, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Amar Kabaddi --BostonMA 17:02, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
BostonMA has nailed it. Anthony Gonsalves was a character in Amar Akbar Anthony, Anand Babu in Amar Prem. Subbiah Rajarathinam plays Kabbadi, which has the three forms Surjeevani, Gaminee and Amar. Your turn BostonMA. SparkPlug 17:14, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Q25

This is a very obscure question, but it keeps coming to mind so I will present it. At what location is it said that Lord Vishnu made an offering to Lord Siva of an eye? It is possible that several locations claim to be the site of this event, although I am aware of only one. So please provide a reference to your answer. --BostonMA 18:10, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Kashi (Benares) [3] --hydkat 18:33, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Wow that was fast! I guess not so obscure. --BostonMA 18:57, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
And that completes round 1 of this quiz. Lets take a break, till the new round starts. According to the talk page this round is supposed to be archived. Congrats gurubrahma you win! (and thanks for inventing this quiz :) --hydkat 19:48, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
