The 2022–23 season will be the 128th season in the existence of Manchester City Football Club and the club's 21st consecutive season in the top-flight of English football, where they will compete as defending champions. In addition to the league, they will also compete in the FA Community Shield, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

The season will be unusual insofar that the fixture dates of domestic and european competitions are to be changed to accommodate the 2022 FIFA World Cup being played in November and December 2022 in Qatar.

This will be the first season since 2012–13 not to feature former team captain Fernandinho, who left at the end of the previous season to return to Brazil.

Season summary

Pre-season

Manchester City had already resolved their most pressing squad issue before the end of the previous season: when they announced their agreement to recruit a world-class centre-forward in Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. This transfer was confirmed on the 13 June with Haaland due to formally join the first team on the 1 July. He would be joined by Julián Álvarez who would end his short-term loan at River Plate following his transfer in January.

Most early transfer rumours speculated that City were also looking for a specialist left-back to allow João Cancelo to focus on his preferred role on the opposite flank; and a defensive midfielder to backup Rodri and replace the departing Fernandihno. Marc Cucurella from Brighton was rumoured as a target for the former role with Kalvin Phillips (Leeds) and Frankie de Jong (Barcelona) discussed as possible favourite candidates for the latter.[1]

City began pre-season with several key first-team players entering the final years of their contract amidst rumours that they might leave the club for a fee rather than renew. Of these, it seemed the most speculation concerned Gabriel Jesus and his possible transfer to Arsenal, Tottenham or Real Madrid; and Raheem Sterling who was also rumoured to be a Real Madrid target. Both players would, in theory, compete with the incoming Haaland and Alvarez for playing time if they remained.[2]

City's first player sales of the season were the transfer out of Pedro Porro to Sporting Lisbon through a loan-to-buy deal for £7.2mil.[3] and of Gavin Bazunu to Southampton for £12mil initially, up to £15mil after add-ons.[4] Neither player had made a first-team appearance for City.

Pre-season and friendlies

City announced they would travel to the United States for two pre-season friendlies in preparation for the new season, starting with a fixture against Club América on 20 July.[38] The second fixture against Bayern Munich on 23 July was announced a few days later.[39]

The traditional season curtain raiser is played between the previous season's league champions and FA Cup winners. Normally played at Wembley Stadium, this season it will be played at Leicester City's King Power Stadium to avoid clashes with the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 competition.
