On the evening of 15 November 2022, two Russian[1] missiles struck the territory of Poland near the village of Przewodów near the border with Ukraine.[2] The incident occurred during a larger attack on Ukrainian cities and energy facilities.[3][1] It was the first attack striking NATO territory in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.[4][5]
Polish media reported that two people were killed in an explosion[6][7] at a grain plant.[1] Polish officials stated that the cause of the explosion is as of yet unknown, but the Polish Radio ZET station reported that two stray rockets fell on the town, causing the explosion.[2]
The Russian Ministry of Defence denied that Russian missiles struck Poland, denying that “strikes on targets near the Ukrainian-Polish state border were made by Russian means of destruction,” and that wreckage reportedly found at the scene "has nothing to do with Russian weapons[8].”
Reactions
After the strike, Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki called an urgent meeting of a committee for national security and defense affairs.[9][10]
Due to this incident and the closure of the Friendship oil pipeline, the Hungarian government led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also called an emergency meeting with its Defence Council on the same night[11] and Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky had a telephone conversation with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.[12]
Shortly after the alleged strike, the U.S. Department of Defense acknowledged reports that two Russian missiles struck a location inside Poland near its Ukrainian border, though it could not confirm them.[13]
Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Reinsalu responded to the reports by tweeting that Estonia was ready to defend "every inch" of NATO territory.[14]
