Sergei Viktorovich Karakaevru (born 4 June 1961) is a Russian military officer who has served as the Commander of the Strategic Rocket Forces of the Russian Federation since June 22, 2010[1].

Biography

In 1983, he graduated from the 4th Faculty of the Rostov Higher Military Command and Engineering School, named after Chief Marshal of Artillery M.I. Nedelin. In 1994, he graduated from the command department of the F. E. Dzerzhinsky Military Academy. From 1983 to 1986, he was an engineer and senior engineer, deputy commander from 1986 to 1987, and commander of the launch group from 1987 to 1988. From 1988 to 1992, he was the chief of staff of the 320th Missile Regiment, named after the 70th anniversary of Great October Revolution. From 1994 until 1997, he was commander of the 168th Kaluga Missile Regiment. From 2001 until 2006, he was the head of the Second Department of the First Department of the Main Personnel Department of the Russian Federation's Ministry of Defense. He graduated in absentia from the Northwest Academy of Public Service in 2004. From April 2006 to September 2008, he was the commander of the 27th Guards missile unit in the Vitebsk army. In 2009, he graduated with honors from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. On June 22, 2010, President Vladmir Putin appointed him commander of the Russian Federation's Strategic Missile Forces[2]. The military rank of "Colonel General" was bestowed on August 9, 2012.

Sanctions

As a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the United Kingdom[3] and New Zealand[4] imposed sanctions on December 13, 2022, after he was involved in missile attacks on Ukrainian cities. On February 25, 2023, Karakaev was added to the European Union's sanctions list.[5]

He is married and is thought to have a son and a daughter.
