The demo reveals new abilities that involve more complex interaction with the game environment than ''StarCraft''. Terran units known as Reapers can swiftly leap over cliffs, and Protoss Stalkers are capable of short-range teleportation to pursue fleeing enemies. Additionally, new abilities have been extended to structures. The Protoss are able to warp prefabricated units within range of their Pylons, and also possess a unit that acts as a mobile Pylon, providing power to Protoss buildings in the absence of conventionally built Pylons.

The Protoss are able to warp prefabricated units within range of their Pylons, and also possess a unit called the Phasm Prism that acts as a mobile Pylon, providing power to Protoss buildings in the event that its supporting Pylons are destroyed.

Finally, the demo reveals the possibility that there are special units possessing several powerful abilities. One of these units is the Protoss Mothership, which serves as a flying fortress and is capable of strafing ground units with powerful energy beams, creating a time distortion field that can slow down units and stop enemy fire, and open a black hole that can suck in enemy air units. The Mothership is so powerful that the player can only possess one of them, in a similar fashion to Blizzard's ''[[Warcraft III]]'' [[Hero (Warcraft)|Heroes]].
Furthermore, there appear to be a couple of super-units with powerful abilities and capabilities. One of these units is the Protoss Moenergy beams, creating a time distortion field that can slow down units and stop enemy fire, and thership, which serves as a flying fortress and is capable of strafing ground units with powerful open a black hole that can suck in enemy air units. The Mothership is so powerful that the player can only possess one of them at any time.

Thus far, the only official information about new units is in regards to a handful of Protoss units unveiled on the website, but several new Zerg and Terran units (or modified versions of older units) have been observed in the slew of gameplay preview videos and articles following the game's announcement on May 19th.
So far, only several Protoss units have been confirmed in the demo and website, although several Terran and Zerg units were briefly shown.

StarCraft II is a sequel to the popular real-time strategy game StarCraft, announced on May 19, 2007, at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Seoul, South Korea.[3][4] StarCraft II is being developed for concurrent release on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OS X. It has been stated that development on the game began in 2003, shortly after Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. While there is currently no release date, the game development is in the pre-alpha stages [3] and is "very far along and already playable in multiplayer with all three races". Its lead designer is Dustin Browder.

Gameplay

StarCraft II will feature the three races of the original game: Protoss, Terran, and Zerg. It has been announced that these will be the only races in the game.[1][5][6]

Differences from the original StarCraft

StarCraft II retains some units from the original game, such as the Zerg Zergling, Terran Marine and Protoss Zealot. Some of these units have been given new abilities. For example, the Zealot — formerly a slow mêlée unit — now possesses a charge ability that allows them to sprint over short distances to engage ranged units.[7] Due to story events from the previous game, some units have been phased out or replaced. For example, the destruction of the Protoss homeworld of Aiur has prevented the creation of more Dragoons - the transplanted souls of Protoss warriors in exoskeletons - resulting in the remaining Dragoons to be redesigned with different weaponry and a shield that absorbs heavy damage and renamed to "Immortals".[7]

The demo reveals new abilities that involve more complex interaction with the game environment than StarCraft. Terran units known as Reapers can swiftly leap over cliffs, and Protoss Stalkers are capable of short-range teleportation to pursue fleeing enemies. Additionally, new abilities have been extended to structures. The Protoss are able to warp prefabricated units within range of their Pylons, and also possess a unit called the Phasm Prism that acts as a mobile Pylon, providing power to Protoss buildings in the event that its supporting Pylons are destroyed.

Story

StarCraft II will take place four years after StarCraft: Brood War,[8] and will feature the return of notable heroes from the original game, such as Zeratul, Sarah Kerrigan and Jim Raynor.[5] Players will revisit worlds from the original game, such as Char and Braxis, along with new worlds, such as the jungle planet Bel'Shir.[9] The Xel'Naga and Terran Dominion factions will also feature in the game.[8]
