Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia! If you're new to our community, drop us a note here and tell us a little bit about yourself. Most important, we would like to know about your interests, your areas of knowledge, and the sorts of things you'd like to work on here at Wikipedia. That makes it easier for us to help you start editing. We'd also appreciate it if you told us how you found out about Wikipedia.

To add yourself to the list:
  • post a comment,
  • enter your name as the subject/headline (which will make a new header for you in the log), and
  • sign your name at the end of your comment by typing four tildes: ~~~~. (This code makes a link to your user page, which readers can use to welcome you personally if they like).
Your comments will then be added to the bottom of the list.

You may also like to add yourself to other lists, such as the listing in order of arrival, by country, or by skills (such as translation or photography). Finally, if you want a little personal assistance in using or contributing to the site, you might go through one of the Bootcamps or you may wish to be adopted by an experienced editor.

An automatically generated list of new users can be found at Special:Log/Newusers.

Hi I am new here. I am a bit nervous that I will screw up.

Miss Cicatrix

I am a critical thinking South African molecular genetic researcher. I am interested in all forms of biomolecular technology and research. I am proficient in English and scientific writing. However, I have many other interests and would like to be involved in the wiki literature projects (I recently joined the Project Gutenberg distributed proofreading team). I felt that as a regular user of these projects it was time for me to contribute! User:Kierano also played a role in prompting me to finally get involved :-)

While I cannot commit myself to large projects yet, I think I am up to small contributions in my areas of interest as I peruse articles. I may try to clean up the article on Paddington Bear as a start.

Hey! I'm a new Wikipedian... if you read my user page, that was my little sister messing around. I went to get a snack and found her typing in my user page. It's kinda funny though. My real name is Rebecca. I love Justin Timberlake, Tennis, Waffles, Golf, Horses, and the Cayman Islands. I have a few Wikipedian friends: Jimmy's bananooz, Abbopa, Trig trigonometry, and Tsubasa Wings. I'd love to get to know more of you better! LeCrud Jam 22:10, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey guys.

You know the drill: I'm new, I'm scared of breaking secret rules i don't know, etc. If anybody wants to say hey, leave me a message, and if i can figure out how to get to it I'll totally read it.

What's up?

Hi. I'm new (duh.) If any older, wiser Wikipedians want to give me tips, or if anyone wants to say hey, leave me a message. RollingStone122 03:50, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm Tolerant666

I'm (sort of) new to Wikipedia, in that I've been using it for forever but I haven't *actually* started editing until now. I really need to play with Wiki markup in the Sandbox; for now, I'm a little overwhelmed by the complexity of simply making an article, let alone following standards and guidelines.

KudzuLou

I've made significant corrections and other changes to the entry on kudzu to correct misconceptions about how to control or eliminate kudzu. Here's where I'm "coming from".

I graduated from LSU (Baton Rouge) in 1980 with a Ph.D. in physics, worked in the research division of the textile company Milliken & Company in Spartanburg, South Carolina, for 19 years, then retired in 2000. I joined "The Spartanburg Men's Garden Club", and became interested in a club project about kudzu.

A club member discovered that it is unnecessary to dig up the roots of a kudzu plant to kill it. It is only necessary to remove the crown, which sits on top of the root, and is the source of kudzu vines. Cut off the crown, and the roots wither away. This is an important discovery because most people believe that killing kudzu is next to impossible. They think that all roots must be dug up; a considerable feat because roots can weigh hundreds of pounds, and are 10 to 20 feet deep.

So a volunteer project called "The Coalition to Control Kudzu Without Chemicals" was established late in 2004 to make the public aware that it is not hopeless to control or eliminate kudzu. Volunteers began working in urban locations in the city of Spartanburg to eliminate isolated pockets of kudzu "without chemicals" by manually cutting off kudzu crowns. Spartanburg was in past times a major railroad hub in the southeast, which explains the presence of over 1,000 acres of kudzu in the city: The railroad planted kudzu on track embankments to control erosion. With that foothold, it began to spread everywhere.

I joined the Coalition early in 2005, work weekly "in the patch" to remove kudzu, am the webmaster for our website KOKudzu.com, and I am also on the board of directors.

The Coalition has successfully eliminated kudzu from several sites, and is on schedule to fully eliminate it at over 40 other locations within the next two years. The Coalition travels to other locations to educate and train people how to deal with kudzu, runs regularly scheduled training classes for the public, participates in "The Southeast Exotic Pest Plant Council" (SE-EPPC), and communicates with specialists at Clemson University, The U.S. Forest Service, and other organizations.

Our volunteers continue to actively investigate new herbicide-free methods, which are fully documented on our website.

Hi, I've loved wikipedia for a couple years now. I grew up in Chicago, and now live in Tacoma (in the U.S. Pacific Northwest). I hope to contribute useful content about the game of go, which I have been playing and reading about since the mid-1980s. Eventually I may feel qualified to add something about snowboarding or sea kayaking, or content specific to my locale. Other interests are graphic design, math and the other sciences, photography, biodiesel, hiking -- you know, the usual stuff. If you see me committing faux pas, please let me know. [edit] My concern about your username

Hello, About Chitra Ramanthan, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

Concern: Your username appears to have a type of advertisement in its title

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

  • If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it.
  • If the two of us can't agree here, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as asking for a "third opinion", or requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Wikipedia administrators usually abide by agreements reached through this process.
  • You can keep your contributions history under a new username. Visit Wikipedia:Changing username and follow the guidelines there.

Let me reassure you that my writing here means I don't think your username is grossly, blatantly, or obviously inappropriate; such names get reported straight to Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention or blocked on sight. This is more a case where opinions might differ, and it would be good to reach some consensus — either here or at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names. So I look forward to a friendly discussion, and to enjoying your continued participation on Wikipedia. Thank you. Hi, I have just started using wikipedia. I have been readnig through discussions for a few weeks now before I made any changes. Then i started with correcting puncuation and syntax. I still havent doen any realy major edits and have only worked on articles with a B status or lower.

I think I'll like editing comedy articles, music and nature articles. As obviously these are my interests. I have had a go at going through the recently changed pages and editing out some vandalism/typos.

I'm always up for an interesting chat, I like meeting new people and learning about new cultures. I am always keen for new experiences in life as I think life would be pretty mind-numbingly boring with out them! Soulnebula 04:22, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to be of some small service to Wikipedia

As a young girl of 7, I read the World Book Encyclopedia cover to cover in the wee small hours of each morning. Hence, a lifelong passion for Encyclopedic knowledge, no matter what the topic.

Now at 60 with plenty of semi-retired time, I find myself using WIKIPEDIA on a daily basis and it behooves me to begin to contribute in a small way.

Since there isn't a topic of human history, literature, behavior, science, biography, that doesn't hold some interest to me, I look forward to being part of a fascinating project. It's like being a part of the Human Genome Project and this new encyclopediast has a stub or two to offer.

Minnesota Valley Humane Society

The Minnesota Valley Humane Society was founded in 1981 by a small group of compassionate South Metro residents to care for the growing number of stray and homeless animals in the area. It had no facility other than volunteers' homes.

Then, thanks to a series of volunteer-driven fundraising events, many years of hard work and a benefactor, MVHS was able to purchase the vacant former Burnsville city hall, police station and fire department building located in Burnsville on 1313 Highway 13 East. The Sheltor's doors opened in that facility in 1991.

Since then, the Minnesota Valley Humane Society has become the third largest animal humane organization in the Twin Cities area and one of the emerging leaders in the national animal welfare movement. It is now the "neighborhood" companion animal shelter for residents of the communities of Burnsville, Eagan, Apple Valley, Lakeville and Bloomington, and the shelter of choice for people within a radius averaging nearly 25 miles.

This service area reaches parts of western St. Paul, South Minneapolis, Edina, Richfield, Prior Lake, Shakopee, Savage, Jordan, Hastings, Rosemount and Northfield. Many customers and volunteers, even though they live much closer to other animal sheltors, say it is MVHS's reputiation and character that draw to it.

One key distinction of MVHS is that it helps any companion animal in need. Veterinary care and/or rehabilitation is provided, and every animal suitable for adoption finds a home. Of the 5,000 humane society organizations in the United States, MVHS is one of only a small number that can make this claim. It has achieved on of the highest adoption rates of all humane organizations in the nation. Since just 1991 to June 3rd of 2006 MVHS has completed 40,000 adoptions, and accurate records of adoption numbers are not available from 1981 to 1991.

The Mission of the Minnesota Valley Humane Society

"To prevent and alleviate animal suffering through shelter, adoption, education, collaboration and community outreach; and to strengthen the relationships between people and companion animals."

I am based in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney NSW Australia.

I have eclectic interests including living out my faith in the Lord Jesus, helping others learn more about him and to base their faith on the historical Jesus, rather than mythology. Hence my interest in supporting the Christian Church and foreign missions, and in particular Langham Partnership International.

Professionally I am a natural resource scientist with a quantitative statistical training. Hence my interest in information quality and data quality and the International Association for Information and Data Quality.

Personally I am interested in railways, hence my interest in the Valley Heights Locomotive Depot Heritage Museum.

Hi all! I've been using Wikipedia extensively for the last two years or so. This place is the starting point for pretty much anything I need to look up online. I think the whole idea of having an open source encyclopedia is awesome. This truly is a perfect example of the collaborative power of the world at large. I firmly believe that this is, at this point of time, the closest we have come to the idea of compiling the net sum of human knowledge and sharing it.

There is so much I've managed to learn on this site... I think it's time to give something back to the community. I've started making my edits and creating pages and hope to keep doing so, circumstances willing, for a long time. I have a wide variety of interests, so this place should keep me very busy indeed.

Please feel free to get in touch with me for anything.

hi all.

i am passionately interested in the non-dual doctrine of ajata, which means 'not [or never] created', and was most recently and powerfully espoused by Sri Ramana Maharshi who lived in south India until his death in 1950.

i am interested in communicating with others who may be familiar with this point of view, especially if they have experienced it directly. i am fairly low-tech when it comes to computers, but if it proves to be easy to do, i'd like to collaborate with someone on an artical on this topic.

thanks for reading my intro,

How does a language die?

First, I am not an expert on this subject. It just caught my curiosity. I am a high school teacher and I teach two subjects in High school related to the Social Sciences.
The Sumerians were the first community of Homo Sapiens Sapiens who created the first human civilization in a place which Alexander the Great called Mesopotamia, now Iraq.
They were the first people who invented the first system of writing called Cuneiform and they existed in that area at around 5000 B.C. We know that the cuneiform is a combination of elongated triangles or wedges, unfortunately we do not know how this ancient system of writing is read.
Of course, All the other ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia are now long gone. With the Sumerians, the Akkadians, the Babylonians, the Hittites who experts say were the first people who invented or discoverd Iron, then the Chaldeans and the Persians at the end of the line.
An expert told me that the Latin Language, that which was used in ancient Rome was also already dead and the people who use it are also now gone. In place of the Latin

emerged the Italian, the Spanish, the Portuguese and the other Languages which are being used by present day people who evolved from the vicinity of the area once controlled by the Roman empire.

How do languages evolve and how do they die?
Is it possible to see or speak of a common global language one time in the future?

What language would that be? Would humans still be humans when that time comes?

Hi, I'm Dragonlady7, I'm a total douche bag whore with no life. no1 likes me and the 1 of the reasons is b/c i have herpes spread around my yeast infection by my pussy. I douche every night and pretend to have sex but no1 wants to fuck me themselves. I'm very white and my rib bones show and i hate all the mother fucking hot porn star chicks who are so hot. I'm so much better than them!! WAY COOLER AND SEXYIER! im a hot chick :) YAY! My particular areas of interest include pre-Medieval Europe, especially the British Isles and Scandinavia, from the Paleolithic on up to the fall of the Roman empire. I am also really into dinosaurs, though that's something I've been less well-read on since, well, puberty. (When I was a toddler I was pretty much a leading world expert on woolly mammoths, but that was a while ago, and of course I'm speaking relatively.)

I've studied Spanish, Gaelic, Latin (Classical only), and Medieval Welsh, but am not fluent in any of them.

I also skate on a local roller derby team under the moniker B-17 (named for the WWII bomber), so I may have something to contribute to that area, as roller derby becomes more widely interesting.

I don't know what I can contribute to Wikipedia, but now I have an account, just in case I ever find myself with the time to do anything with it. :)

Hopefully, I will get major/minor edit flags set correctly. Also, just started my own wiki for my own personal genealogical data. Seems to be a great use for the technology.

Hello

I suppose I will make this short and sweet..by my understanding -)

I would like to start with how I came to discover Wikipedia.com.

I have no idea!

Two ideas come to mind that might answer it.

1. I was tinkering with Linux distros. I think Ubuntu was the copy in, or perhaps knoppix live.

2. I had just had a spiritual awakening, story on my revelation, and experienced a random event.

I don't know much about Wikipedia..yet. I like the vast amount of knowledge it has given me.

Hi, my username is eddiehu. I'm an Actuary, living in Southern California, Anaheim, Orange County to be exact.

My main interest is working on a Software Engineering website, founded by my wife and a colleague of hers, both of whom are on the Computer Science faculty of a local university. My wife has coauthored a book on Software Engineering which will be published this September and the website will build upon this book. I have been involved with several software projects in my work, which have enhanced my interest in Software Engineering.

I am impressed by the software tools tables in the Wikipedia article "Comparison of revision control software". Who are the primary editors and contributors, and how did you get so much software tool specific information? Were questionaires sent to the software vendors?

These tables are very useful, as I have been told by several software developers. I would like to help create similar tables for other types of software tools, such as Requirements Analysis and Static Analysis.

Sincerely,

eddiehu,

Eddiehu 02:37, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a technical type in the process of changing careers to life-sciences, specifically regenerative medicine, of which Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy is a subset. Coming from a non-life-science background means that I am coming to this as a layman, with the purpose of developing SECONDARY RESEARCH, assessing the voluminous primary research being produced at such a rate that it isn't integrated into practical applications, often for decades. I've used wikipedia often in the past, but recently saw it's founder in an interview, and realized I'd better take some wiki-responsibility in the area that I am focusing on, as I become more knowledgeable, and if and when I find useful contributions that can be made.

Thirty years ago in college I combined courses in computer science (Compiler Theory, Theory of Language, Artificial Intelligence) with philosopy (Dr. Diamondopolous, dean of Cornell dept of philosophy taught an overview of ancient Greeks) to arrive at a vague but romantic theory of collective computer-mediate intelligence, that the ARPA net was forming a system for problem-solving in answer to the collective threat posed to humankind by new technologies (nuclear, biological) that cannot be resolved otherwise. In other words, a collective known as "mankind" was seeing that it's hope for survival was networking.

It still appears to be the case. My worst fear is biological warfare. I'm not in a position to help in that regard at the moment. My other focus is on the disease of aging. Family events have directed me instead to neuroregeneration, specifically treating brain injury. Certain therapies appear promising, such as stem cell and hyperbaric oxygen.

I am partner in a Hyperbaric Oxygen clinic in Sacramento, California, treating both conventional (wounds, carbon monoxide poisoning, necrosis, plastic surgery) and non-conventional indications, such as RSD, stroke, traumatic brain injury, anoxic brain injury, cerebral palsy, and lymes disease. Hello. I joined 28th August, 2007.

I live in South Australia, Australia, (used to live in Alice Springs, as said on my user page).

I like reading books, posting on several internet forums I belong to, watching House, M.D., and of course, love cats :)

One of my favourite movies is Dead Poets Society, and already after watching it three times in one week, (no kidding *grins*), I have written poetry, started a piece of fanfiction, and started a fanvideo.

I don't know much of the projects that are worked on on Wikipedia, but I did join so I could edit articles if I felt I could contribute more to this online encyclopedia.

I found out about Wikipedia, most probably through a search engine, also most possibly through reading journal articles.

Hi, I'm an occasional editor. I have created a few articles, updated some here and there when I see typos or factual errors. In some of the articles I created, I'm afraid I'm guilty of what is called "original research". That is, I will add material that I personally witnessed or that is widely known and not disputed in the Science Fiction fan community. I'm not real big on controversy, so I've tended to stay away from the more contentious pages, even when I think I might have something to contribute. Maybe someday when I have more time...Bgoldnyxnet 18:29, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My experience is in researching and teaching politics (the state, social movements), political economy, US and state tax policy, immigration, inequality, social mobility, health care, the Fair Trade movement, and environmental justice (so far focusing on nuclear waste siting); so these are the main areas in which I expect I might contribute to Wikipedia. I often approach these topics with comparative (cross-national and historical) research, and my primary geographic specialty areas are the U.S. and Sweden, and secondarily the EU, Latin America, and Canada. As well, I might contribute to entries on some social science research methods (interview, participant-observation, quantitative, archival), and critical theory, feminist theory, and Marxist theory. I really appreciate the public-spiritedness of Wikipedia, and my goals here are to learn how to edit and use Wikipedia with more technical proficiency, and, especially because my research experience tends to involve controversial topics, to learn how to avoid unproductive exchanges without submitting to bullying. I've been vaguely familiar with Wikipedia for a while; but I find that many of my college students start with Wikipedia, so I started taking an interest in what it was they were starting with. Now if I can only get them to follow the citations in Wikipedia, instead of just citing Wikipedia! Blanche Poubelle 18:11, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Introducing myself

My actual name is Tony Isaacs, and I am a natural health researcher and author of books and articles about natural health including the e-book "Cancer's Natural Enemy", which has sold in over 15 countries and is featured on prominent natural and alternative health websites, and the popular article 'Modern Medicine versus Nature in Treating Cancer". I also have a website in progress for baby boomers and others wishing to live longer, healthier and happier lives (The Best Years in Life) and I serve as a featured writer and consultant to the Utopia Silver company and their Silver Bulletin e-Newsmagazine. I am currently working on a natural health book project due for publication next year.

In 2005, I helped a multi-agency government probe expose a fake cancer drug scheme which resulted in the indictment and of four co-defendants (see http://www.tbyil.com/mystory.htm) and the operation being discontinued. I also assisted in exposing a string of fake medicine websites promoting fake cures for Cancer, the flu, migraine headaches and other illnesses that led to a three part feature of the week special on Fox News and action by the FDA in shutting down the bogus operations.

At the popular CureZone website (one of the two most popular natural health websites and forums) I have my own forum "Ask Tony Isaacs". I am also the owner/moderator of the Yahoo Health Group "Oleandersoup", and I am a regular contributor to Curezone, CancerCompass, the Jon Barron blog and the Dr. Mercola blogsite, and others as well.

I believe that mainstream medicine is unbeatable when it comes to physical trauma and broken or damaged body parts; however, when the same method of treating only the parts where the symptoms of underlying problems (such as tumors) manifest themselves, it uses a failed approach - as witnessed by over a half century of increasing incidences of cancer and cancer deaths despite constant promises of a cure or breakthrough being right around the corner. I am also no fan of the 15,000 plus FDA approved medications, 95% of which have side effects that often lead to other drugs or worse in a never ending cycle. It is a great model for profits, but a horrible one for humanity.

Many will disagree with me, and that is to be expected since we and our doctors have been taught that only approved drugs are real medicine, despite mankind's 6000 years of success in treating the whole body and using nutrition and natural plants to beat and ward off illness. For those who think only what we create or synthesize or isolate in a lab (the only patentable, and thus profitable forms) are superior to what nature has provided and what we have adapted alongside for eons, I ask: exactly when did nature become a quack?

Live long, live healthy, live happy!

Hey all. Though I having been editing a few pages for a few years now, I didn't know how to do it via my account. I would just hit the edit tab and edit away. Wikipedia can only blame themelves for being so user friendly :-) But it really is amazing how wikipedia as revolutionalized our notion of encyclopedias by leveraging technology and tapping into the global community of experts (often) to build a wonderful and useful body of information. Notice how the wikipedia article is often the first or second in relevancy in a google search! Thanks, wikipedia! Hrannar 15:12, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Phi Chi Delta (ΦΧΔ)

Hi, I'm Phi Chi Delta (Romanized form of ΦΧΔ for those of you unfamiliar with Greek characters). I've been watching Wiki for a while, and I have increasingly been using it as a reference over the last year and a half, occasionally putting in a comment on articles or an edit here or there, and I decided that since I haunt this place so much it was high time I joined up. I have an interest in Japanese tokusatsu and some anime and manga, I follow Power Rangers and its related American adaptations of toku, I have a general enjoyment of things that transform (not just Transformers) and I have a mild interest in LEGO Technic models. Beyond that I enjoy some aspects of pop culture, so I hope to see some of you around somewhere. Phi Chi Delta 19:28, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

hello to every one on Wikipedia, we are paul and mandy winder from kent in u.k, in 2002 we introduced the Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs to the uk, at present we are the only breeders in uk, we have had articles in dogs today and other dog mags regarding the czech wolfdogs, we have worked with wolfdogs and wolves for nearly 10 years, our main interests are our two boys Kallum and Connor and our wolfdogs, we want to educate people in uk on the czech wolfdogs, we have web site www.ukwolfdogs.com and we have a set number of weekends every year for members of the public to visit and see our wolfdogs, you can learn a lot in a few hours, you get to see the wolfdogs and to have hands on experience with them, you can also take photos to share with your friends,we are at present working hard to try and get this breed recognised by the kennel club and to be removed from the dangerous wild animal act, we will answer any questions on the breed and can be contacted via our web site, thank you for your time best regards paul and mandyCzechwolf 22:59, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DigiReign

Hello All,

DigiReign is a company started in 2003 by a team of like minded I.T graduates. One of our focuses is on developing software such as what wikipedia runs on and various other server site content management software.

We are based in Africa, Namibia, but our clientelle and affiliates are spread all over the world. Our business definitions are growing daily as investors have started showing interest in our current and pending projects such as affordable web hosting for third world countries and smaller enterprises all over the world.

DigiReign wishes to contribute extensively to wikipedia's Information Technology (I.T) knowledge base. Our moto is "Making I.T Easy" as we are involved in what you might think of as "gearing technology towards the user" instead of gearing users to fit in with technology. Thus our research and projects are based on user ease of use and economics without compromising the advancement of technology.

We do not differ too much from your regular I.T company but we have the edge that we put our clients first and what we offer them second i.e, We only offer them a solution if we can change it to fit their needs, and not expecting them to fit their needs in our available solutions.

Stefan vd Walt

Hi Wikipedia community!

I'm a second-year (2007) Mechanical Engineering student at the North West University at Potchefstroom, South Africa. I play violin and piano at an intermediate level and compose fairly advanced music. I also play cricket for our local army's cricket club. My interests are: Music, history, religion, sport (obviously South African, not American sport).

I was born in Klerksdorp, North West, on 6 February 1987. After a few severe asthma attacks in my early childhood, I started playing rugby (1994) and cricket (1996). After I played cricket for North West (1998), and for Potchefstroom (1999-2000), I focused on my studies and passed my matric diploma with 6 distinctions out of 6 subjects, at an aggregate of 86% (straight A's). I received my grade 7 UNISA violin certificate in 2005, and obtained a grade 5 UNISA certificate in theory of music in 2004.

I finished 19th nationally and 3rd provincially (in North West) in the 2005 SAASTA National Science Olimpiad.

I have 3 sisters, all of them older than me, and 2 dogs.--Stefan vd Walt 15:17, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
