The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (located at Hauz Khas) (formerly College of Engineering & Technology Delhi), commonly known as IIT-Delhi or IIT-D, is a major college of engineering in Delhi, India. It forms a part of the league along with other IITs in India: the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee.

History

The institute was established as College of Engineering & Technology, Delhi on August 21, 1961. Its foundation stone was laid by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and was inaugurated by Prof. Humayun Kabir, then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs.

After less than two years of existence, Parliament of India amended Institutes of Technology Act, and upgraded the institute as Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The IIT Delhi main building was formally opened by Dr. Zakir Hussain, the then President of India, on March 2, 1968.

IIT Delhi

Campus

IIT Delhi is located in Hauz Khas, South Delhi. The longitudinal campus of 320 acres [1] is surrounded by the beautiful Hauz Khas area and monuments such as the Qutub Minar. The campus is also close to other educational institutions such as the Jawaharlal Nehru University. The inside of the campus resembles a well planned city with gardens, lawns, residential complexes and wide clean roads. The campus has its own water supply and backup electricity supply along with shopping complexes to cater to the daily needs of residents.

The overall IIT-D campus is divided into four main zones:

  • Student Residential Zone
  • Faculty and Staff Residential Zone
  • Student Recreational Area, that includes the Student Activity Center (SAC), football stadium, cricket ground, basketball courts, hockey field, lawn tennis courts.
  • Academic Zone that includes department offices, lecture theaters, libraries and workshops.

The student residential zone is divided into two main sectors --one for men's hostels and another for women's hostels.

Hostels

There are, in total, 11 hostels (9 for men and 2 for women). There are also apartments for married students. All the hostels ( Known as Houses) are named after various mountain ranges in India --Shivalik, Aravali, Himadri, Jwalamukhi, Karakoram, Kailash, Kumaon, Nilgiri, Satpura, Vindhyachal and Zanskar. The residential apartments are named after ancient Indian universities --Taxila and Nalanda.

Each hostel has a capacity of around 400 students though some hostels can house 600 students[citation needed]. However the women's hostels have a much smaller capacity. Each hostel has its own mess, a common room where residents can watch television and read magazine and newspapers and a visiting room where residents can receive their guests. In addition, each hostel has its own computer room facility, although its use has declined severely in past few years because increasingly, students now own personal computers in their rooms. All the hostel rooms are provided with an internet connection, a facility which has caused much debate among the faculty of the institute over the allegation that students spend much of their time on web-surfing and LAN gaming instead of completing their assignments and projects. No such facility is although provided in the residential apartments and their residents use the facilities of an assigned hostel.

Ragging at IIT Delhi

Ragging has alwasys been a serious problem at IIT Delhi. It has caused the deaths and suicides of several students.

The most notable ragging case took place in August 2003 when a first year student Prakash Rajpurohit(of electrical engineering stream) fled(ran away) from IIT Delhi due to severe ragging. His father later registered a police complaint at the Hauz Khas police station. This later led to the arrest of four accused third year students. Later Rajpurohit returned to IIT Delhi after his safety was assured by the police."ragging at IIT". {{cite web}}: Cite has empty unknown parameter: |1= (help)</ref> "ragging at IIT leads to expulsion". {{cite web}}: Cite has empty unknown parameter: |1= (help)</ref> "Rajpurohit returns". {{cite web}}: Cite has empty unknown parameter: |1= (help)</ref> "IIT criminals expelled". {{cite web}}: Cite has empty unknown parameter: |1= (help)</ref>

Student Activity Center

The Student Activity Center or SAC is a part of the Student Recreation Zone in IIT Delhi. The SAC is mainly intended for extracurricular activities of the students. The SAC consists of a gymnasium, swimming pool, a pool room, three squash courts, two table tennis rooms, a music room, a fine arts room and a meeting room which is commonly used to organize quizzing and debating events. The SAC also consists of an Open Air Theater in which concerts of various kinds are hosted. Students can also use the radio broadcast facility in the SAC although its use has declined over the years.

Departments and Centers

IIT Delhi has 13 departments, 11 multi-disciplinary centers, and 2 schools of excellence. Together they offer around 700 courses every semester.[2]

Departments

IIT Delhi has 13 departments. A department usually focuses on a single engineering or science discipline. Each department has its own administration structure with the Head of the Department (HoD) at the top of it. The HoD heads the department for a period of two years after which a new head is appointed. Each department offers a program (at the undergraduate or post-graduate level), some departments such as Mechanical Engineering Department, offer two or more undergraduate level programs and some departments collaborate with each other to offer a joint program. An example of the latter is the M.Tech in Optical Communications program which is offered by the Department of Physics and Department of Electrical Engineering.

The academic departments in IIT Delhi include the following:

  1. Applied Mechanics
  2. Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology
  3. Chemical Engineering
  4. Chemistry
  5. Civil Engineering
  6. Computer Science & Engineering
  7. Electrical Engineering
  8. Department of Humanities & Social Science
  9. Management Studies
  10. Mathematics
  11. Mechanical Engineering
  12. Physics
  13. Textile Technology

Inter-disciplinary centers

An inter-disciplinary center defers from a department in the fact that it deals with an overlap of two or more disciplines of engineering or science. Similar to the departments the centers also offer programs though they offer these courses only at the post-graduation level. The following multi-disciplinary centers are located in IIT Delhi:

  1. Centre for Applied Research in Electronics (CARE)
  2. Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (CAS)
  3. Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME)
  4. Computer Services Centre (CSC)
  5. Centre for Energy Studies (CES)
  6. Educational Technology Services Centre (ETSC)
  7. Industrial Tribology, Machine Dynamics & Maintenance Engineering (ITMMEC)
  8. Instrument Design Development Centre (IDDC)
  9. Centre for Polymer Science & Engineering (CPSE)
  10. Centre for Rural Development & Technology (CRDT)
  11. National Resource Centre for Value Education in Engineering (NRCVEE)

Schools of excellence

A school of excellence is an externally funded (either from an alumnus or an organization) school functioning as a part of the institute. There are two such schools in IIT Delhi which are:

  1. Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology and Management
  2. Amar Nath & Shashi Khosla School of Information Technology

Academic Programmes

IIT Delhi, like all other Indian Institutes of Technology, is best known for its undergraduate program that include the Bachelor of Technology program , the Dual Degree Bachelor-cum-Master of Technology program and an Integrated Master of Technology Program. It also offers postgraduate level programs like Master of Technology, Master of Science, Master of Science (Research), Master of Business Administration, Master of Design (Industrial Design). Finally it also offers a Ph.D. program. The admission criteria for all these programs is different at the entry level. Throughout its history IIT Delhi has produced outstanding engineers and scientists through these programs.
