Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures is a video game developed by Traveller's Tales and published by LucasArts.[6] The game allows players to recreate moments (albeit more humorously) from the first three Indiana Jones films. It features the same drop in/out co-operative play mode as seen in the Lego Star Wars video games, although it is restricted to local console play. The game was released on June 3, 2008 in the United States and Canada, and June 6, 2008 in Europe. A downloadable demo for Windows was made available on May 13, 2008.

Like Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, new moves include clinging onto branches during a jump using Indy's whip.[7] As a promotion, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga features Indy as an unlockable playable character. [8]

Development

The game, like the Lego Indiana Jones theme, does not contain any references to Nazism, simply calling Indy's enemies Germans and removing the Swastika. It is unknown what will be changed for German versions of the game.

It was initially reported that the game would allow up to four players in co-operative mode,[9] but this later turned out to be a miscommunication. While four characters may be visible on the screen, only two can be controlled by players. The creators of this game have said that the game incorporates character phobias; for example, if Indiana Jones sees a snake, Willie sees bugs (the giant tarantulas don't count), or Henry Jones Senior sees rodents, they will be stunned until the animals are gone.

Gameplay

The game follows the storylines from the original Indiana Jones films: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Like Lego Star Wars, the objective of the levels is to get to the end, collecting Lego studs to earn the True Adventurer title (like True Jedi from Lego Star Wars) along the way. Other goals of the levels is to find 10 treasure chests and the red package. Free Play mode allows players to change characters during the level, and roam around trying to find the secret items.

Each character featured in the game has his/her own unique ability, such as Satipo being able to dig things from the ground whereas other characters cannot and female characters like Elsa Schneider being able to double jump unlike male characters. Willie Scott is also able to break glass by screaming, and Thuggee characters can find secret passages. Also, certain characters like Henry Jones, Sr., Rene Belloq, and Walter Donovan can solve hieroglyph puzzles to either progress through Story mode or find secret areas in Free Play. As with Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones allows players to customize characters and make their own creation like Belloq Jones or Colonel Toht. [10]

Barnett College serves as the hub for all the missions. A new feature not seen in the Lego Star Wars series allows the player to interact with objects in their environment (e.g. bottles, swords and guns). Similar to Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, as well as The Complete Saga, players can build and ride vehicles (e.g. In the level "The Hunt for Sir Richard", players are able to hop on a boat in Venice, and ride an elephant in the "Pankot Secrets" level from The Temple of Doom).

Notable scenes have been recreated from the movies, such as the iconic boulder escape and the fight on the rope bridge, as well as Walter Donovan choosing the wrong Holy Grail.[citation needed]

To replace minikits that appear in the Lego Star Wars games, LucasArts has put in treasure chests. There are 10 chests in each level and if you collect them all, an unlocked secret will be waiting at Barnett College. There is also a hidden post card in each level. Some levels contain buried bonuses to help find the missing treasure chest. There is also a red parcel that first has to be found then picked up and inserted in a red post slot (to replace the Power Bricks from Lego Star Wars II and Complete Saga).

There is an artifact room for all the postcards the player has collected, with a special prize for players who have collected all postcards.

According to the Lego Indiana Jones strategy guide, Han Solo will be a special unlockable character for free play, and can be unlocked by finding the following Star Wars characters in various levels: Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C-3PO. Finding these five minifigures unlocks Han Solo as a playable character. Also, Boba Fett, Santa Claus and Dancing Girl 2 are playable characters for the Free Play mode if the "Secret Characters" extra is purchased. Unfortunately, St. Nick is only playable in the "Into The Mountains" level, and Dancing Girl 2 is only playable in the "Shanghai Showdown" level.

Han Solo is a hidden unlockable character obtained by finding cut scenes with various Star Wars characters. These cut scenes are the only ones that cannot be rewatched at the Theater in the College.

Reception

  • IGN gave the game an 8/10 for the the Nintendo DS, XBOX 360, PS3, PS2 and the Wii[11][12] and 7.7/10 for the PSP[13]. which is about the same as the Lego Star Wars games.
  • X-Play gave it a 4 out of 5, saying that it had everything an Indy fan could want, but it's not as fun as Lego Star Wars[14].

Skills and Indy's College

Skills

  • Indy's character carries a whip, which helps cross dangerous chasms.
  • Specific characters can use their ability or attack to blow down shiny LEGO obstacles.
  • Players can safely get past a guard wearing a hat from a defeated German, or when playing as a German in Free Play mode.

Indy's College

  • The Library allows the player to buy extra characters for Free Play Mode.
  • Every artifact found during gameplay can be stored in the Display Room which can be used to unlock new stages in the game.
  • Indy's classroom lets the player enter cheat codes on the chalk board to unlock extras.
