Agyness Deyn (born Laura Hollins[1] on 16 February, 1983[2]) is an English model. In 2008, Deyn was hailed as "the fashion industry's next great supermodel" and has been called an "ambassador of British youth culture."[3]

Deyn is from Failsworth in Greater Manchester.[4][5] She is the second of three children. Her mother Lorraine is a nurse. She attended All Saints RC High School and Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School and Sixth Form in Waterfoot, Rossendale. Deyn's working life started serving part-time aged 13, at a fish and chip shop in Ramsbottom. In 1999, she won the Rossendale Free Press "Face of '99" competition, aged just 16.[6] She left home for London, working in a burger joint during the day and a bar at night but she admits: “I tried to make cocktails but it didn’t quite work.”[7] During this time she says she was also at college in Hull, studying drama and music. She was signed up by Models 1 when she visited the agency, slammed down a portfolio and refused to leave until she was signed.

Career

One of her regular customers in the chip shop was close friend Henry Holland, designer and creator of the House of Holland rhyming slogan T-shirts. She is now the face of the company. Deyn has appeared on the cover of Vogue Italia twice—the November 2006 issue and the September 2007 issue. Both covers were photographed by fashion photographer Steven Meisel.

In the May 2007 issue of American Vogue, she was featured on the cover with fellow models Doutzen Kroes, Caroline Trentini, Raquel Zimmermann, Sasha Pivovarova, Jessica Stam, Coco Rocha, Hilary Rhoda, Chanel Iman, and Lily Donaldson as the new crop of supermodels.

She was also on the cover of the June 2007 issue of UK Vogue and June 2008, as well as the cover of the September 2007 Observer Woman supplement and covers of The Sunday Times Style, Pop, Grazia, Time Style & Life and numerous other international publications.

Deyn has been called the next Kate Moss.[2][7]

She has appeared in advertisements for Anna Sui, Blugirl by Blumarine, Burberry, Cacharel, John Galliano, Gianfranco Ferrè, Giorgio Armani, Mulberry, Paul Smith, and Vivienne Westwood.

Deyn won the "Model of the Year" award at the British Fashion Awards 2007.[8]

She is currently the face of the new fragrance The Beat by Burberry (appearing in both print and television advertising), Gold by Giles Deacon at New Look replacing Drew Barrymore, Ma Dame by Jean Paul Gautier fragrance and House of Holland.

Deyn was the guest editor of i-D magazine's May 2008 edition. The issue is devoted to the model and includes articles written by her, an interview and the model interviewing such stars as Vivienne Westwood.

In 2008, Rootstein Mannequins unveiled a Mannequin cast in Deyn's image to be used in Zara stores worldwide.

On June 23 2008, The Daily Mirror reported that Deyn will star in the 2008 Christmas special of Doctor Who. Deyn has denied it[9] and the BBC has not confirmed the story.

She has recently replaced Angelina Jolie as the main face of the Japanese Cosmetics giant Shiseido.

Personal life

Deyn dated Josh Hubbard of rock band The Paddingtons for four years.[3] She has recently been linked to Albert Hammond Jr of rock band The Strokes.

Deyn provides vocals for the single Who by Five O'Clock Heroes and features in the video. The single was poorly received by NME, giving it only a 2/10.[10]

She was a member of a band called Lucky Knitwear[11] who have now separated, but is rumoured to have formed another called "Gene Jacket" along with friends Jackson Pollis and Alanna Masterson.

Deyn now lives in New York City.[12]
