Template:Big Brother housemates Big Brother 9 in 2008 is the ninth series of the British reality television series Big Brother currently airing on Channel 4 and E4. The series was launched on 5 June 2008, and it is due to run for 13 weeks until 5 September 2008.[1] This series started later than normal. It is rumoured that this was so that it did not clash with Britain's Got Talent, which was being aired on ITV during May.[2] Auditions were held from 21 November 2007 to 25 January 2008.
Broadcasts
The highlights shows have moved back from the usual 9pm timeslot to 10pm for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We will also see the return of the Saturday highlights shows, which were abandoned for Big Brother 8. Thursday's, Saturday's and Sunday's highlight shows are shown at 9pm, with an edited repeat showing the following morning at 9am. There are also weekly eviction shows hosted by Davina McCall[3] where housemates are eliminated from the show by the public vote. These eviction shows are usually on a Friday night starting at 9:00 pm till 10:00pm, following that there is a half an hour break before it returns at 10:30pm for the interview of the evictee. This lasts until 11:00. For the first time since Big Brother 4 all of Davina's interactions with the house will take place in a studio to stop the crowd chants from influencing the housemates.
Live streaming on E4 of events in the house, known as Big Brother: Direct From The House, will be reduced because of the decision that E4 Music will continue during the series' run rather than taking a break until the series is over. For the first time in the show's history, there will be no live web stream.[4]
The series is accompanied with the shows Big Brother's Big Mouth, Big Brother's Little Brother and Diary Room Uncut.[5] Zezi Ifore and George Lamb have replaced Dermot O' Leary as the host of Big Brother's Little Brother[6] whilst Big Brother's Big Mouth is hosted by a different guest host each week, beginning with Jack Whitehall. Chris Moyles took over for the first full week inside the Big Brother House.[7]
The weekly podcast made by the housemates in BB8 has been axed for BB9, with a 60 minute radio show Big Brother's Big Ears as its replacement. Like the podcast, it will be available for download on the Channel 4 website and is to be hosted by Iain Lee and Gemma Cairney. It will air twice a week on a Tuesday and Friday (after the Live Eviction) at 11:30pm.
Logo
The official "eye" logo was revealed on 12 May 2008, on the official Big Brother website. On 15 May the eye started its televised comeback with clips interspersed throughout the breaks, being first broadcast during the break of Come Dine With Me. 10 days before the Thursday a countdown began that featured the number of days left to wait in the new eye style. These adverts aired everyday until June 5th. Each Big Brother show shares the same logo but with a different coloured shard to reflect the show; Big Brother's Big Mouth is green, Big Brother Live and Diary Room Uncut are red, Big Brother's Little Brother is orange and Big Brother's Big Ears is purple.
House
As with all Big Brother series since Big Brother 2002, the House is located in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, just north of London, and has been completely rebuilt with a new look for the 2008 series. The first images of the House were released in late May and showed the kitchen, living area, bathroom, one of the two bedrooms, and parts of the garden.[8] The initial set of pictures revealed a lavish, Romanesque bathroom and a red kitchen fitted with triangular furniture and wall slats facing inwards, The bedroom shown contains only eight beds surrounded by lockers and the garden was enlarged with vibrant colours and an ashtray in which housemates may smoke.[8] The dining table had only eight seats when first shown to the public; it was later shown during the launch that there was a second adjoining table.
On 4 June 2008, only one day before the launch of the series, Channel 4 released images of the luxury bedroom and for the first time before the launch show in the programme's history, the Diary Room.[9] The luxury bedroom is accessed via the garden and contains eight double beds with an oval wardrobe built into the back.[9] The Diary Room is in between the two sets of stairs by which housemates enter and exit the House (they join together at the top).[9] This means that the housemates must exit the House through the main doorway to enter the Diary Room;[8] however, the Diary Room button that the housemates use to notify Big Brother of their intent to go to the Diary Room is located next to the main door inside the House.[9] Also, outside the bathroom are tokens, which housemates must buy from the shopping list and give them to Big Brother if they want to use hot water or get rewards, etc. The tokens are not returned afterwards. When the house was split into Heaven and Hell, the garden had to be modified, with a new outside bathroom in "hell" and the seating area in heaven was located as the smoking area.
Other areas in the House include, for the first time, a jail for housemates who break the rules.[10] Located in a wall of the garden, the jail has a door whick locks automatically when housemates enter and is exposed to the elements but does have bars so that housemates cannot escape. On launch night, Davina McCall revealed that there is also a solitary confinement space in the House; it is accessed via the Diary Room. It was used for the karaoke part of the Japanese task.
Early in the morning of Day 32 (6 July 2008), the Big Brother house was evacuated because of a bomb scare. All housemates were removed for their own safety while Hertfordshire Police carried out a thorough search of the premises at around 1:15am. The scare was eventually declared a hoax and the housemates returned and the show resumed. The live feed was cut during the evacuation and search and didn't resume until 4:00am. [11]
House split
On Day 37, just after Mario was evicted, Davina announced that over the weekend, housemates will elect Head of House, who would be in control the whole house. It was also revealed that the house would be split in two, with one side being 'heaven' and the other 'hell'.
On Day 38, Big Brother asked the housemates to choose between them 3 candidates for Head of House. Dale, Darnell and Luke were chosen and began their campaigns to become the 'Head of House.' This included delivering short manifesto speeches. All housemates voted, with the balloting and results completed by Day 39. It was also announced that the Head of House would be immune from nomination or eviction during the week they held the position.
On Day 39 Big Brother announced the election results. Dale received 3 votes, Luke 2 and Darnell 9. Darnell was therefore elected to be the first Head of House.
As Head of House, on Day 39 Darnell had to choose 6 people to live in 'heaven' with him. The rest of the housemates would go to 'hell'. The house was split into heaven and hell and only heavenly housemates could use the luxury bedroom and the luxury bathroom and hellish housemates must use the bedroom and the shower outside. Only hellish housemates can use the kitchen therefore hellish housemates must cook food for themselves and heavenly housemates. Darnell chose Maysoon, Rex, Mohammed, Dale, Kat and Rachel to be heavenly with him, leaving Luke, Bex, Sara, Belinda, Lisa, Michael and Stuart as hellish housemates.
On Day 45 Big Brother announced that Darnell's reign as head of house was over and a task would be set for a new housemate to become head of house. Housemates had to again choose 3 candidates to run for the position and they chose Dale, Maysoon and Rebecca. They then had to compete in a competition where all three had to stay on the hanging tyres in the garden for the longest. Rebecca dropped off first, then Maysoon followed eight hours later leaving Dale to win and become the new Head of House.
Head of House
In the middle of this series it was announced that for the first time ever in the UK there will a Head of House, the person who is HoH is so for one week. They make decisions for the house, such as when tokens are used and most of the time who lives in Heaven and who lives in Hell. The HoH is responsible for doing the shopping list and deciding who does what in the shopping task. The HoH is immune from being nominated for the week they are HoH, but they can still nominate.
- In week 6 housemates elected their Head of House. Dale, Luke and Darnell stood for election.
- In week 7 three housemates were chosen to compete for Head of House in a competition. They had to stay on a tyre in the air for the longest amount of time to win HoH.
- During the Head of House task in week 8, Big Brother called all housemates individually to the diary room, and gave each eight chili peppers to eat. Each chili pepper was assigned a certain number of points. The housemate that scored the most points by eating the peppers would win the title of Head of House.

Housemates
On Day 1, the original sixteen housemates entered the Big Brother House.[12] The seventeenth housemate, Stuart, entered the House on Day 16 as a replacement for Alexandra since she was ejected on Day 14.[13] For the first time since Big Brother 5, a second housemate, Dennis, was ejected on Day 23.[14] Sara, Maysoon and Belinda entered the house on Day 30.[15]

Controversy
Within the first week of the series, media watchdog Ofcom and Channel 4 had collectively received over 433[80] complaints about alleged bullying from housemate Alexandra, after an argument broke out between her and the other housemates regarding oven chips.[81] Channel 4 defended its housemate selection, claiming that the production team were closely watching the housemates as they normally do to ensure the safety of the housemates.[82] The broadcaster also noted that Alexandra had been warned that her behaviour could be deemed threatening.[82] On Day 14 she was ejected from the house after apparently threatening to have housemates who nominated her for eviction dealt with by her "gangster friends".[83][84]
Early in the morning on Day 23, a major argument began when Rex smudged a piece of pizza on Jennifer's winning drawing of Stuart from the life drawing task earlier in the week.[35] Although she accepted Rex's apology Jennifer became increasingly agitated and upset, attracting a number of housemates to the luxury bedroom. Upon hearing about the incident, fellow housemates Dale and Stuart were visibly enraged and demanded Rex apologise, which he had already done.[35] Shortly after apologising, Stuart's opinion that it was done out of "spite" led to Mohamed's comment of "it's just a painting"[85]. This caused Rebecca to confront Mohamed about his involvement in the argument, and eventually Dennis to say "f**k off" several times before appearing to spit in his face. Dennis claimed however that no spit had actually left his mouth and hit Mohamed.[86] The live feed of the House was then cut at this point, but most of the argument, its build-up and repercussions were included in the highlights the following night.[35][86] On Day 23, Dennis was ejected from the house due to his actions, which were deemed as unacceptable behaviour by Big Brother.

Template:Fnb As Alexandra was ejected from the house on Day 14, the eviction that was to take place on Day 16 was cancelled.[30]At the time lines were closed, Alex had attracted 87% of votes to evict.
Template:Fnb Stuart was exempt from the nomination process in Week 3 as he was a new housemate; he couldn't nominate or be nominated.
Template:Fnb On Day 25, Luke discussed nominations. Therefore, the next day, Big Brother punished him by sending him to jail, meaning he could not nominate. However, he used a "Get Out of Jail Free" card - one of Big Brother's Ever Changing Special Prizes - to get out of jail. He was then allowed to nominate.
Template:Fnb Belinda, Maysoon and Sara were exempt from the nomination process in Week 5. As new housemates they could not nominate or be nominated.
Template:Fnb As Darnell was Head of House he was immune from nomination/eviction for Week 6. Hell Housemates had to peel potatoes in order to nominate.

Ratings
All ratings are taken from BARB, a consortium that announces viewing figures that are considered "official," that is, take into account not only overnight figures but also recordings. BARB figures are usually released about a week after each episode; however, percentages are from overnight sources. Week 1 includes the launch week, which consists only of a Thursday and Friday show.
