Jurong East MRT Station (NS1/EW24) is an above-ground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station that is part of the North South Line and the East West Line in Singapore, and serves as an interchange station between the two lines. It is located in the eastern portion of the town of Jurong, serving Jurong East New Town and the commercial centre of the upcoming Jurong Gateway precinct in the Jurong Lake District.[1]

On the North South MRT Line, it is the first station for south-bound trains and the last station for north-bound trains. On the East West MRT Line, it is between the Chinese Garden and the Clementi MRT stations. During the morning and evening peak periods, there will be trains departing from Ulu Pandan Depot to arrive at the middle platform of the station to travel towards Marina Bay. During peak periods, some trains at the middle platform will terminate at Yew Tee and Ang Mo Kio, when the MRT service is about to end for the day, trains at the middle platform will terminate at Ang Mo Kio and Toa Payoh instead.

Jurong East MRT Station was one of the many stations was built in the past above ground with no platform screen doors to prevent commuters from falling into the train tracks. It is announced that Jurong East MRT Station will be retrofitted with platform screen door in 2009.[2]

A new platform and a new track will be built to serve the North South Line to hasten the traffic boarding and alighting to and from the North South Line trains.[3] Construction will start in 2009 and will be ready by 2012. When it is completed, the waiting time for commuters using the North South Line during peak hours will be reduced from 4 to 2 minutes.

Incidents

Bomb hoax

On February 4, 2005, a 29-year old man, Mak Hoy Meng went up to an SMRT employee at this station and gave him two handwritten notes that declared there was a bomb at one of the stations.[4]

The restaurant supervisor told Mr Yeow Meng Chai that he saw a man drop the notes and even described the fellow in detail, down to the brand of the bag he was carrying. But under questioning by the police, he admitted he had written them himself and there were no bombs. His story came apart when his description differed in later versions. By then, police officers had searched extensively for the man. However, trains were not stopped.

On March 10, 2005, he pleaded guilty under the United Nations (Anti-Terrorism Measures) Regulations to trying to hoax Mr Yeow about a bomb on February 4 2005 at 8 pm, and was jailed for 2 1/2 years.

He admitted that at the time he tried to fool Mr Yeow, he was disgruntled with the police and society in general, because he had been charged with theft and was out on bail. The theft charge - stealing $50 from a restaurant was considered during sentencing.

Escalator Incident

A man was injured when he fell through a gap between the escalator and staircase at the station on the morning of July 6 2007. The police said he fell onto the concourse of the first floor of the station at about 10 am. The man, who is in his early 50s, suffered head injuries and was warded at the National University Hospital.
