Sweden will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. Sveriges Television (SVT) will use the traditional festival Melodifestivalen format to choose the Swedish participant in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009.[1][2].

Melodifestivalen 2009

Melodifestivalen, the Swedish national final, will choose who Sweden's entrant in the Eurovision Song Contest will be. SVT set a deadline of 23 September 2008 for interested singers to send in their songs, after which a jury picked 28 to compete in Melodifestivalen. The 28 songs and their composers were to be revealed in late October or early November.[2][3] When the deadline for songs approached, a record number of 3440 songs were submitted, six more than in 2007.[4]

There will be a few rule changes implemented in Melodifestivalen 2009. Instead of the top two songs qualifying to the final with the third and fourth placed songs fighting in the second chance round, a "knock-out" system will be implemented. The top four songs will compete against each other, with the 1st place song competing against the 4th place song and the 2nd place song competing against the 3rd placed song. The winners of these rounds will qualify for the final, with the remaining two songs being sent to the second chance round.[5][6]

A further change to the format is the introduction of an international jury. Not only will this jury have a vote in the final alongside the 11 regional juries and the televote, but it will also be charged with the task of selecting one song from the 22 songs which did not qualify for the Grand Final to join the 10 finalists as a wildcard, thus bringing the total number of songs in the Final to 11.[5][6]

The number of participants on-stage will also be raised to 8, two more above the EBU limit for Eurovision. Pre-recorded backing vocals will also be permitted.[5][6]

The four semi-finals will take place on 7, 14, 21, and 28 February with the second chance being held on 7 March and the final on 14 March.[7][8] Melodifestivalen 2009 will be hosted by comedian Petra Mede.[9][10]

Song list

The first eight singers competing in Melodifestivalen were revealed on 18 November, during a press conference by SVT.[12][13] The names included previous Melodifestivalen contestants Alcazar, BWO, Måns Zelmerlöw and Sarah Dawn Finer, as well as newcomers to Melodifestivalen Emilia and Jennifer Brown. Lasse Lindh and Caroline af Ugglas will also make a return to the contest.[14][15]

The next seven artists to compete in the contest were revealed at another press conference on 25 November.[16] The Scotts, however, were revealed to be one of the submitted artists to Melodifestivalen 2009 before the press conference, and will compete with the song "Jag tror på oss".[17] The seven new artists entering Melodifestivalen are Mikael Rickfors, H.E.A.T., Next 3, Jonathan Fagerlund, Rigo & The Topaz Sound feat. Red Fox, former Fame Factory contestant Maja Gullstrand and Molly Sandén, who came third for Sweden in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2006.[18][19]

The third group of competing artists in Melodifestivalen were revealed on 2 December at yet another press conference held by SVT.[20] The artists included Shirley Clamp, Amy Diamond, Velvet, Sofia Berntsson, Agnes and sisters Lili & Susie.[21][22]

Five more artists were set to be revealed on 9 December 2008. The day before it was rumoured that the Norwegian entry for the 2008 contest, Maria Haukaas Storeng, would be competing in the contest. However, being co-host of the Norwegian national final, Melodi Grand Prix, the only possible way she could participate in Melodifestivlane would be in the fourth and final semi-final.[23][24] The following day it was confirmed by SVT that she would participate in Melodifestivalen, performing a duet with another former Eurovision and Melodifestivalen participant, Anna Sahlene, who represented Estonia at the 2002 contest.[25][26]

Four other artists were confirmed by SVT to be participating in this year's Melodifestivalen, Susanne Alfvengren, Thorleifs, Nina Söderquist and popular Swedish country band Cookies 'n Beans.[25][26]

In previous years, the wildcard entries to Melodifestivalen were announced after all submitted artists to SVT were announced. For Melodifestivalen 2009, however, this was changed and the names of the wildcard entries will be released along with the other artists. The first wildcard was revealed live on SVT's morning show, 'Good Morning Sweden', on 19 November. The producer of Melodifestivalen Christer Björkman, along with Jennifer Brown and Måns Zelmerlöw revealed Swedish-Finnish musician Markoolio to be the first wildcard entry, singing the song "Kärlekssång från mig".[27][28] The second wildcard was revealed on 26 November, on SVT's 'Culture News'.[29] The wilcard was revealed to be opera singer Malena Ernman with "La voix", composed and written by Fredrik Kempe.[30] Marie Serneholt, made famous by A*Teens, was announced as the third wildcard by SVT on 3 December. She will sing the song "Disconnect Me", written by Peter Boström and Tony Nilsson.[31][32]

The line-up for Melodifestivalen was completed on 16 December. The final wildcard will be boyband E.M.D., consisting of Erik Segerstedt, Mattias Andréasson and Danny Saucedo, who will compete in the third semi-final with their song "Baby Goodbye", which they composed with Oscar Gorres.[33] The final artist, performing "Higher" in the fourth and final semi-final, will be the Star Pilots.[34][35]

Semi-finals

The semi-finals of Melodifestivalen 2009 will begin on 7 February. Five semi-finals will be held, in Gothenburg, Skellefteå, Leksand, Malmö and Norrköping (Andra Chansen), leading up to the final at the Stockholm Globe Arena on 14 March 2009.

In the four semi-finals, the top four songs through televoting will battle against each other for qualification for the final. The first and fourth-placed songs will compete against each other, with the second and third-placed songs doing the same. The winners of each battle will qualify for the final of Melodifestivalen, while the losers will go to the Andra Chansen round.

The 32 songs announced by SVT were split among each semi-final on 11 December 2008.[36][37] The final running order for the semi-finals was revealed on 15 January 2009.[38]

Since Sweden is not one of the "Big Four" and is not the host of the 2009 contest, it will have to compete in one of the two semi-finals.
