Gossip Girl is an American teen drama series based on the book series of the same name written by Cecily von Ziegesar. The series was created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, and premiered on The CW on September 19, 2007. Narrated by the omniscient yet unseen blogger "Gossip Girl", voiced by Kristen Bell, the series revolves around the lives of privileged young adults on Manhattan's Upper East Side in New York City.

The series begins with the return of Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) from a mysterious stay at a boarding school in Connecticut.[1] Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), who creators describe as the queen at the center of their chess game,[2] is a longtime friend and occasional rival of Serena's, and the Queen Bee of Constance Billard School's social scene.[3] The story also follows Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick), the bad boy of the Upper East Side, Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford), Chuck's best friend, and other characters of the turbulent Manhattan scene: Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), Nate's friend and Serena's on-again, off-again ex; Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr), Dan's best friend; and Dan's ambitious sister Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen).[4][5]

Showrunners have revealed they have a "definite endgame in mind" and know how the series will end but not in the near future.[6]

Episode format

Every episode begins with the blog page of the Gossip Girl blog with Serena's picture from the pilot episode. Afterwards, a recap of events relevant to the upcoming narrative is shown, which ends again with the blog page, only this time with a picture from other character(s) with a text about a recent event connected with the picture.

The narrator is always Gossip Girl, voiced by Kristen Bell. She begins the recap with the sentence "Gossip Girl here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite," and usually ends the episode with "You know you love me. xoxo, Gossip Girl."

Cast and characters

The first few episodes of the first season included the original concept from the books, mainly following the lives of the five teenage characters in their high school years. Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) is often described as the 'it girl'. It is revealed that she has had a scandalous past, that continues to haunt her, she is known for her many off-again relationships with the male characters and is known for rebellious drive outs. Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), an outsider who becomes a part of the turbulent Manhattan scene, an aspiring writer and fairly straight-arrow guy with a good heart and morals. Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) is a beautiful Queen Bee of the Constance Billard School's social scene, as well as Serena's best friend and occasional rival. Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) is the perfect "Golden Boy" of the Upper East Side, always being fought over by the prominent female characters. Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) serves as the show's antihero, being a womanizer and party lover with a troubled life and past that provide a hidden vulnerable side.

Beside the five regulars mentioned above, three more characters appeared in the pilot episode. Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen) is Dan's younger sister, who desperately tries to become the next Queen Bee, a goal that makes her realize the true values of life; Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford) and Dan's father Rufus Humphrey (Matthew Settle), who share a romantic past that follows them throughout the show, and eventually leads to marriage. Jenny then becomes a regular on the show, despite being younger than the others. The Humphrey family is centered upon as they explore life on the 'Upper East side', Dan trying to look after his little sister as she discovers the party scene.

Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr), enters the show in its first season as Dan's past love, and becomes a series regular after the 14th episode. Other characters include Eric van der Woodsen (Connor Paolo) Serena's kind and compassionate brother, who comes out late in the first season and becomes very close with Jenny. Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg) is an occasional antagonist in the show, with a recurring role. Carter Baizen (Sebastian Stan) appears as Chuck's enemy with a romantic interest in Serena.

Many characters appear as guest stars as parents and other relatives of the main cast. Eleanor Waldorf-Rose (Margaret Colin) and Harold Waldorf (John Shea) appeared as Blair's divorced parents, with Cyrus Rose (Wallace Shawn) as Eleanor's husband and Blair's stepfather. Dorota Kishlovsky (Zuzanna Szadkowski) is Blair's loyal maid. Anne Archibald (Francie Swift) and Howard "The Captain" Archibald (Sam Robards) are Nate's estranged parents, while William van der Bilt I (James Naughton) and William "Tripp" van der Bilt III (Aaron Tveit) are Nate's manipulative grandfather and cousin, respectively. Bartholomew "Bart" Bass (Robert John Burke) is Lily's late ex-husband and Chuck's demanding father, and Jack Bass (Desmond Harrington) is Bart's brother and Chuck's uncle. Celia "CeCe" Rhodes (Caroline Lagerfelt) is Serena's grandmother and Gabriela Abrams (Gina Torres) is Vanessa's mother.

Seasons

Season One: 2007–08

Season 1 featured 18 episodes and began airing on September 19, 2007. However, due to the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, only 13 episodes were produced from the planned 22, but once the strike ended, the network announced five more episodes to be produced, and finally the season concluded on May 19, 2008. The season premiered with 3.5 million viewers,[7] and ended with 3.00.[8] Although the ratings were low the network renewed the show for second season due to their aiming on male and female demographics on age 18–34.

In the beginning of the first season, the episodes focus on why Serena initially left. It is soon discovered that she felt an overwhelming guilt for sleeping with her best friend Blair's boyfriend Nate Archibald behind Blair's back. However, as the season progresses, Georgina Sparks, a new character with malicious intentions, comes back to haunt Serena. It is soon discovered that the real reason Serena left was because one night she and Georgina were hanging out in a hotel room after a night of drinking and partying. Things soon got out of hand when the man they were with asked for his cocaine and Serena gave the drugs to him. Immediately after, the man began having a seizure and the two girls panicked and ran away. Serena felt obligated to at least call 911 for help, and as she ran across the street in hiding, she saw that the man they were with had died. This is the full reason why Serena left because in the same night she had slept with her best friend's boyfriend and killed a man. Part of the main story arc also involves Serena's relationship with Dan Humphrey, an outsider from Brooklyn who she begins to date but has a rocky road with because of their different family backgrounds.

The Humphreys also feature in storylines such as Rufus' love for Serena's mother Lilly, the return of their mother and how they cope with life on the 'Upper East side'. Jenny, for example, transforms throughout the series from an innocent young girl who often needs help and guidance from her older brother to a feisty young fashion designer, partying hard to fit in with Serena and Blair.

Other storylines include Blair breaking up with Nate and falling for his best friend Chuck Bass, which leads to her dethroning as Queen Bee; Jenny's training to become the next Queen Bee lead by Blair, which contribute to both of them later in the season beginning war for the throne; Nate's family problems; Lily's marriage with Bart Bass; Rufus' troubled marriage; Dan's relationship with Serena, which is interrupted by his former love Vanessa Abrams; and the friendship of Chuck and Nate.

The suite that Serena Van der Woodsen and her family live in while their apartment is under construction is a Triplex Suites at The New York Palace Hotel.

Season Two: 2008–09

Season 2 featured 25 episodes and began airing on September 1, 2008 starting at the end of the summer instead of the more conventional start in the fall along with larger TV networks. The season concluded on May 25, 2009. The season premiered with 3.43 million viewers,[9] similar to the first season and ended with 2.23, lower than expected.

The second season mainly explores the senior year of most of the characters, the continuity of their new found relationships, their final encounter with "Gossip Girl", and their attempts to get into college. The first couple of episodes feature part of the summer vacation, respectively week before the start of the school year. The role of "Gossip Girl" is slightly decreased. She continues to run her blog, but she keeps the ultimate information for herself, sending it in the final episode as the last blast, where Serena decides to find out who "Gossip Girl" really is, but ultimately fails.

The second season also focuses on Blair and Chuck, who were labeled "the heart of GG" by People magazine.[10] At first, both characters negate their feelings for one another, and go through random schemes and manipulations. After all the games are done, both of them eventually say "I love you" to each other. Other storylines include Blair's attempt to enter Yale University; the death of Bart Bass which proves to be a very bad influence on Chuck and the exploration of his involvements; Dan's transformation from outsider to insider and his relationship with Serena's teacher Rachel Carr; Serena's relationships after breaking up with Dan; Jenny's career as fashion designer and her rebellions which ultimately ends with her becoming the next Queen Bee; the end of Nate and Chuck's friendship and Nate's friendship with Dan; Nate's family problems which continue to grow and affect on his new found relationship with Vanessa; Rufus and Lily's relationship after Bart's death, their engagement, and revelation that they have a son; and Serena's involvement with Poppy Lifton, a secretive socialite that tries to steal money from Serena and her friends which ultimately leads to the return of Georgina Sparks, who claims to be changed but eventually decides to get revenge on Blair.

The penultimate episode of the season, "Valley Girls", was a backdoor pilot for a Gossip Girl spin-off series also titled Valley Girls. The series was set in 1983 and chronicled the teen years of the Gossip Girl character Lily van der Woodsen.

Season Three: 2009–10

Gossip Girl's third season premiere aired on the CW on September 14, 2009. The cast began filming on June 29, 2009 in New York City for a 22 episode season. Hilary Duff joined the show for a multi-episode guest arc in this season as Olivia Burke, a famous movie star who wants a normal college experience, and eventually starts dating Dan Humphrey.[11]

Joanna García also joined the show for the first four episodes as Bree Buckley, an "evil Miss America" type from the Archibalds' rival family – she served as a love interest for Nate, until he found out she was just using him to get back at her cousin's fiancé Carter Baizen.[12] America's Next Top Model creator Tyra Banks appeared in the fourth episode as Ursula Nyquist, a larger than life actress, for whom Serena Van Der Woodsen temporarily works as a publicist. Also appearing in this episode was Sonya Harum, an up and coming actress, and designers Tory Burch and Georgina Chapman.[13] Also, Gina Torres got a recurring role as Vanessa's mother, Gabriela Abrams.[14]

Music group Sonic Youth made a guest appearance in the season's fifth episode, "Rufus Getting Married", where they played an acoustic version of their song "Starpower" at Rufus and Lily's wedding.[15] The ninth episode of the season caused a significant amount of controversy. Parent groups urged the CW not to air the episode that contained a threesome. The preview for the episode revolved around an "OM3" theme. CW ignored these requests and announced that it was going to air the episode as planned.

Caroline Lagerfelt also returned as Celia "CeCe" Rhodes (Lily's mother) in "The Treasure of Serena Madre" for Thanksgiving on the Upper East Side; causing a little trouble again between Lily & Rufus. Robert John Burke who played Chuck's father, Bart Bass, returned for A Christmas Carol themed episode in December, while Desmond Harrington will return to the show in spring, as Chuck's uncle, Jack Bass in episodes 15, 16 & 17.[16] Jack and Chuck's mother seem to have a deal about getting the hotel from Chuck after he had to give it away for public because of the rumors about some sex-affairs with his employees. Nate and Serena become a couple after a short affair from Serena with Trip, Nate's cousin, who also abandoned Serena in a damaged car after they had an accident. Dan and Vanessa finally get together, but first decided to keep it secret. Jenny and Damian, a drug-seller, break up before they share their first night together. Willa Holland, who played Jenny's model friend Agnes, confirmed on her Twitter account that she'll appear on Gossip Girl again.[17] Billy Baldwin has been cast as Dr. William van der Woodsen, Serena's and Eric's father, for the last four episodes of the season, starting in April.[18] Also, Laura Harring is guest-starring as Evelyn Bass (Chuck Bass' mother), but uses the alias Elizabeth Fisher, towards the end of the season.[19]

This season focused hugely on Jenny Humphrey's development, her downward spiral seeming to mirror Serena's pre-series life. She does numerous unkind things in an attempt to stay on top and nearly always wins, but ends up empty; the one person she cares about and wants the affection of is Nate but he only wants Serena. The last two episodes see her trying to break up Rufus and Lily and Nate and Serena in an attempt to be happy, but Jenny soon sees that no one wants her. Alone and trying to escape from it all, she goes to see Nate at Nate and Chuck's apartment but finds Chuck there, heartbroken and drowning his sorrows after he believes Blair has fallen out of love with him forever. Two desperate, lonely people they turn to each other and sleep together, but this only destroys Jenny further.

In the season finale, Jenny moves back to Hudson to stay with her mother after sleeping with Chuck as an attempt to feel loved by someone. Jenny tells Eric who convinces her to tell Dan. Blair and Chuck get together the night Jenny is there, but breakup again after discovering Chuck slept with Jenny. Blair and Serena fly to Paris for the summer, Georgina Sparks played by Michelle Trachtenberg comes back with a big surprise for Dan, claiming she is pregnant with his unborn child and Nate attempts to deal with his break-up from Serena in a very Chuck-like way. Most shockingly of all, in the final scene of the episode Chuck is walking along the ally, drunk and two muggers approach him. They found his ring that was supposed to be for Blair. They took the ring and Chuck fights back, but a gunshot sounds and the muggers run, and Chuck falls to the ground, closing his eyes, showing that he was the one who was shot.

Season Four: 2010–11

On Feb 16, 2010, The CW announced it will renew the show for a fourth season, beginning in Fall 2010.[20] It has been confirmed that Taylor Momsen, who plays Jenny Humphrey, will be absent until episode 9 when the series returns, due to "creative" reasons and her summer Warped Tour concert schedule.[21] It is now being reported that Jessica Szohr's character will be absent from several episodes of season 4. It is rumored her character will go abroad to work with CNN.[22][23] But it is said both characters will be series regulars. It has been reported that Taylor Momsen will only be absent from the first half of the season, and will be back in time for November sweeps.[24] Leighton Meester stated in an interview filming would start in Paris for season 4. On June 16, Jessica Szohr said that she was excited for the fourth season and the direction the show would be taking following the dramatic and cliffhanger laden season finale.

Former Melrose Place star Katie Cassidy is set to join the cast of Gossip Girl for a multi-episode arc, playing Juliet Sharp, Nate's new girlfriend who attends Columbia University.[25] Cassidy previously worked with fellow Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg in the remake of Black Christmas and will be starring with Leighton Meester in new movie Monte Carlo.

Harry Potter actress Clemence Poesy will also be joining the cast for the 4th season of Gossip Girl. She is set to play Eva, Chuck Bass' mystery French girl with whom he will surprise Blair and Serena in Paris as a "changed man" after his accident in Prague.

Olivia Burke (portrayed by Hilary Duff) was also set to be back on the up-coming 4th season.[26]

The fourth season will air on Mondays at 9/8c,[27] and will premiere September 13, 2010.[28] A trailer for season 4 of Gossip Girl was released on August 16, 2010 titled 'Oh Mon Dieu' (Oh My God in French), and was entirely in French to celebrate the season 4 return which will be set in France.[29]

Reception

U.S. Nielsen Ratings

The first episode of the show was watched by 3.65 million viewers, coming in last place in its 9:00 p.m. timeslot on Wednesday nights.[32] Despite this, the show was noted to have held the best audience retention of America's Next Top Model in spite of a decline of 30% in the advertiser-craved 18–49 demographic and in total viewers.[33] The show was not able to cling to its viewers in its second outing, however, losing more than half of ANTM's audience and 22% of its own debut numbers in the face of strong competition from other shows such as ABC's Private Practice and NBC's Bionic Woman each of which made impressive debuts that night.[34] The third season took a major dip in ratings with 12 episodes hitting below the 2 million viewer mark.[35]

Critical response

Gossip Girl poster featuring critical review

Gossip Girl initially received mixed reviews. Due to the show's pedigree as an adaptation of The New York Times bestselling novel series, the show was considered to be one of the more anticipated new shows of the 2007–2008 television season. An August 2007 survey by OTX, a global media research and consulting firm, placed the show on the list of top ten new shows that viewers were aware of.[39] Though the pilot was the recipient of positive reviews from publications such as Variety, The Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle and the Boston Globe, other reviewers described it as a guilty pleasure rather than an hour's worth of must-watch television.[40][41][42][43] Metacritic gave it a score of 54, based on the reviews of 26 different publications.[44]

However, author Cecily von Ziegesar has expressed support for the show, noting that all of her major plot points were present in the pilot.[45] The Parents Television Council has shown particular criticism of the series, especially with its "OMFG" ad campaign from April 2008.[46] It also named the episode "Victor/Victrola" the worst television program of the week in which the episode originally was broadcast.[47] Quotes from the Parents Television Council review, as well as negative quotes from the San Diego Union-Tribune, New York Post and the Boston Herald, were used on various advertisements for the second season. The Hartford Courant chronicled a variety of negative responses to the ads. The ads included quotes like "Every Parent's Nightmare", "Mind-Blowingly Inappropriate" and "A Nasty Piece of Work" in what appears to be an effort to continue the 'rebellious teen' style of the show.[48]

As the show continued its first season, the response become considerably more positive, and by the second season critical response was favorable. Metacritic gave the new season an improved score of 71. "Summer's been good to this girl," claimed Entertainment Weekly, who awarded the series its highest grade of "A."[49] The New York Daily News claimed the show had found its footing by stating "It knows exactly what it wants and needs its new hybrid product to be. The hockey fights video of teen romance drama." Gossip Girl was designated the "Best. Show. Ever." in April 2008 by New York magazine.[50]

Toward the conclusion of the first season, Janet Malcolm of The New Yorker criticized the show for its deviations from the novels. She has stated that the series was, "related to the original only in the names and outlines of the characters." She further asserted that, "Without von Ziegesar's fast, mocking commentary to propel them, the TV episodes are sluggish and crass – a move from Barneys to Kmart."[51]
