Loud is the fifth studio album by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna, released November 12, 2010 on Def Jam Recordings. Recording sessions and production for the album took place during February to August 2010, partially during Rihanna's Last Girl on Earth Tour. Rihanna worked with several record producers, including StarGate, The Runners, Polow da Don, Tricky Stewart, and Alex da Kid, among others. Loud heavily incorporates dance-pop and pop to offer up-tempo, sing-along and club-oriented songs. Loud also marks Rihanna's first return to a dancehall-influenced sound since 2006's A Girl Like Me.

The album debuted at number one on the Canadian and Swiss Albums Chart. Loud entered at number three on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 207,000 copies in its first week in the United States, serving as Rihanna's highest first-week sales to date. Loud has produced two singles; the international hit "Only Girl (In the World)" and "What's My Name?", which have both become number-one hits in the US and the UK. Upon its release, Loud received positive reviews from most music critics.

Background

In June 2010, it was revealed that Rihanna was planning to release her fifth studio album soon.[2] Recording sessions for the album began in February 2010,[3] and continued over a period of six months, concluding in August 2010.[4] Singers, songwriters and producers Taio Cruz,[5] Alex da Kid,[6] Sean Garrett,[7] Ne-Yo,[8] Rico Love, Timbaland,[9] Shontelle,[10] David Guetta,[11] and Drake[12] worked on the album. "I'm gonna miss the Rated R era too, but nothing compares to the album I just made," Rihanna said, adding, "I made sure not to let you down with my music. You guys are always defending me, so now you’ve got some great songs to justify it. I didn’t want to go backward and remake Good Girl Gone Bad. I wanted the next step in the evolution of Rihanna, and it’s perfect for us".[4] In early September 2010, she announced that the album would be called Loud, saying "get Loud everybody, get crazy, get excited, because I'm pumped. I'm just gonna be me, because that's what you guys love the most, and that's what makes me feel best. Just being normal, normal for me is Loud! Sassy, fun, flirty, energetic."[4] While Rihanna was on set filming for the movie Battleship, she explained in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, "Loud is, the word, the name of the album definitely reflects the attitude of it, it’s really sassy and flirty and it grabs your attention and that’s why I enjoy it. It takes you through a really really interesting ride. So colorful the album.”[13] The artwork of the album was revealed on September 28, 2010.[14]

Music

Tracks have been penned by Shontelle,[15] Ester Dean[16] and Nicki Minaj.[17] Stargate produced fizzing synths, club beats and sing-along chants featured heavily, with three songs on the album, "Only Girl (In the World)", "What's My Name?" and "S&M". "Cheers", which Rihanna also referred to by its working title, "Drink to That", is a funky, loping guitar groove dedicated to a night on the town and interpolates Avril Lavigne's "I'm With You". "California King Bed" is a strummed, acoustic ballad.[18] "S&M" is the "loudest" track on the album.[19] Rihanna described "Raining Men" as "a really fun song. Nothing like the original. It's quite uptempo but kind of quirky and funny."[17] Rihanna and Drake have described their duet, "What's My Name?" as a "young" and "playful" track.[20]

Release and promotion

The album was released on November 12, 2010, in four separate editions. The standard edition; the deluxe edition, which is packaged in a digipak (exclusively for US and Australia), and features a 30 minute DVD presenting a making of the album; the couture edition featuring the deluxe edition of Loud, as well as a deluxe cover art lithograph, a box set with enhanced clear couture cover and a full-size photo book.[21] The same edition was available as the Ultra Couture Edition featuring a copy of the Deluxe Edition of Loud signed by Rihanna herself, and the MP3 download of Loud on street date, as well as all the features of the couture edition. The edition sold out and is no longer available.[22] An explicit version of the album is exclusively available digitally and bears a Parental Advisory label.[23] The Japanese edition of the album will be released with two extra mixes of "Only Girl (In the World)".[24]

Rihanna first headed to London to promote the album in United Kingdom on October 1, 2010.[25] She interviewed with BBC Radio 1, "I can't believe it's the fifth album already," she said to host Scott Mills. "That's insane to think about. I've never been this excited about anything I've done creatively, and this is just the perfect Rihanna album, every song is tailored to me." During the making of the album, the singer had a particular agenda in mind: "I wanted songs that were all Rihanna songs, that nobody else could do. I didn't want the generic pop record that Kesha or Lady Gaga or Katy Perry could just do and it'll work. I wanted a song, or songs, that were Rihanna songs, that only I could do, had that little West Indian vibe to it, had that certain tone, a certain sass and a certain energy."[26] As a part of the promotion, Rihanna unveiled five tracks from the album, at a club in London.[18] Rihanna said during the promotion that much of the music was born out of frustration. She explained: "When you go to a club and have to listen to bad music you revert to the liquor, because you want to have a good time. I hate having to skip a track. I wanted to make an album you can just play."[19] She first performed "Only Girl (In the World)" and "What's My Name?" on Saturday Night Live on October 30, 2010.[27] She also performed "What's My Name?" in Times Square during MTV's The Seven on November 15, 2010,[28] on Late Show with David Letterman on November 16,[29] and on Good Morning America on November 17.[30]

Singles

The album's lead single "Only Girl (In the World)" was released on September 10, 2010.[31] The song was sent to US mainstream and rhythmic radio on September 21, 2010.[32][33] The song has currently peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song has also reached number one in the UK, Canada, Australia, Austria, Belgium (Wallonia), Ireland, Israel, Italy, New Zealand, Norway and Slovakia.[34][35] "What's My Name?" was released as the second single of the album on October 29, 2010 and the video has already been shot.[36] On October 21, 2010 Billboard reported that the version of the single featuring Drake had made its hot shot debut on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart at number sixty-seven.[37] It was released in some European countries on October 29, 2010 and later in the US on November 1.[38] It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Rihanna her ninth number-one hit on the chart.[39][40]

"Raining Men" was released to US Urban radio on December 7, 2010. It so far charted at number 57 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.[17]

"S&M" is scheduled to become the album's third official single after it impacts U.S. mainstream and rhythmic radio on January 25, 2011.[41] The original plan was to release this single, with plans for an "unexpected" music video.[19][36] However, in a recent radio interview, Rihanna stated that she wanted her fans to choose the album's third single, naming two song choices, the aforementioned "S&M" and "Cheers", due to them being the top two songs fans are requesting.[42] "S&M" won the vote. "S&M" charted at number 72 in on the Canadian Singles Chart, at number 53 on the US Billboard Hot 100, at number 55 on the UK Singles Chart, and at number four on the Norwegian Singles Chart, following the album's release.[43][44][45]

Tour

On September 29, 2011, Rihanna will embark on her fifth concert tour, the Loud Tour which is in support of her fifth album, Loud. The tour was announced on December 7, 2010, and will include 39 shows, starting in Belfast before visiting mainland Europe then ending with the final date in Manchester on December 2, 2011.[46][47][48][49]

Commercial performance

The album debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of 207,000 copies in the United States.[51] It is Rihanna's highest first-week sales in the US.[51] It also entered at number one on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[52] In its second week, the album dropped to number six on the Billboard 200 and sold 141,000 copies.[53] In its third week, the album sold 77,000 copies staying in the top 10.[54] In its fourth week, the album sold an additional 71,000 copies, coming in at number 9 on the Billboard Top 200.[55] In its fifth week, the album slipped to number 11 with sales of 84,000 copies.[56] The album sold an additional 111,000 copies in its sixth week coming in at number 10 on the Billboard Top 200.[39] In its seventh week, the album had climbed back to its original peak of 3 and sold 62,000 copies. As of January 16, 2011 the album has sold 813,000 copies in the United States.[57]

Loud achieved considerable international charting, reaching the top-10 of charts in several countries.[58] In Canada, it debuted at number one on the Canadian Albums Chart,[52] selling 27,000 copies in its first week.[59] Loud went on to sell more than 80,000 units in Canada, thus achieving platinum status by the first week of December, 2010.[60] As of January 5, 2011, Loud has sold more than 130,000 copies in Canada.[61] In France, it debuted at number three with first week sales of 17,304 copies.[62] By its sixth week on the French Charts, Loud achieved platinum status by reaching the 100,000 copies mark.[63] In its second week on the Australian Albums Chart, the album was certified Gold for sales of over 35,000 copies.[64] In Italy, the album became Rihanna's highest peaking chart position at number 11.[65] It became her third consecutive number one album in Switzerland.[66] Loud debuted at number two on the German Albums Chart.[67][68] The album debuted at number two in Ireland,[69] and the United Kingdom.[70] In the UK, the album sold 91,000 copies in its first week. In its seventh week on the chart, it climbed to top of the UK album chart, giving her second number-one album in the country. After only seven weeks of sales in UK, the album became the fourth best-selling album in that country for 2010.[71] As of January 7, 2011, the album was certificated three-time Platinum in the UK.[72]

Loud received positive reviews from most music critics.[82] At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 68, based on 20 reviews, which indicates "generally favorable reviews".[82] Jon Pareles of The New York Times perceived a "hermetic, cool calculation" on the album, writing that it "works the pop gizmos as neatly as any album this year, maintaining the Rihanna brand".[76] New York Daily News writer Jim Farber gave the album 4 out of 5 stars and wrote that it "seems effortless and free".[83] Entertainment Weekly's Leah Greenblatt viewed that it shows Rihanna "undefeated by her worst circumstances — and finding redemption in exactly the kind of pop nirvana that made her famous in the first place".[74] James Reed of The Boston Globe called it "an unabashed return to where Rihanna belongs: the dance floor" and stated: "As if liberating herself from the depths, she’s a force on these 11 songs".[84] Stacey Anderson of Spin commended Rihanna's "full, healthy claim to her sexuality" and wrote that the album "offers a confident female ethos on par with the best of Beyoncé or Shakira".[80]

In contrast, Allmusic writer Andy Kellman gave it 3 out of 5 stars and found it "slapdash" and "uneven", calling it "more an unfocused assortment of poor-to-solid songs than a unified set".[1] Boston Phoenix writer Daniel Brockman gave it 2 out of 4 stars and commented that "just because it's louder [stylistically] doesn't mean there's more to hear".[85] The Washington Post's Chris Richards viewed that Rihanna's performance lacks depth and called the album "largely forgettable".[86] Andy Gill of The Independent viewed that "the more interesting tracks are those with less salacious demands on her vulnerability".[87] Despite noting some flaws in its production, Slant Magazine's Sal Cinquemani complimented "the subtle West Indian flavor with which Rihanna and company have smartly imbued" on most of the album and stated: "Rihanna has always had trouble fitting into one genre [...] and for better or worse, Rihanna continues to stylistically branch out on Loud".[79] Hugh Montgomery of The Observer viewed that "Sonically, it's fairly unremarkable [...] but its strident buoyancy is difficult to resist".[88] Rolling Stone writer Melissa Maerz noted Rihanna as "serene" and concluded "Maybe the good girl gone bad is getting better?".[78]

BBC Online's James Skinner called the album "brilliantly sassy and exuberant at times" and praised Rihanna's vocals for "elevating it from a hit-and-miss collection into something oddly arresting".[89] Genevieve Koski of The A.V. Club gave Loud a B- rating and commended Rihanna for elevating its "generic" sound, writing that she "does sound invigorated, delivering charismatic vocal performances of material that doesn’t always warrant them".[90] Los Angeles Times writer August Brown called it "strobe-thumping".[75] Emily Mackay of NME gave it a 7/10 rating and found that "'Loud'’s experiments feel more organic, its tone better paced" than Rated R.[91] Chicago Sun-Times writer Thomas Conner gave the album 3 out of 4 stars and stated that "the celebratory atmosphere of Rihanna's sassy new jams are seasoned with some of the darker flavors from 'Rated R'".[73] USA Today's Steve Jones stated: "The edgy music, which leans heavily toward dance and island sounds, fits well with her less than blissful romantic romps".[81] Pitchfork Media's Ryan Dombal complimented the album's "effervescent pop" and stated: "Her laissez-faire attitude toward hit-making on Loud can result in too-safe moves or semi-experiments that come off surprisingly great".[77]
