== Concerning La Placita article ==

I recently submitted article 'La Placita' for review and it was rejected based on my use of two sources. It should be noted that these are primary sources with archaeological data; no one else has published on this site. I'm not sure how two primary sources are insufficient, and I am opposed to adding sources that are irrelevant just to provide the appearance of validity.

Additionally, the article was composed by a team of archaeology graduate students. No material was pulled verbatim from either the dissertation or the book.

Can you please direct me to the Wikipedia standards governing the appropriateness/number of sources so the article may be approved? We are trying to promote interest in Colorado archaeological sites.

Per your comment on the Wide left AfD...

I'm sorely tempted to try and create Peyton Manning's neck as an article and see what happens, just as a case study. :) MSJapan (talk) 20:19, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

*pounds head* WP:Beans Nole, why didn't you remember beans!
Well, I see two immediate concerns: Troy Polamalu's hair doesn't have an article, so why should his neck? Troy's hair clearly has more lasting notability... b) Would that article have to follow BLP, or should WP:Biographies of living parts of people become a blue link? Those aside, as I stated at the AfD, we have the sourcing to make it past GA. :D Nolelover Talk·Contribs 20:58, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

feathering the scope

Hi, i've heard you've had some issues with my recent page "feathering the scope". I have created that page as i have many requests to make a page on it and i think it is a page that people (some) will find useful and helpful so please, please could you withdraw your issues so the page can continue to help people who want to know about "feathering the scope" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Probeast645 (talkcontribs) 15:05, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Probeast, and welcome to Wikipedia. First, I want to thanks you for your submission. You've obviously put some work into you article, so I'll try to answer this the best I can. Now, take two minutes and read this page. It's short. :) Then tell me, does "feathering the scope" have multiple reliable, independent sources discussing it? If so, then please add those to the article. If not, then it will be deleted. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 15:12, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of my latest contribution "Project'Or RIA"

Hi Nolelover,

first let me thank you, for your deeply commitment agains missuse of Wikipedia.

There are lot of open source initiative with same deep commitment as you did. One is "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dotproject", another is "Project'Or RIA". Dotproject is dealing with the same topic as Project'Or RIA communtiy, but with another approach.

It is very interessting, that dotprojects contribution is approved and my contribution is deleted. I set up my contribution page with nearly the same content as dotproject (and we know, dotproject is approved). And now you delete my contribution "Project'Or RIA". I'm sure you see, from an external perspective, it looks there are double standards applied.

To clarify my person. I have no commercial interest in this open souce product. I'm a convinced user of this product and contribute a lot of my privat lifetime to this project community.

I can't see any reason, why my contribution is deleted. And if there is a reason to delete, than you have to apply this to all contributions which dealing in the same field.

Thanks for your kind support.

cleverchild. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.122.80.37 (talk) 08:33, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there 62. First of all, each article is judged on its own merits, so dotProject makes absolutely no difference to whether or not your article will be kept. However, you might be interested in knowing that I have nominated dotProject for deletion as well. Regardless, there was a very good reason why your article was deleted: read WP:42 (it's short), and tell me if Project'Or passes that "test". Yes, I should apply this standard to all contributions in the field. However, I'm a volunteer, and I don't have to spend all my time looking for non-notable software, and no one else has to either. Hello,

Thank you for your feedback on our suggested "Rough Diamond" wikipedia page. We understand a wikipedia page for "Diamonds" already exists but the information for rough diamonds on that page is limited to its history tied to De Beers and and what happens to rough diamonds as they undergo the cutting and polishing process. There is a history and use of rough diamonds that is separate and different enough from the history and use of cut/polished diamonds to warrant a separate page. The top wikipedia search result for "Rough Diamonds" (plural) currently stands as a rock album, which we believe is incomplete information.

A wikipedia page for "Rough Diamond" (singular) consists of a one line description. We would merely like to build a more robust description and explanation of rough diamonds so that the public can better understand how it is different from a cut/polished diamond.

Thanks for your consideration and let us know if you have any further questions. Mjshampine (talk) 18:05, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Mjshampine, and thank you for your work and submission. I think you're mixing up the pages Diamond and Diamond (gemstone). The Diamond page should be about the rough stone (while Diamond (gemstone) should be about the cut product), so you should feel free to add your material there. Article creation on "Kidwai nagar"

Hi, I am trying to create a new article named "Kidwai Nagar East", but I am new here and pretty much unaware how to submit it successfully without any errors. As I tried to Submit and re-submit my article, but always get a message that speaks about some issues to be fixed before it get accepted and I can't figure it out how to do it correctly.

Please Help

Arvind.southdelhi (talk) 14:01, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Arvind. I declined your submission because all articles that pass through the Articles for Creation process must have at least one reliable source. I know this sounds goofy, but do have a reference for that location? Has it been written about in newspapers, magazines, online articles (not blogs), etc? Newbie needs help

No, I do not know how to use the word count tool, so I guess I don't know how to make a PB&J sandwich either :-). I do know how to use the word count function on Word and Open Office. I've used both programs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please be patient with me as I am technically a senior citizen. hahahaha Quill and Pen (talk) 22:34, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hehe, no problem. I'm glad to see you decided to help out with copyediting (and Wikipedia in general), and I probably should have guessed your age from your username. ;-) Anyway, since you have imported the tool, it should already be working for you. Now, whenever you open up an article, the button (page size) will be in the collapsed "Toolbox" menu on your left. In this image, it would appear in the extreme bottom left, right under "Special pages". You'll know when you've clicked the right button, because more of the text will be highlighted and some "Document statistics" will appear at the top. To remove that, click the "page size" button again. If the button is not there at all, then we'll need to re-import the script. Tell me if you've got it. :) Nolelover Talk·Contribs 22:54, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

On my reference for the page Tom Kesley, i have used to school newspaper at which he attends. I have sourced all my information from here after an interview the paper had with him. Could you tell me why i am not allowed to use that as a referance.

Regards

Lizzie — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.219.218.8 (talk) 23:46, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Are you saying you copied the interview? I don't quite understand that. Either way, please take 30 seconds and read WP:VRS. It explains exactly what you need to get your article accepted, and your article doesn't have any reliable, independent sources atm. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 23:49, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No no, i mean i got my infomation from the interview, it was all said in the interview, ive put it into my own words — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.219.218.8 (talk) 23:57, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Understood, but that interview is not enough at all. Wikipedia requires articles to be covered by multiple reliable sources, and one school interview doesn't make the cut. You need much more then that. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 23:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, what else am i going to need? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.219.218.8 (talk) 00:00, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Like I said, "Articles require significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Has he been covered in newspapers? Books? Magazines? Online article (not blogs)? That's what you need. With all due respect, I don't see that here. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 00:04, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Any help will be greatly appreciated! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexd1984 (talkcontribs) 00:03, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, each article is judged on its own merits, so the other article is kinda irrelevant. However, the main problem is the mission statement and lists of products. Both are frowned upon here on Wikipedia, so if you remove those and add some more reliable sources discussing the website (see WP:VRS), feel free to resubmit. Sorry, but I couldn't figure out where to go to find the comments I needed to review for my submission that you reviewed. Just so you know I am aware it is a "stub" and merely wanted to submit it so that others could actively add to it. Also, I'd like to know how to request an article be deleted. It is titled "John Searl" and redirected from Searl Effect Generator. It is a very gossipy mean article that, in my opinion, doesn't meet Wiki standards. Thank you.EcFitzsimmons (talk) 00:25, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My comments are in the yellow box here. Is there anything in particular you find gossipy about the Searl article? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 00:57, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've added more to my STUB. Would you take a look and see if it passes? Again, I realize it is incomplete, but once it is an ARTICLE I will be able to visit it and add more. Thank you.EcFitzsimmons (talk) 02:29, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Congradulations! Now, one word of advice; please edit out many of the direct quotations. Use them as sources, that's fine. However, you need to put everything in your owns words and use those external links as reference, not just copy everything. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 17:23, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. Advice well taken. I'm sure I can research within Wikipedia but I'd rather as you a ? as an expert. Is there a way to upload a PDF file from my desktop to use as a citation that is not available online? I have many excellent citations and news articles that are simply unavailable online. I've searched and searched. EcFitzsimmons (talk) 17:52, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Please advise. Thank you for all your help. EcFitzsimmons (talk) 17:52, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's a common misperception - sources don't need to be online for you to use them. :-) I assume it's like newspapers and magazines. If so, we do have citation templates specifically for them: {{cite news}} and {{cite journal}}. Just copy, paste and fill in the parameters. If that's too tough or time-consuming, just do what you've dne with the other sources and fill in the relevant info (author, title, publisher, date, etc.) and I'll clean it up later. References for Rita Indian Playback singer

Hi here is the Article published on The Hindu (Well known News paper in India) about the playback singer Rita(well known popular news papaer in India). The Link for that Article is below/ Please check the link. She recorded many hit songs for Famous Composer Maestro Dr. Ilaiyaraaja, Yuvan Shankar Raja and Karthik Raja in Tamil. She is a well popular rising playback singer in the Tamil, Telugu Movie industry.

Also, Ilaiyaraaja has used her voice for a couple of songs in Mayilu (a Tamil film), which is still in the making. Stage shows with the maestro have been exhilarating experiences for Rita.

Mother Lalitha Thyagarajan is an accomplished veena player and sister Poppy (“That's what we call her!”) has also sung in a couple of films.

She has many hits in Telugu too.

U.S. War Memorials

Hey Nolelover, So I'm new to wikipedia and have been having lots of trouble. Like you asked, I found two more sources for my article. One is in a magazine called the "War Memorials Trust Bulletin" and it is a minor article. The second however is in a Battlefield Guide Book, one of the best series of WWI and WWII Battlefield guide books. I hope these will be enough. Its a young NPO so its tough to find what the other admins are calling "Mainstream" sources.

I am however having other problems. My picture of the logo was deleted for copyright infringement reasons and it looks like my other pictures of the memorials before and after shots were taken down as well. I am an intern with the AWMO and don't understand this very well, like I said, I'm new to this. There is no compyright on the logo and in the picture's description I noted that and said that we own the picture but relinquish all rights to it. As for the pictures of the memorial, I took those pictures myself and there shouldn't be any reason that they were deleted, nor did I get a message indicated that they would be.

Maybe I'm not using the right copyright tags or I don't know. Any help you could give me would be awesome. Maybe you could give me a time to jump online and you could help me through process. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

John Edward Steckroth 19:02, 7 February 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnsteckroth (talkcontribs)

Well, I'm just gonna take a chance on a couple of the sources and accept it. Hopefully you can find more and add them later on. Now as to the copyright issues. The logo shouldn't be an issue if the correct template is added, so we can work through that. However, the images from the page's website are slightly more problematic. If you took them, you need to talk to the deleting admin(s). If they are copyrighted, and unless the organizations releases them under an applicable licence, they can't be used on Wikipedia; they are replaceable (the stones and memorials are still there so anyone can take a picture), so we can't use them under fair-use. Can you give me more info on that? You've taken the images, but was it as an employee of the organization? If so, I believe they still hold the copyright. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 22:10, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome. Thanks. So I need the proper template for the logo. I thought I had the right one, but I guess not. Do you know which one I'm supposed to use.

As for the other pictures, I took them myself with my camera. And yes, as an employee, however, none of our pictures holds a copyright. Which template would I use for these. I still need to look into which admin(s) may have deleted these pics. Thank you again for helping me through this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnsteckroth (talkcontribs) 20:40, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For the logo, Wikipedia:Upload is a good place to start. Go down to the line "It is the logo of an organization, brand, product, public facility, or other item" and click 'organization', as I assume that applies best to it. Then try to pick your way through the much-too-complicated directions. Give me a link when you're done, and I'll try to clean it up best I can. That's about the extent of my file/copyright knowledge, so I'll leave you with that and come back to the others later. Got to go out at the moment. Article for creation Yannick Mireur

Hi Nolelove I just red your comment and subsequently some questions arose. Firstly let me tell you that it was my first wiki article so I was/am not too familiar with it. A lot of sources are indeed org. he worked for apart from some others (Columbia university and some articles). Where should I find "independent" sources as you said to make the article more credible?? The most sources I found are those of org. which I believed to be reliable etc. Also what improvement do you mean for the writings section? Thanks for your suggestions and comments! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lorenzone89 (talkcontribs) 01:09, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, yes, those sources are reliable. However, because they are written by him or by companies he has worked with/for, they don't really establish notability. An independent source can be anything - newspapers, magazines, books, online articles (not blogs). Just as long as they are about Mireur, and not by him. Now, the tone of the article will clear up if/when you solve the sourcing problem. Just make sure you aren't making any claims that can't be substantiated (especially since this is a biography of a living person), and stay away from original research and synthesizing sources. Right now it's a bit informal and parts are written like an opinion piece, rather then an article. Hope this helps in starting you off. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 01:55, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Noel Ashman Page

{{admin help}}

Hello there Nolelover, I am broodwhich, and I recently attempted to post a page on Noel Ashman. This page was ultimately turned down and I was hoping you could help me get it to where it needs to be. I am a bit of a new york nightlife aficionado, and I guess I am confused as to why this page is such a hot topic. I know that there was a Noel Ashman page for years and years, then it was taken down and since then it looks like, from the administrators discussion page, it has been posted and taken down many times by many different users. This seems odd to me because Noel is an established leader in the nightlife community. The main gist of your message there, as far as I could tell is that the sources are peripheral, but if I hone the sources will that for sure fix the problem? I feel like there are more concerns than just that at work here and I would love to get this page up for academic reasons, and I would so appreciate your help! Thanks Broodwhich (talk) 01:10, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I really didn't look at the submission or its sources; it was more of a procedural decline since I can't create the page for technical reasons (I'm not an admin) and it didn't look like any admins would recreate it from the short discussion at AN. From what User:DGG said, the only way to create the article now is to overturn the deletion rationale (it's been deleted eight times, total) at WP:Deletion review. I really can't help more then that, so I'm going to add a {{admin help}} template to this section and hope that someone can confirm that/deny that/give you better advice then what I can offer.
Admins, relevant links include the two articles, the AN discussion, the AfC Broodwhich submitted, the two AfDs and even one userfication. Thanks in advance for any help offered. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 03:40, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE Drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors January 2012 backlog elimination drive
GOCE January 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

45 people signed up for this drive this time; of these, 35 participated. This is similar to the number of editors who helped out in November. Thanks to all who participated! Barnstars will be distributed in the near future.

Progress report

Recent drives have been focusing on the oldest three months in the backlog. During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—July, August, and September 2010—from the queue, and there are less than 300 articles remaining from 2010. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the January 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy edit drive will be in March.

Concerning La Placita article
