We can make Wikipedia a greater resource for Women's History.
...and while you're at it, don't forget to mind the gap!
Wikipedia Editathon at the British Library, January 2011.

WikiWomen's History Month is a wiki-coordinated program of distributed events and editathons focused on WikiProject Women's History, to be held throughout the world in celebration of International Women's Day and Women's History Month in March 2012. These events can also be held ON Wiki - as themes and translation projects!

It is modeled on this past fall's Wikipedia Loves Libraries campaign (a month of distributed library micro-conferences), and the broader Gender Gap outreach effort.

The advantages of the WikiWomen's History Month model:

  • Easy to organize, even at cafes, student clubs and small public libraries
  • Welcoming to everyone, especially new Wikipedians and Wikipedian-wannabes looking to contribute on women in history
  • Allows diverse local focuses on aspects of Women's History
  • Also, it's fun!

Find inspiration for articles to be expanded or creation on our to-do list (and add to it!): Wikipedia:WikiWomen's History Month/To-do list.

Resources for event organizers

Meetup event pages
  • Wikipedia:Meetup - Includes details on developing your event and how to create a meetup page.

Promoting your event
  • Wikipedia:Geonotice - A geonotice is a banner that pops up at the top of Wikipedia based on where you live (like the donation banners!). Request a geonotice for areas around your region and Wikipedians in those areas will learn about your event!
  • Finding users in your area to invite - Check out the event pages for past meetups in your area and invite those users on their talk pages.
  • Wikipedians by location - Invite users based on where they live - It's easy to do this by exploring who has what types of userboxes on their pages.
