Liberian election

I'd kind of expect that if you're going to post an item I rejected just an hour earlier, you'd at least acknowledge the existence of the comment and refute it while posting. But I guess that's too much to ask. -- tariqabjotu 21:50, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Bashir Ahmad (martial artist) wikipage

I understand that you have deleted or at least petitioned to put the page up for deletion due to the fact that it does not meet the wikipedia requirement of :

1:Subject of multiple independent articles/documentaries--articles should be from national or international media, not just local coverage. 2:Promotes a large number of events annually--the more fights it has sanctioned, the more notable. 3:Has actively been in business for several years - the longer the organization has been around, the more notable. 4:Large number of well-known and highly ranked fighters.

I had linked 3 articles mentioning him, all three of which are well known publications that include, Fighter's Only and Bloody Elbow

This guy is the pioneer of MMA in Pakistan, introduced the sport and runs the only MMA organization in the country, PAK MMA, and organizes events and seminars through out the country on a regular basis, the fact that there is almost no publication regarding MMA in south asia we donot have any media coverage, instead we use our own site to promote the sport in South Asia (www.pak-mma.com)

Has been in Martial Arts since 2006, actively competing in the Muay Thai circuit since 2008 and will make MMA debut in 2011 in One FC.

So 3/4 requirement are being fulfilled, then why the deletion? — Preceding unsigned comment added by BOOG33Y (talkcontribs) 18:53, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, as you saw, the deletion discussion took place here. I suggest you turn directly to the corresponding WikiProject, WP:MMA. If they agree the article meets notability criteria, I can easily restore it. Regards. --Tone 21:04, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I should point out that MMANOT was never the criteria that these pages needed to meet in the frist place, it was wrong for the other users to use this, as because of how strict the criteria is on there it allows no other fighters that competes at a second tier promotion downwards. I should then state that the real criteria your page should of met was WP:GNG, and basically it means if enough articles exists on him, even if they are just plenty of Google search results on the same person, he is notable, I hope this helps you BOOG33Y. If the page didn't have enough articles at the time, just ask for the page to be reinstated so that you can easily add them in where appropriate. BigzMMA (talk) 12:59, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The arguments by the OP were all advanced at the AfD - this one should probably go to DRV (if anywhere), rather than a casual reinstatement. Rich Farmbrough, 19:19, 9 December 2011 (UTC).[reply]
I agree, let's send it to DRV then. --Tone 20:22, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

ITN Photo

Jake Bostwick

Hello, I believe your the user who closed the debate that this page as well as the page above was part of. I write to request the same thing but for Jake Bostwick. Last night he won the Cage Rage UK Middleweight Championship, he has competed for Cage Rage 11 times and Cage Rage UK 6 times. Now according to how the criteria on the WP:MMANOT page is set for fighters, he pretty much passes the majority of it anyway, but the fact that he meets WP:GNG as well should be a double bonus towards having his page reinstated. Because Cage Rage UK events are tape delayed and shown on TV on the Wednesday after their shows, we can expect more on the results of the events coming from the Thursday morning after it is shown (local time). But there are plenty of sources that talks about Bostwick, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi. A reply to both at the same place as this is a common issue. I have no problem in bringing the articles back. However, please contact the guys at the martial arts project and tell them about that so that they are aware of the situation (and we avoid further AfDs). --Tone 19:05, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I will do that first thing in the morning, but what should I say, that they meet GNG and that we got your blessing to bring them back on? BigzMMA (talk) 21:06, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well I have just wrote on the WT:WikiProject Martial arts page, informing them that you are happy to reinstate both the pages, so now I'd like to know what does this mean? Do we have to wait until someone replies on that page or will you go ahead and undelete the pages? BigzMMA (talk) 15:12, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Let's wait someone responses. No need to hurry ;-) --Tone 10:33, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Haha alright, Well I put it on the martial arts project page like you said, and one user put the conversation onto the MMA project page, and no-one so far has commented on it. BigzMMA (talk) 13:06, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think he meant the talk page :) ... Rich Farmbrough, 19:09, 9 December 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Well its about a week now and no-one seems to have disagreed with the possible move, so I think we can bring them back up now :) BigzMMA (talk) 10:32, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone send me and BOOG33Y the link to the WP:DRV discussion, so that we can put in our side in for the pages, I can see that you have decided to take this action but the fact that you haven't sent either of us a direct link to the review means we cannot state the reason why they should be back. Thanks for reading BigzMMA (talk) 11:16, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I didn't put it, I thought you would. Seems more appropriate... --Tone 12:37, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well no-one really seems to states a case to say why they should not be put back up so I can only imagine we can avoid that if we can just by moving forward with it. Write a comment back to say what you think. BigzMMA (talk) 22:01, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Checkbox Compliant (Deleted)

You recently deleted the Checkbox Compliant article. It is currently a red link on Buzzword Compliant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buzzword_compliance).

If Checkbox Compliant doesn't merit its own article, perhaps the contents could be moved to the Buzzword Compliant page? I am a casual reader and was interested in reading about it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.97.81.122 (talk) 22:59, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The only meaningful content in the deleted article was "A product (typically a piece of software) that is checkbox compliant incorporates most (or all) of the fashionable features listed in reviews in computer magazines". Feel free to incorporate it into the parent article. --Tone 08:46, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Censorship

With regard to my "extremely unproductive" comments, I feel I have been subjected to censorship. Sca (talk) 01:09, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I felt the discussion has moved away from the original topic and as such was not fitted for Main page talk space. All the content was still there. I acted perfectly in good faith. --Tone 08:41, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No doubt. But the discussion was basically over, and I didn't see the need to 'hide' it. One almost suspects anxiety re some North Korean recation, though one hesitates to draw such a conclusion. Sca (talk) 11:49, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

His death's announcement still is most recent event listed. —David Levy 16:38, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

An editor made a point about Main Page practice, normal practice was explained, the OP questioned the value of the practice given its outcome in a particular instance, and questioned whether the strict application was necessary in this instance. In what way is that not suitable to Talk:Main Page? A comment that the discussion seemed to have run its course would have been sufficient: slamming the door on the discussion and hiding it from the view of other readers seemed unnecessarily heavy-handed. Grammar

Hey Tone. With nothing but respect...you're wrong. In sentences where the reporting verb is in the present tense, the sentence doesn't change to past tense (as it would if the reporting verb were in the past tense). e.g. "A suicide bomb kills 26 people" → Syria reported that a suicide bomb killed 26 people → Syria reports that a suicide bomb kills 26 people. I'll spare you an English lesson, but you can look this up anywhere; here are some examples for reference. Best regards, Swarm X 00:08, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You're mistaken. The present-tense event is the report. The deaths and injuries are separate events that occurred previously (and then were reported).
As a more obvious example, consider the dedication of a World War II memorial. One wouldn't say "So-and-so dedicates a memorial to soldiers who die in World War II." The deaths occurred long ago; it's the dedication that's being referenced in the present tense.
To quote one of the examples from a page to which you linked, "Ms. Fein says that she was angry." doesn't become "Ms. Fein says that she is angry.". The act of saying something, not the anger, is the present-tense event. —David Levy 04:52, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Another example: "Scientists report the discovery of a mammalian species that goes extinct two million years ago." Do you see the problem? —David Levy 05:06, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No. If a direct quote is "a bombing occurred", "bombing" is the subject. If you state that as an indirect quotation ("He said a suicide bombing occurred"), "bombing" is still the subject. The reporting verb ("said", or in this case, "reports") does not become the subject. "She was angry" → she says she was angry is not a parallel. "She is angry" → she says she is angry would be the correct parallel. Why? Because headlines are stated in the present tense—hence why ITN blurbs are always in the present tense. The event here is that a suicide bombing killed 26 people. Since we're dealing with a news headline, we state it as "...bombing kills 26 people..." Since this cannot be independently confirmed, we're simply stating it as an indirect quotation: "Syria reports that a suicide bombing kills 26". Stating it as an indirect quotation like this doesn't somehow require us to modify the tense—quite the opposite. As explained above, present tense reporting verb = no change in the sentence's tense. Swarm X 06:03, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm disappointed that you've reverted it yet again, David. Had you attempted to understand what I was saying, rather than assuming that there's no way in hell you could possibly be wrong, I'm quite sure you wouldn't have done so. Did you really think that I didn't double check my knowledge before launching an argument about grammar? Did you think I didn't dust off the reference guide sitting on my shelf, that I didn't look at multiple websites, didn't confirm my own knowledge multiple times before leaving that comment, to ensure that I wouldn't be arguing from a position of ignorance? I tried to explain, I tried to provide additional examples, but you've reverted based on an argument that simply isn't valid—one that, I have to assume, you apparently just made up. As a result, there's a grammatical error on the front page of one of the most popular websites in the world. Well done, truly. One banana sticker to you. I'm not going to edit war over it, but really, poor show. Swarm X 06:47, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know why you perceive disrespect on my part, but I can assure you that the feeling is mutual.
Upon reading your initial reply to me (minutes ago), I began to formulate a response. Then I read your followup and realized that I needn't bother writing it. I don't know what changed in 44 minutes, but I suggest that you remove the statement that "this user is fallible and encourages other admins to be bold in reverting their admin actions" from your talk page.
If you're under the impression that I ignored you, my apologies for sleeping. I waited about an extra hour, specifically to explain my reversion and watch for a potential reply (and I see from the timestamps that I just missed you). I messaged you (via a {{talkback}} pointer to this section), a courtesy that you'd extended to only one of the two editors you reverted (i.e. not to me).
And when I happened to awaken prematurely, I got on the computer specifically to check again. Needless to say, I was not pleased to find the above message, which is among the rudest I've received in my seven years at Wikipedia. I'm baffled as to how I provoked such anger and resentment, and I sincerely hope that you don't feel as depressed and disheartened as I do at the moment. —David Levy 08:24, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As I'm experiencing difficulty resuming my sleep, I might as well address your initial reply.
"She was angry" → she says she was angry is not a parallel. "She is angry" → she says she is angry would be the correct parallel.
Exactly. We don't transform a past-tense statement into a present-tense one when referring to said statement in the present tense. I'll quote your cited source directly:

One of the difficulties with indirect quotations involves the verb tense. The tense of the verb in the indirect quotation depends on the tense of the original statement.
When the original statement is in the present tense (as in our example), then the tense of the verb in the indirect quotation should match the tense of the main verb:

Ms. Fein says, "I am angry."
Ms. Fein says that she is angry.

Ms. Fein said, "I am angry."
Ms. Fein said that she was angry.

When the verb in the original statement is in the past tense, it must be taken a step back in our tense "time line" (see Chapter 5) when quoted indirectly.

Ms. Fein says, "I was angry."
Ms. Fein says that she was angry.

Ms. Fein said, "I was angry."
Ms. Fein said that she had been angry.

In the ITN case, the original statement is "A suicide bombing in Damascus killed 26 people and wounded more than 60." (or something to that effect).

Syrian officials report, "a suicide bombing in Damascus killed 26 people and wounded more than 60."*
Syrian officials report that a suicide bombing in Damascus killed 26 people and wounded more than 60.

*illustrative; not an actual direct quotation

ITN is written in the present tense, but this doesn't permeate the timeline (a present-tense report of a past-tense event). "Syrian officials report that a suicide bombing in Damascus kills 26 people and wounds more than 60." conveys that the Syrian officials are describing an ongoing event. ("Health officials report that smoking kills many people." is an example of when such grammar applies.) —David Levy 10:49, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, please see this. —David Levy 11:33, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Or indeed you can avoid this mess and go with my edit:
A suicide bombing in Damascus kills 26 people and wounds more than 60, according to Syrian officials.
Cheers, — Joseph Fox 13:18, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, that sidesteps the dispute quite elegantly. (Thanks for coming up with a solution.) But because items along these lines arise from time to time (and might not always lend themselves to such recasting), the underlying issue should be resolved. —David Levy 13:25, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Let me say for the record that I also agree that Swarm is incorrect here. And the rewording strikes me as an unnecessary decline in the quality of the blurb. It's not that we all can't agree; it's that Swarm can't. He never should have made a change twice like that, without even a second concurring opinion. Like with the UK/United Kingdom issue, one editor's ignorance (or in that other case, feigned ignorance) should not be yielded to. -- tariqabjotu 15:41, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, David. I think Swarm has a point but the issues is incredibly pedantic. And Tariq, the decline is certainly necessary if it will prevent this misunderstanding - I am of the opinion that it was more than Swarm who was confused by what is a strange, if accurate, wording. — Joseph Fox 04:29, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of the UnSun page

The reasons for deleting the UnSun page were mostly claims that the band is non notable.

I disagree. The lead guitarist is famous, both with a strong cult following as well as international mainstream fame. Originating from Europe, and having little success in the US, does not make them non notable.

The band is signed to a major label, is distributed by universal records, has released commercial music videos, and tours with some of the most famous bands across several genres. They toured with Papa Roach and Tristania (seperately). They played with KMFDM, Opeth, Epica, and My Dying Bride. I can walk in to any music shop in Canada and buy one of their CDs.

While their North American popularity is limited, on the world stage they are certainly notable.

SivviStyle (talk) 16:16, 13 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You may be correct, but can you provide some non-trivial third party sources about the band? If so, the best idea is to present them at deletion review where the AfD outcome can be overturned. I hope this helps, best, --Tone 18:34, 13 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Crowd-sourcing

Hello hi,

As a Wikipaedian administrator, you've had some first-hand experience with how powerful a tool crowd-sourcing the solution to a problem can be. I am starting a blog for my social media course on the topic of crowd-sourcing, so I'd love to do a short interview with you on the subject. I am still new to this field; it would be nice to get an inside view from someone with more knowledge than myself.

MSU Interview

Dear Tone,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and

Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's

Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we

teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community,

and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what

you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community

[[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_82#Learn_to_be_a_Wikipedia_Administrator_-

_New_class_at_MSU|HERE]], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my

students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training,

motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one

of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of

communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)

  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will

never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.

  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an

interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.

  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics

review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have

been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak

with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I

will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your

name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be

more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Tone,

I do not fully understand how Wikipedia works and why some have high authority and others do not with regard to what is posted. I try to navigate through the site properly but seem to not be very adept and therefore I failed at defending the subject page. Please help me to understand why Value-Chain Group was deleted from Wikipedia? I saw the alert and I thought I had responded to it, but it still was killed. Question...

I was searching for information on Darren Craig who is partners with Jeff Nicholas. They started and operate a website hosting/creation business under the name "Uprising Creative" (http://www.theuprisingcreative.com/) I found Jeff Nicholas and a link to their business but when searching for Darren Craig I found that you deleted the page. Below is info on your deletion which, if I understand all of this, you deleted the page on the 2nd of December 2007 because you could not find a "Darren Craig". Is this correct? I found reference to Darren Craig through the Jason Mraz website. I am very new to editing for Wikipedia so I don't but I have joined just incase there is something I can contribute.

Hi, as I see, I deleted that article several years ago - it was a very short one and without any useful references. If you think you have enough material to rewrite the article from scratch, you're kindly welcome. --Tone 17:15, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ITN

Needs a "The" before "African Union". ;) —Best, Strange Passerby (talkcont) 13:10, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done, thanks for noticing. --Tone 13:22, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, think "has been" needs replacing with "is". Best, Strange Passerby (talkcont) 13:24, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see David fixed it already. Should be fine now. --Tone 13:25, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

sorry to bother you again but an issue has come up elsewhere in which i more that perfectly and civilly asked for an opinion with nothing untoward, yet the responder for some reason comes up with out-of-the-blue attacks not discussing content. This one boggles me completely. can you take a look and see if im wrong and what was wrong on my part (if thats the case)Lihaas (talk) 10:38, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Huh, can't really help much here... If there was a reference stating that Hindi name is also official name of the event, that would help. Otherwise it's just translating ad libitum. --Tone 14:58, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
the help was on his reaction which was adverse...i dont believe i did anythign to aggravate such a reaction. There also is no source ad the translation is not at all in line with either this title or the past precedence he cites. Which is OR then and cant be imposed per BRDLihaas (talk) 19:35, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

can you please undelete the LV/Allentown Phantoms hockey team article? The team is definitely coming the following season. Just a suggestion. Thanks for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carolinapanthers17 (talkcontribs) 23:30, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Maybe then better to wait until the next season, when the notability won't be a problem anymore? --Tone 08:05, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I was not aware you already created 2012 Aceh earthquake. --SupernovaExplosion Talk 09:20, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. I believe a more detailed name is better for the name of the article. --Tone 09:23, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In The News/Recurring Items

I am posting here to ask for editors to look at Wikipedia:In_the_news/Recurring_items and to comment at the talk page to discuss/vote on an amendment to the ITN/R list. I am posting this message on a number of editor's talk pages to encourage debate.

In connection to an ongoing debate on which items can appear on the front page under "In The News", "Recurring Items" are nominated events which require very little debate in the nomination process.

I propose the following amendment to the current ITN/R list. In addition I will put this on the talk page of as many editors as I can find who are contributors to ITN/C

At Wikipedia:In_the_news/Recurring_items, I propose the following amendment to section 3:

  • At line 5, delete "and", and add after "territories" the words "and the world's twenty smallest nations".

Section 3, Line 5 would then read:

  • Disputed states, dependent territories and the world's twenty smallest nations should be discussed at WP:ITN/C and judged on their own merits.

I look forward to the debate doktorb wordsdeeds 07:25, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ITN Taliban Attacks and East Timor Election

Can you please come post this and this now? —Bzweebl— talk 02:42, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ITNR for elections

As someone who regularly contributes to election articles: Due to recurrent discussions that lead nowhere, an open-ended discussion and proposals are invited Wikipedia talk:In the news/Recurring items/Elections for ITN on the main page as to what should be recurrent without ITNC discussionsLihaas (talk) 07:24, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request to reinstate "Joyce Kim" original deleted on February 9, 2008

Hi! I currently work with Joyce and would like to update her page and properly cite everything to make it legit. Please let me know if there's anything else I need to provide to get the page reinstated. Thanks!
